Analysis on Propagation of Highway Traffic Flow Turbulence at Entrance-Ramp Junctions

In general, an influenced area of merging section is defined as 500 m including 100 m upstream and 400 m downstream. However, from an observation of the actual traffic flow, it is found that merging effect influences more on downstream than upstream. In this study, an influenced area of merging section on freeway is analyzed by using turbulence which is defined as conflicts between vehicles. In order to overcome the limits of existing traffic flow detection system established with intervals of about 500 m, this study uses raw data collected from the detectors which are established in entrance ramps with similar road conditions. To divide data of each point into similar road conditions, the data of total 72 hours is sorted by Level of Service. An influenced area analyzed by standard deviation of speed is 700 m section of highway, including 300 m upstream and 400 m downstream, for both right and left ramps. It is the result including upstream 200 m more than previous studies.
A Study on Revising the National ITS Architecture

Korean government has developed the 1st version of the National ITS Architecture in 1999 and utilized it as the framework for ITS planning, design, and standardization. The National Architecture now needs to be revised to accommodate environmental changes in ITS market and advancement of ITS core technologies. This study evaluates the current version of the architecture and suggests the directions for revision for a new national ITS architecture. The two most popular methodologies for architecture development-the process-oriented approach and the object-oriented approach-were reviewed, and the process-oriented approach was selected for new architecture development. The concept of the national architecture was then newly defined based on evaluation of the existing architecture. The new National ITS Architecture is suggested to be composed of ITS user services, logical architecture, physical architecture, and project architecture. This study must be followed by actual architecture development efforts and supporting policy actions for successful deployment of the new National ITS Architecture.
A Comparative Study on the Service Characteristics for Transferring Process of High-Speed Rail and Domestic Airline Systems by Using Structural Equation Modeling

In order to improve continuous success and stabilization of high-speed rail in the future, Using Frequency of high-speed rail should be enhanced by improving satisfaction of high-speed rail passenger. High-speed rail is needed to hold the priority in competition means by comparing the traits of service of domestic air lines. This study utilizes structural equation modeling to develop model for estimating factors influencing to service through conducting survey questionnaire. It also uses reliability analysis, correlation analysis, factor analysis to examine the rationalization of items and to establish hypothesis of this research. The results show that KTX contains 'inner service' item that is considered to be ameliorated and that domestic airline present low performance of 'outer service' item. In other words, moving section which partly is under a limited condition is needed to be improved. In addition, access to airport and transfer to other transportations have to be improved as they show the lowest satisfaction.
A Development of Criteria for Evaluating School Zone by Utilizing Analytic Network Process

This study choose the Criteria by conducting survey questionnaire of expertise, ANP analysis, and reviewing literature to samples of School Zone in a synthetic and reasonable way. It draws the estimating factors including a variety of existing aspects (user, facility, operation and management, and education and institution) from the analyses and applies ANP to reflect the decision making process. The results show as follows: first, first level of weights presents proportion of 'facility' and 'user' takes 65% of total weights. It implies that the facility protects children from obstacles is the top priority of the settings. second, the second level of weights present similar importance with the first level. Facility management, road to school, surroundings, safety facility, decelerating facility hold approximately 72% of overall levels. This indicates that improving and repairing surroundings, and safety and decelerating facility are the first priority to consider. These estimating indicators will be properly utilized to rationally appoint prevention zone with reflecting various factors and social class.
UTIS Vitalization Countermeasures Using Traffic Information Use Satisfaction Rate Model

