Visual Performance Evaluation of Daylighting System with Sloped Lightshelves

This study assessed the visual performance of luminous environment by the lightshelf. The subject survey method was used and results are presented and analyzed. The lightshelf daylighting system was developed by LAEL at KH University and was applied on the window of a mock-up office. The questionnaire for assessing visual performance contains 9 questions with 7 grade bipolar scales. The experiment was conducted during the bright part of the day from noon to one thirty on June 7, 2006. The questionnaire for assessing visual performance contains 9 questions with 7 grade bipolar scales. During the experiment was carrying out, the work plane illuminance and luminous distribution at surrounding the windows was measured. The semantic differential rating data of experiment were analyzed by t-test and factor analysis using SPSS 12.0 statistics package. The visual performance of the lightshelf was more positive. The factors affecting the visual performance are task performance and visual comfort. The subjects were more comfortable in a room installed with lightshelves on both the task performance and the visual comfort aspect. Therefore, the application of sloped lightshelf daylighting system improves visual performance of luminous environment.
A Study on the Chemical Properties and Strength Development of Regional Hwangto

In this research, Conducting an engineering properties experiment, this study examined basic properties of regional Hwangto. The results of experiments are as followings. 1) This study confirmed that a result of examining lime order for Hwangto and comparison of stimulants, this study confirmed that 28 day's strength promotion is found in case of calcium hydroxide(Ca(OH)2) and calcium chloride(CaCl2) stimulant. Finally, it is known the fact that lime highly improves the weak strength of Hwangtoh. 2) As XRD analysis for proving the strength manifestation principle of Hwangto by regions, CSH figure and CASH figure appeared in each regional Hwangto in all the strength areas. This result could be appeared through hydraulicity from reaction of alkali stimulant and water, and pozzolan reaction(CSH figure) and
reaction(CASH figure) by silica (SiO2) ingredient and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) among ingredients of clay, and alumina(Al2O3). 3) In result of strength analysis, It is knowned that the Gyeongsangdo Hwangto is stronger than the Jeollado Hwangto in reactivity.
Assumption and Climate-Map Drawing of Ultra Violet Rays Influencing to the Deterioration of Building Exterior Materials

Recently, building requirements have been saturated and residents are demanding a variety of building exterior materials faced with roofs, walls, windows and doors. On the other hand, when building exterior materials are exposed with ultra violet rays during some periods, these will be influenced deterioration effects like discolorations, exfoliations and cracks and will be needed exchange of materials. In this study, main 17-provinces of Korea were collated climate data and counted the computation results with an assumption formula for calculating ultra violet rays amounts. Lastly, ultra violet rays map of Korea was made by the counted data and was considered tendencies. Accordingly, in the phase of design the designer can select the appropriate exterior materials which have durabilities and resistances of ultra violet rays. So hereafter this study can be a foundation study to sustain building exterior materials with ultra violet rays damages. Below is the summary of Korean ultra violet rays tendency. 1. A Study on the Indicators for evaluating Environmental Sustainability of Building - Focused on evaluating indicators for utilizing natural energy -

The purpose of this study is to develop the sustainability indicators for assessing environmental sustainability of building. This reseach focused on evaluating indicators for passive design in the stage of site planning and building massing. In order to achieve the aims of this study, first priority was given to set up systematic framework of sustainability indicators for passive design. Based on the framework, the assessment categories and indicators by each category were established. Secondly, the weighted value of each indicators were obtained by questionnaire survey of the experts. As the result of the analysis of questionnaire of experts, feasible indicators were obtained and the grades of measured values were deduced. Finally, this paper presented comprehensive environmental sustainability indicators which is related to the passive design.
Overshadowing Analysis of Apartment Building Arrangement with a Average Shading Ratio

This study is to investigate the possibility of a quantitative analysis on sunshine right in apartment houses with a new evaluation index of shading area ratio(SAR) which represents seasonal average value of shaded portion of a window during definite period. SAR values of each apartment houses in a prototype building was calculated depending on apartment building arrangement types and orientations. Since the new method proposed in this research is able to measure the sunshine possibility of the each house in detail, which is more precise and descriptive than the existing method of sunshine judgment standard based on the sunshine hours only at winter solstice, it can be appropriately utilized as a highly qualified sunshine right judgment measures in apartment buildings.
Experimental Study on Natural Ventilation Performance of Double Facade System in Heating Period

