Development of Real-Time Optimal Bus Scheduling Models

Many studies on bus scheduling optimization have been done from the 1960s to recent years for establishing rational bus schedule plan that can improve convenience of bus passengers and minimize unnecessary runs. After 2000, as part of the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), the importance of the schedule management and providing schedule information through bus schedule optimization has become a big issue, and much research is being done to develop optimization models that will increase bus passenger convenience and, on the side of bus management, minimize unnecessary bus operation. The purpose of this study is to calculate the optimal bus frequency and create a timetable for each bus stop by applying DTR or DTRC model that use data for each bus stop and route segment. Model verification process was implemented using data collected from bus management system (BMS) and integrated transit-fare card system for bus route of Seoul's No. 472 line. In order to evaluate the reliability and uncertainty of optimal solution, sensitivity analysis was implemented for the various parameters and assumptions used in the bus scheduling model.
Develpoment of Customer Satisfaction Model of Providing Traffic Information through VMS on the Freeway

ATIS(Advanced Traffic Information System) provide valuable information as the travel time and traffic congestion, detour, traffic accident information to drivers, so it is being in the spotlight. But so far, the study on the consumer satisfaction with providing traffic information is incomplete. So, this study run a Canonical discriminant analysis and a Canonical correlation analysis by a QuantificationIItheory based on a Traffic Information Satisfaction image data through questionnaires, and found out the factors with influence on the consumer satisfaction. And this study definitely found out the correlation between consumer's recognition and traffic information satisfaction through understanding the change on the recognition about traffic information satisfaction by a QuantificationItheory. Finally, this study found out the change on the sensibility recognition of drivers by running the principal component anlysis, developed the traffic information satisfaction evaluation model considering the change on the recognition by using the structural equation model.
A Study on the Construction of Geospatial DB for the Connectivity Transfer Pedestrian Concierge Service

A Pedestrian Space in the transit transfer center is compositively made of a variety of activities for pedestrians. The pedestrians avoid access to the transit transfer center and the revitalization of the transit transfer center is obstructed as the travel cost of the pedestrians increases. This study provides the pedestrians using the transit transfer center with the significant real-time routing service and helps the movement of pedestrians to minimize the economical loss considering the travel cost and congestion of the pedestrians in the transit transfer center. In this paper, we propose a solution to construct a spatial map for the pedestrians in the transit transfer center to receive the significant real-time routing service based on Ubiquitous technique which is big issue around the world.
Timed-Transfer System: its Application and Effects on Bus Transit System

In low-density areas where travel pattern is widely dispersed and travel demand is relatively low, transit operators find it very difficult to provide a reasonable level of service at a reasonable cost. Timed-transfer system or network, if designed properly, can provide a reasonable level of service for passengers using transit systems serving low-density areas. The paper intends to apply a timed-transfer system for bus lines serving Yangsan City area and to assess the effects resulted from the application. The concept of a timed-transfer network/system is briefly described, and the present conditions of bus systems in Yangsan City area are discussed, focusing on the aspects of network type and the related problems. The bus timed-transfer network for the area is then developed by adjusting the existing routes and network with the consideration of travel time, route alignments, headways and transfer centers. One must note that developing a timed-transfer network presumes that network and schedule should be developed together. The effects of the developed time-transfer system on the passengers and operators are found substantially so as to justify its introduction to the City. The results of this study will be of considerable use for planners to design the transit systems in low density areas, where in general travel activities are widely dispersed and travel demands are low, so that provision of good quality of transit services are difficult.
Development of Measure of Effectiveness (MOE) and Algorithm for Hazard Level at Curve Sections

At present, there is a no rational MOE for evaluating hazard level at curve sections. Therefore, this study focus on developing the MOE and algorithm for hazard level at curve sections. The scopes of this study limited to rural two-way roads. Actual data used is accident, geometric features, safety facilities of the selected sites at curve sections. In order to develop MOE for hazard level at curve sections, accident contributing factors were classified by road geometry, visual guidance facility, speed and driver factor. A relationship between the four factors mentioned and accidents was conducted. And, the MOE for hazard level at curve sections was derived from the previous relationship analysis, and the algorithm for hazard level was developed. Finally, worksheets were suggested based on the MOE and algorithm for road designers. These developed MOE and algorithm can be used to reduce serious accident contributing factors when designing roads and also, these will be used to determine an order of priority when reconstructing roads.
Analysis of Basic Characteristics for Providing Parking Information

The objective of this research is to establish the relationship between the important variables necessary for real-time available parking space presumption algorithm for a parking lot information provision. So it investigated the variables that come relate to the algorithm and collected parking information for an algorithm plan. It analyzed variables inciuding average number of parked cars, average parked time, rate of turnover, occupancy, cumulative number of parked cars, and etc. of the parking lot. And it collected data regarding illegal parking, double space parking, searching car and it presumed the number of available parking spaces. As a result of the research, It appeared that the achieved accuracy is superier to existing provision system which only take the total input and output numbers. This will help drivers' judgement, and also the parking lot operation and management.
A Traffic Equilibrium Model with Area-Based Non Additive Road Pricing Schemes