We tried to show the course of UTIS vitalization, promoting to introduce as part of the advanced traveler information system through analysis using traffic information gap model of service and structural equation modeling being used by drivers. The summary of the research is as follows. 1. We could find out the service matters needed to improve and what should be prior that make drivers' use increase through establishing the gap model of service. 2. We could establish the structural equation modeling through using traffic information use satisfaction rate, entire traffic information satisfaction rate as the observation variables. You can say it is the fruit of this research that it was confirmed the entire satisfaction rate of traffic information influenced extension, convenience, accuracy, economical efficiency in order. We could also arrange the base to determine the order of services for vitalization of UTIS in the future through grasping the priority of each service functions classified by factors. 3. It is confirmed that many drivers want multimedia function, driving support function and various functions for the personal convenience in situations except driving, which enable the drivers to enjoy leisures and interests rather than economical functions during driving due to the recent social and economic changes.
A Study on Paving Technique using Polymer Epoxy Resin Materials

This study was conducted to develop a thin paving technique using polymer epoxy resin materials which is considered as a durable pavement materials. The mechanical performance characteristics of the polymer epoxy resin materials were also evaluated to confirm the validity as a pavement materials. To estimate the performance properties of the materials, bending tests and bonding tests were performed using freeze-thaw and ultra-violet rays to accelerate the aging of materials. In addition, HYUNStay, a commercial structural analysis program for cable-stayed bridges, was used to compare the effect of paving materials between the polymer epoxy resin materials and the conventional ones on the reduction of cable tension and on the stability of the main tower. According to the test results, it is noted that the thin paving technique using polymer epoxy resin materials can improve the performance and durability of pavement compared to the conventional one.
Design of Drop Islands to Accommodate the Left Turn Trajectory and Stop Bar

The study on the left turning trajectory has not done many times in Korea. Because of this, there are a lot of intersections built without considering on turning trajectory of vehicles, in Korea, and we can see many conflicts, reduced capacity of turn, especially at small intersections. Even if left turn trajectory is designed well, it is not easy to mark exactly on the pavement according to the turn trajectory. This study suggests "drop Islands" which can be seen in Europe, and is introduced in Korea recently, to solve the problems of conflicts and reduced capacity of turning. It suggests a table of location of the stop line so that the engineers who design the intersection design appropriate left turn trajectory and marking of the stop line and turn trajectory is done more exactly. To evaluate the effect of "drop island", two intersections with and without drop island were compared on the turnning radii and location of stop line. Construction of "drop island" can increase the capacity of intersection and safety without additional land and construction expenses.
A Study on the Length of Deceleration Lane at Freeway Diverging Areas

At present, the length of deceleration lane at freeway diverging areas are designed based on the design speed of main lines and ramps. This is possible on assumption that diverging vehicles decelerate at deceleration section after moving to shoulder lane in advance. But with high diverging volume, several vehicles will try to change to exit lane at the same time. This will cause the distribution of main lane flows or some vehicles may encounter short deceleration length because they miss the proper time to change the lane. The purpose of this study is to establish a design guideline of the length of deceleration section considering the volume of diverging traffic. Also, the results of analysis by the FRESIM simulation model shows that some improvements in respect of delays, speeds and speed deviations of mainline and deceleration lane.
Consecutive Design VE Process Emphasized on Follow-up Activities

Design Value Engineering (VE) has become an import part of the daily design process since it has been introduced in the construction industry. Design VE is usually conducted in the general and execution design stages respectively. In order to increase the effectiveness of the VE process, the outcome from the general design VE activities should be integrated into execution design. The outcome from the execution design should be used again for construction. In this study, a consecutive VE process model has been presented as a way to improve the current practice of design VE activities in the construction industry. In the presented model, follow-up activities are emphasized to increase values from the life-cycle perspective of a construction project. The model was tested in a case study of an actual design VE process. The result of the study demonstrates that the model can: 1) effectively incorporate owners requirements; 2) assist decision making in selecting better construction; 3) increase the interface between general and execution design stages; and 4) trace the value flow more efficiently. Overall, the study results indicates that a the consecutive VE process model can be effectively applied when construction project are contracted for the life-cycle management of construction projects.
Study on the Application of Dry-Ice Blaster for Development of Automatic Stripe-Line Removal

