Model to Predict Non-Homogeneous Soil Temperature Variation Influenced by Solar Irradiation

This study is to develop a model to predict the soil temperature variation in Korea Institute of Energy Research using its thermal properties, such as thermal conductivity and diffusivity. Soil depth temperature variation is very important in the design of a proper Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) system. This is because the size of the borehole depends on the soil temperature distribution, and this can decrease GSHP system cost. If the thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity are known, the soil temperature can be predicted by either the Krarti equation or the Spitler equation. Then a comparison with the Krarti equation and Spitler equation data with the real measured data can be performed. Also, the thermal properties can be reasonably approximated by performing a fit of the Krarti and Spitler equations with measured temperature data. This was done and, as a result, the Krarti equation and Spitler equation predicted values very close to the measured data. Although there is about a
difference between the deep subsurface prediction (16m - 60m), with this equation, were expected to have model this Non-Homogeneous Soil Temperature phenomenon properly. So, it has been shown that a prediction of non-homogeneous soil temperature variation influenced by solar radiation can be achieved with a model.
Evaluation on the Cooling Performance of Geothermal-energy Using Heat Pump System in Mixed-use Residential Building

Geothermal-energy has been getting popular as a natural energy source for green buildings these days. Public building with gross area more than
, planned after March, 2005, should spend about 5% of total building cost for equipment run by natural energy source (e.g. geothermal, solar heat, solar power, etc) according to renewable energy promotion law in Korea. As a result geothermal-energy using heat pump system is emerging as a effective alternative for realistic and economic plan although design guidelines and construction code for the system is in progress and technical data is far from sufficient. The quantitative analysis on the performance of geothermal-energy using heat pump system is insufficient for appropriate design of it. In this paper, cooling performance of geothermal-energy using heat pump system of residential and retail etc. mixed-use building has been analyzed on the basis of temperature comparison between inlet and outlet of heat exchangers of the operating system. Additionally, dry-bulb temperature and relative humidity have been measured and analyzed together as an index of indoor thermal environment.
Novel AFD method of islanding detection with a periodic zero current for improving on islanding detection for grid-connected Photovoltaic inverters

This paper proposes a novel active frequency drift (AFD) method for the islanding prevention of grid-connected photovoltaic inverter. To detect the islanding phenomenon of grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) inverters concerning about the safety hazards and the damage to other electric equipments, many kinds of anti-islanding methods have been presented. Among them, AFD method using chopping fraction enables the islanding detection to drift up (or down) the frequency of the voltage during the islanding situation. In this paper, injecting the periodic zero current into the basic AFD method is proposed. This proposed method shows the analytical design value of cf to meet the test procedure of IEEE Std. 1547 with various load conditions. Detection of islanding is verified using simulation tool PSIM.
Demonstration of 10kw Wind Turbine System at the King Sejong Station

10kW wind turbine has been successfully commissioned at the King Sejong station in April, 2006. The wind turbine installed is a part of the R&D program for developing a solid wind/diesel hybrid power control system for a remote area such as Antarctica. At the same time, the current research aims to develop an anti-icing and de-icing technologies for a small wind turbine rated under 50kW. Since its commissioning, the turbine has generated about 500kWh for 47days without any system faults. Although sufficient data have not been obtained yet, any trouble has not occurred in the wind/diesel hybrid system based on the current analysis. Concerning on the environmental impact by the wind turbine operation, the turbine is installed within the station boundary in order to meet the Madrid protocol. Therefore, wind turbine operation meets the international requirements for preservation of antarctic ecosystem.

The national goal of wind energy dissemination has to be determined rationally based on technically available wind resource potential. For an accurate and scientific estimation of wind resource potential, a wind map is requisite. This paper introduces the national wind map of Korea established by numerical wind simulation. Therefore, quantification of national wind resource potential is now possible and is anticipating to be used as a core index for policy and strategy building of wind energy dissemination and technology development.
Study on the Performance Testing of the Closed Ice Thermal Energy Storage System using Screw Capsules

The decrease in the summer peak electric load in our country is very important. The government has arranged and implemented a lot of support policies and statutes to decrease the peak electric load. And the ice thermal energy storage system is known as one of the alternatives. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the efficiency and thermal characteristics of the closed ice thermal energy storage system using screw capsules. The measured thermal energy storage density is about 18.4 USRT-h/m3 (=232.9 MJ/m3), which is higher than 13.0 USRT-h/m3 (=164.6 MJ/m3), a low criterion of normal performance. And The efficiency of the discharging process and the total energy utilization is 96.2% and 2028.4 kcal/kWh respectively.
Interaction of Multi Current Power Generation Blade

The current power generation is very suitable renewable energy for the application to Korean western and south coastal regions where characterized as having high current speed. Being different from tidal power generation that needs tremendous dam structure to preserve water, the current power generation utilizes the ocean current flow without damaging to estuary area and its environment. There are still many areas to understand the characteristics of current power generation for the actual field installation. As designing muti module with several rotors, the interaction between rotors will occur that would affect the efficiency and RPM of each rotor. In this study, the interactions caused by gaps between rotors in multi module are studied.

