Phylogenetic implication of seed coat sculpturing in subtribe Agrimoniinae (Rosaceae)

Seed morphology in the subtribe Agrimoniinae (Rosaceae) was examined using scanning electron microscopy to identify distinct characters and evaluate their evolution in a phylogenetic framework for five genera in the subtribe: Agrimonia L., Aremonia Neck. ex Nestl., Hagenia J.F. Gmel., Leucosidea Eckl. & Zeyh., and Spenceria Trimen. All genera have one or two mature achenes in a fruiting hypanthium. In the seed coats, the cell shape, size, wall features, and sculpturing vary across genera. Of most significance is the presence of papillae structures in both Agrimonia and Aremonia. Through the mapping of papillae features onto phylogenetic trees, either one or two changes in seed coats are hypothesized. The phylogenetic tree inferred from four nuclear and six chloroplast regions of sequence data suggests that at least two steps of papillae sculpturing on seed coats are required. On the other hand, in the phylogenetic tree of a low-copy nuclear gene, one independent evolutionary step is postulated to explain the current character states. In the latter hypothesis, the seed coat sculpturing also supports a monophyletic relationship for cosmopolitan Agrimonia and European endemic Aremonia. The seed coat sculpturing provides valuable information for inferring phylogenetic relationships at the generic level in the subtribe Agrimoniinae.
Genetic variation in populations of the Korean endemic Eranthis byunsanensis (Ranunculaceae)

The genetic variation in populations of Eranthis byunsanensis, an endemic and rare species of Korea, was studied using starch gel electrophoresis. All five known populations were sampled for allozyme electrophoresis of nine enzymes coded by 10 loci. The overall genetic variation of E. byunsanensis population was shown to be considerably high within the populations (A = 2.4, P = 90.0,
= 0.311). A positive
value of E. byunsanensis indicated an overall deficiency of heterozygotes, and a low
value (0.131) showed little differentiation among populations. The high genetic variation, less genetic differentiation among populations, and a significant amount of heterozygote deficiency propose the hypothesis that they have an experience of recent isolation and fragmentation of their habitat. Thus, the rate of gene flow has been drastically reduced, and the rate of inbreeding in E. byunsanensis populations has increased. Current habitats in Mai-san and Naro-do are vulnerable due to their small population size and the levels of anthropogenic activity in the region constantly threatening survival of this species. Because of the high genetic variation and low levels of differentiation among populations in E. byunsanensis, it is not issue which populations have a priority for protection, but we may concern the plan to maintain population continuously and diminish the rate of inbreeding.
Embryology of Jeffersonia dubia Baker et S. Moore (Berberidaceae) and comparison with allied genera

Because the embryological features of Jeffersonia dubia are poorly understood, we conducted the first embryological study comparing it to other related genera of Berberidaceae. Important embryological features of J. dubia are as follows: the anther is tetrasporangiate, anther wall formation confirms basic type, glandular tapetum cells are two nucleate, the epidermis persistent, and the endothecium develops fibrous thickenings, anther dehiscence by two valves, meiosis in a microspore mother cell is accompanied by simultaneous cytokinesis, microspore tetrads are usually tetrahedral, pollen grains two cells at the time of anthesis. The ovule is bitegmic, anatropous and crassinucellate, archesporium single celled, development of the embryo sac Polygonum type, a mature embryo sac is ellipsoidal in shape. Endosperm formation is of Nuclear type and embryogeny Onagrad type. Seeds are arillate and seed coat exotestal type. Embryological comparisons showed that Jeffersonia resemble to Epimedium and Vancouveria rather than Berberis and Mahonia in some features, like as number of tapetal cells, cytokinesis in meiosis, and thickness of exotesta. It also resembles to Gymnospermium in mode of anther wall formation, number of tapetal cells, formation of nucellar cap, and nature of antipodal cells. Nevertheless, Jeffersonia and Gymnospermium differ from several other embryological features and molecular data too. Therefore, embryological evidences support that Jeffersonia is closely related with Epimedium and Vancouveria.
Genetic and morphological divergence of Euphorbia esula and E. maackii in Korea (Euphorbiaceae)

