A study on Analysis and Prospect of Travel Pattern on Freeway System during Holidays

The Korean Highway System has been suffering from congestion during holidays such as the Lunar New Year's Day and ChuSuk every year. Findings in this study can be summarized as follows. 1) The number of vehicles using the Highway during the special holiday periods are slightly higher than those during weekdays and weekend. However, average distances traveled are much higher, which could produces larger number of highway links suffering traffic congestion, 2) Trip pattern on holidays may be sustained in near future because the number of people living in different places where they were born will not significantly change.
A Study on Information System on VMS in Consideration with Multiple Alternative Routes

This paper studies the process of VMS strategy, which gives driver information of road. While VMS messages use the processing strategy that concentrates on the event in current, new processing strategy provides special information for each direction of the road. Using new strategy, system operators can help drivers choose their possible routes because drivers can receive information not only of event on the road but also of conditions of detour.
A Study on Estimating Hieratchical Levels and the Number of Intermediate Facilities on Collectiondistribution System

For improving an efficiency of the freight transport system in city logistics, it is important issue that setting in facilities as structure being suitable for hierarchical level and consolidating collection.distribution system. Accordingly, this study plans hierarchical transport system in consideration of collection of high level facility or distribution of low level facility on the assumption that is economies of scale. And, we determine that the number of hierarchical levels and the number of intermediate facilities. For this analysis, we survey the actual operating condition of freight transport as doing interview to truck's driver in Busan's C.B.D. And we determine optimal system in the number of hierarchical levels and the number of intermediate facilities. In this result, the number of hierarchical levels is 3 level. And, the number of 1 hierarchical level's facility, on-street loading bay is 483 and the number of 2 level facility, depot and distribution in city is 22, the number of 3 level facility, freight terminal is 1.
A Study on Information Media Affecting En-route Diversion Behavior on Driver's Decision Making

The key success factors of ATIS depend not only on the good hardware design but on the recognition of drivers' heterogeneity of preference about traffic information. Such being the case, the preference characteristics of traffic information and human factor aspect characteristics should be carefully investigated and proper traffic information strategy should be arranged based on such characteristics. As a basic study of such kind, this paper tried to investigate media used for traffic information provision media. An actual survey was conducted at the tollgate side and the results showed that drivers relied more on the traffic information provided than on his or her previously acquired experience. Additionally, they used traffic information broadcasting radio during the high peak period like Chooseok whereas they normally followed VMS based traffic information during weekend congestion period.
Classification of Freeways based on the Characteristics of Hourly Traffic Variation for Efficient Network Planning

In this study, the variation of hourly traffic volume on freeway is utilized to identify the regional freeway characteristics by evaluating its statistics: variation, coefficient of variation (COV) and coefficient of skewness (COS) for the purpose of proper planning and investment. The obsevation indicates that the COV of freeway in urban area is lower than that of rural area, and the COS in urban area has negative values. A mutlivariate statistical analysis with COV, COS, and AADT, holiday season variation, weekend variation and time of day variation results five different classes of freeway segment. They include freeways in metropolitan, urban, rural areas, and rural-recreational area, and recreational only. Some limitations and future research agenda have also been discussed.
Development of a Congested Traffic Model with Driver Reaction Time and Gap Time

Traffic congestion, which is mostly due to the increase of automobile, is a common phenomenon in most areas. To control traffic congestion, it is required to understand and model congested traffic. However, current traffic flow theories fall short in explaining and modeling the complicated and stochastic features of congested traffic. In this study, we introduce driver's reaction time and gap time as primary variables that can explain the congested traffic. It is assumed that reaction time varies at every deceleration and acceleration phase and it is shown that the speed of traffic wave could change according to the relative difference between reaction time and gap time. In addition, it is demonstrated that the growth and decay of traffic congestion is a result of random propagation of traffic waves. The random transition of flow rate-density in the fundamental diagram is also explained in relation with random traffic wave propagation. This study overcomes some of the limitations of Del Castillo's and Newell's models while bases the linear car-following model as they did. A further study is required to explain the mechanism of the intensification/mitigation of speed variation with the integration of the proposed model and Del Castillo's model.
Life Cycle Cost Analysis of Pavement Maintenance Standard Considering User and Socio-Environmental Cost

