Fuel Consumption Estimation Models for Heavy Freight Vehicles on Various Operating Speeds

It is common that basic unit and model of fuel consumption have been used to evaluate effectiveness analysis of transportation infrastructure investment programs. However they could not reflect vehicle characteristics such as loading capacity and types of heavy vehicles. For these reasons, this study reviews convention fuel consumption model which is widely used and conducts a field experiment for 5 classes of heavy vehicles. To develop the fuel consumption quadratic model the field data are used and we develop each model by classes, and then compare with convention fuel consumption model. As a result, between convention and suggested model, there are considerable differences, which have a similar pattern between an 11-ton cargo of convention model and a 25-ton cargo type dump truck of the suggested model. Likewise we identify that there is an approximately 26% gap between convention model result and the result which is calculated a weighted average by registered number of heavy vehicles based on 5 types of fuel consumption model suggested in this study. This result implies that convention fuel assumption model has a realistic limitation.
Estimation of Parking Lot Planning and, Suggestion of Parking Planning Methods Considering Vehicle Types

At the present, planning and installation of parking space sections and lane width are implemented in accordance with the installation standard and parking lot structure by the enforcement regulations of the Parking Act. While large and RV (Recreational Vehicle) vehicles have increased in number recently, parking is complex with improper installation standards. It causes serious problems, including vehicle vandalism, increased civil complaints, travel inconveniences for parking lot users, management and maintenance issues for parking lots, and so forth. The study, therefore, determined that the practical and appropriate realignment of parking unit adjustment and lane width regulations are essential. The study conducted prior review on domestic parking sections and change cases of composition by vehicle types, including the component ratio of domestic and foreign vehicles, width of vehicle by types in order to examine the parking problems that account for a increasing social issues, and provided parking plan methods by types of vehicle, as well as reform and reaction plans for parking unit adjustment and lane width considering security and smooth traffic flow. After comparing and analyzing between estimated installation of parking space and lane width and internal and external cases, the study suggests the improvement that considers expenses and convenience of a driver. Also, it shows installation of parking space that considers traffic safety, improvement of lane width, and parking way depends on vehicle types. By providing estimation for parking planning and parking planning methods that secure safe and smooth traffic flow within a parking lot, the study will contribute to the development of improved alternatives for cost-effective traffic safety and set-up structure, including installation standards of parking lots.
A Study on Suitability of the USN-Based Portable Reference Equipment for ITS Systems Performance Evaluation

The existing portable reference equipment for ITS systems performance evaluation has several limitations. First, it is difficult to set up and operate the equipment in the road section with the shoulder width equal to or smaller than 1.5m. Secondly, the crash with a car could lead to severe accident since it is big and heavy. Lastly, it cannot collect data from multiple lanes at a time. In this research the characteristics of the USN-based portable reference equipment developed to overcome shortcomings of the existing portable reference equipment were analyzed qualitatively and its performance level was evaluated through the field test. Consequently, the USN-based portable reference equipment turned out to overcome the operational shortcomings and satisfy the performance level required for the portable reference equipment.
A Study on the Construction Demand for Network of Metro Railroad in Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam Area - In the place of National Road No.7 -