In the definition of non additive path, the sum of travel costs of links making up the path is not equal to the path cost. There are a variety of cases that non-additivity assumption does not hold in transportation fields. Nonetheless, traffic equilibrium models are generally built up on the fundamental hypothesis of additivity assumption. In this case traffic equilibrium models are only applicable within restrictive conditions of the path cost being linear functions of link cost. Area-wide road pricing is known as an example of realistic transportation situations, which violates such additivity assumption. Because travel fare is charged at the moment of driver's passing by exit gate while identified at entry gate, it may not be added linearly proportional to link costs. This research proposes a novel Wordrop type of traffic equilibrium model in terms of area-wide road pricing schemes. It introduces binary indicator variable for the sake of transforming non-additive path cost to additive. Since conventional shortest path and Frank-Wolfe algorithm can be applied without route enumeration and network representation is not required, it can be recognized more generalized model compared to the pre-proposed approaches. Theoretical proofs and case studies are demonstrated.
Analyzing Site Reliability for Residential, Civil and Plant Projects using Lean Construction Principles

Lean Construction recommends implementing site production management by measuring the reliability of daily production tasks, collecting the causes for failure of incomplete tasks, and identifying problems in the existing process based on the collected data. Although many research projects have been performed to introduce Lean Construction in Korea, there are not many cases in which day-to-day site production operations has been stringently evaluated based on such methods. This paper introduces three cases in which such techniques were implemented on a residential, civil infrastructure and plant project. On each project, process maps were created with the superintendents and daily production meetings were held for two weeks. Consequently, the average PPC for the three projects was 79% for PPC and 16% for PAT. In addition, the majority of the failures were due to 'Directive/Plan' and 'Prerequisites.' The results show that project stakeholders (owners, contractors, etc.) lack the ability to plan ahead and keep to their plans, and also lack the capability to synchronize workflow between themselves. The results also reveal that project participants need to be more proactive in solving process problems on site and also need to be better educated in Lean concepts and methodologies.
Tunnel Cost Estimating Model Based on Standard Section and Cost Variance Index (I) - Analysis Of Critical Cost Factors -

The objective of this paper is to provide an approximate cost estimating model for tunnel that can be utilized both in quick construction cost estimating for design alternatives, and in evaluating efficiently the cost effects according to the environmental changes during design and construction stage. To meet this requirement, this study analyzes critical cost factors influencing tunnel construction costs. The cost factors include 7 elements such as rock drilling method, advancing method, type of detonator, loader capacity, unit weight and soil volume change factor, length of tunnel. This paper investigates the cost variance according to the change of the cost factors. The result is expected to be used in formulating approximate tunnel cost estimating model.

The paper provides an approximate cost estimating model that can be used for tunnel. Based on the previous study analyzed critical factors that have impact on tunnel construction cost, this paper establishes a cost variance index table that reflects the cost impacts due to the change of the critical cost factors. An estimating procedure is described utilizing the index table. For the verification of the suggested model, the comparison of the estimated construction cost with real project cost is performed. The estimated results range from 95%~111% of the real project costs. As an approximate tunnel cost estimating model, the model can be utilized to quickly estimate tunnel construction costs based on the conceptual information at the planning stage and to efficiently make a decision on design alternatives.
Estimating System for Responsible Days of Schedule Delay for Construction Projects through Time Impact Analysis

Recently, construction projects are being gradually changed to large projects with complicated work processes. As a result, claims are increasing as well. Of these, the claims by delayed construction duration are given much weight in the general construction claims. To solve this problem, researches to estimate damages due to delay are carried out in research institutes by analyzing the causes of schedule delay. A system to easily estimate responsible days by analyzing the complicated processes needs for project manager. This study suggests a methodology based on the time impact analysis method, which can utilize the consequential analytical method with the consideration of reduced construction period. The suggested methodology is verified by comparing with actual data of case study by the computerized system for estimating the responsible days.
Risk Assessment on the Water BOT Business Participation in China : Domestic EPC Contractor's View

China water market has huge potential for increased use of BOT mode and one of the most attractive markets of doing business. However, the current China water BOT market shows that many foreign companies are retreating from the market while Chinese water companies fast growing. From the view no domestic companies have track records in China BOT water market, the research identified twenty market access barriers in terms of construction laws, regulations, BOT-related policy and the recent market situation. These are evaluated based on interview results with 10 professionals direct or indirect having a China water BOT experience. All the factors are found to be highly influential to foreign company's decision on the market participation. Among those, no fixed return policy and low water price, difficulty in water price adjustment and approval, and no government guarantees, all directly related to the project viability and under the control of government, were the most critical factors, implying government's role is the key in increasing the market competition by attracting more foreign participation on the market. In addition, new construction law regulating foreign EPC contractor's construction work, namely Decree 113, and requirement of applying competitive bidding in selecting EPC contractor in a BOT project are also considered signigicant barriers on foreign participation, which contradicts international norm and therefore necessitates an adjustment on current decision process in domestic companies.
A Study on the Decision Making for Location Selection of Large-scale Discount Stores

