Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 6, 2014, Pages 3~13
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.6.003
The purpose of this study is to compare and analyse the difference between courtyard housings of hot-humid region and hot-dry region in India, in order to identify the affection of climate on the space arrangement of housing. The study starts from the curiosity about similar space structure of Indian housings at different climate area. Indian housings usually have courtyard at the center of its plan, though the 'Courtyard housing' is typical form of dry region's house type. Research method is comparative analysis of traditional houses of India, and the samples are selected from hot-dry city, Ahmedabad and hot-humid city, Bangalore. The conclusion is drawn through comparing main houses with traditional houses of other dry city - Jaipur - and humid cities - Trivandrum and Nilambur. It shows that both dry and humid region's housings has courtyard in common, but their spatial structures are not same at all. Houses of dry region shows organically connected spatial form, in order to maximize the cooling effect of ventilation. In contrast, the plan of houses in humid region shows opened, but can be closed in any time to prevent the penetration of moisture. Both Parekh house(Ahmedabad) and Koramangala house(Bangalore) left inconvenience of its arrangement, though the ventilation of air is the most important point of sustainability in hot region. The study could be the practical reference data for advanced sustainable housings of India which may built in the future.

Kengo Kuma is one of the features of the building is 'natural architecture'. He is saying that the construction of the building in which he is seeking is a natural material of construction is only applied to the issue as to whether the material nature, but that the relationship between humans, the environment, natural point of view in his book. Like repeating units are part of the two hundred ninety-four came mainly small ways to create a relationship, or have architectural features make up the sum of his architecture. I present a comprehensive study is reported in terms of that the 'grain' of such a small part of the unit, according to the architecture of Kengo Kuma mainly granulation characteristics of the construction of one of the practical expression studies Kengo Kuma. Is represented as louvers, check pattern, hole, granulation unit such trend, but have become developed in other directions such simple types are combined. Analysis and particle characteristics in terms of the architectural space of Kengo Kuma, serve as the purpose of the present study reveal that each of the features that have a meaning in the construction of any Kengo Kuma.

Development of digital technology, which is individualizing and differentiating the world, makes time and space facilitate multi-layering in the contemporary society. It gives a large influence on the contemporary architecture that inducing the visual and spatial experience. Also, It generates new images through the skin of architecture, which implies the contingent and fluid characteristics. These phenomenon show that various parameters are working on the architectural skin simultaneously. Such complexity make the structure of open space and diversity that are homogenized and synchronized. Like this, the architectural skin implies 'multiplicity': qualitative difference which is enable to change and create new images. This characteristic generates instant images changing variously and semantics constantly by the function of skin as a filter. Also, the architectural skin integrates or relocates of relationships between the various information and elements appearing in contemporary society in order to escape the customary relationship between internal and external. Furthermore, the inside and outside of the mixture as a collection of sense has been recognized as one image. This image of mixture consists of one unified continuous integration and extend the meaning of a fluid interface not just surface of the building. The skin of the contemporary architecture is very technical, so its meaning and role is expanded as a complex that exchange interaction. This means that the skin itself has functional elements of the integrated multiple skin to assist. Also it can form a multi-layered relationship and act as a wide range of interfaces depending on the perception of the observer. Therefore the multiplicity of the architectural skin indicates the importance as a boundary that generate images of new life through the sensory perception and implicit force. And it shows potential as the intermediary to try to communicate.

Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 6, 2014, Pages 33~41
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.6.033
Regeneration of abandoned industrial facilities can heighten the availability through potential values that cannot be found in newly-built buildings and through the sense of overscale space. Furthermore, backward regions can be activated by assigning their identity and establishing social-cultural infrastructures. The aim of the present study is to analyze and integrate of characteristics of design expression based on a case of creative space in Shanghai. A research on the creative space in Shanghi designedly proceeded according to government's extensive administrative support and policy. We keep appearances of industrial buildings as close as possible to their original condition, thereby revealing symbolism and forming unique characteristics that distinguish them from those of other areas. While keeping the shape characteristics of the bridge8, M50, Red Town, 2577 Greative Garden and 1933 Shanghai, we designed spaces in terms of spacial variability, oneness, accessibility and continuity and activated areas by inducing residents' participation and fostering art and cultural oriented facilities. These characteristics of design expression are factors to be considered in regenerating abandoned industrial facilities internally and hopefully they are used as a reference of design plan.
Comparison with Perception of Interaction between Finishing Materials and Lighting according to Preference of one's Spatial Sensitivity
Seo, Ji-Eun ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 6, 2014, Pages 42~50
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.6.042
The purpose of this study is to analyze the change of perception and to measure the degree of interaction between the lighting and the finishing materials according to preference types and the impacted factors to the spatial sensitivity of users. To do that, the this change was grasped through the experiment with Likert Scale and ANOVA of SPSS program to the simulated images. The result of this study is as following. Firstly, the personal difference in the perception of space comes from 'attention' in information processing process. The degree of the perception of users change strongly by lighting in the space expressed the 'modern natural'. Secondly, the atmosphere and the degree of perception are different in the preference of users to the spatial sensitivity and in impacted factors which are thought by users in the space sensitives. The users who prefer the 'decoration' feel the mood more strongly in the space. But the users who prefer the 'active' and 'intimacy' are opposite to that. The difference to the degree of perception is greater in the 'classic natural' than the others under the lighting turns on. Thirdly, an in-depth research which is considered of the interaction among the various factors is needed for finding the design methods for inducing the sensitivity of users in the space. And the ranking of the impacted factors should be understanded and applied to the research regarding the changes of perception in the space. Finally, this study has the limitation to be adapted to all of the situation for the space design methods. But this will be a basic data to study the design methods for users's sensitivity in the space.
A Study on the Design Methods Utilizing 'Congestion' and 'Void' from Rem Koolhaas's Architecture
Park, Sola ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 6, 2014, Pages 51~59
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.6.051
Rem Koolhaas has pursued new architectural approaches breaking with conventional ones. Around the 1990s when large-scale projects occurred with the union of Europe ahead, Koolhaas recognized the limits to the existing methods for responding to such changes. Accordingly, he came to use design methods based on 'congestion' and 'void' as strategical alternatives, which became the moment for him to leap forward from the previous working sphere based in Europe to becoming an architect who would be commissioned a number of large-scale global projects. Therefore, this study intends to investigate his design methods which utilized congestion and void, and to derive spatial characteristics from the projects based on such methods. First of all, the study looked into the historical background, definition and process of congestion and the void as design methods, and analyzed his projects to which such methods were applied by classifying them into the following categories: 1) the void that removes a space of singularity; 2) the void that penetrates space while making a flow; and 3) the void that is formed by vertical extrusion. Then, the characteristics of architectural spaces made in this way were identified as 1)the single-body appearance made by congestion and the following types of space made by the void: 2) the non-uniformly shaped space that looks like floating; 3) the flexible space with various flows and directions; and 4) the space with virtual possibilities that embrace contingent events. This understanding of Rem Koolhaas's design methods which were attempted in various ways at his critical turning point will be the foundation to understand the overall world of his works.

The features of the cultural phenomenon, 'Hybrid Culture,' can be analyzed through the concept of 'Meme,' the cultural gene continuously evolves. The architectural meme also has an effect as the cultural symbol on a space. It can be the solution to the urban problems, lack of contextualization caused by reckless development. Therefore, this study aims to examine the characteristics of the sustainable and effective renewal space by applying the concept of Meme. Theoretical analysis, characteristics of expression, and case study are conducted to analyze the Meme features of the renewal space. Particularly, this study focuses on the Meme features appeared in the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in German. The results obtained from this study is as written below. First, Meme renewal space is a design that can solve the contextual deficiency of architecture through the cultural renewal. Second, the true renewal space has the characteristics of meme space that organically changes as if an organism. Third, it is possible to conduct a detailed analysis on the organic characteristics according to the evolving phases-Mimesis, Memeplex, and Metameme. Fourth, the true meaning of sustainable renewal space is the Meme space encompasses the scope of urban. Lastly, the Meme space has a circulation system that each evolving phase, and new and old continuously exchange feedbacks.

DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.6.070
The purpose of this study is providing a usage of exterior, interior finish materials and color scheme for architectural design and the actual texture and pattern plans of finish materials from Le Corbuisier's work, Chapel Ronchamp. Chapel Ronchamp was analyzed to support the study for the interaction between texture usage and color expression. As a powerful design tool, texture, pattern and color of finish materials are very effective to alter the perception of the facade in the building. Most of architectural buildings, shapes and materials of elevations are monotonous and uniform. This study should be considered by details in the elevation of Chapel Ronchamp. As the part for developing and planning of architectural design, researching color plans and finish material is very important on real expression in the architectural space. As a result, this study will benefit in planning both the exterior and interior environments of color and finish material with texture and pattern.

