Software Development on Power and Economic Analysis of Photovoltaic System for Building Application

The aim of this study is to develop the photovoltaic simulation program, called SimPV, which can Predict hourly based power generation of various PV modules and conduct an intensive economic analysis with Korean situation. To establish the reliability of the PV simulation results, we adopt the PV calculation algorithm of TRNSYS program of which verification has already well approved. Extensive database for hourly weather data of Korean 16 cities, engineering data for PV system and building load profiles are established. Case study on the 2.5kW roof integrated PV system and economic analysis are presented with the developed program.
Effect of Working Fluids on the Thermal Behavior of a Bi-directional Solar Thermal Diode

An experimental investigation has been carried out to study the effects of different working fluids on the behavior and thermal performance of a hi-directional thermodiode. The thermodiode was made up of two rectangular loops mounted between a collector plate and a radiator plate. Rotatable joints between the horizontal and inclined segments of the loops enable easy alteration of the direction of heat transfer. The energy crisis is culminating for the life of the fossil fuel in the future which is come to end at
years. Moreover above 90% of the energy in our country depend on importing and the crisis is more seγious than it of other countries. So architects devote low energy house research and it means underground space research have become public opinion. But there is not an accurate and utility method calculating the heating load of underground space. In this study it is proposed that the heating load is calculated by setting adiabatic thichness of soil and predicting underground temperature. The prediction of the underground temperature is calculated by the latitude, the level, the distance from sea, the condition of earth surface.
Aeroelastic Phenomena of a Wind Turbine Rotor Blade

Aeroelastic phenomena of a wind turbine include stall-induced vibrations and classical flutters. The classical flutter occurs due to coalescence between bending mode and torsion mode. It is typically the aeroelastic instability of an aircraft wing. Different from the classical flutter, the stall-induced vibration is the instability in lead-lag mode due to negative aerodynamic dampings. In the present study, the three degree of freedom aeroelastic model of a wind turbine blade is introduced to characterize and analyze its aeroelastic phenomena. The numerical results show that the aeroelastic stability of flap-lag motion is more unstable than that of flap-pitch motion and the aeroelastic characteristics of lead-lag motion can become unstable as wind speed increases.

The Effects of Design Parameters for Small Scale Hydro Power Plant with Rainfall Condation

The effects of design parameters for small scale hydro power(SSHP) plants due to rainfall condition have been studied. The model to predict hydrologic performance for SSHP plants is used in this study. The results from analysis for rainfall conditions based on Weibull distribution show that the capacity and load factor of SSHP site had large difference between the variation of shape and scale parameter. Especially, the hydrologic performance of SSHP site due to variation of shape parameter varied more sensitive than the case of variation of scale parameter. And also, the methodology represented in this study can be used to decide the primary design specifications of SSHP sites.
A Survey of Direct Normal Insolation Resources in Korea (Focused on All days Analysis)

Since the direct normal insolation is a main factor for designing any solar thermal power system, it is necessary to evaluate its characteristics all over the country. We have begun collecting direct normal insolation data since December 1992 at 16 different locations and considerable effort has been made for constructing a standard value from measured data at each station. KIER(Korea Institute of Energy Research)'s new data will be extensively used by solar thermal concentrating system users or designers as well as by research institutes. From the results, we can conclude that 1) Yearly mean

The expectation of future climate change in relation to buildings and renewable energy

According to the Fourth Assessment Report of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC) Working Group III, climate change is already in progress around the world, and it is necessary to execute mitigation in order to minimize adverse impacts. This paper suggests future climate change needs, employing IPCC Special Report on Emissions Scenarios(SRES) to predict temperature rises over the next 100 years. This information can be used to develop sustainable architecture applications for energy efficient buildings and renewable energy. Such climate changes could also affected the resent supplies of renewable energy sources. This paper discusses one recent Fourth Assessment Report of IPPC (Mitigation of Climate Change) and the Hadley Centre climate simulation of relevant data series for South Korea.
Dynamic Analysis of Cool Thermal Storage Air Conditioning System

In this study, dynamic characteristics analysis of AC system is investigated using a cool thermal storage system. A analysing program for cool thermal storage AC system is developed. The performances are studied by several variables and dynamic characteristics. Comparing the result at conventional operation condition with that at the condition using ice storage system, this study showed the effects of the sub cooled degree, superheated degree, efficiency of compressor and evaporating temperature. At the condition using thermal storage system, the thermal storage process was operated during midnight being not needed the cooling of the AC unit through the continuous running of the condenser. The refrigerant was sub-cooled using stored energy after being discharged from the air source condenser during the daytime. The COP was increased owing to the sub-cooling of refrigerant during daytime, thus the power consumption was effectively decreased.
Experimental Study on the Thermal Performance of Passive Solar Trombe Wall System

Thermal performance of passive solar Trombe wall system which is applied on the south wall of KIER Zero energy Solar House has been monitored for 6 months of heating season. Based upon the long-term measurement results, extensive statistical analysis was conducted to investigate temperature profiler and heat flow pattern in Trombe wall system under actual operating condition. Heat flow characteristics depending on the time variation of day and month was clearly revealed. Heat gain and loss on the inner surface of the Trombe wall was calculated base upon measured temperature data. Those results would be utilized to improve the efficiency of new type solar storage wall system.
Characteristics of Lightning Occurred over Jeju Island for 2004-2006 and an Effect of Lightning on Wind Turbine Generator System

This paper presents the characteristics of lightning pver Jeju island and a case of emergency stop of a wind turbine due to lightning. Using the IMPACT ESP sensor to detect lightning, the data on lightning frequency, lightning strength, regional lightning event were obtained and analyzed in detail. The measurement period was for 3 years from 2004 to 2006. As a result, lightning occulted the most frequently in July and August. As for lightning strength, lightning with grades -4 to -6 and +3 to +5 occur ed more frequently. The eastern part of Jeju island had much more lightning frequency compared with the western part of it. Lightning with high grade occurred mainly in offshore site and the coastal region. Furthermore, the data on wind turbine stop caused by lightning was analyzed. Although wind turbine lightning damage was not much in this study, the investigation on lightning damage or lightning faults to a wind turbine should be conducted in Korea to increase availability of wind turbine.
