A Evaluation and Planning Method of Ecological Sustainability of Residential Development Based on the Concept of Environmental Carrying Capacity

A sustainable evaluation and planning method shall have an integrative methodology for analysis of interrelationship among environmental resource uses and natural conditions during the planning process. However, there are few methods for understanding or achieving sustainable planning in residential development projects for most planner/architects. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to investigate theories of the concept of environmental carrying capacity based on the ecological view, to propose a sustainable planning method for evaluation and planning of environmental sustainability in residential development projects, to analyze interrelationship of selected environmental resources to represent an environmental carrying capacity for a residential development project based on the proposed sustainable planning method. Finally, through the case studies of a high-density housing project located near Seoul Metropolitan area, the existing case and a sustainable case were analysed by the proposed method.
A Study on the Techniques and a Tool of Children-Participatory Design for Renovating Community Child Center

The purpose of this study is to understand children's participating behavior on the environment-improving process of a community child center, and to develop participating technique and tools that can be appliable. For this, a workshop, constructions, and an evaluation research were done on the premise that children participate in process of designing a community child center. The result of study is as follows. (1) A survey chart, questionaries, preference image chart, and attitude measurement chart used in this study were easy to understand, simple, and thus found to be a useful technique and tool that could make children participate more active and interested. (2) As children participated more on the environment-improving process of community child centers, their demands became more diverse and specific, and their levels of satisfaction were high. (3) The change of satisfaction level before construction and after, and consistent demands for the separation of studying space between upper and lower graders show that children understand their physical environment changes well, and have clear ideas on how their studying space should be composed.
Assessment of the Daylighting Performance in Residential Building Units of South Korea through RADIANCE simulation

This paper focused on the daylighting performance of residential high-rise buildings in South-Korea. the purpose of this study is to estimate the visual environment of sunlight coming into opening according to sky conditions, orientation of windows and each space of Apartment buildings. Season of the year, weather, and time of day combine with predictable movement patterns of the sun to create highly variable and dynamic daylighting conditions. Daylighting design is usually based on the dominant sky condition and the micro-climate for the building site. There are three common sky conditions: clear sky, overcast sky, and partly cloudy sky. The clear sky includes sunshine and is intense and brighter at the horizon than at the zenith, except in the area around the sun. Daylight received within a building is directly dependent upon the sun's position and the atmospheric conditions. Easily used charts, diagrams, and software programs allow study of solar geometry for any geographic location and time of day. on the other hand, the overcast sky is characterized by diffuse and variable levels of light and has dense cloud cover over 90% of the sky. This paper was calculated by a Desktop Radiance program. The space dimensions were based on a unit module of real constructed apartment having divided into five sections such as living room, room1, room2, room3 and kitchen.
A Study on the Structural Safety of Photovoltaic System Mounted on Balcony Railing

This study aims to evaluate the structural safety of the balcony photovoltaic systems easily installed or moved on the buildings. Also, the systems are controlled by solar altitudes focused on its mobility rather than high efficiency generation performance thereof. The results of the study are as follows. Two types of typical photovoltaic systems which can be mounted on the balcony are proposed, and, the sizes of the systems are designed to be adjusted within certain ranges of the frames in order to attach the various rail sizes. To evaluate the structural safety of the proposed systems, several simulation evaluations are performed on the safety evaluation standards by the Ministry of Construction-Transportation and KCI 2007. The results are that the proposed plans are reasonable in terms of stress and deflection in the structural aspects at the wind pressures of
of external wall surface under the condition of wind velocity higher than 25(m/s).
Sky Ratio Diagram for the Evaluation of Daylight Environment at the Children's Playground

The children's playgrounds have been installed almost from the beginning when the first apartment complex was built. The brightness of a playground has not been considered in the architectural plan. The site of the playground has been chosen based on availability without making a detailed review on its daylight environment. The purpose of this study is to provide the Sky Ratio Diagram for the evaluation of daylight environment at the children's playground in apartment complexes. the Sky Ratio Diagram has 100 points, each point has a value of equal to the sky ratio 1%. Through case studies, the Sky Ratio Diagram was verified whether it could be practically applied to the actual playgrounds. This research is meaningful in that it suggests a way to quantitatively evaluate the brightness of a playground. The Sky Ratio Diagram suggested in this study can be practically used when choosing a site for a playground within an apartment complex.
A Study of improvement on Special School for the Mentally Disabled - Focused on Special Schools in Gwnagju -

In recent years, the growing needs and the interest of the welfare for the disabled people has ignited the educational facilities for the disabled in Korea. This special schools are to be provide the disabled people with proper facilities to provide opportunities to participate in social life and to maximize the educational efficiency. However many special schools are not properly designed to educate the disabled because their design guidelines including legal planning standards. It is also true that these standards are not specifically categorized and specialized according to the kinds of disability. This study, therefore aims to suggest measures of the special school design guidelines especially for the mentally disabled people. The study first looks after the characteristics of the mental disability and the current situations of special schools in Gwangju. It, then examines the behavilr of the mentally disabled students in some of special schools in Gwnagju through observation and interview. The interview has done with the staff in the facilities regarding the usage patterns and behavioral characteristics of the mentally disabled students especially in convenience facilities in schools.
A Study on the Daylighting Transmittance Efficacies of Skylights by Calculating the Effective Transmittance of Light Well

