Park, Jin-Kyoung ; Oh, Chan-Ohk ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 20, issue 1, 2011, Pages 3~13
The Korean society is recently becoming the aging society at an unprecedentedly rapid speed. Following the increase of the older population, their needs for special care is also rocketing. However, due to the increase of working women, nuclear-families, and old persons living alone, new facilities for the elderly such as nursing home are urgently needed. Thus, many nursing homes for the elderly are also rapidly providing. It is needed to examine if such nursing homes are properly designed for the dependent elderly to live. This study was carried out by the field observation using a checking sheet with measuring and taking photograph. The subjects were 12 nursing homes which gave positive responses for walking through their facilities. The items for observing and measuring were made based on the regulation on improving the facilities for the disabled, the elderly, and the pregnant. Whether each item fits the regulation or not was examined. The 9 areas in each nursing home were examined : entrance, hallway and corridor, stair, elevator, ramp, bed room, shower and locker room, bathroom, and rest room. It was founded that many accessible-related items were met. However, many supportive-related items such as ones for the visual disabled, and many supportive-related and accessible-related ones for bathroom, shower room, and restroom were unmet. In the process of this research, it was founded that the tool for evaluating the design of nursing home in terms of universal design should be developed.
A Study on Metamorphic analysis and the expressive system in Contempory Architecture
Byun, Dae-Joong ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 20, issue 1, 2011, Pages 14~23
The purpose of this study is to analyse the inclinations and expressions in contemporary architecture. Specially, we call this tendency and architectural movements as architectural metamorphosis. Metamorphosis in architecture present the core of the change of Forms and spirits in a change of outward shape and terrestrial identity. As in Ovid's extended dramatic poem of change and transformation, Metamorphoses, all Souls are deathless, and migrates from one form to another. Like these stories in Metamorphoses, Ovid tells the soul never dies, but leaps one form to anther, and can take any shape. So the architectural form, transformation and deformation in contemporary architecture means architectural sensations and cognitions can even approach the soul of form and shape under the transformation. The expressions and design strategies of metamorphosis in comtemporary architecture reveal continuous and sequential formations of space, linear structure with force and vector, rhythmical wavement and folding surface, lively wiggly flows of volumns and objects, and so on. Such qualities came from the periodical needs; separation of structure and surface, poly-surfacial movement, poly-sensual expression and experience, dematerialization and the dematerialized space, formless of non-formal architecture, digital architecture. Architecture of Metamorphosis is the ways and the needs of our period to overcome the static limits prohibits the liberal thoughts, to find the ways toward the opportunities and diversities and to unlock the imaginaire of the contemporary architecture.
A Study on the Criteria and Characteristics of New Material for Housing Space Focused on Sustainability
Jung, Sun-Hee ; Seo, Ji-Eun ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 20, issue 1, 2011, Pages 24~32
The study was to grasp features of new material applicable to housing space in the sustainable side by analyzing materialistic features of new material and features of sustainable material with sustainable new material. Through analysis on sustainable new material, the study deducted the below conclusion. First, through the precedent studies, the characteristics of sustainable materials have been classified into eight categories : friendly healthiness, non-toxicity, comfortableness, naturality, recycling, harmlessness of environment, separate collection, reusability. After the criteria have been brought up from new material applicable to housing space in the sustainable. Second, in materialistic Characteristics of new material, 'New Process' was mainly applied. There was no any new material applied to 'new raw material'. Therefore, it is thought that it is necessary to study on development of perfectly new material and to study on new material to apply material used in other fields to finishing material of dwelling space. Third, in Characteristics of sustainable material, 'Re-serviceability' appeared most and 'Non-toxicity' and 'Recycling' appeared in the next. 'Friendly Healthiness' and 'Separate collection' appeared only one on the other side. Therefore, it is judged that it is necessary to develop and study new material including health components considering user's health, function for health increase and function to grope comfort for humans. Finally, after researching and analysis the criteria by recently presented the new material, it has been concluded that the standard can be used as the criteria of new material for the possibility of application in housing space. On the basis of the study, the author will carry out analysis on sustainable new material minutely and utilize it as basic data to suggest a standard of sustainable new material applicable to dwelling space in the future.
A Study on the Evolutionary Aspects of Place Image Strategies through the Marketing Paradigm
Lee, Young-Soo ; Park, Kyoung-Ah ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 20, issue 1, 2011, Pages 33~42
This study, by applying the experiential and psychological thought category of "impression" as the space design strategy for drawing out "sensitivity," aims to break down the psychological mechanism forming the image held by the subject, and based on such segmentation, seek and strategize an effective design methodology. The subject's memory, pure sensation, and movement sensation are set as the preceding determinants comprising the psychological mechanism of space impression. The control determinants for achieving activation of psychological effect are reinterpreted as the relations of memory-cognition, sensation-perception, and movement-sensation and categorized into a cognitive strategy based on association, metaphor and remembrance; a direct sensation strategy based on formation, superposition and transposition of sensation; and a sensation strategy of process-formation based on expectation organization and reversal, contraction and relaxation. Each strategy is achieved through the formal, material and structural control of architecture. As a restructuring of the design methodology that has been experientially applied, the strategy categorization is important in that, by presenting the usefulness and effect by strategy according to space experience, it makes concrete the basic data that are useful for designing experience of sensitivity.

