Factors Influencing Resilient Modulus of Asphalt-Aggregate Mixtures

In this research, to measure the air void content within a specimen, two methods of air void content measurement were used: ASTM D 2726 and WWP procedures. The resilient modulus testing fixture developed by MTS Systems Corp. in accordance with ASTM D 4123 was used with the MTS closed-loop servohydraulic system. This paper presents laboratory test results demonstrating the effects of asphalt type. asphalt content air void content, and temperature on the resilient modulus of asphalt-aggregate mixtures. The test results were analyzed using statistical analysis and graphical comparison of data. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests were performed to investigate the effects of the test variables. The effects of asphalt type, air void content, and temperature on the resilient modulus were significant, whereas the effect of asphalt content on the resilient modulus was insignificant.
Compatibility Study of Recycled Aggregate as Subbase and Base Layer in Application of Road Construction

The main purpose of this study is to verify that the recycled aggregate obtained from the recycled concrete may be used in the road construction as crushed aggregate. The gradings of recycled aggregate are influenced by the type of crushers and their properties are dependant upon the original aggregate of concrete. The properties of recycled aggregate are reached to the values in accordance with specification for the subbase layer of the road construction. However, for the base layer of road construction, the mixture of recycled aggregate and crushed aggregate is more acceptable than the use of recycled aggregate alone.
Land Cover Classification using NDVI in Korean Peninsula

Recently, Satellite data is widely applied in many fields. Vegetation monitoring is one of the most representative applications using the satellite remote sensing. In this study, a method of classification of land cover is introduced based on vegetation condition obtained from satellite data. NOAA/AVHRR data is useful for large area vegetation monitoring, and NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) is utilized to grasp quantity and activity of the vegetation. Because each classified category has it's own condition of vegetation, classification method is developed using the quantity and seasonal variation of vegetation. The application of this method enables to classify the land cover in the Korean peninsula, and to get information of the land cover for North Korea area. This method will be useful for rough classification of land cover in a very large area.
An Experimental Study on the Silica Fume Shotcrete

Recently, tunnels are increasingly constructed in this country with the increased construction of highways, high-speed railways and subways. Shotcreting is one of the major processes in the tunnel construction. Many problems, however, exist in the current shotcreting practice. The purpose of the present study is, therefore, to explore the troubles in the current shotcreting practice, and to develop high-quality silica fume shotcrete. Optimum mixes with high quality and economy were derived and the silica fume shotcrete developed in the present study showed much lower rebound rate. The main advantages of silica fume shotcretes were also explored. The present study provides a firm base in our country to apply high-quality shotcretes such as silica fume.
The Evaluation for the Applicability of Infinite Element in Tunnel Stability Analysis

Many field problems in underground excavation occur in regions whose geometrical dimensions are very small compared with those of the surrounding media. In such cases, finite elements are able to model the finite region of interest fairly well, but for improving the accuracy of analysis, they need a large number of elements to model the surrounding media which extends to infinity. And in finite models, artifical boundary should be introduced to define boundary conditions, which often leads to inaccuracies in computed results. Hybrid type idealization, which models the region of interest with finite elements and surrounding infinite media with infinite elements representing elastic boundary character, is preferable to those type of problems. Two types of infinite element: ‘Mapped’ infinite elements and ‘Isoparametric’ infinite element. are formulated in this paper. And parametric studies with respect to hybrid model are performed to evaluate the applicability of formulated infinite elements and to verify that hybrid model is more effective as compared with finite element model in view of efficiency and accuracy in tunnel stability analysis.
Evaluation of the Stability of Embankment on Soft Ground by Field Monitoring and Development of the System EMMS

In order to evaluate differences between theories and actual phenomena taken place in the field, it is most appropriate to compare results collected from some instances of real failures to the results of theoretical analysis. Generally geotechnical engineers make an effort to collect data through trial embankments or instances of failures in a systematic manner around the world and also in the eastern Asia. However, in Korea, trial embankments have been constructed only to control settlement in Young-Jong Island and Kwang-Yang Bay. The status of studies associated with the mechanism of failures is insufficient. On the contrary, it is not so easy to collect data from actual failures of embankments because of social trends to pursue engineers' responsibilities of failures. A policy to permit engineers to collect data for the future utilization is desired. In the process of performing investigations regarding to the cause of embankment failures, the lackness of data from actual failures of embankment limited the extension of the investigation. A measure control system for the construction control of embankment on the soft ground, EMMS (Embankment Monitoring System) has been developed in the study. The system developed in the study is run under a MS-Windows environment. Soil characteristics of downstream area of Nakdong river was established through analyzing data collected during the construction of embankment on the soft ground in the area. Results from the analysis of field measurement using the EMMS were compared to the results of finite element analysis to prove the validity of applying existing theories associated with the stability of embankment to the domestic construction fields.
Expert System for Dynamic Compaction Method

Dynamic compaction method widely used in loose sand or waste reclamation is economical, and its working period is short. This method has a simple principle and working characteristics, but practical detail design for this method depends on expert's experience and published tamping data. Therefore, in this paper, the expert system which can give practical assistance based on expert's knowledge and experimental knowhow is developed by building the knowledge base for dynamic compaction method. This expert system produces reasonable and consistent results, and it is developed under the workstation environment using UNIX OS.
Expert System for Selection of Soil Improvement Method

In this paper, the expert system which is based on expert's knowledge and experimental know-how is developed by building the knowledge base for soil improvement methods. The purpose of this study is accomplishment of advising system which makes user to take fast and precise decisions for selection of the most optimal soil improvement method. The knowledge bases for soil improvement methods are built by using production rules and fuzzy theory. This expert system produces reasonable and consistent results. and it is developed under the workstation environment using UNIX OS.
