A Study of Life Cycle Assessment in Shipyards Layout using a Discrete Event Simulation Engine

In recent days, global shipbuilding companies have been showing great interest in eco-friendly ship products and trying to reduce environmental pollution - harmful gas and dust in shipbuilding process. Following this trend, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was carried out to an application of shipyards layout. LCA is a technique used to assess environmental impacts during the life cycle of products and systems. Until now, LCA has been used through ISO 14040 in somewhat limited industries, such as Building Life Cycle Assessment. Thus, this study analyzes the shipyard layout planning framework and builds life cycle inventory along with the simulation model structure to evaluate environmental impacts.
Modeling and Simulation of Ontology-based Path Finding in War-game Simulation

War-game simulation models the situation of a battlefield and has been used for evaluating fighting power and analyzing the occupation of a troop. However, in war-game simulation environment, it is very complex to consider all factors which can be influenced in real battlefields. To solve the problem of the consideration, we propose an ontology-based path finding model. This model uses an ontology to conceptualize the situation data of a battlefield and represents the relations among the concepts. In addition, we extract new knowledge from the war-game ontology by defining some inference rules and share knowledge by the established rules. For the performance evaluation of the proposed model, we made a limitation on the simulation environment and measure the moving time of a troop, the fighting capability of a troop, and the necessary cost while a troop is moving. Experimental results show that this model provides many advantages in aspects of the moving time, a loss of fighting capability, and the necessary cost.
The Relationship between FDI and Economic Growth: Kazakhstan Case

In this paper, we study the relationship between FDI(Foreign Direct Investment) and economic growth in Kazakhstan. For this research, we, first, investigate the factors that affect FDI infow to Kazakhstan since its independence and determine the degree of their influence. Second, we study the impact of FDI per capita on GDP per capita. To achieve these goals, an empirical study is conducted with 18 years data from 1992 to 2009 from World Bank Database. Data are analyzed using multiple linear regression, time series analysis and Granger causality test. The results show that the determinant of FDI is GDP and economic freedom index in Kazakhstan. Economic growth is affected by FDI, too. Specially, FDI is positively related to GDP and economic freedom index. FDI per capita's impact on GDP per capita is 30.4 dollars increase in GDP per capita by one dollar increase in FDI per capital inflow. The results provides useful information for policy makers to improve obtaining large amount of investments and facilitate economic growth.
A Methodology for Creating a Simulation Model for a Agent Based and Object-oriented Logistics Support System

Proposed in the paper is an agent based and object-oriented methodology to create a virtual logistics support system model. The proposed virtual logistics support system model consists of three types of objects: the logistics force agent model(static model), the military supplies transport manager model(function model), the military supplies state manager model(dynamic model). A logistic force agent model consists of two agent: main function agent and function agent. To improve the reusability and composability of a logistics force agent model, the function agent is designed to adapt to different logistics force agent configuration. A military supplies transport manager is agent that get information about supply route, make decisions based on decision variables, which are maintained by the military supplies state manager, and transport military supplies. A military supplies state manager is requested military supplies from logistics force agent, provide decision variables such as the capacity, order of priority. For the implementation of the proposed virtual logistics force agent model, this paper employs Discrete Event Systems Specification(DEVS) formalism.
A Study on the Analysis of Underwater Behaviors of Two Bodies Having Different Weight Characteristics

In this study, underwater behaviors of negative buoyant body and positive buoyant body, which are ejected from a platform, are compared through eject test and simulation. CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) method is used to calculate the hydrodynamic derivatives of negative buoyant body with varied hull. Hydrodynamic derivatives that cannot be calculated with CFD are used with the same values of base shape. The pitch angles of test data are much bigger than those of simulated data, and the reason is supposed to be the trailing air effect. A more accurate simulation is possible via modified force modeling which reflects this phenomenon. The underwater behaviors of positive buoyant body and negative buoyant body are somewhat different with each other at the same eject condition, but it may not be a problem in the view of operation.
Resource Allocation for Converged Mobile Multimedia Services