A Study on the Architectural Characteristics of Mount Angel Abbey Library
Chung, Tae-Yong ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 20, issue 1, 2011, Pages 71~79
Mount Angel Abbey library shows not only the general characteristics which Aalto had shown in his 60s but also special features of his last library project. Special features of Mount Angel library are the result of considering geography and existing context of the site. General characteristics of the library mainly come from the Aalto's concept for library especially considering light. Due to steep site, Mount Angel Abbey library has multi-layered and dynamic spatial configuration. Aalto considered the importance of daylight in the library and applied various kinds of openings to induce natural light. Therefore, Mount Angel Abbey library is the final result of his library type that developed from the Viipuri library of 1930s and his architectural thoughts of 1960s. As a combination of space and light, Mount Angel Abbey library is the outcome of Aalto's unique functional thoughts which maximize the function of the library through efficient induction of natural light.
A Study on the Expressional Characteristics of Eating & Drinking Space by Analysis of Takashi Sugimoto's Design Characteristic and Design Method
Kim, Jun-Young ; Park, Chan-Il ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 20, issue 1, 2011, Pages 80~88
Designs of Takashi Sugimoto suggested new concepts on the space after broking out fixed ideas, and attempted spatial expressions differently from existing interior decorations through independent thoughts and new interpretations. It is showing orientalism's influences strongly based on Japanese traditional beauty unlike western country's design trends. Takashi Sugimoto is implementing unique own design viewpoints by using materials in nature rather than artificial ones, and stressing extra ordinary view of the world having been edited with daily life through traditions and local cultures along with recycling old daily goods and wastes rather than pursuing modem and futuristic spatiality. Sugimoto thought that beautiful designs and uncommon ideas could be gotten from simple daily experiences, and thus materialized it with a technique of extraordinary daily life's implementation through such design viewpoints. Also, He pursues designs in which dense communications are made variously between spaces, space and user, and this becomes design techniques having been used mostly in his projects. It creates soft boundaries through using certain objet as an intermediate of doing communication or erasing physical boundaries, and then induces close communication within the space. This design viewpoints and techniques of Takashi Sugimoto have directed own discriminated designs nowadays.

The purpose of this study is to analyze application methods and characteristics of fractal geometry and voronoi diagram which are most representative principals of generative design in nature by research on the example of furniture design using these principals. The results of having analyzed fumitures by generative design can be summarized as follows; design principals of fractal; superposition, scaling, repetition & gradation, deformation, distortion and voronoi diagram; individual speciation, variational patten, repetition gradation, ambiguous boundary create new design concept and emergent form in furniture design. Application methods are 'form emergence by algorithm', 'conventional process based on principals of generative design', and 'reproduction of pattern from generative design'. Biological reinterpretations and new explorations of principals of nature generation offer unbounded possibilities for furniture design.
A Study on the Design Transform of the Modern Architecture Renovation
Lee, Sung-Ho ; Oh, In-Wook ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 20, issue 1, 2011, Pages 98~108
As people abroad have been much interested in the usage of modern architecture from the early days, many researches about various methods of using them have been progressed. In Korea, with the need to protect the modern architecture through active usage of them in the dimension of protecting the disappearing history, at present, many modern architectures were renovated and used. This research is to find out the sense of direction about the changes of design of the renovated modern architectures in Korea by analyzing the design changes after the renovations in Korea and abroad. Under the limitation of the modern architecture renovation case in Korea, Japan and China, the changes of design after the modern architecture renovation in Korea and aborad were analyzed by the analysis of the ways of remodelling for each case according to the case analyzing frame. Based on the reasons of renovations which had purpose of preserving social history with many other various reasons in common in both cases of Korean modern architecture remodelling and abroad, the common direction of design is to meet new with old to preserve the special image though they did it in different ways. However, different from the case of Japan and China which are coexisting present and past in space, Korean case focused too much on outside, which resulted in only outside designs. In the case of Korea, the past should have mutual understanding to have the firm space image by forming unique interior space culture through the architectural grafting the present in the past not only in the outside space but also in the indoor space. In another words, for the various changes of design in Korean modern architecture renovations, a systematic research should be done about the interior spaces of present architecture and modern architecture.

