Cultivation System of Green Design and Construction in the USA
Lee, Ah-Young ;
KIEAE Journal, volume 8, issue 3, 2008, Pages 3~11
As arising concerns on environment, the social and institutional efforts have been made to establish green building in Korea. Even though the progress until now could not be underestimated, the education and information system of green architecture needs to be reconsidered. The system and the program of USGBC to cultivate green design and construction in the USA could be a good case to be explored. The results of exploration of USGBC programs are followed. First, USGBC is industry-led and consensus driven coalition and has diverse membership including building owners, architects, engineers, general contractors, government agencies and nonprofits. Second, various education programs are developed and provided not only for building industry practitioners but also for general people. Third, LEED Accredited Professionals who have detailed knowledge of LEED project certification requirements and processes are produced to make rating system go on smoothly and spread out. Forth, there are international conference and expo called "Greenbuild" and chapter events to interchange of information on green building industry. Lastly, there are incentives which are earning continuing education credits for other organizations such as AIA for attending a LEED workshop and earning a project one point towards LEED Certification. In view of above results, USGBC and its education program can be a good reference for developing ours on green building in Korea.

Kim, Ja Kyung ;
KIEAE Journal, volume 8, issue 3, 2008, Pages 27~36
Urban architecture density is getting higher, and this trend is expected to continue in the future. Therefore, skyscrapers are being brought into relief as future alternative architecture beyond symbolic meaning in the aspect of demand and supply of urban space. However, skyscrapers which were newly built have many problems such as consumption of enormous amounts of energy, destruction of natural environment, and traffic jam. For this reason, environment-friendly skyscrapers based on the concept such as Green Building and Green Skyscraper started to be built around the world. However, plans or evaluation standards, which take account of the environment-friendly aspect of skyscrapers, leave much to be desired. And especially it is hard to find environment-friendly skyscrapers. Therefore, this study aims to establish the concept of environment-friendly skyscrapers that has not properly been defined, and to find realistic planning methods and practical alternatives through the analysis of the works that have brilliant ideas about environment-friendly architectural method. From the perspective of architectural planning, we did case analysis focused on site planning, form planning, elevation and floor planning, and tried to give useful ideas for high-rise architectural planning in Korea by finding practical solution focused on the active use of natural energy, saving resources, the reduction of wastes, natural architectural environment design and natural friendly system from the view of environment-friendly technological analysis.

KIEAE Journal, volume 8, issue 3, 2008, Pages 61~68
The development of urbanization in the twentieth century according to the rampant growth of industrialization not only brought about the improvement of life-quality but also induced us to reconsider the contemporary issues such as crisis of echo system which made us aware of the values and significance of the system and sustainable environments. As sustainability has been recognized as the holistic concept, it has been highlighted as one of the core concepts in the studies with the present ecological perspective. Particularly, as the plan of urbanization in Korea which had been based on the deconstruction has been converted into the regeneration, economic and cultural regeneration is also demanded for the future plan besides material regeneration. This study aims to scrutinize various attributes of socially sustainable designs in Yerba Buena Garden of San Francisco, USA which has been globally well known as a successful example of urban regeneration. By way of visit-and-observation of the place, the research for the study was conducted during the month of December, 2007. Three researchers visited Yerba Buena Garden to observe and take photographs and to obtain relevant data and public documents in local public library. Socially sustainable design was measured on the basis of such principles; social facilitation, permeability and accessibility, safely and emotional stability, softness and feminism, and child care convenience. Relevant data were systematically organized to support and prove the above principles. The result of the study is expected to effectively be utilized for Korean environment plan and design as a benchmarking guidelines against the crisis of degeneration and the aging society with the lowest birthrates in the world.
An Experimental Study on the Strength and Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Columns Containing Shells Substituted a Fine Aggregate
Koo, Hae-Shik ;
KIEAE Journal, volume 8, issue 3, 2008, Pages 69~76
This is an experimental study on the maximum load value and structural behavior of reinforced concrete columns containing shells as a substitute fine aggregate of concrete, through making reinforced concrete test columns with shells. In this study, the main factors consist of the grain sizes and the percentage of substitution of shells to fine aggregate in two kinds of water cement ratio. The results of the study showed as followed. The maximum load value decreased with increased the rate of substitution about shells and as the grain size of shells became smaller, the load values of them were somewhat changed higher but it is important that we must consider absorption rate of shells sufficiently. If we have a proper water cement ratio in column productions containing the shells, we can meet the requirement of the percentage of substitution until 30%. The deflection and deformation properties of reinforced concrete columns with shells represented typical curves like that of normal reinforced concrete. But as the failture types, they are able to make some change without being out of the fundamental graph forms. After the analyzing structural behaviors and the properties of reinforced concrete test columns containing shells, the most excellent grain size of shells represented 3.0mm and less with taking uniformly, and the percentage of practicable substitution of them to fine aggregate was about 30%.

The effective mixture of structural laminated timber and other materials is expected to extend the potentials of building structures because of the potentials to realize high performance in structural safety. The classical joint types using drift pin and bolts are occurred local failures due to the small bearing area. In result, new joints using H shaped steel were suggested in this research. The objective of this study is to evaluate elasto-plastic behaviors by strengthening types of wood frames with new joints connecting structural laminated timber with H shaped steel. A total of five specimens of about one-second scale were tested. Specimens had columns with 1,050 height and
section, and a beams with 1,950mm length and
section. Also, the specimens were stiffened by brace, hwang-toh brick, and autoclaved lightweight concrete. The results of the test showed that the specimen stiffened with autoclaved lightweight concrete was characterized by fairly good strength and stiffness than those of the other specimens. Initial stiffness of H-2.0D-NS specimen with 2 times inserting length of beam height showed 1.33 times than that of H-1.5D-NS specimen. However, the strength of H-2.0D-NS specimen has not improved too much than H-1.5D-NS specimen.