To understand morphological and genetic differentiation between Euphorbia esula and E. maackii we examined 12 morphological characters and 11 isozyme loci from 14 populations of two species. Species of E. esula complex (A = 1.63, P = 44.83,
= 0.198) in Korea maintain nearly as high as the genetic diversity reported in East Asian E. jolkinii and E. fauriei while lower than those of E. ebracteolata and E. pekinensis in Korea. Although the ranges of most morphological character variation of the two species overlap, E. esula and E. maackii were well recognized by the combination of the morphological traits, and the result of UPGMA phenogram supports the two distinct species inhibited in Korea. However, isozyme data do not support the recognition of E. esula and E. maackii. The discordance between morphological and allozyme data should be explained by the recent divergence or gene flow via introgressive hybridization between two species.
Distribution of Carex kamagariensis K. Okamoto in Korea

Carex kamagariensis K. Okamoto was found in throughout the nation. This species is distinguished from other related taxa in Carex sect. Mitratae by pistillate scales with a long arista and achenes constricted above in the middle. A new Korean name, 'Jom-mok-po-sa-cho', is based on its small size and floral character similarity to C. genkaiensis. In this study, a description, illustrations and habitat photos of the species are provided. The key of its related species is also provided.
First record of invasive species Alliaria petiolata (M. Bieb.) Cavara & Grande (Brassicaceae) in Korea

Alliaria petiolata (M. Bieb.) Cavara & Grande (Brassicaceae) is an invasive species which is native in Europe and SW Asia. This species is currently invading the understory of mature temperate forests of North America. In Korea, A. petiolata is found to invade and colonize areas at forest margins along roadsides (Samcheok- si, Gangwon-do). This initial investigation serves to inform of the importance of early detection and extermination of this particular weed in Korea.
Phylogenetic relationships of Korean campanulaceae based on chloroplast DNA sequences

Phylogenetic studies were conducted to evaluate the taxonomic relationships among 28 taxa, including 2 outgroups of Korean Campanulaceae, using atpB, atpB-rbcL, atpF-H, matK, rbcL, rpl16, rpoC1 and trnL-F regions sequences in chloroplast DNA. The combined analyses of eight chloroplast DNA regions suggest that Codonopsis and Platycodon basally branches within the phylogenetic tree; Wahlenbergia distinguished an independent clade; Campanula forms a clade; Peracarpa and Asyneuma clade is a sister to the Adenophora-Hanabusaya clade; Hanabusaya is placed within the section Remotiflorae of Adenophora; Adenophora form a clade. Our present results support the generic level, although discordance remained at the infrageneric groups such as section and series based on morphological characteristics in the genus Adenophora.
A taxonomic study of Hemerocallis (Liliaceae) in Korea

Taxonomic study of the genus Hemerocallis (Liliaceae) in Korea was conducted based on morphological data. H. middendorffii was distinguished from its related taxon H. dumortieri by the trait of coriaceous long bract with green color. H. taeanensis was distinguished from its related taxon H. minor by its odorless flowers, longer perianth tube and leaf length. H. thunbergii was distinguished from its related taxon H. lilioasphodelus by its long perianth tube. Lastly, H. hakuunensis was distinct from its related taxon H. hongdoensis as a result of its extreme branching of scape and short leaf width. From this study, it was revealed that H. minor, H. lilioasphodelus, and H. dumortieri were distributed only in the northern part of the Korean peninsular.
A cytotaxonomic study of Vicia L. (Fabaceae) in Korea

Somatic chromosome numbers for 10 taxa and karyotypes analysis for 6 taxa of Korean Vicia were investigated. Somatic chromosome numbers of treated taxa were 2n = 12, 14 or 24 and therefore they proved to be diploid or tetraploid with basic chromosome numbers of x = 6 or 7. The chromosome number of V. hirticalycina (2n = 2x = 12) was reported for the first time in this study. The chromosome numbers of nine taxa were the same as in previous studies; V. angustifolia (2n = 2x = 12), V. cracca (2n = 4x = 24), V. hirsuta (2n = 2x = 14), V. tetrasperma (2n = 2x = 14 + 2B), V. amurensis (2n = 2x = 12), V. chosenensis (2n = 2x = 12, 12 + 2B), V. unijuga (2n = 4x = 24), V. unijuga f. minor (2n = 4x = 24), V. venosa var. cuspidata (2n = 4x = 24). The karyotypes of V. cracca, V. amurensis, V. hirticalycina, V. unijuga, V. unijuga f. minor, V. venosa var. cuspidata were observed as 2 m + 8 sm + 2 st, 2 m + 2 sm + 2 st, 3 m + 1 sm + 2 st, 4 m + 6 sm + 2 st, 4 m + 6 sm + 2 st, 4 m + 8 sm, respectively.
A taxonomic review of Adonis pseudoamurensis W. T. Wang (Ranunculaceae)

