An Empirical Analysis on Member Fisheries Cooperatives' Self-efforts for Managerial Improvement
Ryu, Deock-Hyun ; Yang, Keun-Won ;
The Journal of Fisheries Business Administration, volume 41, issue 2, 2010, Pages 1~23
This study is to evaluate member fisheries cooperatives' self-effort for managerial improvement qualitatively and quantitatively. The impaired member cooperatives' got grant from National Federations of Fisheries Cooperatives for managerial improvement for 2003~2004 with establishment of MOU. This MOU describes a self-effort of memebr cooperatives' required fulfillment items for managerial improvement. From the various level of analyses, we conclude that per capita total return or ROA has direct and positive effect on the improvement of net capital ratio or profit ratio. However, other MOU items like human resource management or an investment increment did not have a correlation with it. In addition, an aggregate financial indicator, such as ROA, seems to have a positive effect on the improvement of net capital ratio or profit ratio for the group of well restructured member cooperatives, but does not for the bad performance group. This is because the good performance has leads to the improvement of net capital ratio for the well-restructured member cooperatives since there is little chance to have additional weakness. From this study we can check the proper selection of MOU items should be based on the analysis of its effect on the managerial improvement.
Some Schemes for the sustainable Development of Korean Laver Industry
Ock, Young-Soo ;
The Journal of Fisheries Business Administration, volume 41, issue 2, 2010, Pages 25~44
The laver has been cultivated long time ago in Korea. And traditional production system was changed to new system about 30 years ago. The new production system is understood the specialization of laver products, that is, originally individual fishery households made final laver products from raw cultured laver in sea working to dry working in land, but the new system was separated raw laver production in sea and dry laver production, which made final dry laver products by purchase the raw laver in land. This change has been increased laver production, 10 billion sheets in 2000's from 5 billion sheets in 1980's. And rapid production increase gave rise to some troubles on laver industry that is a serious drop in real laver prices, discord structure between raw laver producer and dry laver producer, stagnation of laver consumption, etc. Now Korea is the best laver production country together with Japan in world. Then we have to consider some schemes for the sustainable development of laver industry. One of such schemes is export enlargement of laver against world. The consumption of laver has been globally increased in recent. The other is the grading test problem of dry laver. Because the rapid increase of laver production caused to drop laver quality. Then we seriously have to consider the grading test of dry laver for high level quality production.
Estimating Populations, Yields, and Expenditures of Recreational Fishing in Korea
Lee, Hee-Chan ;
The Journal of Fisheries Business Administration, volume 41, issue 2, 2010, Pages 45~60
The objective of this article was to estimate the market size of recreational fishing in Korea. Data were collected through sample surveys of 3,081 households nationwide in 2008. The number of anglers was directly estimated by applying weights expressed as the ratio of population to the sample. Yields and expenditures were estimated based on modules developed. On the basis of the results, a total of 6,524 thousand anglers caught an estimated 643,343 thousand fish, divided 65.2% on inland lake and 34.8% on saltwater. An angler caught about 98 fish on average in 2008. A typical angler went fishing 9.6 times, divided 8.4 times on inland lake and 5.5 times on sea. An annual expenditure of 5,233.6 billion won was estimated. The total was divided 2,851.4 billion won on inland lake(54.5%) and 2,382.2billion won on saltwater(45.5%). An average angler spent 802 thousand won a year. This study also estimated volumes by various types of fish.
A Study on Korean fisheries' Globalization level: focusing on LIT and IIT
Hong, Hyun-Pyo ; Ma, Chang-Mo ;
The Journal of Fisheries Business Administration, volume 41, issue 2, 2010, Pages 61~79
The objective of this study is to examine Korean fisheries' globalization level. For that, this paper discusses structural changes of world fisheries and level of korean fisheries' globalization. Fisheries' globalization is measured by comparison of IIT(intra-industry trade) and LIT(level of international trade) on eleven countries(Netherland, UK., USA, France, Japan, Spain, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Philipinnes). And analysis data are obtained from UN-UNCTAD PC-TAS and FAO Fishstat. As a result of measure of fisheries' globalization, Netherland is the most globalization country of eleven countries. And the next order is Spain, UK, France, Thailand, Taiwan etc. We can classify these countries into four types. Type I is 'International linkage and integration global indutstry' inculding Netherland, UK, Spain, France. Type II is 'Interantional integration global industry' including Taiwan and S. korea. Type III is 'international linkage global industry' including none of eleven countries. Finally, type IV is 'domestic demand and self-sufficient industry'including Thailand, USA, Japan. So we can name the type of korean fisheries' globalization as 'interantional integration global industry'. Usually this type is evaluated that level of international trade is not high but level of intra-industry trade is high. As a result, from now, we should consider policy directions of korean fisheries whether to decide one of four types or not.
