Development of Evaluation System for Visibility of Variable Message Sign

Variable Message Sign(VMS) is one of the most popular travel information system. In this study, the evaluation categories, each category's datum value and evaluation procedure for enhancing the visibility of VMS are studied and the physical evaluation system is developed. The evaluation categories have been developed based on the analysis of previous guidelines used in Korea, Europe and the United States. The evaluation categories include luminance, luminance ratio, beam width, color, and uniformity. The physical evaluation system consists of goniometer, solar simulator, luminance meter, sensor and rack system. As a result of this study, the quantitative and effective evaluation of VMS visibility would become possible.
A Study on the Effect of On-Line Shopping on the Travel Demand

On-line shopping allows consumers to order goods via internet and receive them at homes or workplaces. Emergence of online shopping industry has brought the changes in the structure of freight industry, in the location selection pattern of industrial clusters and in the consumer's travel pattern. This trend is likely to continue, especially in Korea, as the society sees increases in women's participation in workforce, in population of the elder and in production pattern of manufacturing individually customized goods. Despite on-line shopping's heavy influence on travel demand, no study on this particular topic has been done yet, and thus the effect of on-line shopping on travel demand has not been properly reflected on policy making process. This paper suggests the transportation strategy to cope with this change based on the analysis of the effect of on-line shopping on personal travel demand.
Establish for Link Travel Time Distribution Estimation Model Using Fuzzy

Most research for until at now link travel time were research for mean link travel time calculate or estimate which uses the average of the individual vehicle. however, the link travel time distribution is divided caused by with the impact factor which is various traffic condition, signal operation condition and the road conditional etc. preceding study result for link travel time distribution characteristic showed that the patterns of going through traffic were divided up to 2 in the link travel times. therefore, it will be more accurate to divide up the link travel time into the one involving delay and the other without delay, rather than using the average link travel time in terms of assessing the traffic situation. this study is it analyzed transit hour distribution characteristic and a cause using examine to the variables which give an effect at link travel time distribute using simulation program and determinate link travel time distribute ratio estimation model. to assess the distribution of the link travel times, this research develops the regression model and the fuzzy model. the variables that have high level of correlations in both estimation models are the rest time of green ball and the delay vehicles. these variables were used to construct the methods in the estimation models. The comparison of the two estimation models-fuzzy and regression model- showed that fuzzy model out-competed the regression model in terms of reliability and applicability.
Estimating the Level-Of-Service for Walkways by Using Fuzzy Approximate Reasoning

Although walking is an important transport mode which should be promoted, realistic studies about walking is not sufficient. Especially, due to the transportation planning oriented toward automobile, there is not realistic analysis method for walking in the Highway Capacity Manual. Therefore, in this study the fuzzy approximate reasoning was employed to build a model for the analysis of walkways service level. For the input variable the noise level and brightness as well as the pedestrian flow rate were employed and the output variable was the walking satisfaction degree. The fuzzy models were constructed for daytime and nighttime separately. The forecastability analysis for the models were conducted using
, MAE and MSE. The values of them for the daytime model are 0.802, 0.729 and 0.735 respectively and the values for nighttime are 0.893, 0.878 and 0.860 respectively, so it can be said that the models explain the real situation well. As a result of this study, it can be concluded that the noise level has stronger effects to walking satisfaction then the brightness in night.
Freeway Design Capacity Estimation through the Analysis of Time Headway Distribution

This study is to develop an estimation method of freeway design capacity through the analysis of time headway distribution in continuum flow. Traffic flow-speed diagram and time headway distribution plotted from individual vehicle data shows: a) a road capacity is not deterministic but stochastic, b) time headway distribution for each vehicle speed group follows pearson type V distribution. The freeway design capacity estimation model is developed by determining a minimum time headway for capacity with stochastic method. The estimated capacity values for each design speed are lower when design speed
, and higher when design speed
in comparison with HCM(2000)'s values. In addition, The distinguish difference is that this model leads flexible application in planning level by defining the capacity as stochastic distribution. In detail, this model could prevent a disutility to add a lane for only one excess demand in a road planning level.
Issues and Roles of the Transportation Technology under the Ubiquitous Computing