This paper aimed at long term life cycle cost analysis for determining optimal pavement maintenance standard. Previous studies were concentrated on agency cost as a main economic index. But it is time to consider not only user cost but also socio-environmental cost. Because these costs become more and more important for global environment, saving energy resource, human's safety and health. Our recent studies tried to estimate optimal maintenance standard based on VOC (Vehicle Operating Cost) and travel time cost by using HDM-4 (Highway Development & Management-4). But it was limited to only agency and user cost. In a strict sense, it can't be referred to as optimal strategy. To determine optimal maintenance standard, we integrated various methodologies estimating socio-environmental cost. Total cost was composed of agency cost included in rehabilitation and routine maintenance, VOC, travel time, emission, accident, work zone delay cost. Besides, we performed HDM-4 re-calibration on vehicle fleet and deterioration model. In conclusion, we suggest that `IRI 3.5~4.0 m/km or rutting 25 mm' is most appropriate (cost-effective) standard for network maintenance of pavement. It is very similar to our previous studies. Also, we know that vehicle operating cost and travel time cost have much higher ratio of pavement life cycle cost than the others.
A Study on the Development of Tele-Operated Concrete Surface Grinding Equipment

Concrete surface grinding process is frequently required to provide flatness of hardened surface and adhesion between previously constructed concrete surface and subsequent layers. However, the concrete surface grinding process has a hazardous work condition and the productivity and the quality of the grinding work are easily affected by the skills of the operating labors. Therefore, the development of the remote-controlled and computer-assisted concrete surface grinding machine is required to make non-hazardous work environment for safety of operators and to provide better productivity and quality of the grinding operation. In this study, a prototype of such machine has been developed. Futhermore, thee technology prposed in this study expected to provide applicable knowledge in the area of especially semi-automation of various types of construction machines.
The Cost Fluctuating Status Analysis Classified Cost Effectiveness Factor for RC Rahmen Bridge

It needs the dependable project estimation for economical efficiency ansalysis and budget at phase the planing and the feasibility study of the construction project. The approximate cost estimation of the each structure in the project estimation have a effect reliance of the total cost because the error range occur largely in poor of the possible use information. In the existing cost estimation method the error range is happening largely as compared with designed cost because use the simple mean of past designed cost. This reason is that not reflect the cost effectiveness factor. In this study for reduce the error range it define the cost effectiveness factor and analyze the cost fluctuation, present the coefficient of variation. Therefor, prepare the base data for reduce the error range in case of the approximate cost estimation for RC rahmen bridge.
Development of Virtual Reality Functions for Visualizing Concept Design Information for Civil Engineering Projects

Many researches for virtual reality (VR) in the construction and maintenance phases are going on the construction industry. However, the applicability researches of VR in the concept design phase are insufficient for practical use. This study suggests a VR system that can be used in the pre-design phase for civil engineering project. For the study, 4 main modules and procedures for bird's eye view system based on VR were deduced by using IDEF model. The modules consist of layer simulation, master schedule simulation, structure type/scale review and 2D simulation. The suggested methodology and VR system can be used for visualizing design information and for managing structural types and numbers of alternative designs.
A Platform Moving Model for an Intelligent Excavator

Recent advances in automation and robotic technologies in the manufacturing industry suggest that the greater level of automation may be extremely beneficial for the construction industry. However, only some of the high-technology advances may be applied to the construction industry due to the fast-changing construction environment in which work locations are constantly changing and material, equipment, and workers are always moving. The earthwork operation for site development is a good candidate for applying automation technology, because it is a very repetitive and tedious task and needs lots of construction equipment. Many of the recently developed systems for earthworks are intelligent assistant tools that enhance operator?s ability to sense, plan, and monitor their works in real time. These tools integrate human operators and construction machines into a whole effective construction system. This paper presents a model of earthwork task planning for an intelligent excavator as an assitant tool, which can produce an effective moving path of an excavator platform with an Octree model. To generate the moving path, the know-how of skilled operators and construction managers is added in the proposed model.
High Resolution 3D Terrain Modelling for Basis Constitution of Ubiquitous Multi-Functional Administrative City

