Comparing the Service Coverages of Subways and Buses and Estimating the Walking Distances of Their Users

The light rail transit (LRT) having bus lines as subsystem is being constructed or planned in the suburban area of metropolitans and medium size cities. However, there is difficulty in establishing the service coverage (SC) of the LRT because the LRT is a completely new transit mode in Korea. The purpose of this study is to provide the basic data and techniques to be used for establishing the SC of the future LRT by understanding the SC characteristics of buses and subways and building models to estimate the walking distances of their users. Busan City is selected as the study city and the SC's of buses and subways are surveyed simultaneously. A total of 9 variables for 82 stations are collected and the cluster analysis is conducted about the variables. The station areas are divided to three types of CBD (Central Business District), sub-CBD and regional center based on the analysis. A station in each area is selected as the study station. At the walking distance (WD) analysis for each mode, the 80 percentile WD of the subway is 672 m and that of the bus is 472 m. In comparing the SC's of both modes by the type of station areas, there are not significant differences between the SC's of sub-CBD and regional center except CBD. At analysis of the relationship between the personal attributes and the WD, for subway users the WD of female is longer than that of male and apartment residents use subway more positively than single house residents do. For the models to estimate the walking distances, the simple regression models were built employing the income as independent variable by dividing the stations into CBD abd non-CBD stations.
A Study on the Factors Influencing the Number of Enforcement on Traffic Signal Violation - Focused on Daegu City -

This study examined the factors influencing the number of enforcement cases on traffic signal violation. The study collected enforcement data on traffic signal violation by multi-functional unmanned cameras across the Daegu metropolitan area, and analyzed the data to determine correlations among various factors including physical dimensions and engineering characteristics of the roadway as to how they would influence the number of violations. The resulting analysis provided a general model that assesses applicability for multi-functional unmanned cameras, and further shed helpful insights on efficient utilization of such traffic signal enforcement equipments in terms of installation thresholds and location. By identifying violation-prone features and characteristics and subsequent enforcement considerations, this research also supports safety efforts in reducing the number of traffic accidents as well.
A Study of the Priority Order Valuation for Multi-Intermodal Transfer Center

Recently, several number of Multi-Intermodal Transfer Center are nominated to improve convenience of public transportation user. Due to budget constraints, it should be defined which is the first consideration among the discussed many works. In this circumstance, there are some absurdities in the evaluation of validity of existing methods. Therefore, we suggested the Priority Order Valuation for Multi-Intermodal Transfer Centerer. The evaluation method, we suggested, is considered quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis. In this study, we find out that B/C ratio and construction costs are strongly related to the quantitative analysis so that Multi-Intermodal Transfer Centers in metropolitan area are evaluated the positive results. Therefore, both quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis are applied to the Priority Order, metropolitan area and other area are fairly evaluated the results for the Priority Order.
An Occupancy based O/D Data Construction Methodology for Expressway Network

The occupancy based O/D is essential for measuring efficiency of various transportation policies like HOV/HOT lane, ramp metering, and public parking station. There has been many studies on occupancy survey methodology and O/D estimation using TCS (Toll Collection System) data separately. The occupancy O/D estimation methodology using TCS data has not been attempted thus far. An overall process from data collection stage to the occupancy O/D estimation stage has been suggested. Field survey was performed at the northbound Seoul toll station of Gyeongbu Expressway by each 2 hours of AM peak, PM non-peak, PM peak, midnight periods on a day. The process of matching the TCS data and field survey data classified by tollbooth ID, car type/mode, and arrival time was also performed. One typical output of the results showed that the ratio of single occupancy vehicles bounding for Seoul during the AM peak amounted to 60%. With the key output of this study and the specific O/D estimation methodology suggested, the whole centroid-to-centroid occupancy O/D of the country could be available, and then various applications in which the occupancy information is required could be possible.
Modeling Traffic Accident Characteristics and Severity Related to Drinking-Driving

Traffic accidents are caused by several factors such as drivers, vehicles, and road environment. It is necessary to investigate and analyze them in advance to prevent similar and repetitive traffic accidents. Especially, the human factor is most significant element and traffic accidents by drinking-driving caused from human factor have become social problem to be paid attention to. The study analyzes traffic accidents resulting from drinking-driving and the effects of driver's attributes and environmental factors on them. The study is composed as two parts. First, the log-linear model is applied to analyze that accidents by drinking or non-drinking driving associate with road geometry, weather condition and personal characteristics. Probability is tested for drinking-driving accidents relative to non-drinking drive accidents. The study analyzes probability differences between genders, between ages, and between kinds of vehicles through odds multipliers. Second, traffic accidents related to drinking are classified into property damage, minor injury, heavy injury, and death according to their severity. Heavy injury is more serious than minor one and death is more serious than heavy injury. The ordinal regression models are established to find effecting factors on traffic accident severity.
The Experimental Study on the Transient Brake Time of Vehicles by Road Pavement and Friction Coefficient