A Study on Information Exploration Characteristic and Relative Importance Evaluation of Island Tourism Web Site
Lee, Dong-Ho ;
The Journal of Fisheries Business Administration, volume 41, issue 2, 2010, Pages 81~106
This study examines the information exploration characteristic and relative importance evaluation of island tourism web site. The survey items are developed based on the related studies and also implemented particular way so-called 'semi-online' that including both web based material and offline tutorial. The first objective of this study is verifying the characteristics of information exploration on island tourism of university students. The second is examining the peculiar properties of tourism information that exposed one's individual importance evaluation. The result of this study shows that most of the students have no difficulty in using the internet and exploring the island tourism information. And there is no significant difference in using and exploring the internet between male and female students. Based on the result of this study, most popular type of island tourism information is picture type. Personal blog or user created contents(UCC) that containing the other's experience of island tourism is mostly wanted contents. But there is a significant difference in importance of contents within the students. The community based information which including UCC, blog, and other community user's posting is evaluated the most important information for relatively less experienced students. On the other hand more experienced students have a preference on expertise information which created by tourism experts. The difference within the determinant factors that affecting island tourism also significant. With analysis of variance(ANOVA) on determinant factors, the tourism activity and social/culture resource are less important than others(eg. natural environment, accommodation and so on). The result of this study would be practically used for implementing the local government's effective tourism web site and enhancing the current island tourism operation. And also it gives a advantage to facilitate the island tourism for young generations.
A Dynamic Price Formation System and Its Welfare Analysis in Quantity Space: An Application to Korean Fish Markets
Park, Hoan-Jae ;
The Journal of Fisheries Business Administration, volume 41, issue 2, 2010, Pages 107~133
As policy makers are often concerned about dynamic effects of demand behavior and its welfare analysis by quantity changes, the paper shows how dynamic price formation systems can be built up to analyze the effect of policy options to the markets dynamically. The paper develops dynamic model of price formation for fish from the intertemporal optimization of the consumer choice problem. While the resulting model has a similar form of the error correction types of dynamic price formation system, it provides the rational demand behavior contrary to the myopic behavior of error correction demand models. The paper also develops appropriate tools of dynamic welfare analysis in quantity space using only short-run demand estimates both theoretically and empirically as a first attempt in the literature of price formation and fisheries. The empirical results of Korean fish markets show that the dynamic model and the welfare measures are reasonably plausible. The methodology and theory of this research can be applied and extended to the commodity aggregation, dynamic demand estimation, and dynamic welfare effects of regulation in the similar framework. Thus, it is hoped that this will enhance its applications to the demand-side economics.
A Study on the Effect of Fisheries Damage Factors on Fisheries Price
Kim, Ki-Soo ;
The Journal of Fisheries Business Administration, volume 41, issue 2, 2010, Pages 135~151
Conventional studies concerning about economic evaluation of fisheries damages caused by public undertakings have focused on showing the causality between marin environmental variation and fisheries production. But almost all of them have ignored the effect of fisheries damages factors on fisheries price. The study tries to suggest a model how to examine the existence and measurement of the effect of fisheries damage factors on fisheries price using statistical approach, in other words, the estimation of the statistical coincidence between two different population means. The paper tries to give a good application of the model using the case of fisheries damages caused by oil leakage pollution which happened three years ago in the coast of Taean province.
An Establishing of Fisheries Management Consulting System : focused on the case study of similar organizations
Hwang, Jin-Wook ;
The Journal of Fisheries Business Administration, volume 41, issue 2, 2010, Pages 153~174
This study is aimed to analyze the establishing of fisheries management consulting system by case study of similar organizations. For a gradual extension of new technology of fisheries, National Fisheries Research and Development Institute(NFRDI) has launched fisheries consulting project including management in 2010. Fisheries management consulting needs practical and theoretical background regarding its standardization of process, systematization. To achieve this, fisheries management consulting system has to follow farm management consulting system by means of benchmarking. In order to analyze farm management consulting system, I investigated its role organizations(MIFAFF, RDA, KFRI), farm consulting guide. And also, it was conducted to investigated establishing of fisheries management consulting system through development of standard management consulting table and consulting indicators. The research results showed that the realm of fisheries management consulting should be redefined and systematized apposite to the case of fisheries actual conditions. In recent years, to enhance improvement of the fisheries income, there is need to be focused on the efficient utilization of fisheries management consulting system. It is expected that fisheries management consulting system be main issue in fisheries industry.