For constructing the U-city, it is necessary to have the 3D terrain and the city modeling as well as it is required to have the high-resolution DEM and the image. Especially, it is expected that KOMPSAT 2 image which will be commercialized starting from 2007 will be used actively in the respect that it is easy to obtain state of the art image. This research is for the high-resolution detailed 3D modeling used for the U-city of the Multi-functional Administrative City. 1 m DEM is made to consider the break line about the road and the hydrological line for the high equality to the real world, and the building modeling is conducted by the terrestrial LiDAR surveying in order to increase the accuracy. We investigate the form of the residential building located in the relevant areas, and generalize the forms into the 9 typical types for the swift modeling. To acquire the attribute information of land use, we analyze the Aster VNIR1 image by Maximum likelihood supervised classification method, overlay the building model to the land model, and present the possibility for the practical administrative utilization and civil service by building the attribute information of the land register, the road network vector data, the name of the administration, etc.
The Selection of GIS- Based Soil Erosion Risk Area Considering Accessibility and River Channel Range

Soil erosion has caused serious environmental problems which threaten the foundation of natural resources. This paper presents a strategic approach to identifying soil erosion risk areas in Andong and Imha basin, which are located next each other. RUSLE, soil loss model was used to quantify soil erosion on the basis of surface characteristics such as soil texture, DEM, land cover map, which is handled by GIS. The entire basin was divided into several sub-basins (e.g. up-, mid-, down-) to perform examination. The results show downstream of the Banbyeon area is a potential risk area due mainly to high agricultural impact, and intensive attention need to be paid for soil conservation and protection program. Then, examination was performed considering the distance from the river channel in the water pollutant buffering zone. The results show Imha is more likely to be exposed to soil erosion risk because of land use impact. It means soil protection program may need to be established with emphasis of water pollutant buffering zone of Imha basin.
A Study on the Development of City Model Using Ubiquitous Technology

The Shiwa was developed by banwol special area and it is holding a many problem for a residential area. It controls about 80% of the waste in the capital region area and it is urgent to the improvement of life environment. Thus, It is necessary to effort for the development of ecological intelligence city which is agreed with a peculiarity and function. In this study, it is intended to analyze ubiquitous technology and develop the special service model of the ecological, marin based tourist and circulation city which is for the solution of the point at issue and the enforcement of competitiveness. It is intended to create the city specialization model of a shiwa zone using ubiquitous technology. it is aim to provide the life style which is fine and convenient.
Digital Elevation Model Compressive Format Transformation using Wavelet Method

In this paper, improved wavelet algorithm is proposed for an effective digital elevation model compressive format using JPEG2000 compressive format. This improved algorithms presents for reducing root mean square error of digital elevation model reconstruction using separations between satellite image data and digital elevation model. It is shown that the proposed wavelet algorithm achieves low RMSE and it also demonstrates higher PSNR under per same bit rate whereas standard JPEG2000 format. The experimental results imply the possibility that the improved method can be applied to digital elevation model data which require better data accuracy.
A Modified CA-Markov Technique for Prediction of Future Land Use Change

The purpose of this study is to suggest a prediction method of land use change by modifying CA-Markov technique. In the modified method, a logarithmic function was reflected for the trend of past land use change of each item. Data of water quality protection area and green belt area were considered to include systematic factor. In addition, the minimal preserved probability that is the percent of upper limit of land use change between land use classes in the process of prediction was applied to prevent unrealistic prediction of future land use. The prediction results of original and modified CA-Markov were evaluated by comparing indices (a: the ratio of matched cell number of the predicted to the total cell number of the known, b: the ratio of matched cell number of the predicted to the total cell number as sum of sets of the known and the predicted, g: the ratio of cell number of the predicted to the cell number of the known) which compare the spatial fit between the known and the predicted. For Anseongcheon watershed (371.1 km2), the 2000 land uses were predicted using the 3 past land use data (1985, 1990, 1995). The values of a, b, and g for urban area were 0.69, 0.63, 0.80 for the modified CA-Markov and 0.52, 0.45, 0.68 for the original CA-Markov respectively.
Coordinate Transformation Algorithm of the Lane Image Data for the Measuring of Road Shape

When it is constructed, the road is designed and constructed with sufficient consideration of driving environment and road safety. But it could be in the different situation from the beginning due to the change of shape, expansion or repaving. So, in this study, a new method is suggested to measure road shape rapidly and accurately as a factor to estimate road safety and the new algorithm is developed to process acquired image data and apply coordinate transformation. Accuracy of the algorithm was analysed through the real test and the algorithm represented very accurate result at the measurement of the road shape. Therefore, in the case using the newly developed algorithm, it is expected that the change of road shape could be estimated accurately and efficiently.
