KIEAE Journal, volume 9, issue 2, 2009, Pages 65~71
Results from tests for what mixing rate of soil and sand is proper for the rammed earth and for how much additives are optimum are as under. 1) In the test to evaluate what mixing rate of soil and sand is desirable, peptizing property and surface sticking rate are found similar in its degree, but compression strength is found most stable when the ratio of soil and sand mixing shows 30:70 which indicates the best mixing rate of soil and sand. 2) In a test to add hydrated lime, compression strength, peptizing property, and surface sticking rate are found best when the mixing rate of soil and sand shows 23:7. 3) In a test to add sea weeds, the peptizing property goes down at 75% of sea weeds input a little bit more than at 100%, but compression strength shows best at 75% which is thought to be the best rate. 4) In a drop test, more soil powder mixed, the sticking strength gets better and more sands are contained, the sticking strength gets far worse to be scattered in powder type. 5) As concluding all results mentioned in the above item, the most desirable mixing rate of soil, sand, and hydrated lime is found to be 23:7:70 for the rammed earth where compression strength, peptizing property, and surface sticking rate are best.
Modern Characteristics of Victor Horta's Domestic Architecture
Hwangbo, A.B. ;
KIEAE Journal, volume 9, issue 2, 2009, Pages 73~80
In the early twentieth century, many architects still practised eclectic design elements. Emergence of new building materials such as steel, concrete and glass were not yet found fresh roles in architectural design. It was Brussels that the use of modern materials gave rise to their new forms and gave influence to not only building skins but also spatial organization. Art Nouveau architecture is often seen as revolutionary and pioneering modern architecture against eclectic classicism prevalent in the 18th and 19th centuries. Despite the fact that some scholars point out that Art Nouveau is more a transient phenomenon than modern architecture proper, no one would deny that Art Nouveau carries a good deal of modern characteristics. This paper intends to show rather ambivalent perspectives upon Art Nouveau architecture. Although it insinuates overly dynamic nature in architectural languages, it does not hamper us from reading Art Nouveau as a vital component of modern architecture. Through a careful analysis of the early domestic designs of Victor Horta, it becomes evident that his work can provide modern architecture a meaningful alibi for its growth. Victor Horta's house design is well known to the public, both for his classical tastes and for its changing implementation. Horta's modern quality is never adequately recognized, partly due to his eye catching modern iron properties and sinuous ornamentation. This paper tries to offer an insight into the complicated stage set of the fin-de-
through the work of Victor Horta whose influence has been immense in the making of modern architecture.

KIEAE Journal, volume 9, issue 2, 2009, Pages 99~106
The noise in apartment buildings are major factor that determine the quality of indoor noise environment. Particularly, the noise from children's running footsteps and plumbing noise have caused the residents who live in decrepit apartment houses to uncomfortable environment. And as time go by, sound performance are getting worse according to the aging of the facilities. So this study deals with the plans to improve the sound performance of decrepit apartment house. To compare the noise reduction, we measured the heavy-weight impact sound level and plumbing noise level before and after changes the measurement conditions. As the results of measurements, the heavy-weight impact sound level were decreased when stiffness reinforcement were installed on slab. Especially the sound level were decreased 2.1-7.6dB in 50-80Hz of low frequency range. Instead of PVC pipe system, cast iron pipe and triple elbow drain pipe systems were installed. Noise level were decreased 15dB(A) in 250Hz. Noise level of pipe system's on the slab is less than under slab one. On the contrary water saving stool showed increasing the noise level.