When a car accident occurs, people who had an accident are not free from civil and criminal issues so that the accident investigator should reenact and analyze the accident situation accurately. In addition, the obtained documents through the analysis of such car accident occurrence and related factors have to be used to carry out the improvement of the areas that has numerous car accidents and complementary actions. The vehicle speed, accelerating force, braking power are currently known as the most affecting factors in accordance with many car accidents, traffic facilities, road design, etc. The vehicle's performance and rode friction coefficient road surface friction coefficient are affecting the most closely in this field. Especially, once the estimate of the speed of the accident moment relating to main eleven articles of Traffic Accident Exemption Law is very important and accuracy is required. However, currently the researches of these matters have not made exclusively yet in Korea. In this study by reflecting this current situation, until the sudden braking history is found from the car's sudden braking, it estimates accurately the transient brake time and rode friction coefficient by measuring a time of transient brake time through the precision speed detector (Vericom VC2000PC). The analysis of the experimental results calculated the transient brake time and friction coefficient to fit into the purpose of this study in the basis of different kind of various special purpose asphalt pavement and slip-prevention pavement and provided the fundamental data.
A Route Choice Model with Considering Fuel Cost by Travel Distance

In this study, the value of travel time was estimated with reflecting the fuel cost according to travel distance. The main objective of this study is whether the addition of the fuel cost as a factor for route choice behavior is appropriate or not, through the stated preference survey. The route choice model was developed using SP survey technique with the consideration of level difference and the value of travel time, toll and fuel costs. Consequently, the fuel cost is identified as a main factor like travel time and toll cost in choosing routes from drivers' viewpoints. Nevertheless, since toll costs are recognized as out-of-pocket expenses whereas fuel costs as periodical expenses, it seems drivers are more sensitive to toll than fuel costs.
A Study of Impact Factors and Barrier Height of Compact Car Road for Decision of Barrier Type

In this study, Impact factors are represented and barrier height of compact car road of safety barrier is suggested through the investigation of applying problems of existed standard of general car road. For this, traffic accidents analysis is performed and based on the analysis, impact vehicle weight, impact Angle, crash velocity, and barrier height are investigated. For the decision of impact angle, analysis is carried out by comparison of RISER and 2-lines expressway accidents data. Through this, higher-impact angle is suggested. Vehicle weight data of sub-compact car, small vehicle, medium and large vehicle, SUV, small truck is surveyed and analyzed. Based on the accident accumulation rate, regression analysis of vehicle weight impact and impact velocity is performed. Also, based on the cumulative rate of vehicle weight on expressways near Seoul, barrier height of compact car road is calculated. It is noted that the results of this study will be contributed to the decision of barrier type.
Integrated Information System for Environmental and Economic Evaluation

Recent years, the construction projects of a world-wide have changed toward integrated evaluation considering all environmental and economic aspect for ecological construction.. The object of this study is to suggest the method and system for integrated analysis VE/LCC and LCA. In order to integrate and analyze environmental and economic aspects of alternative design elements, decision maker should handle simultaneously much information such as cost, document and drawing. This study presents applicative methods of WBS for integrated management of these information. Also, this study presents a decision support system that can manage DB easily by using VE, LCC and LCA analysis module separately.
A Case Study on Penetrating Hard Rock with Alternative Methods of Shield TBM for Weathered Layer in Subway Construction

Recently, the Shield TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) construction method is used gradually to increase at the Tunnel Constructin site. However the design and application of the Shield TBM were carried out without sufficient investigation of the ground conditions in the construction site. Due to insufficient understanding to the corresponding equipment is frequently occurring unexpected construction cost and extension of a construction period. The most suitable alternative construction method was determined by analyzing tunneling rate, duration, construction cost of shield machine and tunneling data of alternative method. The result of the case study is suggested as follows. First, the accurate soil exploration on the construction site should be preceded to prevent from tunneling stoppage and schedule delay. Second, the most suitable selection of the shield machine to the ground conditions of the construction site should be executed based on the investigation. Third, the best alternative method for boring of hard rock section is 'hard rock blasting after open cut and cover method'.
A GIS-Based Planning Methodology to Determine the Haul Route Layout in Complex Construction Projects

The layout of haul routes within a construction site of large complex projects needs to be carefully determined as the productivity of earthwork activity heavily depends on the efficiency of the layout and the routes are not likely to change once they are settled. This paper aims to provide a construction planner with a reliable framework to create an efficient layout of haul routes within a large complex construction site. To construct the framework, five factors affecting haul route layout and the productivity of earthwork activity are described along with the associated rules of thumb recommended by design and field experts. In addition, a methodology based on spatial analysis using raster format in GIS is proposed to further increase haul route efficiency. The proposed planning framework enables a construction planner to easily find a more reliable route layout by thoroughly considering the key factors prior to setting up an earthmoving plan.
A Study on Relationship between Business Strategies and Core Competency in Construction Company

Recently, as the construction industry trend is changed to the market orientation which focuses on the autonomy and competition, the most construction companies try to adapt the new environment. Thus, this study analyzes the correlations of business strategy and core competency taken by the construction company to survive from the rapidly changing environment between the growth rate and rate of return of the company. Throughout the existing researches and theoretical studies, a business strategy and core competency of the construction company is drawn, and based on this, this study surveyed 746 construction companies. The results of the survey showed that the business strategy has any relationship with growth rate and rate of return and the core competency of the construction company has no relationship with rate of return either, while the core competency shows the relationship with the growth rate. Thus, it is analyzed that the construction company which has higher growth rate also has the high core competency level.
Study on the Improvement of Proposal Works for PPP Project: Focused on Operation and Maintenance Cost