As the concept of Ubiquitous Computing has become an important issue, we need to have a voice in the field of Transportation. Ubiquitous Computing means that IT network based on realization of 5 Any(Anytime, Anywhere, Anything, Anynetwork, Anydevice) is deeply penetrated into our daily life. As ITS has developed with the aid of IT and Transportation Technology together, we need to discuss u-Transportation concept with Ubiquitous Computing and Transportation Technology. According to the recent papers and studies, Transportation or Transportation Information sector is mentioned as a major application of Ubiquitous Computing. However, most of the studies are limited to the basic concept without any in-depth understanding about Transportation. This paper present the implementation of u-Transportation and the role of Transportation Technology based on recent technology trend.
Landscape Evaluation of Sidewalk Environment using Sensibility Data

On the occasion of high price oil generation, we have to promote activation policy for public transportation and hold back to use passenger car, it is very important to improve of sidewalk environment for pedestrian. Evaluation for sidewalk environment will be fixed with sensibility to feel pedestrian. So, study for sensibility about comfort etc. to feel pedestrian will be carried out. In this paper, researchers interests in engineering methods to make material considering sensibility and image of human. Therefore, we carried out recognition experiment for sidewalk environment with Kansei engineering, and made a quantitativedata of sensibility adjective that it was surveyed by semantic deferential method. After grasp factors by principal analysis, we found factor effect to design criterion and sidewalk environment preference. So, we could identify a design factor for comfort environment.
Overview and Suggestions on the Direction Guidance System on Traffic Sign in Suwon City

Recently, there are increasing needs to provide sufficient information on road signs for expanding cities and traffic networks. Improving efficiency of direction guidance information from road signs not only requires criteria for but also systematic approach to selecting place names that appear on road sings. As such, this paper looks at road direction information from existing road signs that leads to Suwon and investigates whether the current system of road sings provides efficient, systematic and continuous direction information for road users to easily reach their destination. In this paper, Suwon's city hall is set up as the final destination, which is linked from five other cities, Euiwang, Ansan, Hwaseong, Osan and Yongin. The paper attempts to find out whether there is continuity and suitable number of road signs for direction information by analyzing the road signs between these 5 cities and Suwon with respect to direction, direction advance notice and direction guidance. It is found that road users cannot easily find the needed information on their destination from the existing road signs and that continuity of selected place names that systematically appear on road signs is insufficiency. That is to say, the findings of the paper are that while it is easy for road users to find place names that are classified under land marks or the first-class selection of place names on road signs, it is difficult to obtain information from road signs on place names that are grouped under the second or third class. In addition, direction guidance on road signs is problematic, because the appearance frequency of road signs is not adequate and the continuity of road signs is not effective. Moreover, there is insufficient information on local direction guidance for immediate destinations on road signs with respect to turning left or right or going straight. Hence road signs in urban area need systematic improvement to find easily some destination.
Evaluation of Rutting Resistance of Modified Asphalt Concrete by Accelerated Pavement Testing

The objective of this study is to introduce the development of the first Korean full-scale APT(Accelerated Pavement Tester) and to compare the performances of general dense grade asphalt mixture and modified asphalt mixtures as the first running of the tester. The tests evaluated the rutting resistance for dense grade mixture and three different modified asphalt mixture under three different temperature conditions (25-30, 40,
). The results of the testing were compared with the laboratory test results. Results of the tests indicated that the all the modified asphalt sections showed higher rutting resistance than the dense grade section. Especially, the difference was more noticeable at higher temperature condition. Additionally,
is found out to be an important factor for permanent deformation prediction whereas the resilient modulus was not.
A Study on Development of University Campus by Analyzing Land-Use Behaviour

A Study on Determination of the Minimum Vertical Spring Stiffness of Track Pads Considering Running Safety

Railway noise and vibration has been recognized as major problems with the speed-up of rolling stock. As a kind of solution to these problems, the decrease of stiffness of track pad have been tried. However, in this case, overturning of rail due to lateral force should be considered because it can have effect on the safety of running train. Therefore, above two things - decrease of stiffness of track pad and overturning of rail due to lateral force - should be considered simultaneously for the appropriate determination of spring coefficient of track pad. With this viewpoint, minimum spring coefficient of track pad is estimated through the comparison between the theoretical relationship about the overturning of rail and 3-dimensional FE analysis result. Two kinds of Lateral force and wheel load are used as input loads. Extracted values from the conventional estimation formula and the Shinkansen design loads are used. It is found that the overturning of rail changes corresponding to the change of the stiffness of track pad and the ratio of lateral force to wheel load. Moreover, it is found that the analysis model can have influence on the results. Through these procedure, minimum spring coefficient of track pad is estimated.
Photorealistic Building Modelling and Visualization in 3D GIS

