It is usually not an easy task to counter-measure on time and appropriately when confronting with troubles in mechanized tunnelling job-sites because of the limitation of available spaces to perform those actions with the existence of disk cutter, cutter head, chamber and other various apparatus in Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). So, it is important to predict the ground condition ahead of a tunnel face during tunnel excavation. Efforts have been made to utilize geophysical methods such as elastic wave survey, electromagnetic wave survey, electrical resistivity survey, etc for predicting the ground condition ahead of the TBM tunnel face. Each prediction method among these geophysical methods has its own advantage and disadvantage. Therefore, it might be needed to apply several geophysical methods rather than just one to predict the ground condition ahead of the tunnel face in the complex and/or mixed grounds since those methods will compensate among others. The problem is that each prediction method will give us different answer on the predicted ground condition; how to combine different solutions into a most reasonable and representative predicted value might be important. Therefore, in this study, we proposed a methodology how to systematically combine each prediction method utilizing probabilistic analysis as well as analytic hierarchy process. The proposed methods is applied to a virtual job site to confirm the applicability of the model to predict the ground condition ahead of the tunnel face in the mechanized tunnelling.

Jun, Gy-Chan ; Kim, Dong-Hyun ;
Journal of Korean Tunnelling and Underground Space Association, volume 18, issue 3, 2016, Pages 273~282
DOI : 10.9711/KTAJ.2016.18.3.273
This study estimates tunnel face pressure through existing 8 analytical equations and 3D numerical analysis, and compares and examines it. In general, the estimating tunnel face pressure of domestic shield TBM has been examined by a method according to analytical equation and empirical method, but numerical analysis is combined in a section passing complicated stratigraphic condition and special soil condition. Therefore, the researcher is to find a reliable method to examine of tunnel face pressure by confirming a correlation between tunnel face pressure estimated by equation and tunnel face pressure estimated by numerical analysis program. When tunnel face pressure is estimated, both analytical equation and numerical analysis were identically examined in soil conditions such as sandy soil and cohesive soil. In addition, existing analytical equation is used as equation, and 3D analysis copying construction process and shield tunnel as numerical analysis.

Recent, the construction of the multi-purpose double-deck tunnel is required to solve the flood protection and congested area at urban city. The multi-purpose double-deck tunnel is desperately needed for the introduction of efficient utilization of underground space in addition to the main feature of road capabilities. A basic review was performed for site selection to consider the control capability and features of road tunnel at the same time, and the processable flow in accordance with tunnels cross section of double deck tunnel. Site Selection Criteria for multi-purpose use of the double-deck tunnel has been proposed through the site selection criteria by use of the tunnels review. Also the estimation processable flow was performed to review the versatility of double-deck tunnel due to design of tunnel cross-section. Site Selection of double-deck tunnel from this study can be seen the need for a complex consideration through a variety of analyzes.
A fundamental study on the ventilation analysis method for the network-type tunnel - focused on the none hardy-cross method

Journal of Korean Tunnelling and Underground Space Association, volume 18, issue 3, 2016, Pages 291~303

Recently, various forms of diverging sections in tunnels have been designed as the demand for underground passageway in urban areas increases. Therefore, the complexity of the ventilation system in tunnels with diverging sections requires a ventilation analysis method different from the conventional method for the straight tunnels. None of the domestic and foreign tunnel ventilation design standards specifies the method for the ventilation network analysis, and the numerical analysis methods have been most widely used. This paper aims at reviewing the ventilation network analytical method applicable as the design standard. The proposed method is based on the characteristic equations rather than the numerical analysis. Thanks to the advantages of easy application, the Hardy-Cross method has been widely applied in the fields of mine ventilation and tunnel ventilation. However, limitations with the cutting errors in the Taylor series expansion and the convergence problem mainly caused by the mesh selection algorithm have been reported. Therefore, this paper examines the applicability of the ventilation analysis method for network-type tunnels with the gradient method that can analyze flow rate and pressure simultaneously without the configuration of mesh. A simple ventilation analysis method for network-type tunnels is proposed.

This study is to evaluate the uncertainty of the soil parameters associated with the Gap parameter during shield TBM tunnel excavation of
International Airport Terminal 2 connecting railway construction basic design. And This study is to evaluate the adequacy of the shield TBM design by performing a reliability analysis of the Surface settlement. In addition, By analyzing the reliability indices of the design constants and Sensitivity probability of failure to be used in designing an integer parameter Gap, and By evaluating the design constants of a great influence on the surface subsidence, it was to provide a basis for carrying out an optimum design.

Journal of Korean Tunnelling and Underground Space Association, volume 18, issue 3, 2016, Pages 319~329

Underground structures such as subsea tunnel having large section should be stable against seismic loads. In general, underground structures show more stable behavior due to the limited dynamic motion and force, and considerable energy dissipation; however, severe damage was reported from recent earthquakes. Therefore, more sophisticated and analytic approach is required to investigate the seismic response of underground structure like subsea tunnel. In this study, seismic analysis of virtual Honam-Jeju subsea tunnel are performed. Consequently, stresses and forces of tunnel lining increased at fractured and/or weak rock zones. Stresses and forces of tunnel lining also increased at large section under axially deformed condition; however, decrease under transversely deformed condition.

Journal of Korean Tunnelling and Underground Space Association, volume 18, issue 3, 2016, Pages 331~339

Real time location (RTL) system which can control the safety of laborers in the underground space is developed in this study. This innovative system can monitor the location and history of movement of multiple laborers in real time. To accommodate constrains of the underground space, the system is portable and composed with low-battery mode. Since conventional method to detect the location of laborer with radio signal strength indicator (RSSI) contains high errors, new measurement system using accelerometers and correction method are suggested in this study. Field test is performed to validate the developed system. The error for moving laborer was 0.4 m and for non-moving laborers was 0.2 m. Thus, it is found that the new RTL system can be used to monitor the location of laborers in the underground construction space.