Lighting in indoor space is being changed to system lighting converged with IT technology. Office space lighting with incandescent lamps and fluorescent lamps was completed through overall lighting plan by illumination in most cases, but convergence between LED lighting and IT technology enables the technology of responding to user requirements to be realized. Optical physical quantity suitable for humans and the lighting environment in accordance with user's sensibility, based on space function and user's behavior, would contribute to the improvement of service productivity, energy reduction, and enhancement of emotional satisfaction by providing user optimized lighting solution. Thus, user-customized system lighting guidelines to be applied with integration indicators of optics and sensibility are required. For the design elements required by users, environmental factors, product characteristics, optical characteristics, and sensibility factors are drawn from the design cases for office space and the survey, and the design check list and evaluation indicators are considered to reflect the requirements in the design and requirement indicators to give integrated satisfaction for optics and sensibility are developed. Purpose-centered design method from the user's viewpoint is applied to function-focused design through scenario, and it should be applied flexibly, as the new lightning design method solutions, to the concept design stage of space lighting design and device development. This paper, therefore, presents user-customized guidelines by pursuing the optics and sensibility evaluation and design method combining the requirement conditions and scenario, to be used for lighting content development and design.
Expressional Characteristics of Interior Design Presented in Exhibition Spaces of Jean-Michel Wilmotte
Song, Ga-Hyun ; Kim, Moon-Duck ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 6, 2014, Pages 87~94
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.6.087
Today, the growing number of international architects enters the open market of South Korean architecture and interior from exhibition spaces such as art galleries to buildings of major companies. Establishing new local landmarks, their works have a considerable influence on the development of architecture. Among many, French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte has worked consistently in South Korea. The purpose of this study is to analyze and put together the expression characteristic of the interior design in his exhibition spaces including Gana Art Gallery. Jean-Michel Wilmotte has designed based on the history, culture, society, and arts in France and other European countries, and is influenced by architects like Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Josef Hoffmann, and Carlo Scarpa. Such an influence is shown in the form of contrast between verticality and horizontality as well as the fortification in his modern classical characteristic, which is one of his expression characters. In his work of improving the ancient architecture, Wilmotte is good at creating a modern space through contextual expression, and the textural contrast between materials of the past and the present. Thus I performed an analysis of the expression characteristic of the interior design in National Museum of Contemporary Art of Chiado in Lisbon, Cognac Hennessy Museum in France, Gana Art Gallery in Korea, Mus
e du Pr
sident Jacques Chirac in Sarran, France, Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) in Beijing, and lastly Mus
e d'Orsay in Paris. The results show that he maintains the spatial context by applying contemporary design to the preserved existing structure, continues the flow of exhibition through the lightings in the corridors and on the ceiling, and seeks for a balance by adding vertical or horizontal elements to the elevation. In the interior, the staircase and exhibition structure are turned into objects, and the contrasting texture of the wall vitalizes the space. Wilmotte redesigns the space of the past and the present by using indirect joint that allows an organic connection of the old and new structures, and by minimizing the conflict between the two elements through prefabrication. The expression character of his interior design will be potential resources for architects and interior designers to develop their own design languages.
A Study on the Application of Universal Design Principles to Collective Housing for Senior citizen who lives alone - Focused on the 'Carnation House' in Gyeounggi-do ara -

Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 6, 2014, Pages 95~104
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.6.095
Today, the number of the elderly living alone without any family members is on a sharp rise, and those aged people living alone are making these social issues such as solitary death, depression and suicide more popular. In order to resolve the issues, some of the local governments have been supporting the elderly living alone in common houses that would be used by senior citizens only. This study became interested in this 'carnation house' which has been carried out targeting the elderly living alone in Gyeonggi-do, and selected elementary universal design factors that should be applied to general residential environments of the aged people and analyzed the factors. As a case study, this research investigated four carnation houses as research subjects and came up with these following ideas about how to make improvements. First, the study found out that all the entrances did not have raised letters and that UD has not been satisfactorily applied to both the thresholds and the effective widths, and that is considered something to be fixed. Second, in case of regular rooms and living rooms, none of the rooms failed to have safety doorknobs which should have been installed and plus, thresholds and stepped pulleys need to be removed, Third, it goes the same with the kitchens, and the thresholds should be eliminated while cabinets are secured. In addition, furniture that understands the elderly's measurements should be used. Fourth, in terms of restrooms, they should be designed to be spacious enough not to cause anyone in wheelchairs inconvenience, and the study suggests that the effective widths should be widened and that both the safety doorknobs and the emergency calls must be installed. Basically, after the test on the UD adaptability, the study concluded that the application rates in connection with the adaptability were low which led the study to assume that such result has been gained due to the lack of installation standards in relation to the common living facilities of the elderly. The study now argues that purposes of buildings should be first clarified and then, these detailed space planning guidelines that deal with general characteristics of the aged people should be established.
Reasons on the Body of Women from the Painting by Le Corbusier
Jun, Young-Mi ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 6, 2014, Pages 105~114
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.6.105
This study is intended to identify various reasons on the 'body' of women described in the paintings by Le Corbusier. As a great artist in the field of modern architecture, various figures of 'body' of women he painted were not a mere physiological body of a woman but a meaningful figure combined with many different types of concept in the social and cultural context. In the field of art, body is recently seen as a 'tool for thinking' that studies dealing with it are being actively conducted. Seen in this context, it is feasible to read the situations and causes at that time through movement and changes in the figure of women's bodies described in his painting. Even if it was a speculative inference, this study aimed examining what reasons and perspective Le Corbusier had when painting women's bodies and what message he intended to convey. Reasons on the 'bodies' of women derived in this study serve as an essence of mentality in understanding the spatial design that was constructed around the time of period. Adopting a different view from many of previous studies in the aspect of skills and spaces, it was intended to study changes in the complex and integrated causes in both spatial design and painting and re-interpret an essence of mentality of the spatial design in the humanistic approach according to the notions in society and culture.
Scanning Determination & Observation Features by Sex shown in the Process of Acquiring Visual Information - With the Object of Subway Station Hall Space -
Kim, Jong-Ha ; Choi, Gae-Young ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 6, 2014, Pages 115~124
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.6.115
This study has carried out scanning tests in order to figure out the features of scanning search by sex of space users, with the result of which the validity of data has been estimated. In this research, the scanning patterns were set up for verifying the typology of scanning paths and then the reason for determining scanning paths and the validity of estimation method were reviewed. Since the observation features depends on sex, the analysis of visual activities for acquiring any information in a space will reveal the intention and purpose of space users. The findings by analyzing the features of scanning pattern by sex which were found at the determination of scanning patterns can be defined as the followings. First, for estimating the process of space-information search, the movement distance at each point of continuative-observation data from the angle of eye-movement has been extracted, on the ground of which the fixation and movement of eye have been defined for the establishment of scanning-cut characteristics. Second, the scanning times were estimated for the extraction of effective observation data that would be used for comparative analysis, which showed that men had more data (3,398.2/64.4%) than women (2,998.2/55.6%). This enables the acknowledgment that the scanning cut of men was relatively less, which indicates that men will acquire more information on space than women in the process of observing any space. Third, men's scanning times (58.0 times/2.02 seconds) were less than those of women (71.9 times/1.39 seconds) while the scanning time of the former was longer than that of the latter, which shows the feature that it takes longer for men than women in scanning while the scanning times of the former is less than those of the latter. Fourth, the observation features can be determined that the combination of this result with the predominance character by sex for a general viewpoint to be employed indicates that while men employ mixed-scanning for observation activities to acquire space-information spending for longer time, women, by concentrated-scanning, focus on a single point for shorter time or stay at one location for a considerably long time for space-information acquirement.

Lee, So Mi ; Oh, Hye-Kyung ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 6, 2014, Pages 125~132
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.6.125
The purpose of this study was to investigate that to see how their traditional characteristics were reflected and expressed in Hanoi vietnamese contemporary public restaurants. For this, We visited Hanoi twice to have onsite research in August 2012 and 2013. According to the results of surveying Vietnamese public restaurants, all of the 12 cases had humane characteristics reflecting Vietnam traditional culture, showing Vietnamese unique traditional characteristics including intangible elements such as natural environment, life culture elements such as food culture, and formative aesthetic elements using indigenous ornaments. Different from luxury restaurants that had trade names on the theme of historical stories related to people or places and expressed various concepts formatively using photographs of Vietnamese politics and history and ornamental elements such as tableware, however, the public restaurants were simple in theme or concept. It is probably because most of the surveyed cases were situated in the old quarter to the north of the Hoan Kiem Lake and in the area to the west of the lake and their target customers were local people, so they reflected the Vietnamese traditional residence style and common people's life rather than designing the restaurants intentionally with specific concepts. As to the spatial expression characteristics of the surveyed cases, casual restaurants in Hanoi expressed only basic structure using basic construction materials and techniques with outdoor spaces in the form of Vietnam traditional tube house, and therefore, the overall atmosphere was contemporary. In indoor spaces as well, the general level was low, using uncharacteristic common design and color and cheap finishing materials and furniture. 83% of all cases showed the pattern of VM-VM-VT, being mainly contemporary by partially adopting Vietnamese unique ornamental elements for their outdoor and indoor spaces and using traditional elements supplementarily.

