Development of Off-Ramp Control Model through Signal Optimization

Most off-ramps on urban freeways are generally connected with urban arterial roads which are controlled by traffic signals. In other words, the off-ramp traffic volumes are strongly influenced by the traffic conditions at downstream roads; increasing traffic volumes on downstream roads can cause queue growing on off-ramps and consequently affect flows on highway mainlines. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a control strategy for enhancing the off-ramp capacity and hence, minimizing the delay of vicinity intersections. In this study, a combined signal control model for minimizing total delay of off-ramps and connected downstream arterial roads is developed, in this ways, the proposed model can prevent queue expanding towards the highway mainlines. The studied model calculates an optimal signal time at off-ramp intersections by using linear programming with variables of traffic volumes, link length, queue length, etc. The simulation results show that the combined signal control model can increase the throughput close to the saturation flow and decrease the average delay of whole links.
A Study on the Bicycle Accident Injury Severity at Urban Intersections

Recently, users of bicycles as a green mode are rising sharply, but there are few efforts to increase bicycle safety and to decrease the number of accidents between vehicles and bicycle users. Although the frequencies of accidents between vehicles and bicycle users are relatively lower than only between vehicles, compared to the severity itself, the accident severity between vehicles and bicycle users is much higher. Therefore, this research seeks to improve bicycle safety at intersections by analysing causation factors of bicycle accidents and providing optimal intersection design guidelines. For this study, real bicycle accident data of fifty six occurred in the Incheon metropolitan area in the year of 2005 were collected and field surveys were conducted. In addition, this research developed a bicycle accident prediction model with using ordered probit model. The model results showed that major road ADT, presence of traffic islands on the minor road, presence of bicycle road on major road, presence of major road crosswork, minor road lane width are significant for bicycle safety.
A Study on Calculating Large Discount Store Parking Units in Application of Statistical Analysis Methods

In relation to applying parking supply units for constructing large discount stores, the discord happens with main bodies of large discount store construction, authorities for approval, and traffic influence appraisal members. The reason for such problem is due to the lack of sufficient research on newly born facilities, thus parking spaces are provided rather on quantitative basis than qualitative judgement. In accordance with the over supply of parking spaces, it causes over investment and hence profit reduction. Also, it has reduced life environment by causing the traffic congestion in the neighboring areas. In this study, the appropriate parking units of large discount stores were suggested for each category and each location by constructing the analysis model for parking demand units through whole large discount store surveys in terms of location and scales in each city. As the result of the category analysis of parking units by city scale and store scale, statistical significance was found between large stores in large cities and the medium and small stores in medium and small cities. The application of unit calculation by city scale and store scale showed 80% of appropriateness; therefore, the calculated units were found to be appropriate.
An Analysis of The Vehicle Characteristics to Effect on Highway Traffic Accidents - Focussing on Tire Accidents -

The purpose of this study is to analyze through factor analysis and regression analysis vehicle tire problem to effect on traffic accident. There are composed 5 parts of study process.1. Catch hold of vehicle tire characteristics and relationship between vehicle tire and traffic accident.2. Survey analysis of vehicle tire maintenance and check vehicle tire.3. Factor analysis of real traffic accident data.4. Developing of effect models to find relationship between traffic accident and vehicle problems.5. Present of study limit and following study. This study was found that vehicle tire problems are most important part of vehicle problems. Therefore, we enforce checking vehicle tire when freight vehicle entry freeway. It is the countermeasure to prevent big traffic accident on the freeway.
Speed Correlation Models Within the Merge Influence Area of Urban Freeway Using the Lane-based Speed Characteristics

Generally urban freeway plays a key role in the urban transportation system of the city. However, urban freeways are having a congestion problem on the entrance and exit ramp junctions in Korea. During the rush hours, particularly, serious traffic congestion occurs in the merge and diverge influence areas of the urban freeway in Korea. Thus, the purpose of this study was to identify the traffic characteristics in the merge influence areas of the urban freeway, compare and analyze the correlations between the lane-based traffic characteristics in the merge influence areas, and finally develop the lane-based speed correlation models at the upstream, downstream and ramp spots within the merge influence area of the urban freeway.
Applications of Positive Guidance Techniques on Highway Safety Audit Process

The purpose of this study is to propose concretely the application method of positive guidance techniques on highway safety audit process. There are a number of factors which threaten safety of drivers on highway. In order to make drivers comfortable and safe, those factors must be removed. But it is impossible to remove all factors perfectly because of field conditions and economical efficiency. In this case, we should give drivers information regarding factors of threatening safety. So those will be ready to take action and traffic accidents will be prevented. Positive guidance that is based on this logic develops various alternatives and has the advantage that is more inexpensive than other traffic safety improvement projects. Improving alignment and installing safety facilities on highway affect seriously current traffic flow and are too costly. Therefore, it is desirable to use positive guidance techniques on highway safety audit process. This study suggests the application method of positive guidance techniques as a case study on Gyeong-bu highway. Although positive guidance is hardly used within the country by this time, if applied it on existing road widely, substantial safety improvements can be obtained.
Effect of Seasonal Changes on Subgrade Support in Pavement Structure

