Centennial Planning by Local Residents for Sustainable "Mun-Dang" Village

As a result of the rapid industrialization in Korea, dismantlement of traditional rural villages and sharp decreases in rural populations have been common phenomena in rural areas in Korea. Recently, some rural villages have made efforts to revitalize their villages particularly with emphasis on the sustainable development of the village. Mundang village is one of the good examples of rural village revitalization. Residents of the village established centennial plan for the sustainable village with the help of the experts. The paper introduces the summary of the planning process and plan itself.
A Study on Integration of Pre-manufactured Window Systems with Conventional Building Design Elements

Importation of mass production of building elements with standardization are vital way for environment-friendly architectural planning, which it makes the lifespan of a building longer than normal with easier maintenance and remodeling. The advantage might be magnified here in Korea since typical types of apartment house are dominated in our construction market. For the purpose, a series of pre-manufactured window systems is one of the optimal elements to be prototype building modules. In the design process of the system windows, lots of consideration should be involved and they include aesthetics, thermal performance, noise reduction, airtightness, and so forth. A real survey on the ready-made window systems has been performed and its optical issue related to luminous peculiarity is what is of major interest in this study. In addition, technical review on more advanced window products and their adaptable potential for the integration with fundamental architectural design elements were carried out.
A Study on the Energy System for Ecological Architecture

The purpose of this study is to suggest an environmentally friendly energy system of ecological architecture, with the reference to foreign cases, judge feasibility of it. The ecological architecture is very similar to the natural ecosystem. There is growing international scientific consensus that human activities are having a discernible effect on the global climate. Therefore, with a precise understanding of the concept of ecological approach and concrete perception of the necessity it, an establishment of planning which recognizes the ecological architecture as a organism a same time, ensures diversity, stability and cycling stemmed from the ecosystem to various activities through a ecological structure shall bring the introduction of substantial ecological architecture into domestic realm. As a result, in this Age of industrial science, We are proposing useful materials and suggestion regarding the ecological architecture planning of korean cities, by preestimating the characteristics of a city heading toward the Age of the new ecological environment.
A Study on Light Guide Luminaire Design using Prismatic Film

There are a number of practical uses for devices which are capable of piping large amounts of light: illumination of areas where there would be maintenance, safety, or security problems with electronic light sources; piping sunlight into indoor areas for illumination; and the conversion of high luminous efficacy, good color quality, high intensity discharge lamps into more acceptable linear of area sources of light. Prism light guides are hollow structures which pipe light by means of total internal reflectin(TIR). These devices are unique in their ability to combine the efficiency of TIR with the relatively low cost of hollow structure. An important application stems from their ability to transform a point source of light such as an incandescent or discharge lamp into a linear or area source of light or illumination. We report the development of an economical, flexible prismatic film for fabricating the light guide wall. This guide geometries and films are currently under development.
Daylighting of Underground Parking Lots in Apartment Housings by Field Survey and Performance Evaluation

Recently, underground spaces can be usually applied to the alternative of land use for parking. However, lack of window and natural light are among the most cited drawbacks associated with dark image of underground. If underground parking lots are designed to be positive and safe environment for people, openings for daylighting will play a significant role. The natural light and unobstructed view to outdoor are main elements to create optimal underground parking lots. This paper focuses on investigating the actual day lighting conditions and evaluating the day lighting performance of openings as potential lighting resources. For the study, the field measurements and Questionnaire surveys are conducted. And then, the day lighting performance of underground parking lots based on opening geometry and orientation are evaluated by scaled model experiments. As results, the feelings of safety and orientation of underground parking lots are improved by openings for day lighting regardless of the sizes. The required illuminances (daylight factor 0.5%) for underground parking lots can be satisfied in the skylight opening ratio of 4% or more.
A Study on the Soil Architecture

In the last century, mainly our cultures destroyed a lot of ourselves as well as of our natural environment by deterioration, pollution and exploitation. Building activities are for a third responsible for these disasters and they are fully the reason for the growing Sick Building Syndrome. In result, Materials of the building should be derived as much as possible from nature, and walls should be made of yellow soil, or of bricks made from yellow soil The adobe can easily have larger or smaller dimensions, and different thickness as weil, according to the purpose for which they are meant, and the structural load-bearing function they have to fulfill. In spite of the importance of clay, research or experiment of clay has been quite weak. However, in stead of endowing the clay with the value as natural architectural material, we want to evaluate it as an important element of the environment.