Preliminary feasibility study on Busan metro line #1 in Yangsan line (Nopo-Bukjeong) depending on active volume of mass transportation between Yangsan city and Busan city was conducted. As the study concluded that it's valid, the necessity to establish the metro railroad network connecting to Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongnam Province is demanded to improve the transportation issues in Ungsang area vulnerable to metro service and to drive the balanced development between metropolitan cities. In addition, the volume of transportation depending on methods in target areas and road traffic assignment are surveyed to put a stress on the necessity to establish the metro railroad network. As the demand of transportation for alternative lines is predicted, the budget and benefits for construction for each alternative line set for the rough economic analysis depending on traffic volume for each method and traffic assignment results. The total project budget necessary for construction of proposal line #1 set as effective one among target three lines in this project is calculated in 794.32 billion won. Construction accounts for the most expensive in expenses for project and contingency allowances, purchases for vehicles and collateral expense are followed in orders. However, compensation for lands is not counted. In particular, according to economic analysis in proposal #1, ratio of benefit/cost (B/C) is 0.584, net present value (NPV) is -217.47 billion won, the internal rate of return (IRR) is analyzed in 0.604 %. At the current stage, it is not economically feasible, but the B/C is 0.737 in long-term upon construction of Yangsan line between Wolpheong and Yongdang which is proposal line #3. Therefore, when Busan metro basic plan is reorganized to aim the benefit of residents in Ungsang area vulnerable to the metro service, we think it must be necessary to establish the metro railroad network connecting to Busan-Yangsan-Ulsan which is proposal line #2 by extending the existing Sinjeong line and including this task line in high-ranked plan related to metro railroad.
Study for the Homogeneity of Freeway Free-Flow Speed under the State of LOS-A Low Density

Freeway FFS (Free-Flow Speed) under the state of LOS (Level of Service) A has been regarded as a homogeneous state to all levels of traffic volume. The features of low-density FFS is served as the basic data for a decision on limited maximal speed, accident analysis, simulation modeling etc. A few researches for the macroscopic characteristics of design and operation speed have been reported, and any study for the microscopic features of freeway free-flow speed under the state of low density has not been done. Therefore, the characteristics of low-density FFS according to the level of traffic volume (1-3 veh/30 sec) and daily hour periods (0-5, 6-8, 9-11, 12-19, 20-23) is microscopically analyzed in this study with huge volume and speed data. It was found that speed distributions are changed and show different behaviors under the conditions of traffic volume levels and daily time periods. V85s (85th percentile speed) at early morning and night periods decrease when levels of traffic volume increase, whereas V85s at day time do not show considerable differences. Especially, FFSs of levels of traffic volume at early morning and night periods, despite low density, is analyzed as heterogeneity, but homogeneity at day time.
Development of Two-lane Highway Vehicle Model Based on Discrete Time and Space

Two-lane and two-way traffic flow shows various dynamic relationships according to the behaviors of low-speed vehicle and overtaking. And it is essential to develop a vehicle model which simultaneously explains the behaviors of low-speed vehicle and overtaking using opposite lane in order to microscopically analyze various two-lane and two-way traffic flows by traffic flow simulation. In Korea, some studies for car-following and lane-changing models for freeway or signalized road have been reported, but few researches for the development of vehicle model for two-lane and two-way highway have been done. Hence, a microscopic two-lane and two-way vehicle model was, in this study, developed with the consideration of overtaking process and is based on CA (Cellular Automata) which is one of discrete time-space models. The developed model is parallel combined with an adjusted CA car-following model and an overtaking model. The results of experimental simulation showed that the car-following model explained the various macroscopic relationships of traffic flow and overtaking model reasonably generated the various behaviors of macroscopic traffic flows under the conditions of both opposite traffic flow and stochastic parameter to consider overtaking. The vehicle model presented in this study is expected to be used for the simulation of more various two-lane, two-way traffic flows.
A Study on Performance Criteria of Asphalt Pavements for Development of Performance-based Warranty Specification

Existing specifications of road pavement require contractors to meet only materials and construction conditions regardless of pavement life. There are limitation of developing road pavement technology and possibility causing dispute between ordering organization and contractor with this type of specification. Research efforts to introduce performance warranty contracting are in progress in the field of road pavement to improve the problems. The performance warranty contracting gives the contractors opportunity to select materials and construction methods as they like. But they should satisfy a certain level of performance during a given period. The performance indicator and threshold value of pavement which are main elements of the warranty specification should be defined first to introduce the performance warranty contracting successfully. In this study, the performance indicator, threshold value, and warranty duration of asphalt pavement were investigated by reviewing literatures on performance warranty contracting of some states of the US. Major distresses influencing the performance of the asphalt pavement were investigated at 24 national expressway lines and national highway lines in 16 regions, and the data were analyzed to be compared to the cases of the US. Development of rational performance warranty specification for domestic asphalt pavement is expected based on the research results.
A Study on the Performance Evaluation Method of Warm-mix Asphalt Mixture by the Analysis of Bonding Properties between Asphalt Binder and Aggregate

