Application of the Annealing Method to the Three Dimensional Layout Design
Journal of the Korea Society for Simulation, volume 10, issue 2, 2001, Pages 1~14
The layout design of component plays an important role in the design and usability of many engineering products. The Engineering artifacts of today are becoming increasingly complicated. The simulated annealing method has been applied effectively to the layout and packing problems of wafer. The main characteristics of simulated annealing method is that an optimum can be obtained from the many local optimums by controlling the temperature and introducing the statistic flickering. The objective of this study is to suggest a method to apply the simulated annealing method to the three dimensional layout design of submergible boat which has multiple constraint conditions and evaluation criteria. We describe an approach to define cost function, constraints and generate layouts using a computer. In this research three dimensional LAYout Design Optimization Program(LAYDOP ver.2) has been developed. The layout result(the total value of evaluation criteria) designed by a human layout expert has been improved by 31.0% using this program.
A Study of the delay pattern of voice traffic for end-to-end users on the voice IP
Journal of the Korea Society for Simulation, volume 10, issue 2, 2001, Pages 15~24
In this paper we study the delay patterns of voice traffic for end-to-end users Caused by serving the whole bunch of applications traffic at the same time on the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) network. Given the current situation that voice traffic is served along with other application services on the VoIP network, it is quite necessary to figure out how and by what the voice traffic requiring high QoS is delayed. We compare the delay performance of voice traffic on the VoIP network under FIFO with the one under Weighted Fair Queuing(WFQ), and discover the differences of the delay performance resulting from the use of different voice codec algorithms. The results of our study show that using the voice codec algorithm with a higher coding rate nd the queuing algorithm of WEQ can provide users with high-quality voice traffic.
An Empirical Test for the Combination of Multiple Recursive Generators
Journal of the Korea Society for Simulation, volume 10, issue 2, 2001, Pages 25~32
The Multiple Recursive Generator(MRG) has been considered by many scholars as a very good random number generator. For the long period md excellent statistical properties, the method of the combination with random number generators is used. In this paper, we thought the two-combined MRGs. Using the frequency and serial test, and runs test, we studied the importance of the initial seeds likewise other random number generators.
Simulation of Container Leading/Unloading Operation Using Simulation Based Design Methodology
Journal of the Korea Society for Simulation, volume 10, issue 2, 2001, Pages 33~46
Recently, the usage of containers in marine transportation is rapidly increasing. The problem of ship stability is important because of its direct influence to the loss of the human-life, ship, and merchandise. However, the assessment for ship stability during container loading/unloading in port is dependent on human experience only. On the other hand, the emerging information and communication technologies of shipbuilding industrial environments are rapidly changing. To respond to the situation, a new paradigm has been matured with new concepts such as the concrete method. Especially, all the efforts are shown to be concentrated to realize the concept of Simulation Based Design(SBD) based on three dimensional Computer Aided Design(CAD) model. In this paper, ship model-based simulation methodology for design and operation of ship is suggested, and for the verification of suggested methodology, the system for stability assessment of ship during container loading/unloading was developed using ENVISION, a general-purpose simulation system. The developed system consists of geometric modeling subsystem, basic calculation subsystem, and Computer Aided Engineering(CAE) subsystem. In addition, interface to CAE/CAD /simulation system such as SIKOB and ENVISION is provided.
Reduction of Location Update Traffic Using Virtual Layer in PCS
Journal of the Korea Society for Simulation, volume 10, issue 2, 2001, Pages 47~60
In mobile wireless network efficient location management for tracking and finding mobile users is a critical issue. The traffic for location update can be excessive, especially at the base stations that are near to the location area (LA) boundaries. In this paper we propose a new location update scheme which can significantly reduce the signaling traffic for location update. It is based on the virtual layer approach employing SubMSCs. The virtual layer is laid upon the original layer of LAs such that the mobile terminals moving around the boundary cells of adjacent LAs become to move within a virtual LA. As a result, the location update traffic is substantially reduced compared to overlapping scheme which is the most recent and efficient location update scheme.
An Application of Variance Reduction Technique for Stochastic Network Reliability Evaluation
Journal of the Korea Society for Simulation, volume 10, issue 2, 2001, Pages 61~74
The reliability evaluation of the large scale network becomes very complicate according to the growing size of network. Moreover if the reliability is not constant but follows probability distribution function, it is almost impossible to compute them in theory. This paper studies the network evaluation methods in order to overcome such difficulties. For this an efficient path set algorithm which seeks the path set connecting the start and terminal nodes efficiently is developed. Also, various variance reduction techniques are applied to compute the system reliability to enhance the simulation performance. As a numerical example, a large scale network is given. The comparisons of the path set algorithm and the variance reduction techniques are discussed.
Combined Discrete-Continuous Modeling Methodology for Supply Chain Simulation
Journal of the Korea Society for Simulation, volume 10, issue 2, 2001, Pages 75~89
Many simulation models have been built to facilitate simulation technique in designing, evaluating, and optimizing supply chains. Simulation is preferred to deal with stochastic natures existing in the supply chain. Moreover simulation has a capability to find local optimum value within each component through entire supply chain. Most of supply chain simulation models have been developed on the basis of discrete-event simulation. Since supply chain systems are neither completely discrete nor continuous, the need of constructing a model with aspects of both discrete-event and continuous simulation is provoked, resulting in a combined discrete-continuous simulation. In this paper, an architecture of combined modeling for supply chain simulation is proposed, which includes the equation of continuous portion in supply chain and how these equations are used in the supply chain simulation models. A simple example of supply chain model dealing with the strategic level of supply chain presented in this paper shows the possibility and the prospect of this approach.