A Double Facade System(DFS) is well known as an innovative solution of ecological facade in the west european countries. There are more than 200 various realized DFS in Germany. At the same time, the korean engineers have researched to find out the physical advantages of DFS in the moderate korean climate, which has a very humid summer with high temperature and a dry winter with low temperature. For example, the monthly mean temperature in Korea comes up to 28K, while that in Germany comes up to only 19K. That is, why a other solution of DFS is needed in Korea. This study has experimented the physical performance of the natural ventilation in the heating period. The preheating function of the cold air by DFS can improve no doubt the performance of the natural ventilation at the cold season as well as spring and autumn. The physical difference between single and double facade on natural ventilation has been tested at the newly constructed laboratory, which can turn
to confirm the characteristic of a facade with the various directions. The results show the natural ventilation of the DFS has definitely much more comfortable than that of the single facade system. The air velocity of the inflow as well as the air temperature in the DFS provide a more stable condition than in the SFS. The theoretical limit(air velocity max 0.2m/s, air temperature min.
, temperature difference between 100mm and 1700mm height max. 3K) on the indoor comfortableness doesn't go over in the DFS. On the other hand, the SFS showed an unstable condition with an excess of comfortableness limit on air velocity as well as temperature. In view of the researching results so far achieved, the research came to a conclusion, that the DFS can provide a more comfortable indoor condition by the preheating in the heating period than a SFS, and the period of natural ventilation in winter time could be definitely increased at the DFS.
Determination of Ratios of Natural Ingredients for Loess(Hwangtoh) as Environmental-Friendly materials

With people's awareness of environment-friendly buildings recently increasing, there is a need to develop environment-friendly construction materials to reduce indoorair pollution levels. Thus, efforts to develop loess finishing materials that can replace the finishing materials currently being used (e.g., gypsum boards and chemical products) are underway. An analysis of the characteristics of domestic loess products,however, revealed that the cracks on loess products can be lessened and their strength can be improved by adding chemical ingredients to them. Thus, this research sought to use 100% natural materials and to develop loess finishing materials. In the experiments that were conducted in this study, appropriate mixture ratios of loess and sand/silica sand were found, and cracks and contraction ratio changes in samples were analyzed by differentiating the ratios of natural ingredients, such as lime, fine jute threads, gypsum, and jute cuttings. Loess'particle size distribution was found to have a high correlation with loess decoration, and it was discovered that the mixture of lime and fine chute threads could improve the contraction ratio. Through this study, which made use of natural ingredients, environment-friendly construction materials that can exercise the original function of loess were developed.

Comparative Daylighting Performance of an Interior with Lightshelves and Conventional Glazing; A Mock-Up Experiment

As sustainable design technologies, advanced daylighting systems with lightshelves have been developed and are currently under monitoring the daylighting performance. This study aims to evaluate the comparative daylighting performance of sloped lightshelf and conventional glazing window with mock-up model, reconstructed as a prototype of Korean office building, sized
) for the south facing side-window was installed on the rooftop of engineering building, Kyung Hee University in Korea. It has an identical configuration of reference room and the test room. For the test room, the sloped type lightshelf system was designed as 10mm transparency sheet glass, tilt angle degree
, and total sized 1.28m (interior length 0.88m, exterior length 0.49m). It consisted of daylighting collector, entrance glazing and reflector. To assess daylighting performance, the totally 37 measuring points for illuminance and 2 view points of luminance were monitored in every 30 minutes from 12:00 to 15:00. For the detailed analysis, photometric sensors of each room were installed at work-plane (8 points), wall (7 points), ceiling (3points), and exterior horizontal illuminance (1 point). Luminance of window, rare of the room was measured under clear sky. It is to be monitored by Agilent data logger, photometric sensor Li-cor and the Radiant Imaging ProMetric 1400. Comparisons with a light factor, increase-decrease ratio, uniformity, and luminance are discussed.
