A Buffer Management Scheme to Maximize the Utilization of System Resources for Variable Bit Rate Video-On-Demand Servers
Kim Soon-Cheol ;
Journal of the Korea Industrial Information Systems Research, volume 9, issue 3, 2004, Pages 1~10
Video-On-Demand servers use compression techniques to reduce the storage and bandwidth requirements. The compression techniques make the bit rates of compressed video data significantly variable from frame to frame. Consequently, Video-On-Demand servers with a constant bit rate retrieval can not maximize the utilization of resources. It is possible that when variable bit rate video data is stored, accurate description of the bit rate changes could be computed a priori. In this paper, I propose a buffer management scheme called MAX for Video-On-Demand server using variable bit rate continuous media. By caching and prefetching the data, MAX buffer management scheme reduces the variation of the compressed data and increases the number of clients simultaneously served and maximizes the utilization of system resources. Results of trace-driven simulations show the effectiveness of the scheme.
Examination Questions Selection Algorithm in Web-based Engineer Test Education System
Kim Eun-Jung ;
Journal of the Korea Industrial Information Systems Research, volume 9, issue 3, 2004, Pages 11~18
It is making researches in questions selection method for examination in web-based education system. Most questions made for these remote examinations use methods of making questions using fixed questions or randomly using item pools or automatically using degree of difficulty. This paper proposes a new examination questions selection algorithm in web-based education system for engineer test. Generally, Engineer test is characterized by adequate examination questions selection for degree of difficulty and equally between all units. Therefore this algorithm selected examination questions equally well as regards degree of difficulty and distribution between all units. This algorithm providers more effective education examination method as compared with previous algorithm.
A case study on the integrated development of web programming with database using visual interdev
Woo Won-Taek ;
Journal of the Korea Industrial Information Systems Research, volume 9, issue 3, 2004, Pages 19~31
The purpose of this study is to show a case integration of web programming with database using Visual InterDev as a conceptual client and Web Server as server, Through this case study, we can see how easily dynamic web database programming used in Internet and Interanet can be developed in one integrated design environment such as Visual InterDev eliminating the inconvenience of developing database file and web page separately. Some literature survey and experimental practices were done to provide future developers with the principles and methodologies of developing web database programing using Visual InterDev with much less coding efforts and more convenient and easy way compared to other web developing tools.
Performance Analysis of a Loss Retrial BMAP/PH/N System
Kim Che-Soong ; Oh Young-Jin ;
Journal of the Korea Industrial Information Systems Research, volume 9, issue 3, 2004, Pages 32~37
This paper investigates the mathematical model of multi-server retrial queueing system with the Batch Markovian Arrival Process (BMAP), the Phase type (PH) service distribution and the finite buffer. The sufficient condition for the steady state distribution existence and the algorithm for calculating this distribution are presented. Finally, a formula to solve loss probability in the case of complete admission discipline is derived.

The goal of this research is to develop a method of identifying a topic of a given text by looking at relationship of keywords defined in an ontology hierarchy. The keywords which are extracted from important sentences of the given text are mapped onto their correspond concepts which exist in the hierarchy. After all the words are mapped, the correspond concepts will be generalized into one single concept. The single concept will most likely be the topic of text. Our research have an approach that promotes both satisfaction in term of robustness and accuracy using ontologies and word frequency. So, this attempts are done in what they call as a hybrid approach. We try to take the challenge by using knowledge-statistical base approach. Experimental results show that proposed method outperforms the existing method using knowledge-base only.

As a consequence of expansion in information technology, various services continually have been provided us through the internet in these days. Since the beginning of the mobile service, contents for its service actively have been developing now; there fore, the existing internet service system is gradually changing into the wireless mobile service system. However, mobile service now in use is mostly for entertainment such as bell sound, game and so on. The existing contents are very insufficient to satisfy the education. In this thesis, we have developed new mobile contents that are combined with Item Pool System. Students can connect to the learning contents by using the mobile device in anywhere and anytime in order to promote the efficiency of study.
Development of Customer Oriented Intelligent Shopping Mall System

Journal of the Korea Industrial Information Systems Research, volume 9, issue 3, 2004, Pages 55~63
Most of current shooing malls on the internet do not satisfy all customers because they present arrangements of goods and suggestions uniformly and comprehensively according to the thinking of their managers. When classifying into groups according to generations, gender, income, job, hobby, etc. the propensity of purchase is showed differently and the interest and real purchasing power of the customer is different in shopping malls. This paper describes the development of customer oriented intelligent shopping mall system that is added not only statistical analysis dynamical activity of customers but also weight and construct optimal according to group of goods automatically.
Transfer Dictionary for A Token Based Transfer Driven Korean-Japanese Machine Translation
Yang Seungweon ;
Journal of the Korea Industrial Information Systems Research, volume 9, issue 3, 2004, Pages 64~70
Korean and Japanese have same structure of sentences because they belong to same family of languages. So, The transfer driven machine translation is most efficient to translate each other. This paper introduce a method which creates a transfer dictionary for Token Based Transfer Driven Koran-Japanese Machine Translation(TB-TDMT). If the transfer dictionaries are created well, we get rid of useless effort for traditional parsing by performing shallow parsing. The semi-parser makes the dependency tree which has minimum information needed output generating module. We constructed the transfer dictionaries by using the corpus obtained from ETRI spoken language database. Our system was tested with 900 utterances which are collected from travel planning domain. The success-ratio of our system is
on restricted testing environment and
on unrestricted testing environment.
Sensibility Evaluation for Car Navigation System based on Vehicle-type Preference
Park Sung Joon ; Kim Sung Hoon ;
Journal of the Korea Industrial Information Systems Research, volume 9, issue 3, 2004, Pages 71~79
Owing to the rapid increase of the number of automobiles, the traffic is being heavily crippled as time goes by. To provide drivers with better safety and convenience, a variety of CNSs(Car Navigation System) are being installed more and more specially for the vehicles which are produced in recent days. As the CNS has gained the public popularity, it has been playing a role as a component of the multimedia system in a vehicle in addition to providing the capability of route guidance service. It is, therefore, now recognized as an important unit of the vehicle interior system. As the situation has been changed as formerly described, it is necessary that not only the functions but also the usability and exterior features are to be designed to suit customers' tastes. This paper is an attempt to find out what the major sensibility factors which customers want as far as a CNS is concerned are. Because these factors can differ from a vehicle type to another that customers prefer, the analysis is based on the vehicle preference. It is proved that MDS(Multi Dimensional Scaling) is an effective method to analyze the sensibility factors for the different types of vehicles. The result shows that for the people who prefer the sedan-type vehicles, luxuriousness, harmoniousness, and texture are major factors. For people who like sports car, faminism, salience, and dynamics are major factors. For people who prefer SUV's(Sports Utility Vehicle) or MPV's(Multi Purpose Vehicle), solidity, dynamics, and convenience are important.
