Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 25, issue 3, 2016, Pages 3~10
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2016.25.3.003
The unexpected expansion of the built environment has allowed for high-density and high-rise buildings. As high-density dwellings compromise privacy, the requirements for balancing between interacting with others and protecting privacy are increasing. In this respect, Korean traditional architecture provides privacy through a proper balance of openness and closure in the courtyard garden. However, it is difficult to analyze privacy quantitatively, as it depends on the individual experience and psychology. The analyzing for visual privacy is a significant issue to resolve a conflict with others and enhance human's comfort. Therefore, this paper addresses the assumption that visual privacy could ultimately be quantified based on the concept of prospect and refuge, one of the design strategies for psychological wellbeing. The purpose of this study is to examine visual privacy in the royal palace in Korea, Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung. It measures spatial configuration in each buildings using space syntax, and the area ratio of prospect and refuge through an image analysis with Adobe Photoshop CS6. The mathematical properties of connectivity, depth, control value, integration and the area ratio of prospect and refuge are partially available for quantifying visual privacy in buildings.
A Study on the Organization of Space Analysis of Usonian Houses of Frank Lloyd Wright Using the Space Syntax - Concentrated on the Usonian House Floor Plans -

DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2016.25.3.011
The aim of this study is to analyze the organization of ithe internal space of Usonian houses that were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright between the 1930s and the 1950s. The Space Syntax Program was used to analyze spatial structure of these Usonian houses. The research range has been done on 9 case studies of Usonian house floor plans, which were designed from the 1930s to the 1950s. The shape of unit floor plans of Usonian house are usually in various L types, - types and transformed types etc.. The research results are as follows : 1) The service space(Kitchen etc.)is located at the center of house and it plays a role in separating the private space(bedroom etc.) and public space(living room etc.). 2) All of the bedrooms of Usonian houses have common characteristic : they are connected by a galley(corridor). 3) The organization of the inside space of most of these houses showed a tendency segregation space. 4) The galley inside space of Usonian house is the most integrated space in the house 5) The living room of the 1930s houses was analyzed as segregation space but it of 1940s and 1950s houses was analyzed as integration space 6) Although bedrooms are connected by galley, which is the highest integrated space of the inside space, this space is analyzed as a segregated space.

DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2016.25.3.021
For the elderly with declining sensory due to aging, various sense stimulation factors provided in indoor environment is desirable healing environment. This study aims to propose the direction of sensory healing environment by adapting the richness of natural environment in indoor place based on the biophilic design theory with implementation method of sensory richness environment. The healing environment was limited to the ward in the beginning, but it has widened its range to the whole place, and the lobby is considered quiet important to healing. Therefore, this study selected lobby space of geriatric hospital as study subject. As for the study method, we deducted the analytic matrix focusing on the property and elements of the direct and indirect experience of nature appearing in the biophilic design theory, and analyzed the field investigation of subject space. Also, this study paid attention to point where the hotel lobby leads the change of emotional environment, and conducted analysis and comparison by deciding this is what the hotel and geriatric hospital should direct to. As the result, the biophilic design factor of hotel is actively expressed by complex direction of various factors, but as for the geriatric hospital, it was rather passive and simple in expression. The adaptation ratio between hotel and geriatric hospital was almost more than twice times difference in average.

The technique for Eye-tracking is to trace the movements of pupils so that the eye's exploration response to be digitized. The procedure of Observation Experiment shows a mutual environmental characteristics between men and measuring devices. In order to improve the reliability and to secure the objectivity of the data acquired from eye-tracking, it is very important to analyze the procedures for the experiment to be prepared and the test data to be saved. Based on this viewpoint, the convergent exploration activities at the observation experiment with the objects of sport images were examined to find out what influences the context effect given by experimental environments have on this experiment. In addition, the starting time of attention affecting the reliability of observation data has been estimated. When the observation time is to be subdivided by the unit of second. The attention disperses for the individual characteristics to be appreciated. However, in case of analysis by the overall average, there was the problem that the section of attention dispersed to make it difficult to analyze the subjects' observation features. The study results made it possible to understand the physiological characteristics which were near unconsciousness, when there was an intensive attention for the first 3 seconds and the observation data were shown to be in ordinary range after 4 seconds. The analysis of observation with the focus of the intensive attention enabled the analysis with the first 3 seconds excepted so that it might approach the ordinary range of observation data. The distribution of attention for the first 3 seconds showed the intensive attention, which was on the center. The emergence of intensive attention and the overlapping of the centers can be considered as a context effect due to the correction for the preparing process of experiment. Accordingly, it is thought to be helpful to the security of objectivity and the construction of reliability of eye-tracking data to analyze the observation features shown after the deletion of the data for the first 3 seconds.

DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2016.25.3.060
This experimental study measures the emotional and physiological responses of customers as to cafe facade design. It is done through eye-tracking and EEG response experiments. Specifically, their visual concentration and EEG concentration are analyzed in line with their facade preferences. The findings are as follows. First, the correlation between their facade preferences and visual concentration on facades is as follows: Highly preferable facades have a lower visual concentration frequency than the less preferable facades. Second, an analysis of
lattice division of facades shows that all facades have a high visual concentration for signs. The exceptions are F(6), F(7), F(8), and F(10). There is no correlation between the facade preferences and visual concentration behaviors for particular facade elements. Third, an analysis of prefrontal lobe's facade concentration shows that there is no correlation between the preferences and EEG concentration. However, there are big differences in the prefrontal lobe activity of 12 subjects depending on the facade. In particular, nine of them (3, 9, 13, 14, 15, 28, 36, 38, 43) show an activated prefrontal lobe as to the highly preferable facades-F(1), F(2), F(3), and F(4). However, such activation is not detected on the less preferable facades-F(9), F(10), F(11), and F(12).

There are various form of public elements in modern urban space. These public elements mingle with sociocultural elements which consist of each city, determining urban environment's image. Especially, since the social value of design becomes important, the social role of public design has been emphasized as an effective value for public interest and environment. It is just about 10 years since design mind in the public sector has been made domestically. Even though domestic public design has been studied not so long, it has developed with radical change of social culture and science technology. This study targets public environment in modern dense urban space. Also, it grasps the trend of public design studies through analysing and documentary survey of the existing studies, and based on that result, aims at presenting the direction that domestic public design studies should progress. This study selected 253 theses(1989.6~2015.11) by collecting primary, secondary data about public design studies, and implemented overall meta-analysing about the trend of domestic public design studies. As a result, public design has been studied intensively in the field of design about environment, architecture, etc. The trend analyzing of study purpose and keyword has a tendency which is weighted towards exploratory study focused on suggestion and development about object and realm of public design. The trend analyzing of study area tends to study overall part of public space or public facility rather than specific area and object. The most parts of studies analyze domestic area, especially Seoul metropolitan area. Also, the study method weighted in favor of some qualitative analysis has been utilized.

The street artist Luzinterruptus was born in Spain, is a leader in the field of New Genre Public Art brush on a canvas of light in the night. They should seek the views of other common color system and color environments. The method of research is urban design, we consider the concept of the public good understanding, and New Genre Public Art. It also analyzes the environmental color of Luzinterruptus to take advantage of the phenomenology by David Katz color classification. The scope of the thesis is focused on the analysis of the works featured in their website and webzine. Then select a sculpture installation information is stated on the environmental color of their work. The role of environmental color in their work is not an aesthetic experience of harmonious urban landscape was seeking Public Art. The citizens of the area and the installation work themselves. Also it listed as demolition after the exhibition to realize the difference with other people and take advantage to environmental color. Therefore, they the contemporary agenda in many part of narrative takes in the garbage or disposables that you can easily look at our surroundings, In addition, citizens are directly experiencing the fantastic custom-made lights and colors and objects of the oversize as a potential recalls memories. Thus, the use of environmental color comfortable life there is horizontal participation and communication of the 'citizens' critical perspective of the 21st century cumulative cities.

Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 25, issue 3, 2016, Pages 121~128
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2016.25.3.121
Focusing on the cases applied to korean brand-name apartments In 1960s, economical growth and introduction of western-type cultures led to a boom of apartment construction. After internationalization'in 1980s through Olympic games in 1988, korean culture has attracted attention and individual life quality has been improved. Since 1990s, changes in personal life style has affected the housing culture and the construction companies started moving from quantitative supply to developing their own differential characteristics. Differentiation scheme triggered by construction companies since mid-1990s mainly focused on various ideas for space deployment. Space plans include such things as a private ground, a kitchen in the south, etc. while interior plans include to provide selection of the korean traditional style, natural or casual one. 'korean traditional style' apartment is one of such theme of the brand-named apartment. Interests on 'Tradition' can be broken down into a social trend and media trend. Firstly, the former includes the designation of Bukchon as a reserving area, one of the governmental 'Hanok Survival Program', and traditional building promotion scheme on the basis of construction policy plans. Secondly, the latter covers the interests which attract through the media showing oriental cosmetics, korean culture export via Hallyu, popularity of korean dramas, etc. Thus, it seems worth studying on the apartments with traditional factors. And also, this study aims to setup the concept and trends of korean traditional style apartments through the interior expression on the korean-factor space developed by brand-name apartments so that it could correct such false knowledge out of misunderstood concept of traditional space which results from simple decoration or structure type not accompanying Korean emotion or spirit rendered by some misleading media.

Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal, volume 25, issue 3, 2016, Pages 129~137
DOI : 10.14774/JKIID.2016.25.3.129
Dark and desolate underground parking spaces in commercial facilities are optimal spaces for crime. First, this study reviewed 15 precedent CPTED guidelines and related literatures, and as a result extracted 45 CPTED planning criteria for underground parking facilities. Secondly by field survey, we investigated six parking spaces in commercial facilities whether they were planned properly based on 45 checklist items, in six categories of CPTED principles. In result, target facilities showed average 46.8% relevance ratio, which means less than a half of 45 items of CPTED planning factors were not applied. Guidelines suggest desirable illuminance level of more than 100 lux, however the measurement of illuminance levels in some parking spaces showed below 50 lux. Relatively department stores were keeping CPTED guidelines better than large discount mart and mixed used facilities. Definition of territory of loading dock and customer area should be clarified, clear signage and color scheme in different zones should be represented with higher level of territorial responsibilities and surveillance in mixed used facilities for further improvement.
