Characteristics of Prospect and Refuge in Gyeongbokgung Palace focusing on the Biophilic Design
Hwang, Ji-Hyoun ; Lee, Hyunsoo ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 24, issue 5, 2015, Pages 3~11
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2015.24.5.003
The human instinct toward nature is biophilia as a psychological term. There have been a number of empirical evidences confirmed that natural features in buildings enhance human's comfort focusing on biophilia. However, the evolution of society, science, and industry has separated modern buildings from nature. Therefore, this paper addresses the assumption that the admiration for historical buildings in contemporary society is attribute to the qualities of biophilic design. Prospect and refuge, one of the strategies for biophilic design, ultimately provides the opportunity to recover from stress and tension. The purpose of this study is to figure out elements of prospect and refuge based on the design theory of biophilia for psychological healing. This study explores the Gyeongbokgung Palace with the design elements of prospect and refuge in biophilia. It also measures these elements quantitatively with the contrast using Adobe Photoshop CS6, and the area ratio of prospect and refuge. The results of this research verify that the conflicting characteristics of prospect and refuge are identified simultaneously, it is significant to attract people. Gangnyeongjeon Hall and Gyotaejeon Hall, the living quarters for the king and queen, propose the intense pattern of refuge characteristics more than other areas. The mathematical properties of the area ratio show that the pattern of prospect-refuge characteristics change in particular design elements.

Lee, Youn-Jae ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 24, issue 5, 2015, Pages 12~20
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2015.24.5.012
The objective of this paper is to propose rural housing planning guidelines by conducting a survey on the needs of the elderly people engaged in farming activities and looking into complaints about their houses targeting 120 people from 50s to 70s. The method employed was a survey with questionnaires. The survey results showed the needs of the elderly for the rural housing are different from those of general retired elderly people because they still engage in farming activities even if they grow old. The needs are as follows. First, the respondents show high preference for the foyer storage to store equipments and goods related to agriculture. Second, the respondents have needs for enough kitchen area accommodating their house work and rural life. Lastly, the respondents highly prefer well planned storehouses in the exterior. In addition, they also want the storehouses directly connected with the house because this plan can save their workforce. They recognize storehouses are the most poorly planned space in the rural house because of the unsatisfactory space area and interior space planning. These needs should be reflected on the planning of rural housing for the elderly engaged in farming activities.
A Study on the Transborder Characteristics of Forms in Baroque Space
Han, Myoung-Sik ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 24, issue 5, 2015, Pages 21~30
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2015.24.5.021
The visual expression system of space realized in Baroque aesthetics is basically grounded on the philosophical view to the world of the time, that is to say the changes of the thinking system in the Renaissance and ontology based on it. Structural aesthetics in Baroque freed from Plato's system of harmony but grounded on Leibniz's process philosophy formed a crucial background to highlight the formal nature of the whole and build a structure based on the inclusive principle of formativity. Also, to solve problems to realize the order and consistency of forms from the whole, Baroque adopted the nonlinear and nonphysical formative system as the principle of building space in works of art. Combining the order system of nature in the Renaissance with manneristic dynamicity as well as formative principle taking shape geometrically, it did establish a variety of aesthetic concepts based on the results of infiniteness and exaggeration expressed from the two forces, the Renaissance and mannerism. This study has found that such Baroque aesthetics did overcome classical planeness and draw continuous mobility from the structures and forms based on that with the transborder concepts of structures, the components of space, as an ultimate system of formative expression. Moreover, this author has drawn and analyzed with the cases of the 17th-century art and architecture the transborder elements manifesting the nature of diverse formative visual elements produced in artistic expressions with that principle of aesthetics, that is the intangible concept of Baroque. Based on that, this researcher intends to come up with technical solutions to solve a lot of environmental and architectural problems we are severely facing nowadays in terms of environmental, physical, and emotional aspects with the theoretical clues and results acceptable to this contemporary era.
Architectural Manifestation of Hiroshi Sugimoto's Photographic Infinity
Ahn, Seongmo ;
Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 24, issue 5, 2015, Pages 31~41
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2015.24.5.031
The objective of this research is to investigate the artistic meaning of "infinity," manifested by the fourth dimensional value in the genres of photography and architecture, by analyzing how Sugimoto Hiroshi's photographic spatio-temporal infinity transfers to his architectural approaches. The research is initiated by scrutinizing the themes, characteristics, techniques, and artistic meaning of Sugimoto's famous photographic series, including "Seascapes," "Theatres," and "Architecture"; the concept of infinity can be defined as infinite divergence and infinitesimal convergence between antithetical concepts in time, space, and being. Sugimoto's photographic works display "temporal infinity" by connecting ancient times, the present, and the future; "spatial infinity" by offering the potential for transformation from flat photographs into infinite three-dimensional space and fourth-dimensional concepts through time; and "existential infinity" of life and death by making us think about being and essence, being and time, and origin and religion. These perspectives are also used to analyze Sugimoto's architectural works, such as "Appropriate Proportion" and "Glass Tea House Mondrian." As a result, the research finds that in Sugimoto's architectural approaches, spatio-temporal infinity between antithetical values is manifested through the concept of origin, geometric form, extended axis, immaterial threshold, transparent materiality, and connectivity of light and shadow, provoking our existence to transcend into infinity itself.

