Performance Analysis of Wireless Sensor Nodes over Indoor and Outdoor Environments

Wireless sensor nodes are widely used for various applications such as environmental monitoring. In this paper, the RSSI and PER are measured for the indoor environment with the various interferences such as obstacles(concrete walls, steel doors) and the 2.4GHz wireless LAN interference. Also, the RSSI and PER are measured for the outdoor environments. From the measured values of the RSSI and PER, the guideline for the stable operation of the wireless sensor network is suggested.
Smart Dynamic Pricing in Cognitive Radio Systems

Smart Dynamic Pricing has been introduced to address the under-utilised network resources problem in mobile telecommunications systems. In this paper, we investigate the applicability of Smart Dynamic Pricing and its signalling models into Cognitive Radio Systems. Cognitive Radio System is defined as one in which cognitive radios are employed to access shared spectrum and/or dynamically allocated spectrum. Network elements, protocols, traffic and control channels, and system architecture are proposed for the implementation of Smart Dynamic Pricing in Cognitive Radio System. It is found that Smart Dynamic Pricing and its signalling models can be applied to Cognitive Radio Systems.
Integrative Modeling of Wireless RF Links for Train-to-Wayside Communication in Railway Tunnel

In railway tunnel environment, the reliability of a high-data-rate and real-time train-to-wayside communication should be maintained especially when high-speed train moves along the track. In China and Europe, the communication frequency around 900 MHz is widely used for railway applications. At this carrier frequency band, both of the solutions based on continuously laid leaky coaxial cable (LCX) and discretely installed base-station antennas (BSAs), are applied in tunnel radio coverage. Many available works have concentrated on the radio-wave propagation in tunnels by different kinds of prediction models. Most of them solve this problem as natural propagation in a relatively large hollow waveguide, by neglecting the transmitting/receiving (Tx/Rx) components. However, within such confined areas like railway tunnels especially loaded with train, the complex communication environment becomes an important factor that would affect the quality of the signal transmission. This paper will apply a full-wave numerical method to this case, for considering the BSA or LCX, train antennas and their interacted environments, such as the locomotive body, overhead line for power supply, locomotive pantograph, steel rails, ballastless track, tunnel walls, etc.. Involving finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and uni-axial anisotropic perfectly matched layer (UPML) technique, the entire wireless RF downlinks of BSA and LCX to tunnel space to train antenna are precisely modeled (so-called integrative modeling technique, IMT). When exciting the BSA and LCX separately, the field distributions of some cross-sections in a rectangular tunnel are presented. It can be found that the influence of the locomotive body and other tunnel environments is very significant. The field coverage on the locomotive roof plane where the train antennas mounted, seems more homogenous when the side-laying position of the BSA or LCX is much higher. Also, much smoother field coverage solution is achieved by choosing LCX for its characteristic of more homogenous electromagnetic wave radiation.
A review on several methods for fast generation of digital Fresnel holograms

Computer generated holography (CGH) is technology for generating holograms of synthetic, three dimensional (3D) objects which may not exist in the physical world. The process, however, requires heavy amount of computation as the resolution of a hologram is significantly higher than that of a typical optical image. This paper reviews four modern techniques for fast generation of digital Fresnel holograms which are important in the development of holographic video systems. The methods that will be described include the virtual window, sub-line, wavefront recording plane (WRP), and the interpolative WRP schemes. These works share the common objective to generate digital Fresnel hologram at a speed that is close to the video frame rate, and with complexity which is realizable with affordable computing and reconfigurable hardware devices. The author will present the principles and realization of these works, as well as some potential area of research in digital holography.
Determining a Minimum Initial Delay Time for Download & Seamless Playback of Multimedia Contents on Network Digital Signage

Digital signage is referred to as a smart electronic display system that delivers multimedia-based information and advertisements to customers. Typically, the digital signage starts its playback after downloading a list of multimedia contents from network storage to its local disk. However, a way of downloading the entire contents before its playback entails a long initial delay time. In this paper, we formulate a problem of the initial delay time and provide a solution to compute a minimally demanded initial delay time according to a given network bandwidth and qualities/sizes of the multimedia contents. In addition, we analyze the performance of the proposed solution with various multimedia contents on digital signage.
Construction of Information Management System for User Customized Manufacturing Process

This paper suggests a way to construct an information management system for manufacturing process not by modifying existing solutions but by designing and developing its own solution, then examines its effects. To solve problems of existing systems, objects to be managed are organized and coded hierarchically so that a management system becomes more flexible and efficient in handling user's various needs and changes of equipments. We also provide user-customized reporting function where reporting forms are dynamically constructed depending on user's need. To validate our approach, we implement a real system and illustrate some useful examples.
The Document Clustering using Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithms

In this paper, the multi-objective genetic algorithm is proposed for the document clustering which is important in the text mining field. The most important function in the document clustering algorithm is to group the similar documents in a corpus. So far, the k-means clustering and genetic algorithms are much in progress in this field. However, the k-means clustering depends too much on the initial centroid, the genetic algorithm has the disadvantage of coming off in the local optimal value easily according to the fitness function. In this paper, the multi-objective genetic algorithm is applied to the document clustering in order to complement these disadvantages while its accuracy is analyzed and compared to the existing algorithms. In our experimental results, the multi-objective genetic algorithm introduced in this paper shows the accuracy improvement which is superior to the k-means clustering(about 20 %) and the general genetic algorithm (about 17 %) for the document clustering.
Pattern Analysis-Based Query Expansion for Enhancing Search Convenience

In the 21st century of information systems, the amount of information resources are ever increasing and the role of information searching system is becoming criticalto easily acquire required information from the web. Generally, it requires the user to have enough pre-knowledge and superior capabilities to identify keywords of information to effectively search the web. However, most of the users undertake searching of the information without holding enough pre-knowledge and spend a lot of time associating key words which are related to their required information. Furthermore, many search engines support the keywords searching system but this only provides collection of similar words, and do not provide the user with exact relational search information with the keywords. Therefore this research report proposes a method of offering expanded user relationship search keywords by analyzing user query patterns to provide the user a system, which conveniently support their searching of the information.
A Study on Precision Measurement System for Metal Plate Surface Quality Using Moving Average Image Processing Techniques

It has been highly required to develope an automatic metal surface inspection system, specifically using image processing techniques, which can replace the visual inspection method in the steel industry. In this paper, we propose a precisional surface measurement system using the moving average image processing technique. When the surface patterns which are generated in the rolling process of metal plates are recognized as defects, the proposed system can measure the actual number of defects. It has been proved that our system shows better results than the conventional FFT method.
A Directional Distance Function Approach on the Efficiency of Chinese Commercial Banks

On December 11, 2001, China joined the WTO and became one of the member countries and the Chinese financial markets had to be open in 5 years. So, the Chinese government transformed national commercial banks into joint-stock banks. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the validity of this decision by the Chinese government. In order to measure the efficiency of banks, the directional distance function (DDF) methodology is used, which analyzes whether a bad output exists in the outputs. In the empirical analysis, the number of staffs, the fixed assets, and the equity capital are used as inputs, while the loans and the non-performing loans ratio are used as a good output and a bad output, respectively. The non-performing loans ratio is included in output since it could affect the efficiency of banks. If it isn't considered in the analysis, a distortion might occur in analyzing the efficiency of banks. The results show that the efficiency of the major commercial banks was improved, and that the efficiency of joint-stocks banks was higher for 2002-2003 while the efficiency of national commercial banks was higher for 2004-2006. It was due mainly to the foreign exchanges reserve funds injected into national commercial banks by the Chinese Ministry of Finance, and as a result bad assets were eliminated.