The purpose of this study using Fuzzy AHP technique as a decision support system is to propose a structured and available decision making process for location selection of large-scale discount stores. The procedure of this study is divided into two parts to estimate the relative weights of evaluation criteria and analyze the sites of some large discount stores. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; First, compared with the other criteria, the population of primary trade area has the most weight, and moreover, there are the number of rival businesses, dimensions of roads, total population, lot size, purchase cost in order of size. Lastly, the sites of six stores are evaluated relatively, then the optimal location is selected, which proves the applicability for decision making process this study suggests.
Analysis of Spatial Association of Regional Economic Growth and Land Use Considering Regional Economic Sphere

The aim of this study is to analyze the spatial association of regional economic growth and land use considering 5 plus 2 regional economic sphere (Capital region zone, Chungchung zone, Honam zone, Daekyung zone, Dongnam zone and kangwon zone, Jejudo zone) in Korea. The factors of regional economic growth are GRDP and the rate of self-finance and land use, especially industrial and manufactering zone. The data for this research are obtained by National Statistical Office web-site etc. For this, the Seemingly Unrelated Regression(SUR), as a kind of simultaneous equation model, is employed as empirical analysis. Overall results of this study show that the spatial association of the capital region zone and other zones is complementary. but Honam zone and Dongnam zone or Daekyung zone is competitive. We conclude from this study that the policy of regional development will be considered in accordance with the regional economic growth and land use. Also, this study found that Economic growth of regional economic sphere will be achieved from that of cities within zone and the results will be helpful to policy makers and regional planners when establishing regional planning in the future.
A Study on the Problems and the Betterment Plan in Operating District Units Plan of the City in Busan Metropolitan

In this paper, the problems and betterment plan in operating district units plan are studied by selecting typal case locations based on the types of district units plan of the city of Busan. According to the types, 4 locations of 'type of maintaining preexisting district' and 3 of 'type of managing preexisting district' are selected as case locations, based on a scale and characteristics of each location.In systematical aspects of the case locations, indiscreet upward adjustment of the locations, insignificant participation of the citizens and patternization were recognized as problems. And setting accurate standards for target and range of alteration in line with usage plan of the locations would be necessarily urgent. So through the analysing process of the problems arisen from the case locations I would suggests necessary solutions to improve the effectiveness of the district units plan. And In planning aspects, the similarity between the basic directions and the object, batch-application of the density plan, inadequacy of the usage plan, allocations and patterns of structures, and color planning were recognized to have problematic points. Consequently distinguished specific operating-guidelines would be necessary to achieve the basic directions and the object of district units plan. Furthermore, the building-to-land ratio and floor space index are needed to be exactly calculated through providing accurate and logical standards for appropriate development density of structures.
Assessment of the New Capacity and LOS of Transfer Facilities in the High-speed Railway Stations

The Design manual for adjusting the capacity and LOS of facilities has been shared in urban railways and high-speed railway stations. However, the pattern of urban railways users and those of high-speed railway users are different from each other. For an example, the high-speed railway users tend to carry voluminous luggages and the transportation disadvantaged such as children and the elderlies. Accordingly, we see that the scale of facilities and the station itself should be constructed differently. The transfer facilities in the high-speed railway stations are classified widely into walking assisting facilities and convenient facilities. We invented the concept of PME (Pedestrian Moving Equivalent) and PWE (Pedestrian Waiting Equivalent)for the spatial calculation of those who are with wheeled luggages, back packs, and children to reflect the uniqueness of users in high-speed railway stations. These equivalents have been applied to the design of the facilities to asses the new Capacity and LOS that are users' favored.
Development of Hybrid Geoid using the Various Gravimetric Reduction Methods in Korea

Nowadays, the accuracy of the geoid model has been improved through development of the combination model which was composed of traditional gravimetric geoid and geometric geoid by the GPS/leveling data in USA and Japan. It is a state of the art method in geoid modeling field that what so called hybrid geoid. In this paper, as a basic study to develop Korean hybrid geoid model, we studied gravimetric geoid solutions using three gravity reduction methods (Helmert's condensation method, RTM method and Airy-isostatic method) and evaluated the usefulness of each method in context of precise geoid. The gravimetric geoid model were determined by restoring the gravity anomalies (included TC) and the indirect effects were made from various reduction methods on the EIGEN-CG03C reference field. The results are compared with respect to the geometric geoid undulation determined from 498 GPS/leveling after LSC fitting. Development of 3D GIS System for the Visualization of Flood Inundation Area

Recently, flood damages have increased with heavy rainfall and typhoon influences, and it requires that visualization information to the flood inundation area of downstream in dam discharge. This study developed 3D GIS system that can visualize flood inundation area for Namgang Dam downstream. First, DEMs extracted from NGIS digital maps and IKONOS satellite images were optimized to mount in iWorld engine using TextureMaker and HeightMaker modules. And flood inundation area of downstream could be efficiently extracted with real-time flooding water level using Coordinate Operation System for Flood control In Multi-reservoir (COSFIM) and Flood Wave routing model (FLDWAV) in river cross section. This visualization information of flood inundation area can be used to examine flood weakness district needed in real time Dam operation and be applied to establish the rapid flood disaster countermeasures efficiently.
