School age is the period when forms the most of physical, spiritual and behavioral developmental characteristics. And those are kept for lifetime. Since each of developmental characteristics is created through the interaction with physical environment, the learning space which is children`s main playground should be designed as healing environment. Therefor, the purpose of this research is to find the healing environmental elements for learning space that help school children`s developmental characteristics. For that, we researched the physical, spiritual and behavioral developmental characteristics of school children. And we found the healing environmental characteristics for learning space along with each developmental characteristics, by the analysis of Herman Hertzberger`s elementary schools` classroom environment.

According to definition of rural area, the scopes of the research of rural houses limited the 12 places rural area(Gun area, excluded Ulleung-Gun) of Gyeongbuk province. The method of study is to compare and analyze about housing situation, structure of house, housing type and housing area etc. through the statistical data of each Gun area and other various data etc. during these 5 years. As a results of the analysis : 1) The supply ratio of housing is steadily decreasing in rural areas. 2) The houses of rural areas are changing from a detached house to multi-household house and small apartment by development near the rural area. 3) The number and area of commercial buildings are gradually increasing because of urbanization of rural areas. 4) The most houses inside area scopes in the rural area was from
area. And the family types of rural house are changing from large family to nuclear family and single households. 5) The structure of rural houses is changing from the brick house type to lightweight steel construction house because of cost-cutting of construction and easy way to construct etc.
A Study on the Expressivity of Covering and Exposing of Architecture Surface after Modern Architecture - Focused on the Tectonic Concept through Semper`s Theory "Dressing" -
Oh, Sang-Eun ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 3, 2014, Pages 29~38
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.3.029
This paper is to analysis covering and exposing elements through surface in the spirit of the time through the meaning of relationship between structure and symbol(ornament) in the theory of dressing of Gottfrid Semper. In other words, The purpose is to illuminate how complementary tectonic between structure and symbolic of an architecture surface is expressed in accordance with the biased required conditions relating with the paradigm of the era. The advancement of the new method of tectonic and the new aesthetic taste have a deep relation with the reconsidering the dichotomy classification discussing a dominant position between structure and symbol(ornament). Expression of surface representing the era comes across the combined interpretation of technology, structure, and the non-physical culture`s art of the community and the era.

Lee, In-Su ; Lee, Jung-Wook ; An, Eun-Hee ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 3, 2014, Pages 39~47
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.3.039
This study was initiated by the fact that modern architecture caused the loss of placeness by seeing place with wrong interpretation and method and provided people with a phenonenon of separation between the depth of experience and honesty. As a solution for such problems, this study intended to suggest a direction through an analysis on the works of Geoffrey Bawa who was recognized as `a genius of place` and the investigation on the place characteristics of his representative work `Lunuganga`. Its process was as follows; First, this study explored the characteristics of the place, Sri Lanka, which was the background of his architectures, to see its impact on his life and architecture. Second, based on his representative works of each period and the contents that he mentioned in literature, the general characteristics appearing in his architectures were identified. Third, through an analysis on the work, Lunuganga, the place characteristics appearing in his architectures were investigated. Through such process, it could be recognized that Geoffrey Bawa`s architectures reveal the place characteristics as nature, place characteristic as journey and stay, and place characteristic as sense. In this study, it could be verified that place was integrated and applied to Geoffrey Bawa`s architectures through the above characteristics and the spaceness was manifested. Through this, this study intended to suggest an orientation for the above problems.
Characteristics of Relational Representation of Light and Architectural Space Elements in Luis Barragan`s Houses
Kim, Ji-Eun ; Lee, Jung-Wook ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 3, 2014, Pages 48~55
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.3.048
Luis Barragan is a representative Mexican architect. He designed architectural space as a local architect in consideration of the Mexico`s harsh Mediterranean climate. His manifestation of the regionality can be found mainly in his precise expression of light. Such method and concept of using light in Barragan`s architecture made a huge impact on later architects but detailed studies on this issue have not been made actively. Hence, this paper intended to suggest a starting point or an orientation by illustrating the characteristics of using and expressing light in architecture through his cases of housing works. The study method was as follows. First, the general characteristics of light were identified by analyzing the elements of architectural space that dealt with light and the characteristics of expressing light shown in the architectural space. Second, the architectural background of Luis Barragan and the architectural space elements of the light expressed in his architectural space were extracted to form a hypothetical ground. Third, five of his works on the houses in his prime (after the year of 1945) were analyzed to explore the characteristics of relational representation between light and the architectural space elements in his architecture. Through this process, it was learned that, in his architectural works, light was the embodiment of the location-related, time-based, daily and illusionary experience into architecture. In addition, meditative light could be experienced by contrasting the soft and dispersed light and shadow of the inside space of Barragan`s houses with the strong external light. Therefore, through the process above, this study is hoped to provide an opportunity for the contemporary architects of our era to rethink the fundamental correlation between architecture and light.

Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 3, 2014, Pages 56~63
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.3.056
Furniture has been developed in pursuit of human convenience and comfort, but nowadays it does not consider human users and gradually loses the essence of furniture. Especially furniture design that disregards the relation with space loses both the meaning and purpose of furniture. In this regards, it is necessary to understand the essence of furniture design and establish a design direction for future progress. Based on the relation between furniture and space, this paper intended to study on John Pawson`s works that pursued the essence of design focusing on users, and propose a direction in a sense of real meaning for modern furniture design after exploring the characteristic of the furniture design of John Pawson. The study method of this paper was to investigate the design language of John Pawson and analyze his furniture in the morphological structural, functional, and material aspects. Based on such analysis, this study investigated the characteristics of the furniture design and found out what the core of the design that he pursued was. The scope of the study included the Independent Furniture that was restricted furniture collections of Driade and Spatial Furniture designed and installed at the stage of space construction. The study result showed that the design of John Pawson considered `the suitability to a specific place` as important factor and furniture was planned at the stage of planning space. Each independent furniture defines all spaces in the morphological, lay-out and functional aspects of furniture and emphasizes their own property. As Spatial Furniture shares the function of spatial composition element, Pawson`s furniture can be all called Spatial Furniture.

A Study on the Phenomenological Characteristics of Alvaro Siza`s Design
Kim, Jun-Sung ; Chung, Tae-Yong ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 3, 2014, Pages 75~82
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.3.075
The aim of this study is to review phenomenological characteristics in Alvaro Siza`s works through his design intention, methods and results. As a Portuguese architect, his personal and local background as well as pursuing the essence of architecture made phenomenological characteristics of his works. The emphasis of the placeness of site and the existence of architecture has close relationship with Heidegger`s concept of dwelling and the role of architecture. Although Siza has maintained white plat plane of interior space which is one of features of modern architecture, he provides dramatic and dynamic experiences of space using curved and acute angle of plane in his latter part of works. Another his phenomenological nature of buildings is a striking display of space and light which is remarkable especially in his museum designs. He made this character in adopting various shapes of double ceilings, openings and their combination with natural light which he always emphasizes. As a result, Alvaro Siza`s phenomenological characteristics comes not from clear architectural or philosophical theory but from continuous practice based on pursuing the essence of architecture.
A Study on the Symbolism of Architectural Design as an Applied Art

DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.3.083
As a applied art, Architecture is a synthetic art for dwelling and settlement. It has started with the origin of the human. and Artistical-technological indicator, include not only materiality but also immateriality such as history and society. After 20C, various categories of thinking is a undergoing rapid change. especially, beginning in 1900, The intrinsic value of "Fine Art" had lost their competitive power in the face of industrial revolution`s mass production. and it has been displaced by a "new concept", such as a conveyance of meaning or rational way of thinking. This change means free from the tradition and custom of a past. for that reasons, Due to the nature of applied art, it always include design symbolism and designer`s thinking is mainly processed in their own system of thinking. Symbolism for the art was distinguished from a general concept by the connotative meaning that called "the dual image". Therefore, at the start, this study will define about design and symbolism with a architecture as a applied art. then, Analysis the expression tendency of the contemporary architecture and modification. as a result, It aim to systematize mapping process and suggest the classification of various visual cue.
A Study on the Effect of the Lao Tzu`s Philosophy on Architectural Ideology of Mies van der Rohe
Lee, Ho-Jung ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 3, 2014, Pages 92~99
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.3.092
Quantum theory of Niels Bohr received the Nobel Prize in Physics was rooted to the Oriental thought `Yin-Yang and the Five Elements 陰陽五行`, and architect Frank Lloyd Wright is also known as Lao Tzu`s thoughts on the best architectural theory. Thus, the western architecture and oriental thought is very similar to the concept development. On the basis of this fact, the architectural philosophy of Mies van der Rohe is closely contact with Lao Tzu`s Taoism, that is `The greatest has no boundary 大象無形, Tao Te Ching chap.41` or `The way to be is not to be 有道者 不處, Tao Te Ching chap.24`. Hence the aim of this thesis is to investigate the interrelation between the German architect Mies van der Rohe`s `almost nothing` and the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu`s `Taoism`.

Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 3, 2014, Pages 100~107
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.3.100
Traditional architectural space, which is a historical cultural heritage must be connected mutually as a organic flow of various elements such as the environment of the time, political background and values, rather than approaching with fragmentary point of view. The Silhak Philosophy, the basis of late Chosun society developed equity thoughts on the basis of ideology of humanism, and it asserted the promotion of technology and industry as a measure to realize the pursuit of truth which is practically useful. Thus, we could verify the possibility of convergent interpretation of cultural technology of Hwaseong architectural space through the humanistic viewpoint of pioneer spirit of Silhak Philosophy which regards human as a main agent of desire of life, and the pursuit of truth which is useful for reality, and the realization of ethical value by aesthetic practicalism. Based on this, the ontological meaning and value of Suwon Hwaseong by the viewpoint of convergence of culture and technology have been drawn as the construction of planned new town by the practice of filial duty, the plan of city space based on rational values, the realization of a metropolis where self-sufficient economic activities are possible, the introduction of thorough construction management system, the introduction of advanced culture and its creative application, and the application of scientifical knowledges and cutting-edge technology.
A Study on the Features of Object-Focused Emotional Space in the Works of Nigel Coates
Lee, Hana ; Lee, Chan ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 3, 2014, Pages 108~116
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.3.108
Postmodernism, a cultural movement which occurred in the mid-20th century, avoided functional form, one of the features of modernism, and pursued post-rational and post-centric pluralistic thought which puts human emotions in importance. Postmodernism set a high value on emotional instincts of humans and focused on creation of empathy. It includes scepticism of rationalism and indicates the significance of emotional and psychological instincts of humans, or `emotions`. Along with the big change in that time, more dynamic and unprecedented indoor spaces had appeared. Nigel Coates, who had taken various kinds of artistic activity from the early 1980s to the late 1990s, had tried to make a new approach of objet-focused emotional spaces. Such an approach made in the time when science and technology had rapidly developed and social structure had changed was considerably fresh, liberal, and futuristic. He interpreted spaces by escaping from realistic intentions and communicating with drawings, and designed object-focused emotional spaces by actively employing objets on the basis of ideas. He tried to make emotional sharing between the public and spaces through objet, and showed unique spaces in his own way by reinterpreting the meanings of spaces and stimulating human emotion. This study was intended to look into his artworks to show his way of approaching objets, and to find an application plan and the future possibility of the plan.

Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 3, 2014, Pages 117~124
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.3.117
This study has inferred the mechanism of psychological observation activities through comparison analysis of the observation data acquired from eye-tracking and their post-estimation. The results of their analysis can be summarized as the followings. First, even though the frame of analysis has been set up so that there might not be any change to the number of the sections even with any change of consecutive observation times, the fact that the time by area decreases along with the change of consecutive observation from three times to six and nine times means that the time spent on "recognition" of space information reduces in the course that the feature of observing for space information switches from "perception to recognition". Second, the subjects moves their eyes incessantly in order to acquire space information while observing the space, when it was confirmed that there was a difference between "the space which the subjects searched for information by means of observation activities" and "that which they thought they observed that remaining in their consciousness". The appreciation of this kind of difference is very significant for the analysis of observation features. Third, the short observation (0.1 second, three times of consecutive observations) is consistent with "Ares I, intensively searched

DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.3.125
While shifting from modern society to post-industrial society, social structure is changing from the period which pursues material affluence to that which pursues psychological abundance. Formation of various values along with pursuit of psychological abundance has made the illusion of standardization, massification, and popularization meaningless. Different from functionality oriented approach in the past, today`s design requires diversified, multiple and integrated thinking and way in fast-changing social phenomena and stream, and lets human loose from the restriction of time and space thanks to technological development. It appears as new and various attempts along with paradigm shift of the wholle society, however the existing physical and actual things gradually transit to non-physical and non-actual things. Tendency of dematerialization has spread as far as esthetic and environmental genre on the basis of social and philosophical base along with change of consumption culture, and has displayed complex and de-genre aspect. Paradigm shift has expanded the range of communication by changing to user`s independent awareness and sensitive concept, among them, light displays various changes of space by taking the role of new medium. Particularly, the light as the media expression beyond the phenomenon of light of traditional concept acts as an essential element to stimulate sensitivity and for experience as an immaterial element which shows this change of space most dramatically. This research aimed at recognizing space in complex dimension, exploring the relation between the light and space through media expression displayed in the realization of immateriality, expanding the meaning of light, and recognizing it as the possibility of creative and future-oriented light space creation which responds to technological development and social change.

DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.3.134
The protection of Design is very important issues in these days. Even though Interior Design is also one of important design sections, it is relatively unprotected by formal intellectual property laws, yet creativity and innovation flourish. The needs for protection of Interior Design have been creased. The aim of this study is to suggest the weakness of the system for protection of Interior Design. The proposed research is comprised of two themes. One is to research Acts related to protection of Interior Design. The second is to study the registered cases under the Design Protection Acts. These two theme is generated by the comparative review between ROK and U.S.A. Through these comparative results, this study propose some considerations for an effective protection for Interior Design. Design need to be registered in the hole image of the space not a partial element. The concept needs to be protected because it is more effective way to respond the copying. Exterior for facade and Interior Design need to be registered in one registration to use the protection system actively.

DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.3.144
This study evaluated how folly is experimented in the contemporary architecture after 30 years when Bernard Tchumi first introduced it to the public by the modern transformation as a garden ornament. First, folly project has been carried out based on the general concept of energizing dwindling cities. However, it has changed to the direction of adding specific programs. Also, along urban regeneration that does not change deterioration of previous structures, Folly changed in the emphasis on readjust existing structure. Second, by having different designers presenting their own follies during the Osaka Expo, folly now has part on visual exhibition element. This has similarity with public art project, yet it could more actively intervene for urban regeneration compared to conventional environment sculpture. Third, folly is experimented as the event-installation art combined form of architecture and art where people could experience the space and enjoy art. Fourth, folly enabled the landscaping of architecture and expanding city planning. Recently Gwangju Folly invited various arts, social, and cultural professionals to converge city design with architecture, landscaping, and other diverse genres.

DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.3.164
The purpose of this study is to identify current condition of night lighting plan for the outdoor space in an apartment complex and to examine how residents perceive that environment. For this purpose, considerations and standards for safe and agreeable night lighting environment were examined through literature study. And a field study to determine the current state of the night lighting environment was conducted, and finally a survey was executed to find out residents` satisfaction, requirements and consciousness on that lighting environment of apartment complex. Findings of this study can be summarized as follows. Firstly, most standards for night lighting environment focus on the urban environment as a whole, so they have very few clear standards exclusive for the outdoor space of the apartment complex. Secondly, most of outdoor spaces surveyed in this study have met the basic illumination standard, but some spaces had parts where lights were off or out of order forming dark zones, and in some parts lights were screened by trees causing shades, poor safety and a narrowed sight. Thirdly, residents had interest in the night lighting environment of the outdoor space, but they were not fully satisfied with that environment. Fourthly, residents were negative about such factors of the environment as safety, convenience, recognition and aesthetics. These factors should be reflected in planning and improving the night lighting. It is expected that this study provides basic information necessary to plan safer and more agreeable night lighting, and to satisfy the residents` need for liveable apartment complex.

DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.3.173
Dwelling connotes characteristics like social and cultural and technical climatic conditions, lifestyles and demands of regions, and especially, apartment, as one of dwelling types, shows various aspects of modern society. With the economic development centering on large cities, apartments have been established as universal housing forms in Seoul and Shanghai. The deepening of economic development in cities has increased small households consisting of one or two persons by affecting the population and household structure, and they`ve become information consumer groups. This has also influenced the size of apartment and increased the demand for small-sized housing. If the floor area is small, it is possible to use space widely according to the plan composition, so there is a need for floor planning to understand natural environment, physical environment and residents.This study compared and analyzed plan compositions of small-sized apartments which have been parceled out for the recent three years in Seoul and Shanghai. This study aims to understand housing cultures and users in the two countries depending on natural environments, living habits and spatial functions by analyzing common points and differences of public spaces like living room, dining room and kitchen, and private spaces like bedroom which have absolute effects on room arrangement and traffic line. The study results are as follows. From the perspective of natural environments, in Seoul, two-sided open cross-ventilation structure where is favorable to lighting and ventilation, occupied the biggest proportion of public space, while in Shanghai, most public spaces had lighting and ventilation structures through windows in each room. In Seoul, 3R type occupied the largest proportion of private space(87.7%), and privacy was maintained and space scale was adjusted using spaces with diverse functions such as bathroom in the couple bedroom, dress room and powder room and variable walls. But 2R type occupied the largest proportion of private space(60.2%) in Shanghai, and they emphasized private space and privacy of each room depending on major living habits. In conclusion, this study for comparing and analyzing common points and differences of small-sized apartment plan compositions in Seoul and Shanghai will provide proper guidelines for small-sized apartments to be built in Seoul and Shanghai in the future, if strong points and weak points of plan compositions in the two countries will be additionally analyzed and remedied.

