A Study on the Driver's Choice of Parking Location in Massive Trip Instigating Business Area -Focusing on Dongdaemoon Business Area-

The aim of study is to estimate the parking choice individual behavior in massive Trip Instigating Business Area. This study was preformed using the Stated Preference because SP experiment is of greater variation in prices and time than Revealed preference. The SP experiment has three parking alternatives each described by four attributes(parking cost, expected fine, search time, egress time) The three alternatives are 'shopping center parking lot'. 'public parking lot', 'illegal parking', and the attribute values are divided into three levels. Date from the survey were then used to estimate a multidimensional legit model (MNL) of parking choice. but estimated model was discovered violations of the IIA assumption. Therefore this study used to estimate a nested legit model for parking choice because of solving violations of the IIA assumption. After parking choice model was established, the change effect of violations of policy was able to estimate by model's coefficients and elasticities of variables.
Development of Decision-trees for Freeway Incident Duration Prediction

Incident is non-recurrent events on roadways and the major cause of traffic delay and air quality problems in urban area let alone personal safety and property loss. Time between incident occurrence and incident clearance is referred as incident duration and the duration prediction is one of the important steps of the incident management process. The real-time decisions regarding the resources needed to clear and manage the incident and the information given to travelers all depend on the knowledge of incident duration. This research aims to develope an accurate and reliable estimation technique of freeway incident duration. Data collection effort entailed visitation of incident response agencies, interviews, data aquisition from the Korea Highway Corporation and from field surveys by boarding wrecker trucks. Total of 506 freeway mainline incident data were collected and reduced to 245 incident cases for analyses. Using the database, a decision-tree for instant estimation of incident duration was developed and proposed herewith. Decision trees are convenient tools for TMC staffs to readily determine the duration of an incident in terms of its estimated average and inter-quartile range. The tree has several layers in which the duration of a specific incident is readily identifiable congruous to the level and degree of available information on an incident scene.
Factor Analysis and Safety Evaluation Model of Road Geometrical Structure using Quantification Theory

In this paper, we are carried out a surveying for road image to find road and environmental factors that drivers have felt on three-dimension combined alignments with many risk using 3D computer graphics. Be based on surveyed data, we found the effect factor of road safety using canonical discriminant and canonical correlation analysis of quantification theory II, and detected the causal relation between geometrical structure as finding a driver's recognition by geometric change by road safety model of quantification theory I in three-dimensional combined alignments. As the result, for construct safety road, we found that have to consider not only the quantitative factor as road geometrical structure, but also the qualitative factor as human factors in road design, and we think that design safety and comfort road as making a road design standard considering human factor.
Development of a Traffic Actuated Signal Controller for Safety and Efficiency

There is high speed on rural highway. But, There is lack of safety on rural highway. It needs to operate actuated control to improve efficiency and dilemma zone control to improve safety. The dilemma zone control is to clear vehicles in dilemma zone. The way to improve efficiency and safety in rural highway is to apply dilemma zone control under semi-actuated control. The dilemma zone control is started in the particular point of time that is end of phase

of delay in major intersections. In side of efficiency, the algorithm cleared about 58% of vehicle on the dilemma zone.
Analysis of Co-relationship Between Bus Passenger Demand and Related Factors

The public bus system is analogous to subway system in that it services in line with predetermined routes, but it differs from the subway system in that its routes can be adjusted in response to travel demand and residents convenience. The current bus system has been constantly experiencing changes in its service routes to satisfy special interest groups and to meet the needs of bus companies rather than being improved by the proper and logical analysis of data. this study is focused on constructing models to formulate the co-relationship between bus passenger demand and related factors in order to use as a tool for the evaluation of alternative routes. Constructed models can help us examine the changes of the number of passengers when bus routes are adjusted. Thus, these models can be used as a objective basis of the propriety analysis for the route plans of local government, the route adjustment demands from bus companies or residents.
New Pedestrian Level of Service by Trip Purpose and Walkway Function

Generally, LOS for pedestrians has been defined quantitatively by the capacity of a walkway in terms of the amount of available space (inverse of density) per pedestrian at the maximum flow conditions (Fruin, 1971; Highway Capacity Manual,2000). The amount of space per pedestrian is typically expressed by the pedestrian area module (Fruin, 1971) and is derived from the relationship between the average walking speeds of pedestrians and flow rate in relation to the width of the walkway available for walking. However, current KHCM (Korea Highway Capacity Manual, 2001) does not offer any specific analysis method for pedestrian space. In addition, pedestrian LOS (Level of Service) is evaluated to the unity criteria about all walkway, and it has problems which the criteria itself is emphasizing a physical mobility such as speed, density, flow rate and etc., The subject of this study is only walkway (sidewalk) among the pedestrian facilities. The purpose is as follws. First, to investigate pedestrian theory and current KHCM for specific problem recognition, and then to deduce the necessity of new pedestrian LOS criteria. Second, to classify walkway according to function, trip purpose, land use, peak hour and to research the characteristic particularly. Third, to determine LOS thresholds from A to F through speed-flow relationship and pedestrian flow-space relationship, and to make a comparative study by the walkway type. Finally, to analyze people psychology through a picture questionnaire survey according to LOS which is first determined by the type and then to suggest a New LOS.
Sensitivity Analysis of Critical Parameters in Genetic Algorithms for Highway Alignment Optimization