Earthwork is an important process in the construction of highways and its criterion of the total construction cost is comparatively high. Foreign criteria on subgrade support have been adopted since the domestic ones are not defined clearly. The California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test and plate loading test are commonly used to evaluate the support value under pavement structure. However, many problems have been raised in controlling the quality of the subgrade during highway construction. With these backgrounds in mind, the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) test was developed and is used in domestic highway sites though its price is high. The research was conducted to estimate the effect of seasonal changes on subgrade support values within pavement structure. The results can be used as a basis in pavement structure. The data was collected from the construction pavement sites in service conditions. Test results revealed that the effect of seasonal changes on subgrade support values within pavement structure was not noticeable though some changes were observed.
Development of a Backcalculation Method for Estimating Pavement Layer Modulus Using the Genetic Algorithm Part I : Selection of the GA Parameters

It is important to predict the structural adequacies of asphalt pavements in service for the efficient pavement management using the falling weight deflectometer (FWD). The purpose of this study is to present the procedure for backcalculating the layer moduli using the FWD deflections and GAPAVE program. The GAPAVE, backcalculation program for layer moduli, developed in this study is based on finite element structural analysis and genetic algorithm. From the sensitivity analysis results, the genetic algorithm parameters are affected by structural and stiffness conditions of pavements. For more accurate backcalculation, the optimized genetic algorithm parameters need to be selected at each pavement condition. This study proposes the procedure for the selection of GA parameters and the reasonable ranges of GA parameters.
Development of a Backcalculation Method for Estimating Pavement Layer Modulus Using the Genetic Algorithm Part II : Verification and Validation

The backcalculation program developed using genetic algorithm and finite element analysis has been verified in this study. A comparison study with MODULUS, EVERCALC program and other GA operators was conducted. To validate the selection procedure of genetic algorithm parameters. It was found that the use of GA operators suggested by the author can improve the prediction accuracy in backcalculating the pavement layer moduli. FWD deflection and resilient modulus test data obtained from Long-Term Pavement Performance database were used for evaluating the performance of the GAPAVE program. Backcalculated asphalt concrete layer moduli and subgrade moduli were good agreement with measured ones. However, there is large discrepancies between predicted and measured subbase moduli. The multi-load level FWD data were used for estimating the nonlinearity of granular material moduli and it is observed that subbase moduli were highly dependent on stress level.
Utilization of Stone Sludges Produced by Stone Manufacturing Process as Asphalt Concrete Filler

This study was conducted to explore the possibility of recycling of waste stone dust sludges as a asphalt concrete filler. The stone dust sludges used in this study consist of 55.68% of SIO2, 19.63% of AL2O3, 2.38% of FeO, and the other minor minerals. Through experiments such as plasticity index, flow test, rate of expansion under water striping resistance, it was found that the stone dust sludges were satisfied with the quality specification of filler. Marshall stability tests on the asphalt concrete containing stone dust sludges showed that the highest Marshall stability values were obtained in case of mixing 4% of stone dust sludges with 3.6% of asphalt for base and in case of mixing 4% of stone dust sludges with 5.2% of asphalt for surface, respectively. These results indicate that the content of asphalt can be reduced by 0.4% for base and 0.2% for surface compared with the standard mixing design. Based on the leaching tests, in addition, only a small amount of lead below the standard level was leached, and no other harmful substances were leached. From this study, the stone dust sludges can be used as a filler for asphalt concrete mixtures, and it makes reducing the production costs of asphalt concrete and also decreases the disposal costs of waste stone dust sludge.
Durability Characteristics of GFRP Dowel Bar for Jointed Concrete Pavement

This study evaluated a long-term durability performance of GFRP dowel bars. The GFRP dowel bars were subjected to five types of environmental condition including alkaline, water, salt, CaCl2, repeated freezing and thawing by the accelerated aging in water solution at an elevated temperature. The durability properties of GFRP dowel bars were investigated by apparent horizontal shear strength test. Results from the accelerated aging test were analyzed to compare with natural real weather environment. Based on the test results, durability characteristics of GFRP dowel bars have been shown acceptable properties and highly resistant to the detrimental affects of the accelerated aging.
Image Recognition of Road Surface Conditions using Polarization and Wavelet Transform