As an apartment house as well as improving quality of life is becoming one of the brands, it is increasing the importance of the outer space with the facilities in the housing complex. In particular, the outdoor playground such as the community facilities that children and adults share as the activity areas for residents has received attention. However, actually children have not used many of Korean apartment housing playgrounds that were installed formally in the scrap area according to the housing plan by residential construction standards. it is considered necessary to improve the quality of the playground in housing complex and reform it in order to make the eco-friendly play space in which children can play safely and h healthily. As an alternative, we analyzed the eco-friendly properties of the playgrounds installed in the eco-friendly housing complex in Germany and derived the main planning elements of eco-friendly playground. In the observational survey of the 10 playgrounds in 9 housing complexes in 5 regions in Germany, we evaluated the environment-friendliness of these playgrounds in the 8 fields(location and placement, ecological environment, play space, play equipment and facilities, additional facilities, materials and resources, energy saving, environmental load reduction) according to the levels(suitable, partial reflection, unsuitable, non-reflection) of reflection of eco-friendly planning factors. The following is the summary of the results about the reflection of eco-friendly planning factors. In terms of "suitable": location and placement(88.8%), play equipment and facilities(73.5%), additional facilities(60.6%), environmental load reduction(54%), and ecological environment(50%) were higher than others. In terms of "unsuitable": there was nothing. In terms of "non-reflection": energy saving(95%), additional facilities(32.2%), and materials and resources(30.9%) were in order. Therefore, on the basis of these results, this study proposed the planning indicators to be considered first and the planning factors that should be complemented and improved in the construction of apartment housing playground in future.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the change of visual stimulus of users to the space through the experiment of EEG and the satisfaction of users depends on the lighting. To do that, the results measured with EEG experiment focusing on Beta
were compared to each other to figure out difference in the changes of the activation of human brain on lighting's situation as the lighting off and on in the same space. The difference in the results was verified according to the characteristic of users which classified with 4 types of the spatial sensitivities. The results of this study are as following. Firstly, the spacial sensitivity of user is to communicate well with the different senses with stimulus through interaction among the elements. At this time, the brain plays a major role in build the spacial sensitivity of users as the place to make form. Secondly, there are the differences in the activation of brain depends on lighting situation even in the same space. The stimulus into the brain became generally stronger in images with lighting on than off. Especially, the response in the occipital lobe which connected with the visual center turn out strongly in the image of 'modern natural'. Because the visual stimulus interact well with the bright color, the reflectional texture and the rough texture painted the dark color. Thirdly, the satisfaction of users changed with lighting in the space. But we could know that the satisfaction of users isn't be related to the visual stimulus through the results of this study. Finally, there isn't the difference in the activation degree of brain according to the characteristic which are preference of users into 4 types of the spatial sensitivity through the results came from ANCOVA(analysis of covariance) with SPSS Program 22.

This paper depicts a case study of the BIM (Building Information Modeling)-enabled evaluation of design alternatives for an actual remodeling project in Yeongwol, Korea. The increase of urban population and income followed by the growth of economy has derived massive supply of grand scale housing project in Korea since 1970s. Consequently, building remodeling became one of the feasible resolutions for renovating such old housings in these days. This paper aims to introduce a technical approach to such remodeling projects based on BIM-enabled applications focusing on quantitative analysis of design alternatives. Among the technical issues of such building remodeling projects, this paper focuses on the BIM-enabled area analysis and comparison between design alternatives to support decision-making even in early phase of remodeling design process. BIM and its variety of applications have broadly influenced the domain of AEC-FM (Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Facility Management) within the lifecycle of buildings. As one of the applications facilitated by BIM, the automated area calculation and scenario-based comparison between alternatives can play an important role in the early phase of remodeling project. We modeled three design alternatives (buildings) and three housing modules (units) based on the actual case in Yeongwol city, Korea using a BIM design authoring tool. Nine combinatorial BIM models were demonstrated for the BIM-enabled review process described in this paper. To determine the most optimal design scenario among nine alternatives, this paper demonstrates a result of the conducted spatial program review. The main subject includes specific spatial program issues on; 1) the number of unit spaces; and 2) area of individual/grouped and private/shared spaces.

At this present, the world is in the era of digital and culture.Tourist resources through cultural infrastructure have been a crucial factor of a country's competitiveness. A Museum is tourism resource facility like one of core cultural infrastructures which provides experiential culture, history and tradition. The field of a planning and a design for a museum should be recognized like professional design industry.n Korea, the government has various laws and systems to support the design promotion policy but it is not sufficient. If you plan to extend the scope of the maintenance of law and institutions As today 'Exhibition Industry Development Act, which is responsible for maintenance, including a permanent exhibition area in the exhibition industry facilities will be efficient alternative. And also, it would like to analyze states of the orders in the exhibition design industry for past five years (2010 ~ 2014) and show the problems and alternatives. Exhibition business-related orders investigation into the recent five years to analyze and suggest improvements. In the delivery method it was found three types of goods, the services, the delivery method through the analysis of the enforcement order to the Corporation and that are mixed.If these alternatives has been reviewed and used for basic data to promote professional companies and designers for museums, it must be expected to be well worth a careful study.

In modern city, art museum is regarded as significant institutions because it includes educational roles beyond the means of facilities for historical exhibitions. Based on these flow, various research of museum's space with view from the operational point to the spatial analysis point has been approached. Moreover, it is required to address human behavior in art museum space on the ground that lots of audience move simultaneously. In the field of interior architecture, it is also necessary to analyze how design elements affect the human behavior directly and use the method of controling a circulation. In this research, based on the role and importance of the basic components of the interior space, re-interprets the exhibition space based on the relevant theory, to comprehensively examine the influence the shape of the space is on the substantially walking behavior. Therefore, first is to determine whether the spatial type corresponding to the position of the connectors in the exhibition space. Second is to conduct the investigation observation for gathering the actual viewing exhibition circulation. Finally, it analyzed whether the observed actual circulation and planned circulation matched. As the result, the position of the connectors is that causes the difference of the spatial configuration, which affects the viewing circulation was found. The significance of the research is to present the form to plans of the interior space as a method of reducing congestion perception of viewing circulation.