Analysis on Attraction Power and Holding Power of Exhibition Areas at Science Museum - Focused on Analysis on Exhibition Method of Exhibition Spaces at Gwacheon National Science Museum -
Lim, Che-Zinn ; Choo, Sung-Won ; Park, Moo-Ho ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 20, issue 1, 2011, Pages 165~172
Visitors' behaviors within an exhibition space are a substantial means to grant spatial arrangement and validity of exhibits. Therefore, the study analyzed visitors' behaviors in the viewpoint of attraction power and holding power of exhibits on the basis of exhibition layout of real science museums. Through the analysis, the study grasped efficiency of analysis index and exhibition environment elements which might have an effect on planning the exhibition space of a large-scale museum and producing detailed ranges of exhibition. The main indicators used are: 1. Attraction power: it indicates the relative incidence of people who have stopped in front of an object/exhibit during the exhibition tour. It is calculated by dividing the number of people who stop by the total number of people who have visited the museum or gallery. 2. Holding power: it measures the average time spent in front of an information/communication element. It is calculated by dividing the average time of stay by the time "necessary" to read an element. As a result, It was expected that attraction power and holding power of exhibit would be increased when moving line of seeing was inductive. However, when the traffic movements of seeing was inductive, repetitive seeing of exhibit was almost never realized and visitors had a strong tendency which viewed on their way of moving without viewing on their way of stopping. On the other hand, it may mean that density of exhibit is low or size of exhibition space is small that most of exhibits within exhibition space have high attraction power and holding power. As Gwacheon National Science Museum, when a museum is composed of many large-scale exhibit halls, it should be formed by separating the main moving line of seeing from the optional moving line of seeing through visitors' natural choice of exhibit and proper inducement of moving line of seeing. In such structure, exhibition environment of the main moving line has an effect on attraction of exhibit and the use of optional moving line acts as a factor to increase attraction. In addition, it is thought that attribute of exhibit and proper arrangement of rest space within exhibition space will increase holding power of exhibit.

Application standard is directed, comparing with systems certifying green-schools in domestic and foreign policies. The following is the primary result of this study. First, on developing systems for certifying environmental-friendly buildings about remodeling schools, characteristics like ‘the phase of certifying essential lists and the diversity of certifying lists’, ‘developing departmentally into new-building, reconstruction, remodeling, existing-building in basic data’, ‘development of certifying existing-buildings as well as new-building’ in foreign systems should be developed appropriately for Korea. Next, not only reuse of the existing facilities but better assessment through diversification of classified contents in domestic system are carried out in comparing remodeling lists. Especially the primary list that is found out commonly limited lists certifying remodeling should be developed appropriately. Impossible lists getting certification should be applied to map out a concrete standard. Lastly, the range of certification should be diversified and developed sustainable like other systems for better assessment. Adding various lists suiting for Korea and departmentalizing score of phases and items in particular, for avoiding a needless collision between certification lists, absence of them. Above of all, basic direction about certifying environmental-friendly buildings about remodeling schools should be developed the only individual instrument, not for gaining it simply as a part of the environmental policy in Korea. This study has significance on vitalization of certifying environmental-friendly buildings, which performing primary environmental-friendly education facilities, based on its advance.

Jang, Woo-Seok ; Son, Kwang-Ho ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 20, issue 1, 2011, Pages 199~207
After the development of printing technology since the 15th century and the rise of citizen consciousness in the 18th century, the library has taken a public concept. And after the 20th century, its role as a public library for the public was stressed, and as its spatial composition became miniaturized and specialized, its function changed from stacking and reading to various kinds including culture and service and is getting more complex beside the function of a library. Thereupon, this study aims to figure out the limitations of public libraries' opening years shown in advanced researches and understand the current status of spatial composition by complexation with the subjects of five public libraries opened after the end of December, 2006 in order to examine their tendencies of complexation and the characteristics of spatial composition by the complexation of public libraries. As a result, the present public libraries have at leaser more than two spaces with complex functions. According to the result of analysis on the types, locational relations between spaces showed the mixed type the most. In the types of building allocation, the building integrated type had a higher percentage than the separated type. About the types of entrance, the one common door type was fewer than the two separate door type. In the analysis on the types of the interior line of flow, the common type was similar to the dispersed type, and it is thought to be resulted from spatial composition rather than the preplanned line of flow.