This study analyzes the effects of critical parameters when adopting genetic algorithms to optimize highway alignments. Upon emerging computer technology, there have been efforts to optimize 3-dimensional highway alignments using genetic algorithms and those were found to be successful. However, sensitivity analysis of critical parameters in genetic algorithms has not been fully examined in the preceding work. This may affect the reliability of the optimal solution. If genetic algorithms are applied properly, similar solutions should be expected at each replication, regardless of where the search process starts. Critical parameters affecting search performance include the number of genetic operators, the number of decision variables, the parameter for selective pressure and the parameter for non-uniform mutation. The undertaken sensitivity analysis shows that the developed genetic algorithms for optimizing highway alignments perform well based on how closely the solutions from different starting points converge.
Estimation of Changed Skid Resistance Loss Due to Wearing of PCC Pavement Surface

Skid resistance is the force created when a tire is prevented from rotating slides along the surface of the pavement. It is influenced by various factors and Skid resistance is decreased with applied friction between tire and road surface. Establishment of reasonable plan for pavement surface restoration is difficult since systematic method to predict the loss of skid resistance due to wearing has not been suggested. this study explored skid resistance loss due to wearing of tined PCC pavement surface and exposed aggregate concrete pavement based on field measurement and accelerated surface wearing.
Correlation Analysis between Deformation Strength and Rut Parameters of Asphalt Concretes at Different Temperature

Assessment of Design Phase VE Process and Its Impacts

The process of Value Engineering (VE) has initially adopted by the private sector in order to eliminate unnecessary costs and improve functional requirements. Since its initiation, VE implementation has been leaded by private firms in the Korean construction industry. In 1999, the public sector started actively pursing the design phase VE processes, which resulted from legislation of 'Efficiency Enhancement Plan for Public Construction Projects'. However, the industry has not been fully benefited from VE implementation due to disregard of basic principles and lack of systematic performance measurement systems. This paper includes extensive reviews of VE principles and its traditional processes in order to provide aids in preparing an optimal design phase VE process that can significantly increase the benefits of implementing VE. It also outlines important issues that need to be considered when developing a systematic VE performance measurement system by comparing domestic VE performance data with that of FHWA which is largely recognized as a leading VE implementor. Conclusions and recommendations will be served as guidelines in order to continuously improve the VE implementation process and increase its positive impacts.
Improved Construction Information Management System of 4D CAD Tool Using Common Information Management Method

A 4D CAD system for construction management represents the completed appearance of 3D objects in drawings linked with construction schedule. Because the 4D system includes schedule and drawings information, the database of 4D system consists of various information. Accordingly, the information management in 4D system is an important factor to serve user's convenience and to simplify link environment between construction schedule and drawings. This study suggests an effective information management methodology by using WBS as an information center in 4D system. The artificial link process for initial 4D data can be simplified by using a same WBS code for both schedule and drawing. The improved 4D system using WBS code as an information center in 4D CAD was developed in this study and verified by practical construction data.
Application of Construction IETM for Facility Management and Maintenance

Most of the technical manuals and specifications of construction facilities are written in paper. As a result, the information management of construction facility in the maintenance phase is inefficient and costly. As a solution to the problem, this study suggests a methodology to apply interactive electronic technical manual (IETM) that is one of the required standard elements in the construction CALS. The construction IETM is a useful tool that provides visual information including virtual reality (VR) and images related to a guideline as an integrated information system. It has a difference with other electronic document system that shows a guideline as a simple and descriptive reference. The suggested methodology is verified by scenarios that are assumed to be an actual situation for a facility maintenance and management.
A Development of Information Management Model and System for Systematic Infrastructure Maintenance Management