The public interest of global warming and energy shortage is gradually increased, and the related industries also have become interested in developing eco-friendly material and technology. Warm-mix asphalt (WMA) is a result of the developments to alleviate global warming and energy problems. This WMA is produced at lower temperatures than the temperature at which hot mix asphalt (HMA) is produced. Because most tests in Superpave are developed only for the performance and maintenance of HMA produced by hot temperatures, it is difficult for the tests to identify properly the material properties and then evaluate the performances between HMA and WMA. This study deals with the development of a new protocol to differentiate HMA and WMA performance, and especially the interfacial properties between asphalt and aggregate are targeted as the performance indicator; thus, an evaluation method and guideline are suggested. The concept and idea of the test method applied in this study were modified from the DSR moisture damage test protocol. In addition, TSR test was performed to affirm the relation between the asphalt-aggregate interface and the asphalt-aggregate mixture performances. The followings are the results of this study. Shear stress at 85% linear visco-elastic complex modulus (LVE
) can be a better parameter than LVE
, which can assess the interfacial or bonding performance between asphalt and aggregate. Moreover, measuring the bonding performance in thinner film thicknesses will be a better way to evaluate the real and field situation between asphalt and aggregate. The interfacial properties' criteria to apply the newly developed test and parameter should be developed, after the asphalt mixture criteria relating to the interfacial properties are completed.
The Fundamental Research on Lifting-Work for Excavator Safety Management

Though an excavator is classified as an equipment utilizing a shovel in earthworks, it has been frequently used in lifting work. In this view, lifting capacity is classified as the main functions of the excavator. Thus, its accurate functions need to be provided. However, in domestic conditions, the necessity for the functions of lifting capacity are not perceived. This study shows 1) Many researches about lifting-work of excavators abroad are used as basic data necessary for domestic introduction. 2) For domestic excavators without the information of lifting-work, methodologies of lifting-work available are suggested and reviewed. 3)Lifting zones are divided into safety and caution lifting zones. The information on lifting capacity and lifting zones will be able to used as objective and substantive bases to operational planning and safety management.
A Study for Revitalization of Jang-Tteul Traditional Market in Jeung Pyeong-Gun

Due to emergence of large discount mart and on-line shopping, and the resulting shrinkage of market share, traditional market that is typically having operational disadvantages is facing a predicament. However, considering the total sales volume and the consumer traffic, it is true that traditional market still plays an important role. In this context, traditional market should be vitalized through an improved management system as well as restructuring, and seek a balanced growth in the distribution industry. In order to provide competitiveness to the local traditional market of Jeung-Pyung Province and to vitalize the local economy, an analysis was preformed for the local market environment, and the vitalization plans, which can be referenced in determining the local economic policies, are suggested in this paper.
Road Construction Cost Estimation Model in the Planning Phase Using Artificial Neural Network

Construction cost estimation in planning phase which calculates the cost for performing construction tasks is used for various ways. Meanwhile, in the case of road construction, the existing cost estimating method in early phase based on numerical mean value of the past is not accurate to be used. This paper propose neural network model for estimating road construction cost in planning phase to solve the limit of current cost estimating method. The model was designed using past road construction bidding records, and variables of model were optimized through trial and error. The estimation result of the model was compared with regression analysis and government's standard and it was verified that the model is better in accuracy. It is expected that the proposed model will be used for road cost estimation in planning phase.
A Study on Advance Rate under the Operating Conditions of EPB Shield TBM Based on TBM Operation Data

TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) tunnel should be carry out with the adopted machine until the end of excavation because of impossibility of replacement or modification of machine. Observation of the face of the tunnel is difficult, especially in EPB(Earth Pressure Balance) shield TBM, predict changes in the ground condition with analyzing data, collected during the excavation, and it should be reflected in construction. Until recently, subjects of studies on TBM are mainly the determination of machine and the development of advance rate prediction model, according to the characteristics of ground which is the target of excavation. However, study focused on the estimation of ground conditions and the improvement in operational methods using excavation data of TBM equipment, the principal of the excavation, has been done not so much. This study examine the variances in advance rate depending on changes in operating conditions and evaluate the optimal operating conditions of adopt machine, using working data obtained from EPB shield TBM project. The result of this study is suggested as follows. First, cutter head RPM and total thrust force are biggest influences on advance rate, Second, it is recommended for proper advance rate that total thrust force is controlled while optimum cutter head RPM is kept, Third, according to the increasing trend of total thrust force, the changes in ground conditions can be predicted, the appropriate operating conditions can be determined.
Transformation of Text Contents of Engineering Documents into an XML Document by using a Technique of Document Structure Extraction

This paper proposes a method for transforming unstructured text contents of engineering documents, which have complex hierarchical structure of subtitles with various heading symbols, into a semi-structured XML document according to the hierarchical subtitle structure. In order to extract the hierarchical structure from plain text information, this study employed a method of document structure extraction which is an analysis technique of the document structure. In addition, a method for processing enumerative text contents was developed to increase overall accuracy during extraction of the subtitles and construction of a hierarchical subtitle structure. An application module was developed based on the proposed method, and the performance of the module was evaluated with 40 test documents containing structural calculation records of bridges. The first test group of 20 documents related to the superstructure of steel girder bridges as applied in a previous study and they were used to verify the enhanced performance of the proposed method. The test results show that the new module guarantees an increase in accuracy and reliability in comparison with the test results of the previous study. The remaining 20 test documents were used to evaluate the applicability of the method. The final mean value of accuracy exceeded 99%, and the standard deviation was 1.52. The final results demonstrate that the proposed method can be applied to diverse heading symbols in various types of engineering documents to represent the hierarchical subtitle structure in a semi-structured XML document.
A Study on Building Maintenance Institutionalization by Comparing with the Foreign Countries' Cases

Under the 'Sustainability Paradigm', the building maintenance system is getting more important because more efficient maintenance means more sustainable building. This paper aims at improving present building maintenance system by comparing with the foreign developed countries' systems. The comparing countries are selected according to the level of building maintenance. As the results, 4 countries including USA, England, Germany, and Japan become the benchmark. The results show that building maintenance regulations are various by social, economic, and cultural characteristics. In addition, though building maintenance policy must be established, first of all, the related regulations and policy targets are prepared before the enforcement of maintenance regulation. The results provide some policy implications: 1. Building maintenance must be controled under the condition that a building can guarantee the safety of people and function of it. 2. Building maintenance system should contribute to the desirable urban environment and architectural culture.
Optimization of Ballast Depth of Ballasted Track Bridges to Improve Ride Comfort

The ballast abrasion occurs on the ballasted track upon bridges more than soil roadbed because the track vibration occurs a lot in the ballasted track upon bridges due to girder vibration when a train's weight is loaded onto track even though the identical ballast is used. The phenomena of mud pumping especially, which occurs when drainage is not properly secured for heavy rain, leads to the increase of maintenance work load and the decline of ride comfort. The ballast thickness range in domestic railroad construction rule is uniformly set up according to the design speed of railroad and passing tonnage of train without considering field conditions which is considered in foreign railroad companies. The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of vibration decrease by measuring the acceleration, displacement and ride comfort of ballasted track with the change of ballast thickness on the ballast tracked bridges and to suggest the optimal height of ballast on the Yocheon Bridge built for the test in Honam Line.
