Identifying Bridging Nodes and Their Essentiality in the Protein-Protein Interaction Networks
Ahn, Myoung-Sang ; Ko, Jeong-Hwan ; Yoo, Jae-Soo ; Cho, Wan-Sup ;
Journal of the Korea Industrial Information Systems Research, volume 12, issue 5, 2007, Pages 1~13
In this research, we found out that bridging nodes have great effect on the robustness of protein-protein interaction networks. Until now, many researchers have focused on node's degree as node's essentiality. Hub nodes in the scale-free network are very essential in the network robustness. Some researchers have tried to relate node's essentiality with node's betweenness centrality. These approaches with betweenness centrality are reasonable but there is a positive relation between node's degree and betweenness centrality value. So, there are no differences between two approaches. We first define a bridging node as the node with low connectivity and high betweenness value, we then verify that such a bridging node is a primary factor in the network robustness. For a biological network database from Internet, we demonstrate that the removal of bridging nodes defragment an entire network severally and the importance of the bridging nodes in the network robustness.

Research on human identification in ubiquitous environment has recently attracted a lot of attention. As one of those research, gait recognition is an efficient method of human identification using physical features of a walking person at a distance. In this paper, we present a human shape extraction and tracking for gait recognition using geodesic active contour models(GACMs) combined with mean shift algorithm The active contour models (ACMs) are very effective to deal with the non-rigid object because of its elastic property. However, they have the limitation that their performance is mainly dependent on the initial curve. To overcome this problem, we combine the mean shift algorithm with the traditional GACMs. The main idea is very simple. Before evolving using level set method, the initial curve in each frame is re-localized near the human region and is resized enough to include the targe region. This mechanism allows for reducing the number of iterations and for handling the large object motion. The proposed system is composed of human region detection and human shape tracking modules. In the human region detection module, the silhouette of a walking person is extracted by background subtraction and morphologic operation. Then human shape are correctly obtained by the GACMs with mean shift algorithm. In experimental results, the proposed method show that it is extracted and tracked efficiently accurate shape for gait recognition.

Journal of the Korea Industrial Information Systems Research, volume 12, issue 5, 2007, Pages 163~172
ESC has been used as a tool for evaluating overall performance of firms. ESC focuses mainly on building a balanced viewpoint comprising perspectives and their metrics. It is, therefore, difficult to value overall strategic achievements of a company derived by consolidating various perspectives and metrics. Because of the absence of a method for consolidating ESC metrics and computing total score based on these metrics, it is difficult to evaluate whole strategic performance and find core obstacle parts of performance. In this paper, we suggest a method of normalizing a numerical value of metrics with different units, and calculating the total score of ESC metrics. We conduct a case study of evaluating the effectiveness of CRM to illustrate the applicability and feasibility of the suggested method.