Shim, Eun-Ju ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 6, 2014, Pages 133~141
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.6.133
Graduate education in general means nurturing scholars who are capable of research that adds to the 'body of knowledge' and educators in the higher education system. Therefore 'discovering' new knowledge has always been a major role of graduate schools. However, interior design is a special field that 'application' can also produce new knowledge and therefore a wider understanding of scholarship is needed especially in the graduate level education. The purpose of this paper is to understand Interior Design graduate education system in the United States in order to develop issues that need to be discusses and addressed in Korea. Therefore, this paper first examines meanings of graduate degrees in general and current situation of Interior degrees offered in Korea. Then investigates the different types of graduate degrees in the U.S. such as post-professional degrees, first-professional degrees, and differences in general degree(M.A., M.S.) and professional degrees (M.F.A., M.I.D.). The researcher has used websites of each school and information lists of degrees offered by KIID and IDEC that serves as the main educators council in each countries. The characteristics of graduate degrees in America can be described as a structured system based on variety, flexibility, and distinction. For instance, M.F.A means a professional degree that is focused on building theory based project abilities, longer period to study but counted as a terminal in the field. However, in Korea even though the title of the degrees may differ there is not much difference shown in the educational contents. Therefore issues such as developing a more universal and international degree system, flexible and selective educational road-map, mutual understanding and unified system between various organizations for better graduate education system are proposed. Moreover, hope to start a discourse on defining scholarship and professionalism in the field of Interior Design.

DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.6.150
Recently, violent crimes against the socially disadvantaged have become more frequent and became serious social issues. In addition, compared to the past, the crime methods have become more diverse and intricate, which results in larger damages. For those reasons, the public are increasingly concerned about crimes and it is detrimental to the quality of life in general. Currently, safety in alleys and other residential spaces is protected only by mechanical and managerial functions such as CCTV and police patrol. Safe environment from crimes can be achieved only if there are environmental and spatial plans such as CPTED (Crime Prevention through Environmental Design) principles. The purpose of this study is to propose a direction for spatial planning that can prevent crimes through environmental elements, by researching the spatial planning and current status of alleys and residential spaces from the viewpoint of CPTED. To do so, first, a review checklist was created based on five principles of CPTED and field surveys were conducted on the northern districts of Busan with high crime rates. Second, the problems were analyzed through the field surveys and checklist was classified based on five principles of CPTED to propose improvements for each item. Also, a computer graphic simulation was used to suggest a design proposal. We expect that the application of the basic environmental design principles and guidelines for CPTED will have the effect of creating crime-free and safe spaces in alleys and residential environment.

Kim, Sang-Hoon ; Han, Hae-Ryon ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 23, issue 6, 2014, Pages 160~168
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.6.160
Five strongest crimes against women has rapidly increased recently, and women' anxiety is also increasing. Especially, women who reside alone in houses show significantly high anxiety. Such social change is increasing necessity of applying CPTED to housing environment of a single woman household. However, there have been less than enough number of researches on application on CPTED to housing environment of single woman household. So, this study would like to suggest housing environment of single woman household through CPTED guideline. With respect to research method, this study surveyed single woman households in their twenties and thirties who reside at single houses in Gwanak Gu, Gangnam Gu, Songpa Gu, and Mapo Gu in Seoul about necessity of CPTED guideline. Based on the survey results, this study conducted frequency analysis and descriptive statistics; and conducted independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Scheffe's posteriori test, according to demographic characteristics. As a result, differences in the contents of CPTED guideline by the demographic characteristics turned out to be small, generally. Thus, I concluded that suggestion for housing environment according to characteristics is not necessary. Instead, I would suggest contents of CPTED guideline that gained more than 4 points for housing environment. Research results of this study are as follow. First, 'Securing view of inside and outside of the house and controlling access' should be applied to housing environment of single woman households in their twenties and thirties residing in single houses in Seoul. Second, 'Securing view of an alley and improving walking space' should be applied. Third, 'installing CCTV and emergency bell' should be applied. Fourth, 'reinforcing territoriality of space' should be applied.

DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2014.23.6.169
The purpose of this study is to analyze the design characteristics of Hanok hotel. This study was approached by using theoretical investigation and a field survey. The field survey analyzed the current situations by conducting the master plan layout, architecture and interior design of the Hanok hotel. The field survey was tested by examining four different Hanok hotels from February 2014 to July 2014. After all, the results were analyzed based on given categories. The results of this research can be summarized as following. First, the characteristic of the master plan layout in Hanok hotel was appeared as "ㄷ" and "ㅡ" shapes. Those layouts were based on the spatial and the functional aspects of Hanok hotel facilities. Second, three different structural methods such as the korean traditional wooden structure, concrete, and masonry method were used in Hanok hotel construction to deliver the traditional architecture aspects while considering the functionality and convenience of the building. Third, most of Hanok hotels had the limited furniture range. The consideration of using several types of traditional furniture in different rates of the guest rooms help to increase the service quality and customer's satisfaction. Fourth, there were no diversity of using materials and colors in Hanok hotels that only few of them were used to express the traditional look. This study selects factors affecting form type of hospital architecture by considering studies and references on hospital architecture type in korea and other countries in general. Also this study classifies general hospitals chronologically and analyzes type change of general hospitals in relation with periodic change of healthcare environment. Through this, this study aims to analyze chronological change of general hospitals' form type and provide the current of hospital architecture's general type. The form type classification of this study is classification according to the form of ward, classification according to the relationship between ward and D.T.D(Diagnostic and Treatment department), classification according to the relationship between O.P.D(Out Patient department) and D.T.D, classification according to the rate of centralization, classification according to the circulation system. The form type of ward changed from plate type to tower type, and the circulation system of ward changed from middle corridor to double corridor, the number of Team Nursing chaged from 1 to 2 in 1990. On the other hand the chage of others classifications took place from 1990' to 2010'. It is judged that this overall change is appeared by a change from an inpatien-oriented system to an outpatient-oriented system followed by an increase in number of outpatients, an increase in amenities in ground floor and adoption of healing environment for patients and visitors.

Entrance floor in hospital has became important space for medical service in holistic perspective and image enhancement. However, basically a discussion of the qualitative properties and the role of public space is paucity in change of public spaces paradigm. In accordance with this problem, this study consider the change of paradigm in public space based on earlier studies and create classification criterion of space. According to the criterion, G/D ratio and the qualitative spatial area ratio of 26 general hospitals which were planned over 500 beds are analyzed by case study method. The conclusion of this study is as follows. 1) The space according to the medical function is variable element. So the public space should be planned from function-subordinate space to self-reliance space in the future. 2) There is no correlation between the high G/D ratio and the high ratio of qualitative spacial area. In other word It's hard to say that the public space which G/D ratio is high is qualitative space. 3) Since 2000, various types in accordance with the circulation system is applied to public space. And ratio of qualitative spacial area is relatively high in the street type and the concourse type. 4) The qualitative spatial area ratio of stay space is higher than passage's one.

In elderly housing facilities where are elderly living facilities, the importance of outdoor space for psychological healing and stability, health improvement and environmental improvement is increasing, since elderly people suffer from depression and are hostile to these facilities. This study aims to identify if outdoor spaces in elderly housing facilities in Seoul have environments appropriate for the elderly and to suggest problems and improvements. For achieving this purpose, nine elderly housing facilities in Seoul were chosen and a field survey was conducted targeting five facilities with outdoor spaces. Based on the previous studies, the concepts of elderly housing facility and outdoor space were organized. Then, a checklist was drawn up as a framework of analysis for evaluating the present state of outdoor spaces of elderly housing facilities and space planning, and improvements were explored. It was found that elderly housing facilities in Seoul had good connectivity and accessibility to the surrounding areas, but there were few supporting facilities, except for resting places. Also, the result of analysis of the present state showed that most elderly housing facilities were located in high lands and the safety of elderly people was being threatened while moving, due to the absence of handrails. In conclusion, it is considered that outdoor space of elderly housing facility should be planned in consideration of safety, affordance and cognition out of the standards of researcher's evaluation tool.