Despite geospatial information systems are widely used in many different fields as a powerful tool for spatial analysis and decision-making, their capabilities to handle realistic 3-D urban environment are very limited. The objective of this work is to integrate the recent developments in 3-D modeling and visualization into GIS to enhance its 3-D capabilities. To achieve a photorealistic view, building models are collected from a pair of aerial stereo images. Roof and wall textures are respectively obtained from ortho-rectified aerial image and ground photography. This study is implemented by using ArcGIS as the work platform and ArcObjects and Visual Basic as development tools. Presented in this paper are 3-D geometric modeling and its data structure, texture creation and its association with the geometric model. As the results, photorealistic views of Purdue University campus are created and rendered with ArcScene.
Determination of Absolute Coordinates of Cadastral Satellite Station using Gipsy-Oasis II

This study deals with the precise GPS data processing refer to ITRF2000 through the calculation of absolute coordinates of cadastral satellite station which were established by purpose of cadastral surveying. We used the Gipsy-Oasis II software developed Jet Propulsion Laboratory to estimate daily position of GPS stations with orbital and atmospheric parameters. Especially, we carried out ionospheric delay, tropospheric delay, data existence whether or not and quality control check of observation data during pre-processing. Investigation of Ground Remote Sensing Technique Using CCD Camera

Recently, in the case of observing the global environment, satellite remote sensing technology has been important. It's because satellite remote sensing is valuable for assessing relatively large areas. But now, small scale remote sensing techniques are needed which can be applicable to the detail investigation of plant tree areas which afforest land after the large scale construction of roads, dams and airports. In this study, we tried to develop and propose a lower altitude sensing technique which can be used in ground remote sensing by using a CCD camera. As a result of this investigation the following can be concluded: We recognized the transference characteristics of filters which were used in comparative tests about the four ground remote sensing devices. We also found that the near-IR camera could be used for an imaging spectral radiometer in the extraction of the vegetation index. Furthermore, we found that the vegetation index has varied hour by hour during the day of the experiment. Finally, we brought about an increase phase of the NDVI in a forest fire, which caused considerable damage, by developing new ground remote sensing technology.
The Influence Analysis of GIS-based Soil Erosion in Water-pollutant Buffering Zone

Geology and terrain of Imha basin has a very weak characteristics to soil erosion, so much soil particles flow into Imha reservoir and bring about high density turbid water when it rains a lot. Especially, since the agricultural area of Imha basin is mainly located in river boundary, Imha reservoir has suffered from turbid water by soil erosion. Therefore, it is important to estimate the influence of soil erosion to establish efficient management of water-pollutant buffering zone for the reduction of turbid water. By applying GIS-based RUSLE model, this study can acquire 12.23% that is the ratio of soil erosion in water-pollutant buffering zone and is higher than area-ratio (9.95%) of water-pollutant buffering zone. This is why the area-ratio of agricultural district (27.24%) in water-pollutant buffering zone is higher than the area-ratio of agricultural district (14.96%) in Imha basin. Also as the result of soil erosion in sub-basin, Daegok basin shows highest soil erosion in water-pollutant buffering zone, second is Banbyeon_10 basin and last is Seosi basin.
The Comparative Estimation of Soil Erosion for Andong and Imha Basins using GIS Spatial Analysis

Geographically Imha basin is adjacent to Andong basin, but the occurrence of turbid water in each reservoir by storm events shows big differences. Hence, it is very important to identify the reason for these large differences. This study compared and analyzed soil erosion using the semi-empirical soil erosion model, RUSLE for both Imha and Andong basin, especially with emphasis on high-density turbid water. The agricultural district, which is the most vulnerable to soil erosion, was intensively analyzed based on land cover map produced by Ministry of Environment. As a result, the portion of the agricultural area is 11.88% for Andong basin, while it is 14.95% for Imha basin. Also all RUSLE factors excepts practice factor turned out to be higher for Imha basin. This means that the basin characteristics such as soil texture, terrain, and land cover for Imha basin is more vulnerable to soil erosion. Estimation of soil erosion by RUSLE for Andong and Imha basin is 1,275,806 ton and 1,501,608 ton, respectively, showing higher soil erosion by 225,802 ton for Imha basin.