Road facility is the most fundamental infrastructure for traffic and various information for smooth traffic is included in road surfaces. Various information included in road surfaces should be often removed and reinstalled by partial damage and aging. In addition, the existing road surface information should be removed in order to mark new information as traffic information changes. The existing road surface removal method suing grinders and torches had problems such as dangerous working equipment and workers' direct exposure to cars. In addition, although water-jet system using super high-pressure water was used to remove road surface in order of improvement of traditional method, there are another problems such as limitations according to water-tanks and water frost on the road surfaces after work. Therefore, this study analyzes and suggests systems to develop prototype after analyzing dry ice blaster in order to improve the current road surface removal methods. In addition, the study analyzes the possibility of introduction of dry ice blaster through a test for proposing an automatized equipment for new road surface mark removal considering environment and work efficiency, and compare traditional method with introduced dry ice blaster for operating cost.
Development of Disaster Management IETM for Effective Disaster Information Management of Construction Facilities

Because the current disaster management task is being processed by using a separated operation system and an insufficient information system by each division, construction facilities suffer great damage by disaster. This research has classified the disaster management business phase and information by each phase through analyzing the existing disaster management information and business process. Then, it has built a disaster management information breakdown structure for integrating of individual disaster information, and also established a standard XML (eXtensible Markup Language) schema of disaster management electronic documents for a real-time utilization. The suggested methods in this research are verified by developing a manual system of electronic type. The disaster management IETM developed in this study provides the consistency for processing the disaster management tasks and the prevention of information omission. And it can be used as a electronic decision making tool for providing of integrated disaster management information.
Analysis of the Urban Interactions of Seoul Metropolitan Region using Commuting Data and GIS

To predict the urban growth trend and to prevent the metropolitan problems, it is important to track the spatio-temporal changes in the urban spatial structure. Commuting is inevitable and regular activities emerging in the metropolitan region. Therefore, it can be a useful to examine the interregional interaction and the urban spatial change. The purpose of this study is to investigate the urban interaction between Seoul and cities around Seoul Metropolitan Region, and GIS functions helped analysis and visualized results. An analysis of current commuting data using the Gravity Model suggests that the interaction between Seoul and its peripheral cities has been intensified from 1990 to 2000 and that the urban interaction was closely related to the distance. And the southward distribution of the cities having a strong interaction with Seoul accounts for the imbalance in growing of Seoul Metropolitan Region.
A Study on the Effect Analysis Which the Activation Plan by Ttransferring Government Building Reaches in the Neighboring Area

As a government building transferred to the outskirts of a city, it's easy to foresee a doughnut effect from advancement process of the city. In the case of Busan city comparing different cities a doughnut effect is being advanced seriously. To the access method for a city center activation the possibility which there will be a various branch, but in this research we analyzed factors of the stagnation in the public Government building neighboring area. And then made a proposal for the city activation plan by transferring the public Government building, analyze influence to surrounding areas using factor analysis. Hence, the object of this paper is to propose a plan for the activation of existig city and evaluates it which is presented consequently. In the case of Dongrae government office, a problem of the neighboring area and condition of present were surveyed and causes of the stagnation in existing city analyzed. Consequently the important five factors were extracted as follows; 1) historical and the cultural factor, 2) factor of creating the special street, 3) urban planning factor, 4) factor of transferring government office.
Analyzing the Determinants and Estimate cost against Resettlement on New Town Project Using Ordinal Logit Model