Advances in mobile communication and digital video technology enable to commercialize converged multimedia services such as VoD in the mobile networks. Media convergence is evolving into U-Cloud and mobile IP-TV services constituted by high-speed mobile multimedia networks and integrated personal devices. This paper proposes a resource allocation scheme to guarantee QoS of converged mobile multimedia services, and simultaneously maximize legacy services in heterogeneous wireless networks. Performances are analyzed by the simulation.
Object-oriented Simulation Modeling for Service Supply Chain

Recently it is important to understand service supply chain because the economy moves from manufacturing to services. However, most of existing supply chain research focuses exclusively on the manufacturing sector. To overcome this situation, it needs to investigate and analyze service supply chain. Simulation is one of the most frequently used techniques for analysis and design of complex system. Service supply chain is complex and large systems that require an accurate designing phase. Especially, it is important to examine closely the dynamically interactive behavior of the different service supply chain components in order to predict the performance of the servcie supply chain. In this paper, we develop a conceptual model of service supply chain. Then, we present a new procedure to develop simulation model for the developed conceptual model of service supply chain, based on the UML analysis and design tools and on the ARENA simulation language. The two main characteristics of the proposed procedure are the definition of a systematic procedure to design service supply chain and of a set of rules for the conceptual model translation in an ARENA simulation language. The goal is to improve the knowledge on service supply chain management and support the simulation model development efficiency on service supply chain.
Impact of Employing Mass Customization in Shipbuilding

One of the goals of mass customization is to permit changes in the product to meet specific customer requirements without substantially impacting the cost or delivery schedule. In large assembly manufacturing industries, such as shipbuilding and commercial airplane production, customization takes place by changing components and/or modules, sometimes called interim products. Using shipbuilding as a case study, it is possible to study the impact of such changes using mass customization principles on the schedule. In large assembly manufacturing, mass customization changes would cause changes in engineering time and production time, based on the amount of change required by the customization. This work first proposes a structure for implementing mass customization in shipbuilding and then uses simulation of a simplified, theoretical shipbuilding process to evaluate the impacts of various levels of change on delivery performance.
The LVC Linkage for the Interoperability of the Battle Lab

In the M&S filed, The Battle Lab is available for acquisition, design, development tool, validation test, and training in the weapon system of development process. Recently, the Battle Lab in the military of Korea is still in an early stage, in spite of importance of battle lab construction. In the environment of network centric warfare, a practical use of the M&S which is connecting live, virtual and constructive model can be applied to all field of System Engineering process. It is necessary thar the Battle Lab is not restricted by time and space, and is possible for the technical implementation. In this paper, to guarantee the interoperability of live and virtual simulation, virtual simulators connect live simulators by using the tactical data link. To guarantee the interoperability of virtual and constructive simulation, both virtual simulators and constructive simulators use the RTI which is the standard tool of M&S. We propose the System that constructed the Air Defence Battle Lab. In case of the approach of target tracks, The Air Defence Battle Lab is the system for the engagement based on a command of an upper system in the engagement weapon system. Constructive simulators which are target track, missile, radar, and launcher simulator connect virtual simulators which are MCRC, battalion, and fire control center simulators using the RPR-FOM 1.0 that is a kind of RTI FOM. The interoperability of virtual simulators and live simulators can be guaranteed by the connection of the tactical data links which are Link-11B and ATDL-1.
Enhancing the Efficiency and Reliability for M&S based Test and Evaluation System Development

Recent modeling and simulation technologies are being used in various fields, especially in the field of military simulation-based acquisition (Simulation Based Acquisition) is recognized as an essential policy. In test and evaluation phase of the SBA process, to build a simulation-based T&E(test and evaluation) environment is needed when T&E cannot be carried by real weapon system. To improve efficiency and reliability for T&E, interoperability, reusability and reliability for T&E equipments and systems are important. In this study, we propose applying simulation framework for efficienct test and applying VV&A process for reliable evaluation. We describes the characteristics of the development process, the actual test cases and the results of evaluation. Finally utilization plan and the future direction of research is described.