In conclusion, in overall space, the behavioral experiential elements are weak. The behavioral experiential elements are a marketing that induce the intuitive behavior added with expertise and considered difficult to be maintained. Although the consumers think that the biggest value of drugstores is `free and convenient product test` but in the other hand, they tend to think most positively about the consulting of experts. Therefore, the space emphasized with expertise should be more highlighted but such space should consider the convenience of consumers.

The development of digital culture has brought radical change in the fundamental concept of what workspace is defined by and has also switched the cognition of workspace originally being a place to spend time and do activities regarding tasks into space more than just that. If we take a look at the cases overseas firms have announced after the year 2000, we can find distinguishing facts different from the existing workspace composition, like creative workspace, amusement workspace, workspace for communities, etc. Thereupon, the goal of this research is to look into the domestic characteristics of workspace by investigating and analyzing case by case targeting domestic firms. This research is to first comprehend the theoretical study of workspace, the changing environment, and the characteristics of domestic workspace, going on to utilizing the information achieved above to analyze 8 appointed domestic firms as examples. Contemporary domestic workspace is defined not a place only for activities regarding work tasks but rather a place comfortable and friendly in the concept of a second residence, community node for sharing knowledge and information, mobile space for the digital nomads, and space for coincidental encountering and communication. Based on this the analyzed characteristics of contemporary domestic work places are metaphor, convergence, beyond boundary, and emergence. The characteristics mentioned above are considered elements that increase corporate profits by managing efficient smart-work and producing creative ideas. Therefore, I believe continuous research and development related to this subject is necessary.

This study aims to analyze and explore phenomenological elements that appear in small-scall art museums with spatial concepts, such as top and bottom, depth, movement, and experienced space on the basis of Merleau-Ponty
de la perception.` Therefore, small-scale art museums may be regarded as an ideal space that can be analyzed with Merleau-Ponty`s phenomenological theory since they should provide viewers with various spatial experiences in a limited space, breaking away from spatial limitations beyond appreciation of artworks. As research subjects, the range of art museums was limited to ones whose designs architectures or interior designers participated in out of all the small-scale art museums constructed after the 1990s, when the concepts and directing methods of spatial experience elements started being applied to art museums. Small-scale art museums chosen as cases were analyzed with Merleau-Ponty`s spatial concepts explained earlier, and this study drew conclusions for each one. The significance of this study is that the results of this study can be used as efficient materials to reflect phenomenological elements on planning future small-scale art museums through further studies on various small-scale art museums.

Modern museums introduce a so-called method of `exhibitions that approach` apart from the scheme of exhibitions in a simple listing type, creating a series of stories based on the original forms of remains put on display, adopting various methods of media access, and enabling the spectators of the museums to find exhibits a little more convincing and understand them more in depth, which might look somewhat isolated from their everyday lives. The configuration of the exhibitions that approach can easily be found in the mode of narrative development of exhibition topics and scenarios, and in this sense, a study on the narrativity of exhibitions is effective for analyzing the exhibition spaces of the museums. Furthermore, an analysis on exhibition spaces may be conducted through the process of forming the messages of exhibition contents and interpreting the narrative structures of the modes of development, and allows people to think that the methods of interpreting the spaces established like this may form an organic complementary relationship with exhibition contents and have a more extended meaning. Thus, this study examines the narrativity of Jeon-gok prehistory museum and the narrative structure systems based on the structuralist narrative theory, approaches the modes of narrative development of the spaces based on semiotic judgment, and aims to understand the structures of the space narrative. In addition, It is another object of the present invention in order to verify the objectivity, throughout the course of additional case studies, to improve the efficiency of future exhibition design.

Recently, many people can experience the virtual space by smartphone, and they use many games. In particular, this change has great implications in the collaborative and communicative planning paradigm, which is residents` participation and agreement becoming important in community making and urban design. This study analyze the case of the five virtual space games about community making and urban design, and examine the related regal system. Game users can construct roads, houses, buildings and facilities in the virtual city. Then, they create profit, and promote the growth of virtual city. In these games, construction elements are classified residential, commercial, industrial, parks, green spaces, public building, and roads. But these elements does not identified clearly, and they mixed. By analyzing of related regal system, these games focus on the individual buildings, spaces, and facilities rather than considering the terms of urban planning. To complement the virtual space game with the aspects of urban planning, these games can encourage the participation capability and enhance the communication skills of citizens.
