Study on Application of Shaft Box type Balcony for Improvement of Ventilation Performance in Apartment

Recently, because of the continuous rise of international oil price, energy saving is strongly demanding. So, Ecological technics of architecture such as use of natural energy have been actively explored in the field of building. In the method of utilizing natural energy, the key point is to saving energy effectively as not lowering the comfort of indoor environment, various systems investigated. Many papers about double skin facade system have been reported, it is announced broadly that the system is very effective in improvement of natural ventilation and indoor thermal environment, and also protecting outdoor sound. The shaft box facade is a special form of box window construction. It consists of a system of box windows with continuous vertical shafts that extend over a number of stories to create a stack effect. The facade layout consists of an alternation of box windows and vertical shaft segments. This research investigated the natural ventilation performance of shaft box type balcony which conform the shaft box type double skin to the exiting balcony construction. First, analyzed various types of exiting apartments, proto-type was decided. By using virtual environment Program, modeling the proto-type, compared the contribution of air temperature and the effect of outdoor air cooling. by this research, we confirmed that shaft box type balcony had many possibility for improvement of indoor environment.
Tendency Analysis of Indoor Natural Ventilation by PST(Particle Streak Tracking) System

Ventilation of buildings provide occupants with comfort and plays a very informant role in supplying indoor ventilation requirement. Also, natural ventilation is more comfortable than forced ventilation taking account of mental comfort. Especially factors, airflow velocity and direction etc., should be reflected in establishment of comfortable indoor environment because indoor airflow can directly affect comfort of occupants. However, a device which enables indoor air movement to be analyzed has not existed until now. Hence, it has mostly depended on simulation results of fluid analysis but the results often differ far from reality. PST(Particle-Streak-Tracking) System, an alternative to improve this problem, is currently applied to natural ventilation in building, air conditioning, and airflow analysis in the inside of a plane etc. This study closely examine the property and strength and weakness of PST that is first introduced into KICT and then evaluate applicable possibility.
An Experimental Study of Performance Improvement of Air Type PV/T Collector Units

The integration of PV modules into building facades or roof could raise their temperature that results in the reduction of PV system's electrical power generation. Hot air can be extracted from the space between PV modules and building envelope, and used for heating in buildings. The extraction of hot air from the space will enhance the performance of BIPV systems. The solar collector utilizing these two aspects is called PV/T(photovoltaic/thermal) solar collector. This paper compares the experimental performance of two different types of air type PV/T collector units: the base case of a collector unit with 10cm gap for forced ventilation and the other unit with copper pin attached to PV module to enhance its thermal performance. The experimental results shows that the base case unit had the overall efficiency of 41.9% and the improved unit with copper pin attached to PV module had 50.1% efficiency. For these air type PV/T units, the forced ventilation of the air space improved the electrical performance as well as the thermal performance.
Evaluation of Typical Solar Radiation Data by the TRY Methodology

Limited fossil fuels and unstable energy supply are considered as one of the critical problems in architecture requiring large amounts of energy. In order to this challenge, environment-friendly architecture design is required. Clear data should be prepared to apply solar energy to architecture aggressively and properly. This study used FS statistical analysis data regarding average daily solar radiation of Seoul observed over 20 years to find out standard year and standard daily solar radiation. This study also aims to compare and evaluate an appropriate method of selecting a standard year which is too close to measurement value through comparison and analysis with daily solar radiation acquired by applying overseas researchers' suggesting weight factor. As a result, the data nearest to measurement value of daily solar radiation was UK CIBSE TRY(TYPE 2) displaying 0.100in t-statistic index. For UK CIBSE TRY(TYPE 2), weight factor was applied to three climatic elements except relative humidity. TYPE 1 and TYPE 3 recorded 0.343 and 0.367, respectively, showing higher record of t-statistic than TYPE 2. TYPE 1 was calculated through FS statistical value of single data about daily solar radiation with other climatic elements excluded. For TYPE 3, relative humidity was added to TYPE 2. In particular, since TYPE 2 was closer to the measurement value compared to the others, it is necessary to consider relationship with other climate elements if other climate elements are added.
Luminance Characteristics on the Facade of Shopping Complexes - Focused on Dongdaemun Area in Seoul -

Recently, rapid development of technique and change of lifestyle during nighttime has activated the urban outdoor lighting and renovated consideration of nightscape. As the interest of nightscape increases more widely, outdoor lighting has been installed more and more in the cities. Nightscape comes in diverse forms. So, there is no absolute standard for outdoor lighting. But only bright outdoor lighting is not necessarily a good nightscape. Installation lighting without master plan or excessive outdoor lighting may cause a inharmony. This study aims to analyze the luminous characteristics of facade in shopping complexes. For the purpose, four large-scale shopping complexes located in Dongdaemun area were selected. Building facade composition, outdoor lighting composition, and lighting equipment of each shopping complexes are surveyed, and luminance of building facade were measured with Prometric 1400. The result of the study are as follows; (1) Horizontally large-scale shopping complexes emphasize the building entrance and shape of the building at night by outdoor lighting. (2) Non cut-off luminaries installed in building entrance and shop front caused the potential of light pollution.
A Comparative Study on Discomfort Glare Sensation in Entire Visual Field for Position Index