Daylight is one of the most critical factors that can be utilized for architectural spaces; compared to artificial light, it is a sustainable energy source without the cost of electric energy and offers a more natural feeling to the visitors in the building. To make the space quality better, many architects have tried to predict daylight performance during the design process. The aim of this study is to evaluate the daylight transmittance efficacies of the five shapes - Flat, Pyramid, Dome, Barrel Vault. Ridge - of skylights. The results of this study indicated that the differences of transmittance efficiency among various skylights were less than 4.6% except the flat shaped skylight. Therefore, this study shows that there were no big differences of the daylight transmittance efficacies among the shapes of skylights.
Implementation and Evaluation of Green Building Features: Case Study of Trees Atlanta Kendeda Center

In the United States, the implementation of the LEED green building rating system has dramatically changed the construction industry to motivate construction participants to employ green building approaches into projects. The objectives of green building rating systems are to achieve the triple bottom line benefits including economic, social and environmental benefits that are able to not only provide an excellent amenity to building users, but also to reduce environmental problems associated with buildings and accomplish financial benefits. Since the implementation of green building features has many benefits, the purpose of this study is to identify occupants' satisfaction of green building and the transformation of occupants'' attitude toward sustainability by conduct an in-depth case study of the cutting-edge green building project located in Atlanta, GA, USA. Based on this case study, it is possible to suggest construction participants in Korea to identify how green building can improve occupants'' satisfaction of the building and change their attitude toward sustainability.
A Study on the thermal comfort change according to the Planting Type in housing complex

The rapid urbanization caused drastic temperature changes in Korea. Excessive urbanization and development result in unpredictable and abnormal climate change all over the world. These changes are reflected in Korean government policy and research about cities, such that various research endeavors have been undergone recently. There are lots of ways to improve the urban environment; the easiest way to solve the urban heat effect problem is to make green spaces within the city. Even though we can't enlarge green spaces over the city limitlessly, it is desperately need for a methodology to efficiently create green space in limited area. Based on awareness of issues as mentioned earlier, we would like to propose landscaping method that can increase thermal comfort in the same area. For this study, simulating the change of temperature, mean radiant temperature, PMV were done due to number of species planted in apartment complex. To increase the reliability of the simulation, first above all, field measurement for temperature change was performed in apartment complex, where residential building are arranged in the form of ㄷ. And based on this data, Envi-met simulation was performed varying 1-7 kinds of species divided by grass, shrubs, arbor (deciduous, conifers) planted in apartment complex. As a result, there was a change less than
with the increasing number of species in daytime, but the average radiation temperature about
was reduced. In addition, PMV index was improved by more than 0.5 point. Thermal comfort indicator improved significantly depending on the number of species during the day, on the other hand, there were no significant changes at night. As a consequence, this study has shown that not single-species planting but mixed planting varied the number of species would improve the thermal comfort in the same area of landscaping space at daytime.
A Study on Building Energy Consumption Pattern Analysis Using Data Mining

Data mining is to discover problems in the large amounts of data. Also, data mining trying to find the cause of the problem and the structure. Building energy consumption patterns, the amount of data is infinite. Also, the patterns have a lot of direct and indirect effects. Discussion is needed about the correlation. This work looking for the cause of energy consumption. As a result, energy management can find out the issue. Building energy analysis utilizing data mining techniques to predict energy consumption. And the results are as follows: 1) Using data mining technique, We classified complicated data to several patterns and gained meaningful informations from them. 2) Using cluster analysis, We classified building energy consumption data of residents and analyzed characters of patterns.
A Study on the Evaluation of Carbon Neutral Housing Development through SBTool

Recently, many countries are tightening a variety of policies and controls with great efforts to reduce emission of GHGs(Greenhouse Gases) as concern for climate change heightens. The purpose of the study is to provide guidelines for planning and evaluate element and evaluate housing development. The elements are also assorted into 6 sections and 30 planning elements were drawn from them. It is drawn to 6 sections, 27 categories, 31 evaluation elements except cultural and perceptual aspects unrelated to planning elements from these elements. Case analysis has shown that most of planning elements were applied because these cases obtained environment-friendly certification in the country. Followings are the common characteristics. Firstly, it showed that application of planning element in all cases is excellent. Secondly, the case with excellent application of elements related with energy and application degree obtained excellent degree i environment-friendly certification in the country. Finally, application of planning elements related with renewable energy was in poor condition in all cases. With the utilization of SBTool, the evaluation results about planning elements of housing complex of Carbon emissions-reduction type showed that CASE-A obtained 11.17 points and CASE-B obtained 9.24 points. In the case of renewable energy section, it was confirmed that the evaluation doesn't work well. As a result, changes of planning elements affect environment-friendly extent. It was confirmed that accessibility to housing complex of Carbon emissions-reduction type could change. The Study on Index of Greeness in Streets of Seoul by Using Automatic Measurement Techniques