The aim of this paper is to analyze resettlement cost and decision factors of resettlement since Redevelopment Promotion Projects. Range of resettlement cost was averagely increased 204% by using actual data. Consequently, the research is operated for aboriginal people in these areas by a questionnaire. The questionnaire ask a payment range of the resettlement cost with 4 stages; 150% and less, 180% and less, 200% and less, excess of 200%. Research scope is consist of Seo-kumsa, Civil Park, Chung-mu and Young-do. These areas are redevelopment of Busan metropolitan city. Resettlement is come under the influence of the resettlement cost and many factors by each specific character. In many alternatives for resettlement, understanding the reason why aboriginal peoples select a certain alternative and if we actualize the proper alternative, aboriginal peoples' resettlement ratio will be increased. Moreover it ask housing characteristic, housing life pattern for understanding aboriginal peoples' characteristic. Also data analysis model is ordinal logistic model'. In analysis result, resettlement cost is 150% of aboriginal assets. and significance parameter is sex, job, income, region, affection, attachment, housing possession type, size and others have influence on aboriginal peoples' resettlement.
Effect of Guideway Characteristics on Runnability of Actively Controlled Maglev Vehicle

The purpose of present study is to examine the effect of guideway characteristics on runnability of low and medium speed maglev vehicle. Dynamic governing equation for 2-dof vehicle and optimal feedback control scheme are developed. And then the effect of vehicle speed, rail roughness, guideway deflection, continuity of spans, each span length on dynamic response of the UTM-01 maglev vehicle are investigated. From the numerical simulation, it is found that the gap between bogie and guideway does not increase greatly within design velocity of the vehicle. The response of vehicle are mostly affected by the guideway deflection rather than rail roughness. As a result of the present study, the runnability of maglev vehicle can be improved by reducing the maximum deflection of guideway and adopting the continuous girder systems.
Modified a'trous Algorithm based Wavelet Pan-sharpening Method Using IKONOS Image

The object of image fusion is to integrate information from multiple images as the same scene. In the satellite image fusion, many image fusion methods have been proposed for combining a high resolution panchromatic(PAN) image with low resolution multispectral(MS) images and it is very important to preserve both the spatial detail and the spectral information of fusion result. The image fusion method using wavelet transform shows good result compared with other fusion methods in preserving spectral information. This study proposes a modified a'trous algorithm based wavelet image fusion method using IKONOS image. Based on the result of experiment using IKONOS image, we confirmed that proposed method was more effective in preserving spatial detail and spectral information than existing fusion methods using a'trous algorithm.
Real-Time Terrain Visualization with Hierarchical Structure

Interactive terrain visualization is an important research area with applications in GIS, games, virtual reality, scientific visualization and flight simulators, besides having military use. This is a complex and challenging problem considering that some applications require precise visualizations of huge data sets at real-time rates. In general, the size of data sets makes rendering at real-time difficult since the terrain data cannot fit entirely in memory. In this paper, we suggest the effective Real-time LOD(level-of-detail) algorithm for displaying the huge terrain data and processing mass geometry. We used a hierarchy structure with
tiles for real-time rendering of mass volume DEM which acquired from Digital map, LiDAR, DTM and DSM. Moreover, texture mapping is performed to visualize realistically while displaying height data of normalized Giga Byte level with user oriented terrain information and creating hill shade map using height data to hierarchy tile structure of file type. Large volume of terrain data was transformed to LOD data for real time visualization. This paper show the new LOD algorithm for seamless visualization, high quality, minimize the data loss and maximize the frame speed.
Application of Quality Control Procedure to Improve Reliability of GPS Positioning

In order to estimate accurate position by GPS observations, it is prerequisite to define both of the correct function model and the realistic stochastic model. In the case that un-modeled outliers exist in observations, estimates become biased, and their standard deviations are unable to be used as a measure which represents their accuracy. Hence, such outliers should be appropriately removed from the observations before estimating final solutions, so that the accuracy can be maximized with the improvement of the reliability. For this purpose, this research deals with quality control and quality measure computation algorithms for GPS stand-alone positioning. After theoretical studies, all the algorithms have been implemented and tested with real observations. Results of the tests indicate that the reliability of the estimated position is improved by increasing redundancy as well as using good satellite geometry and more realistic stochastic model. Moreover, the adaptation of the quality control procedure enable to improve positioning reliability and accuracy by appropriately excluding outlier in observations.