The increase of social concern with the infrastructure maintenance and management makes it necessary to develop various types of information systems to support the management of social infrastructure in Korea. However most of the existing systems have decreased the practical usability, not because undue values were given to develop the functions of computistical aggregation on maintenance data, but because little consideration is given to present working conditions in practice. The purpose of this study is to develop Road Maintenance Business Support System(RMBSS), an information system, which is based on information management model for infrastructure management. This research is implemented to highway infrastructure which is being executed under the Korea MOCT. Business process of Local Highway Maintenance & Construction Service(LHMCS), as a authority of highway, was analyzed for user requirements focused on the core business process. An information management model was developed based on the result of these analysis. In turn an infrastructure maintenance & management system was developed for administrative business and technical affairs. The system will provide capabilities of maintenance work such as various reports, the state of affairs, statistical data without special efforts.
A Methodology For Measuring Total Project Productivity of Road Construction Operations By Using An Equivalent Work Unit

This research study mainly focused on the development of a method for measuring total project productivity (TPP) on a road construction project. This method required the establishment of a database accommodating all actual quantities accomplished on the project and the man-hours invested to produce those quantities for the purpose of estimating TPP values. On the database, the actual quantities, recorded by different units of measure, were unified by applying a common unit, Equivalent Work Unit (EWU). A TPP value, then, was calculated as a ratio between the unified quantity and the amount of man-hours. This procedure was validated through the case studies performed on three highway construction projects. The validation results indicated that total productivity can be estimated and analyzed at the project level based upon the quantitative database established with the field data obtained from various work items.
A Study on Core Technologies and Technological Innovation Strategies for Construction Automation

The construction industry faces several challenges to increase its importance to the economic growth of the Korea's economy and competitiveness in the world construction market. These challenges include safety, productivity, quality, technology, and foreign competition issues. Construction automation is considered as one of key solutions to the challenges. In these paper, the various materials on construction automation and robotics are reviewed, the automation research patterns of foreign countries and Korea are compared, and the developed construction equipment and systems are analyzed in terms of time and cost. And, Five technology areas with core technologies, which make it possible to move toward overall automation of construction operations and toward commercialization of construction robot, are analyzed. Finally, some strategic approaches to develop the innovative construction technology are proposed and the roles of the participants in a construction automation research are defined.
The Effect Analysis of Observation Errors and Satellite Geometry to Ambiguity Validation Test of Carrier Phase-Based GNSS

In carrier phase-based GNSS(Global Navigation Satellite System) positioning, the determination of correct integer ambiguities is the key issue to get high precision positioning results. Therefore, much effort has been made to develop a vital quality control procedure, which can effectively validate the ambiguity resolution results. Such a quality control procedure has been traditionally based on a so-called F-ratio. A major shortcoming for this F-ratio is that its probability distribution is still unknown. Recently, a W-ratio test has been proposed to provide a more rigorous quality control procedure. This paper presents a series of sensitivity analysis for the two validation tests. The analysis will cover the performance analyses of both of the F and W-ratio with respect to undetected gross errors, un-modelled (reminding) systematic errors, and various specifications in the stochastic models, as well as geometry strengths relating to a variety of satellite constellation, such as GPS, GPS/pseudolites and GPS/Galileo integration.
Analysis of River Channel Morphology and Riparian Land Use Changes Using Aerial Photographs

This study is to trace the change of stream shape using the past series of aerial photographs and compare the land use changes of inland along the stream. For the Gyeoang-an national stream, aerial photographs of 1966, 1981 and 2000 were selected and ortho photographs were made with RMSE of 1.05, 0.54, 0.72 pixels, respectively. As apparent changes of the stream, the consolidated reaches of stream with levee construction were straightened and their stream width widened. Especially the stream width of inlet part of Paldang lake was widened almost twice because of the rise of water level by dam construction in 1974.
Land Cover Change Detection by Typhoon RUSA

This study is to present a method of land cover change detection by the typhoon RUSA (August 31-September 4,2002) using Landsat 7 ETM+images. For the Namdae-cheon watershed in Gangreung, two images of Sept. 29, 2000 and Nov. 22, 2002 were prepared. To identify the damaged areas, firstly, the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) of each image was computed, secondly, the NDVI values were reclassified as two categories that the negative index values including zero are the one and the positive index values are the other, thirdly the reclassified image before typhoon is subtracted from the reclassified image after typhoon to get DNDVI (Differential NDVI). A Study on a Cost-Benefit Analysis of the Efficiency of Managing Water Supply and Drainage System for Municipal Governments Using Mobile GIS Techniques

The Municipal Government manages its water supply and drainage system-both administrative and field work-in a single flow operation. This process method involves a duplication of work. Although GIS is now being used to manage municipal underground facilities, the current UIS (Urban Information System) that is used all around the country is not adequate because it cannot support outdoor field work, and this causes a duplcation of work, and this is where Mobile GIS technology can greatly improve efficiency and eliminate this duplication. In this paper, we have set out the areas in which mobile GIS technology can be adopted for the effective management of municipal governments' water supply and drainage systems. We have also constructed a water supply and drainage system using the Mobile GIS paradigm, and we have included a summarized cost-benefit analysis.