Discomfort glare is an important factor influencing appraisal for lighting environment. Unified Glare Rating (UGR) which has been proposed by CIE is one of the formula for evaluating discomfort glare. Position index is an important factor in the UGR formula. Position index was proposed by Guth in 1949. It has been used until present limiting upper visual field. Lower visual field has different sensation of brightness in comparing with upper visual field. Therefore, it is necessary to propose position index about lower visual field. The objective of this study is to investigate the brightness sensation in upper and lower visual field. First, the visual field was measured on the self-made Glare Tester. Second, luminance of the Borderline between Comfort and Discomfort (BCD) was measured on the glare Tester. Circular sources of brightness were located at various angular distances from the line of vision along five meridians,

A Study on the eco-friendly design curriculum in the interior design education - Focus on the curriculum of 4year Universities -

The concern and recognition of the energy, environment, conservation of natural resources of the world today are raising, and sustainable development can't be considered in a way of separating development from environment any more. For sustainable development, a new educational infrastructure construction and paradigm coping with new environment through the whole education are needed. Accordingly, this research analyzed eco-friendly design curriculum among interior design major of 4year universities to help with reestablishing educational goal as a model for eco-friendly design curriculum development. According to this research, environment related subject were 91, the rate of 16.4% among total 1492 interior designs major, and among them, eco-friendly design related subjects were 15, which is the 6.4% of 91 environment related subjects, and which is 1.0% among total interior designs, through which we could see that eco-friendly design related subjects were very light weight in the total interior designs. So, the reasonable and concrete reform of eco-friendly design related subjects in 4year universities interior design curriculum seems to be urgent, and diverse eco-friendly design related subjects needed to be developed and established.
A Study on Culture-Led Urban Regeneration based on historical context and cultural infrastructure

The idea that city culture can be employed as a driver for urban development has become part of the new orthodoxy by which cities seek to enhance their competitive position. Such development reflect not only the rise to prominence of the cultural sphere in the city development, but also how the meaning of culture has been refined to include new uses in order to meet the main objectives of sustainable development. This study focuses on the procedure how the cultural infrastructure and historical context can be applied for urban regeneration strategy. Two successful cases (Bilbao, Spain and Yokohama, Japan) were selected for analysis of strategies as a whole, background, main characteristics of culture-led urban regeneration strategies and their effect for urban regeneration have been analyzed in detail. In conclusion, lessons for the future development were suggested in terms of resources, planning and linking strategies.
A Study on the Usage and plan of Indoor Community Facilities in Apartment Complex

The economic growth of the modern society brought economic expansion of the national income. It is to increase the demand that faced with community or convenience facilities helping living of the residents, but the community facilities in the apartment helping living of residents do not adapt resident living conditions or demands. This study analyzes as follows the use present situation of the community facilities supplied with an apartment plan and building plans. The objective of the study is to understand a problem of an installation standard of community facililities throughout research. The study way was based on literature review, a field study and an interview with manager in the apartments. We are as follows telling the conclusion of this research. The builder must plan the facilities which the resident requests from the plan stage to the conclusion. We must consider the operation method according to the facilities. The facilities must be planed to make the contentment of the resident with the usage.
A Basic Study for the Planning of Casino Resort Facilities -Focused on the Analysis of Casino Resort Facilities in Las Vegas-

The improvement of the life standard of the public by the economical growth leads their interests to the leisure activities, so that the demand for resort facilities has been increased. Especially, casino resort facilities in Kangwon-Do has been developed continuously without exact concept of casino resort design. This resort facilities has been planned by indiscreet imitation of foreign examples and non-organized developments and etc. One of the reasons for these problems may be from the lack of the knowledges and researches related to the architectural approaching of these facilities. The purpose of this study is to provide the basic informations for better understanding and improvement of planning and design direction for these facilities through a survey the famous casino resort facilities in Las Vegas. As a result of this research, Las Vegas has been changed tremendously from the casino resort to the resort complex for families with special theme and various facilities.
Mobile Crane Ground-Fixing System

A mobile crane has been more frequently used to deal with the increased capital-intensive projects in line with the economic growth, but the operation is still heavily dependent on personal experience in the past, resulting in severe overturn accidents that cause the loss of lives and damage to the properties. A crane shall be installed in a systematic manner that proved to be safe in engineering aspect, and should the installation and operation be blindly dependent on experience alone, it would apparently cause a great risk. Particularly the mobile crane, among others, frequently causes a severe overturn accident due to poor ground-fixing device. The study therefore focused on fixing system of mobile crane and the outcome is highly expected to make a great commitment to selecting the optimal type of crane for the project as well as to securing the safety during construction.
A Comparative Analysis on the Characteristics of Rammed Earth Form System based on Selection Criteria