Morphological characters of Adonis pseudoamurensis W. T. Wang and its related species were examined to illustrate its taxonomic entity, and their new key was made. As a result, it shows that A. ramosa Franch., an endemic species in Japan, was sparsely pubescent on the abaxial surface of the leaf and petiole, and its sepal was as long as its petal. However, A. pseudoamurensis is glabrous on the same surfaces and its sepal was shorter than its petal. In addition, A. multiflora Nishikawa et Ko. Ito was clearly distinguished in that it had acuminate leaf apices, linear shape of the final lobes of leaf and scales on the branched stem. Meanwhile, A. pseudoamurensis featured petiolate at cauline leaves and pubescent on pistils, and these characters were common with their allied groups. But diagnostic key characters suggested by the original description such as sessile at cauline leaves and glabrous on pistils were not observed in this study.
Taxonomic identity of Artemisia integrifolia L. in Korea

The taxonomic identity and distribution of Artemisia integrifolia L. were reviewed based on the specimens collected from Bukchangpyeong, Onseong-gun, Hamgyeongbuk-do (in KYO), Hamrimsan, Gyeongheung-gun, Hamgyeongbuk-do (in KYO) and Hoeyang-gun Gangwon-do (in SKK). A. integrifolia is distinguishable from A. viridissima and A. subulata by middle cauline characteristics such as cauline leaves ellipticlanceolate, 1-3 pairs with coarsely serrated margins. The illustration, description and key to similar species are provided.
Juncus fauriei Lév. & Vaniot (Juncaceae): a new record in Korea

Distribution of Juncus fauriei L
v. & Vaniot were restricted in Japan and Russia in previous literatures. We found its new distribution in the Korean peninsula: wet meadows of sandy seashore in Ha-Jo-Dae, Kangwon province. The plants have flattened stems (usually coiled) and black-colored margin in tepals. These are key characters to distinguish J. fauriei from J. decipiens, J. setchuensis, J. haenkei, and J. brachyspathus, which are closely related Korean taxa in the section Juncotypus. We provide description, distribution, and detailed photos of J. fauriei, and key for Korean taxa of sect. Juncotypus. The plant is named as "Geom-Jeong-Nap-Jak-Gol-Pul" in Korean.
A new record of Carex (Cyperaceae) to Korean flora: Carex benkei T. Shimizu

An unrecorded species, Carex benkei T. Shimizu, was found in Is. Jaewondo, Jaewon-ri, Imja-myeon, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do and Dongbaik-dongsan, Seonheul-ri, Jocheon-eup, Jeju-si, Is. Jeju-do, South Korea. C. benkei is closely related to C. transversa Boott and C. brownii Tuck., and C. benkei is distingushied from the pistillate scales length, excluding the awn, similar to the achene and the beak of the achene with an annular appendage. A new Korean name, 'Gin-Hwa-Sal-Sa-Cho', was given based on its long pistillate scales excluding the awn compared with Carex transversa Boott. We provide here its redescription, illustrations, photographs, and a key to species of the sect. Confertiflorae Franch. ex Ohwi.
T. Mori's collections and resolving place names in Korea

Records found on labels of specimens deposited at University of Tokyo herbarium (TI) and references about Japanese naturalist, Tamezo Mori (1884-1964) were assembled to produce collector's itineraries from 1909 to 1916 in Korea. Mori collected large numbers of botanical specimens from different parts of the country. In August 1911 and 1912, Mori conducted botanical collections in Jeju and southern parts of Korean Peninsula. In 1913 major collections in North Korea by Mori took place in Mt. Baekdusan, Hamkyongnam-do. Following this exploration, in August 1916 Mori conducted another major collections in Pyeongannam-do and Hamgyeongnam-do. It is estimated that approximately 966 Korean specimens collected by Mori are currently held within the collections of The University of Tokyo herbarium (TI). Significantly these holdings also contain 46 type specimens (11 holotypes, 23 syntypes and 12 paratypes).