In this study, we measured the Index of Greeness(I.O.G) and analyzed factors that affect in downtown street of Seoul. The aim of this article is to provide an ways of improving I.O.G, with an emphasis on accuracy of measurement. We utilized the autimatic measurment techniques proposed by Tonosaki to solve the problem of accuracy in measurement. The result is as follows : Firstly, the average I.O.G of Gwanghwamun Plaza is 15.76%, Jongno is 11.48% and Dasanro(from Yaksu station to Beotigogae station) is 6.36%. According to the comprehensive analysis in three reseach areas, it shows that I.O.G is intimately linked with planting method, species of trees and the presence of wall planting. Secondly, it was analyzed that grass and ground-cover planting promote I.O.G better than other method. The I.O.G of photo which contains grass is 45.47%. According to the comparative analysis between tree planting and multi-planting method, the presence of lower planting showed a difference about 8.77% of I.O.G.. From the persipective of I.O.G, tree planting with two lines is more effective than one. The difference of two ways is about 3.24%. Thirdly, it is an efficint way to use the wall planting or vertical planting in order to promote I.O.G.. In Dasanro, The I.O.G of photo which contains wall planting or vertical planting is 45.47% in contrast to the average of I.O.G. is 6.36%. Fourthly, the difference of I.O.G between broadleaf tree and needleleaf tree was larger than we thought. If look closely confined to this study, the I.O.G of street planted by Pine is 3.61% and Eastern Sycamore Family Bottonwood is 12.55%.
Determinants of Choosing to Live in Silver Town for Supply of Dwelling Environments of Elder

This Study analyzed about various factors affecting preference of Silver Town. Especially, the Study shows how Individual peculiarities and the realization of decrepit Service and facilities have on preference of Silver Town. According to analysis, the site location, Economics and Safety have a positive effect on the preference of the Silver Town. On the other hand, Investment, pleasant environment and convenience have nothing to do with the preference of the Silver Town. Also, the Study shows that if someone realizes that medical service is the most important thing in the essential service, they prefer the Silver Town. If someone realizes that asset management service is the most important thing in the essential service, they don't prefer the Silver Town.
Comparing Performances of Factors for Reducing Energy at Deteriorated Elementary School Buildings

Faced with the international issue of environmental problems from global warming and energy consumption, the Korean Government has made many efforts on reducing energy and
emission under the motto of "Low-Carbon Green Growth". In order to reduce energy in the building sector, severe design standards and regulations on saving energy in new buildings have been established. Now, it is necessary to focus on deteriorated buildings where applications of energy saving designs and techniques have been insufficient, for maximizing energy saving in the building sector. Specially, it is very important to reduce energy through the remodeling process at deteriorated school buildings which were built over 20 years ago and sharply changed into the excessive energy consumption structure from new educational curricula. Thus, this paper examined the effects of potential factors to reduce energy at deteriorated elementary school buildings using the energy simulation on the Visual DOE 4.0 program. Among applied factors of insulations, southern louver, window's SHGC, indoor setup temperature, and system efficiency, all factors except window's SHGC turned out contribute to reduce energy at the deteriorated elementary school buildings, compared with the baseline energy performance.
Consequential Change of Wind Environment in Building Arrangements

The purpose of this study is to investigate the change of wind environment for different building arrangement. In this study, we analyze outdoor wind environment on different building arrangement that take same floor area ratio using the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) method. We do not consider the effect of temperature. Building arrangements of low density, different hight and a lot of green area will change the effect of wind environment. The eight different arrangements of buildings are studied in this paper. In these calculations, we know the different arrangement of buildings change outdoor wind environments. Especially, reducing the number of building and crossing the different height of buildings have a good kind of wind environment at the same floor ratio. We know that these arrangement of buildings to reduce the heat island phenomena on city plan.
A Research of Bottom Ash as a Lihgtweight Vegetation Block to Take Advantage of the Mixing Ratio

With the development of the industry, such as homes and industries of electric energy usage and thereby increase the supply of electrical energy for power generation facilities were also increased. Among them an increase in thermal power plants, such as Bottom Ash was accompanied by an increase in industrial waste. If fly ash is recycled, some ten thousand Fly Ash and Bottom Ash Landfill, the recycling rate is low in most. In this study, in order to resolve the problem of fly ash recycling Bottom Ash to take advantage of low physical and chemical characteristics were analyzed. Evaluation of Physical Properties of Bottom Ash In addition, through the evaluation of functional properties of additives chogyeol condensation of 1 hour or more, within 3 hours of closing, Flow has more than 190mm of wheel load resistance value is less than 3mm flooring developed to study the subsequent emphasis on the Properties is based. Through these studies by developing a functional flooring help with the problem of resource depletion, and losses due to reclamation and pollution is to prevent.