As the national competitive power indicator, the infrastructures have been constructed with government's SOC budgets. However, even SOC budget is decreased, Public-Private Partnership Project (PPP project) has been introduced to solve demands on extending infrastructures, and among PPP projects, road projects take high portions. This study analyzes the operation & management item of financial model which is connected to the O&M cost and project proposal of previously proposed road project and analyzes the Korea Expressway Co.,'s project cost items and O&M tasks to reflect the characteristics of road projects. Based on results, this study suggests necessity of the O&M cost breakdown structure and the cost calculation standard on each cost item. Also, for the existing task execution tools, O&M cost calculation tool and finance analysis task tool will be integrated, and the system is suggested web-based system. Thus, it is expected that it contributes to the securing overall business values on PPP project and expending profit-base infrastructures.
A Study on a Measure of Asset Management Information Systems for Highway Transportation Facilities using AHP

We are developing asset management information systems to introduce the preventive/proactive approach at operation and management (O&M) of infrastructures. The objective of this study is to explore the future direction for development and operation of asset management information systems. So, we developed the success model and selected the evaluation criteria for analyzing user satisfaction to assess the expected performance of asset management information systems and the degree of impact on asset management functions to operation and management of highway transportation facilities. We estimated the relative importance weight according to the selected evaluation criteria through AHP analysis. We verified the logical consistency of the importance weight and exclude biased outlier from importance weight group using the concept of the Compatibility.
A Study on Improvement Plan of Guidance System of Namsan Park for Easy Wayfinding

Namsan in Seoul is major tourist attraction. However, despite of the proximity of the location to the center of the city, Namsan is not good for visitors for uncomfortable accessibility. This study proposed improvements of guidance system for easily access. Sign system and pedestrian circulation system were analyzed from the nearest public transportation around the park to where the entry of Namsan park. At first, we surveyed installation and type of sign system by field research and pedestrian way accessing to Namsan park by behavior survey. Through the analysis of current guidance system, this study suggests ways to improve following as; the reclassification of functions and types, sign installation planning and extracting main pedestrian circulation for easy access. Improved guidance system can ameliorate accessibility to Namsan and encourage greater use as the representative park of Seoul.
A Study on the Current Status and System of the Elderly Medical and Welfare Facilities with the Subjects in Busan

This is the study on the current status and system of the elderly medical and welfare facilities with the subjects in Busan. I investigated the problems related to those by analysing the current status and implementing a survey and then suggested a new facility system as a salvation. At present, the elderly medical and welfare facilities can not receive variety of inmates and also they are operated separatedly so the elderly is not able to receive special treatment and nursing at the same time in one facility. Some nursing facilities can give special treatment by connecting specific hospital when it is necessary, but the connection is not activated than our expectancy at the present. On the base of these problems, this study suggested 'one-stop service system' that can afford to give nursing and special treatment in a place ranging wider areas as the solution. The five types of facility system by integrating the results of survey are as followings. 1) Free special nursing facility + The geriatric hospital. 2) The profit special nursing facility + The geriatric hospital. 3) The geriatric hospital + The hospital rooms with silver town residence type. 4) The actual expense special nursing facility + The geriatric hospital + The hospital rooms with silver town residence type. 5) The geriatric hospital + The residential welfare service. It seems that the preparation for the elderly is urgent when considering the facilities related to those are not special any more because every one is supposed to use them some day. The kinds and the degree of elderly's diseases will be more duplicated and significant afterwards. Therefore it is expected that more various and specialized facilities are to be required.
Analyzing the Relationship between Environmental Consciousness and Railway Choice Behavior

The purpose of this research is to clarify the relation between environmental consciousness and railway usage behavior. Author would locate this research on position of basic survey to promote railway use according to Low Carbon Green Growth policy in Korea. In this research, we would perform descriptive analysis using data of research on the actual condition of railway use in 2008, Daegu, and describe its relationship. In addition, we would suggest some idea about policy which can promote railway use. The order of railway choice behavior noticed in clustering of environmental consciousness was cooperative behavior type, middle type and non-cooperative behavior type. It suggests that environmental consciousness has effect on transportation choice behavior. Specially, railway improvement isn't enough to promote railway use. And, it is advisable to carry out the improvement in such a way that it may encourage the nation to move from the current environmental consciousness stage to cooperative behavior. Moreover, we assumed Binary Probit(BP) model using SP data of time or condition of transportation expense compared with passenger car and bus. As the results, modified likelihood ratio of two BP models is favorable variables. And it occurred that mode was transferred from passenger car to railway when it showed higher social environment consciousness and low selfish environment consciousness, because t-statistic which represents selfish environment consciousness showed significance in 95% confidence level. That is, it can be described that environment consciousness affect on the intention of railway use.