Road surface conditions vary with changes of the weather as snow, rain, dust, shadow, So proper measures can be helpful in improving traffic conditions and safety. This research focus on developing algorithm that classifies road surfaces into four different categories, dry, wet, icy, and snowy surfaces by analyzing asphalt-paved road images taken in daylight. By using the polarization coefficients, the proportions of horizontally polarized components to vertically polarized components, regions with over 1.3 polarization coefficients are classified as wet surfaces. Except for wet surfaces, the algorithm applies time-frequency analysis to other parts by using the third order wavelet packet transform. In addition, by using the average frequency characteristics of dry and icy surfaces from image templates, decide which is closer to a test image, and finally identify dry and icy surfaces. It is confirmed that the proposed algorithm works well on various images. This can be interpreted as an indication that image-only road surface condition supervision is probable.
Structural Integrity Assessment of Asphalt Concrete Pavement System Considering Uncertainties in Material Properties

Structural integrity assessment technique for pavement system is studied considering the uncertainties among the material properties. The artificial neural networks technique is applied for the inverse analysis to estimate the elastic modulus based on the measured deflections from the FWD test. A computer code based on the spectral element method was developed for the accurate and fast analysis of the multi-layered soil structures, and the developed program was used for generating the training and testing patterns for the neural network. Neural networks was applied to estimate the elastic modulus of pavement system using the maximum deflections with and without the uncertainties in the material properties. It was found that the estimation results by the conventional neural networks were very poor when there exist the uncertainties and the estimation results could be significantly improved by adopting the proposed method for generating training patterns considering the uncertainties among material properties.

Development of Decision Making Model for Selecting the Soft Foundation Improvement Method Using AHP technique

Decision makers should select alternative for many soft foundation improvement methods by analyzing various evaluation standards. In this way, this study developed decision makisng model to be used when decision makers select improvement method by AHP technique. Influence factors to be considered when selecting soft foundation improvement method are chosen through influence factors suggested in highway design code and three experts' decisions. Through experts' evaluation relative weight of each influence factor is measured, which proves possibility by applying to real case.
Improving Organizational Effectiveness for Road Construction through Analysis of Manpower Loading and Job Analysis

The goal of this research is to take a critical but objective look at the structure and man power loading of site organizations for domestic road construction projects. The research attempts to identify the minimum and optimal number of field personnel for a given project, identify site activities that may be delegated through outsourcing, and ultimately provide recommendations that allow a more structured and effective approach to manage site organizations. A survey was designed based on a preliminary review of site personnel regulations and an independent effects analysis. Then the survey was distributed to the top 200 general contractors, from which 124 site surveys were analyzed. Analysis of the survey suggests the critical factors for organizational effectiveness including improving field personnel's construction management skills, standardizing on-site processes, strengthening of main office support, and developing a new standard model for site personnel appropriation. Other important recommendations include amending quality control laws to better reflect the reality of site, and consistency in yearly budget appropriation in public projects.
Evaluation of Economical Efficiency of Standard Quantity per Unit by Change of Resource Quantity per Unit

Estimating approach of construction cost is an important factor in judging economical efficiency. This study investigates the standard quantity_per_unit for steel bridge construction which was revised in 2006, applies it to sample bridges, and evaluates if the revised criteria are reasonable in estimating the steel bridge construction cost. Through the investigation, this research compares the construction costs based on the standard of 2005 and 2006 and identifies economical effects by the newly revised criteria.
A Comparative Study on The Characteristics and Dynamic Changes of Urban Spatial Structure among Historic Planned Cities in Korea and Japan - The Case of Suwon City and Hikone City -

The purpose of this study is to identify the potential and challenges of the historic planned cities in Korea and Japan by comparison of the characteristics and changes of their urban spatial structures. The similarities and difference among cities are investigated and the inter-temporal changes and the reasons of them are analyzed for the purpose. In particular, transportation network, urban land use, industrial structure, population structure, and urban policies of the case study areas, Suwon City and Hikone City, are compared in order to find important implications. The results provide the evidences that each city has the unique urban spatial structure though some similarities in social, economic, and cultural backgrounds and locational characteristics are found. There are common factors in emerging the urban area and changes of the two cities: those are political and economic backgrounds and locational conditions. In addition, the two cities have experienced radical changes of street network and land use during the modernization era. Above all, they have common problem, deterioration of the old C.B.D. by expansion of urbanized area according to the growth. Currently, the two cities discover the cultural and economical value of the historic planned city and try to revitalize the old C.B.D. by various approaches. The strategies by them can make a new positive changes in the two cities. In conclusion, it is necessary for the historic planned cities to develop and execute a planning technique responding a new cultural needs of the old C.B.D. and changes of new urban life.
Detection of Cochlodinium Polykrikoides Red Tide Using MODIS Level 2 Data in Coastal Waters

In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for red tide detections, which uses MODIS normalized water-leaving radiance data and Sea surface temperature band. We make this algorithm effective by using spectrum of red tide unlike current red tide detection algorithms which use only chlorophyll information and newly proposed a MRI(MODIS Red tide Index) and its threshold. The algorithm?s effectiveness is verified by detecting large Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tide event that was appeared in Korean coastal waters. This algorithm may be applied to derive initial data for visual interpretations, which allows establishing a red tide monitering system.