This research examines the characteristics of the "rammed earth form" based on the criteria for the selection of forms. For this purpose, the paper first reviews the characteristics and orientation of the earth-construction and looks into the outline, the prerequisite, the current status and the tendency of the rammed earth form system through previous studies. Consequently, we aims to contribute to the criteria for the selection of rammed earth forms in the future through a comparative analysis of the construction cost, quality, safety and easiness of works between the veneer board form and the euroform, which are most widely used at earth housing project in the domestic country. The results reveals that the euroform is better than the veneer board with 21% of total cost in the cost analysis. But this better than that in the side of easiness of construction. In both cases, the buckling of wall panel form and the labor-oriented characteristics of the methods are the future research issues in the rammed earth form system.
Tower Crane Foundation Design and Stability Review Model

Tower crane is a large construction equipment which is extremely tall for its section when it is erected, with its high slenderness ratio, and it has a heavy load by itself due to large lifting stuff to handle. In line with the construction projects in these days which increasingly tend to become higher, larger and complex, the stuff and height subject to lifting are also getting larger and higher, which has also increased the risk of disastrous accidents. A stable foundation design thus to deal with the increasing self load becomes more important. When a typhoon Maemi swept the nation in 2003, as many as 43 tower cranes fell down or collapsed, causing a severe damage to the people and the properties. Considering such fatal damages, a technical evaluation of the stability to prevent the safety accident with the tower crane must be very crucial. Tower cranes operation in domestic construction sites, in fact, have been simply dependent on personal experience and intuition of the engineers. Particularly when it comes to the foundation design, it mostly depends on manufacturer's recommendation. The study hence was intended to develop the fundamental measures for granting the objective stability, instead of following the individual's experience only. The simulation model recommended in the study is expected to make a good commitment to achieving an effective lifting work as well as preventing the safety accident.
Environmental Friendly Construction Process of Composite Beam and its Application

Recently hybrid beam system is widely used because it has many structural advantages such as short construction period and low story height etc. Generally steel wide flange beam exposure type and embedded type hybrid beams are constructed. Even though exposure hybrid beam is easily constructed, the fire proofing protection process is necessary because steel wide flange beam cannot resist to fire itself. Story height reduction type hybrid beam, which is introduced hybrid beam in this paper, does not need fire proofing protection process because it is constructed as a fully embedded type hybrid beam. Developed construction process and actual construction cases of story height reduction type hybrid beam were introduced in this study.
Environmental Friendly Connection of Composite Beams and Columns

The composite beam adopted in the study was designed to reduce the floor height as well as to embed the top flange of steel frame into the slab that will enable to avoid applying the fire-resistant coating and to unify the joint method with a steel frame-type. As the steel frame and bottom concrete of the beam is pre-fabricated at the factory it could reduce the overall schedule at the jobsite. Applying such composite beam system to the work is expected to provide the efficient and enhanced performance, given the current tendency of the building construction that tends to be getting higher, larger and dense. The study focused on combining the composite beam with various column systems in a bid to propose the details thereof. A desirable composite girder can be adopted depending on site conditions through the evaluation of various beam and jointing approaches. Among the column systems applied to the study are steel column, SRC column, RC-PC column and RC column. The ways of combining with the columns addressed in the study were categorized into the rigid joint, pin joint, steel frame joint and bracket type joint. Besides, the instruction for site fabrication of beam-column was added in an effort to help set up the site fabrication procedures.
Nonlinear finite element analysis of Concrete Filled Carbon Tube Columns Using Plasticity Theory

In the field of composite structures, the use of carbon tube for the confinement of concrete has been arisen since 1990's. However, experimental and analytical studies were limited to those of reinforced concrete and concrete filled steel tube. The carbon tube provides excellent confinement capabilities for concrete cores, enhancing compressive strength and ductility of concrete significantly. The carbon tube has high tensile strength, light weight, corrosion immunity and high fatigue strength properties. Since carbon fiber is an anisotropic material, carbon tube could be optimized by adjusting the fiber orientation, thickness and the number of different layers. In this study, both experimental and analytical studies of axial and lateral behavior of full-scale CFCT (Concrete Filled Carbon Tube) columns subjected to monotonic axial load were carried out using Drucker-Prager theory. And, based on comparison results between experiment results and analytical results, k factor estimation was proposed for effective analysis.
A Study on Types and Problems of Defect lawsuit on Apartment Buildings

Recently, the cases of lawsuit are growing on residential defects. Though, mostly residential construction companies are trying to mitigate resident's dissatisfaction due to keep the company's brand image by operating customer service team, some representatives of apartment buildings initiate litigations without any negotiation with countrepartner companys incited by planned suit lawyers. But lawsuit takes longtime to sentence(about more than one year), and judged amount of money are very few (averaging about 14%) compared with asserted amount of it. To suggest the improving alternatives, the types and problems of defect lawsuit on apartment complex are analyzed.
