A Study on the Concept of Sustainable Housing Design

The main purpose of this dissertation is to develop an integrated approach to sustainable housing development, which would be applied in both academic studios and professional practice. This approach is based upon the concept of sustainability encountered in the process of housing design efficiency. It is concerned with the basic identification of problems and needs, the setting of design goals, and the constraints under which the future design and construction will have to operate. The components of the research approach focus on: (1) the identification of main issues of sustainable architecture (2) the identification of the concept of sustainability as integrated approach for architectural design. (3) the analysis of context between the housing design and the main issues of sustainablility. (4) the identification of the concept of sustainable housing design. Based on these results, this paper suggested the concept of sustainable housing design as integrated approach.
A Study on the Environment-friendly Assessment Elements for Apartment Unit Plan

The purpose of this study is to suggest environment-friendly assessment elements for the apartment unit plan. For this, the organizing environments of a unit are classified through literature review. Those were five categories of environment: environment of solar system, light, water, green and indoor air Quality. Then, the assessment elements for each categorized environment to evaluate the environment-friendly performance were grasped definitely by examining the applicability of architectural methods or equipment technology. It is expected to suggest not only an assessment tool for evaluation but also a checklist for design in order to develope environment-friendly apartment unit plans.
A Study on Designing a Proper External Shading Device to Diminish the Cooling Load of a Transparent Glazing Office Building

Modem architecture represent a great capitalistic, polishing, high-technology image to the public by design. As a result, glass architecture which show 'transmittance' in desinging play a leading part, consequently a role of machine is increasing in controlling an internal environment of building. These movement look like assisting an universal standard building disregarding a each nation's climate peculiarity, if glass building is applied by a proper external shading device. the shading device has a great effect on the reduction of cooling load energy, this research to propose the proper designing scheme of the fixed external shading device. The effect of proper external shading device on the cooling load is evaluated by the numeric simulation.
A Study on Planning Aspects & Detaild Techniques of the Eco-school

The fields of green building and ecological design have much to offer to those who are seeking to improve the ecological impact of schools and school grounds. These well established disciplines are particularly useful to existing schools considering renovations to make them more energy, water, and resource efficient as well as healthier places to work and play, Green building and ecological design principles and techniques are also very effective, of course, if incorporated into the design for brand new school buildings. The major concept of the Eco-school plan is to understand that the school consists of an ecosystem, so the design concept should focus on minimising impact but at the same time maintaining close contact with the environment. T his is becoming the basic concept in applying the Eco-school design to the new 21st century school building. This thesis is an analysis on the methods of application, based on careful examination of case-studies from the U.S.A about detailed plan element and design method, through the following six aspects ; (1) site use plan, (2) green plan, (3) water system plan, (4) materials and recycling of resources, (5) energy use plan, (6) indoor environment plan.
A Study on the Site analysis of Jongmyo area -With Feng-shui theory and Geomagnetic Field

East Asian explain the changes of substance happened on earth and those of human life with the conceptual frame of "Gi-ki"(地氣; earth vital energy) and organize them by the system of "Feng-shui(風水) theory. The core of Feng-shui theory is reading the expression of the nature and feeling the Gi-ki from the expression. One of the properties of the earth is that the earth has a magnetic field associated with it- the Geomagnetic field. The geomagnetic field is produced by a combination of the effects of electric currents in the earth's liquid core, the magnetization of crustal rocks, external electric current systems that surround the earth and currents induced in the outer layers of the earth by magnetic field variations. The sameness of logic between Feng-shui and geopathic zones is that both are concerned with the discrimination of site and the energy of places, in other words both disciplines are concerned with how the environment can influence people. In this context the operation of Gj-ki can be related with the effect caused by geomagnetic field on site. In this study Jongmyo(宗廟), one of the representative traditional architecture in Korea is selected because the site selection and building layout follows Feng-shui faithfully according to Taejo silok (太祖實錄, Annals of King Taejo). Observing the landforms surrounding Jongmyo, Jongmyo is apparently located in auspicious places named Gumge Poranhyoeng(金鷄抱卵形, a Feng-shui landscape of golden hen sitting on eggs). The geomagnetic investigation of Jongmyo shows that the geomagnetic values of Toekan(the space near Hyeol) are relatively high and uniform and those of Sangweoldae and Haweoldae are decreased in accordance with the distance. The result shows that there is possibility that Feng-shui has scientific basis related with geomagnetic field. Feng-shui theory can suggest a direction for designing the sustainable building for living with nature.
A Study on Design Method of Water Space in Ecological Park -focused on the ecological park in Seoul-

The quality of urban environment where large population reside is becoming more vitally important than ever. Recently the city of Seoul has launched a 'green city' program converting number of city owned lots into urban parks. In this study, we first investigate four recently opened city parks with water ponds in Seoul. This study then classify these parks according to their respective designs, particularly addressing design and environmental impacts by water features. From these exercises, we derive the following interim findings: 1. Design patterns of waterscape is changing. 2. Water in the city park is a major design feature. 3. Design methodology for city parks must be studied further.
An Analysis for Recognizing the priority of Indoor Environmental Factors in office Remodeling

Nowadays the importance of Building Remodeling as a means to create an architectural environment capable of responding to the social, economic changes has increased more than before. After long time pass, the aged building have faced the need for the overall repair of the structure and function. Remodeling is much more saving the time and cost than new construction in the office building. This study was focused in functional and efficient evaluation. Based on these points, we developed the evaluation factors, and verified a validity of evaluation factors through a survey. The purpose of this study was focused on the Analysis for Recognizing the priority of Indoor Environmental Factors in office Remodeling. This study provides us the competitive guidance of remodeling. The owners and tenants take the maximum efficiency with the minimum cost.
Evaluation of Environmental Performance of Energy Systems employing Market Allocation Model in Building Sector in Korea

In this study, the evaluation of environmental performance of the building energy system of domestic commercial sector was carried out. Based on the theory of linear programming model, we established an evaluation model satisfying object functions and constraint conditions. Employing the model, the evaluation of building energy system was performed under the consideration of cost and environmental constraint conditions. As an evaluation tool, MARKAL (MARKet Allocation) known as a market distribution model was employed. We analyzed scenarios of Case I (Base Scenarios) through Case IX established by the combination of the components of building energy system such as glazing, building skin, core, and heat source system. According to the results of the evaluation, highest contribution on the useful energy demand was obtained from the building energy system combined with solar heat source system, when the total amounts of
exhaust as an environmental constraint condition is assumed to be the level of 1995.