Thermodynamic Analysis of a Double-Effect Absorption Heating System Using Water-LiBr- LiSCN Solution As

In this paper, with water-LiBr-LiSCN mixture which utilizes solar energy as mid temperature range evaporator heat source, a thermodynamic analysis was performed to provide design data for a double-effect absorption heating system. A comparative study of the water-LiBr-LiSCN mixture against the water-LiBr pair was conducted by a computer simulation. The computer simulation is based on mass, material and heat balance equations for each part of the system. Coefficients of performance and flow ratios for effects of different operating temperatures are investigated. It is found that the heating COP is higher for the water-LiBr-LiSCN mixture than for the water-LiBr pair, and FR is lower for the former.
The State of the Art and Architectural Environmental Property Evaluation of Earth Construction Material

As a demand for sustainable development rises, the preference for earth house (earth construction) increases gradually. However, there are few data for predicting and evaluating the thermal environment and indoor air quality of earth house. Thus, this study aims to measure thermal properties(thermal conductivity, density and specific heat) and pollutants emission intensities(formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds) of current main earth construction materials and make a comparison between earth and cement construction materials. As results, quantitative thermal properties and pollutants emission intensities of current main earth construction materials are shown.
A study on the single-phase heat transfer in a counter-flow double-pipe heat exchanger by Wilson plot technique

An experimental study of a counterflow heat exchanger was performed. The heat exchanger had an effective heat transfer length of 1000mm and was operated in a counterflow arrangement with hot water(
) in the inner tube(copper tube,
) and cold water(
) in the annulus(copper tube,
). Overall heat transfer coefficients were calculated and heat transfer coefficients in the inner tube and the annulus were determined using Wilson plots. The inner Nusselt number was compared with that of Gnielinski's correlation and they agreed within
error. The trends were typical for a fluid-to-fluid heat exchanger with the overall heat transfer coefficient increasing with both inner and annulus flow rates. In the range of this experiment, Nusselt numbers for the inner tube flow were almost identical with those of the annulus flow at the same Reynolds number.

The Purpose of this study is to provide the basic data for energy conservation strategies of the multipurpose greenhouse which is appropriate to Jeju environmental circumstance. In this study, climatic analysis, field works, literature reviews and building load calculations were performed to identify solutions to design needs. As conceptual design strategies, various energy conservation strategies such as passive solar design, natural ventilation and high performance glazing system were examined and applied to design alternatives.
Analysis of Passive Cooling Effect of the Tree by Field Observations in the Summer

The tree is regarded as an sustainable architectural outdoor design element which reduce urban heat island effect by its solar shading and evapotranspiration. This study carried out field observations of measuring thermal environment of selected tree and its ambience to determine passive cooling effects. Results from the field observations are as below; Tree-shading effect to the thermal environment can not be properly evaluated by merely measuring air temperature differences between tree-shaded space and unshaded space for the maximum temperature difference is less than
. The differences of longwave radiation and shortwave radiation between tree-shaded space and unshaded space are measured. Shortwave radiation is considered as a main thermal comfort determining factor for the difference of the shortwave radiation is much bigger than that of longwave radiation. By thermal infrared image analysis, the surface temperature of the tree under strong solar radiation is measured same as ambient air temperature. By which the evapotranspiration is considered to retard tree surface temperature raising effectively.

This study describes thermal performance of heating and cooling demonstration system using ETSC(Evacuated tubular solar collector) installed at Seo-gu art center of Kwangju. For demonstration study, a reading room with about
was heated and cooled using that system. The demonstration system was consisted of ETSCs, storage tank, hot water supply tank, subsidiary boiler, and subsidiary tank. From January to March in 2006, demonstration test were performed with 4 control mode to find the optimum control condition for solar thermal system. After experiments and analysis, this study found that solar thermal system of control mode IV was corresponded to 78% for the hot water supply and 49% for space heating.
Experimental Study on the Thermal Behavior of Solar Space Heating & Hot Water System in Apartment

In this paper, an experiment was carried out to investigate the thermal behavior and performance on a solar space heating & hot water system in an apartment. Measurement was continued for 6 months between January 1st 2004 and June 31th 2004. The results show that there is no problem in control and operation in case of connection this system with conventional space heating and hot water system, and that the thermal performance of this system and indoor thermal environment is good.

For some time there has been the need to know new researches trend utilizing solar energy in various fields, particularly solar energy researchers and engineers. The aim of the review is to analyze the researches trend in solar energy field of Korea. The research trend was reviewed by data on the published papers of journal of the Korean solar energy society(KSES) between 2003 and 2005. The results of this overview are provided to be an effective data for the planning of development energy resources, especially in a toward new energy policy.
