Validation study of the NCAR reanalysis data for a offshore wind energy prediction

Predictions of wind speed for six different near-shore sites were made using the NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research) wind data. The distances between the NCAR sites and prediction sites were varied between 40km and 150km. A well-known wind energy prediction program, WindPRO, was used. The prediction results were compared with the measured data from the AWS(Automated Weather Stations). Although the NCAR wind data were located far away from the AWS sites, the prediction errors were within 9% for all the cases. In terms of sector-wise wind energy distributions, the predictions were fairly close to the measurements, and the error in predicting main wind direction was less than
. This proves that the NCAR wind data are very useful in roughly estimating wind energy in offshore or near-shore sites where offshore wind farm might be constructed in Korea.
Analysis of the Correlation between Climatic Elements and Electricity Generation of Building Integrated Photo Voltaic on Gymnasium Building's Curtain Wall

Concerning about global warming due to emission of greenhouse effect gas like C02 and depletion of fossil fuels have been spreading. So the need for solar energy utilization is increased. It is essentially important to make efforts to reduce usage of fossil energy resources. In this study, we analyzed the correlation between climatic elements and the photovoltaic power generation. Cloud cover of the correlation coefficient was 0.93. The order of the correlation coefficient was average temperatures, hours of sunshine duration of sunshine and the humidity. To accurately analyze of the degree of correlation for the photovoltaic power generation, additional research about climatic elements that show a high correlation is needed.
Characteristics of Ultimate Load in a Wind Turbine for IEC 61400-1 DLC1.1 and DLC1.3

IEC 61400-1 requires design lifetime of wind turbines at least 20 years, thus wind turbine should be assured for structural safety through load assessment. DLCs have been defined with respect to the load assessment in IEC 61400-1. In addition, if the extreme design values for DLC1.3 are equal or exceed the extreme design value for DLC1.1, DLC1.1 may be omitted. To omit DLC1.1, scale factor (c) will be increased in DLC1.3. However, this particular adjustment is not specified guidelines. Thus, this study was conducted. DLC1.1 was calculated for extrapolation of 50 years-extreme events using several probability distribution functions and fitting methods. And DLC1.3 was calculated for up to seven different values of scale factor (c) with
in steps of 0.5. Finally, in this study, scale factor (c) that was the value of 4.51 was determined.
A Study on the Determining ESS Capacity for Stabilizing Power Output of Haeng-won Wind Farm in Jeju

This paper presents the characteristics of power generation output at Haeng-won wind farm and how to determine the optimized ESS capacity for power stabilizing. Depend on the fluctuation rate of wind power output variation, wind farm capacity and site, power stabilization will be impacted. Therefore, we need to determine proper ESS capacity. Using the actual data of Haeng-won wind farm from 2009. 3 to 2010.2., capacity of ESS was determined by moving average value. To verify the proposed algorithm, simulations are carried out with PSCAD/EMTDC program. As a result, optimal ESS capacity of Haeng-won wind farm in Jeju is estimated about 1.63 MWh.
The Greenhouse-Gas Mitigation Potential analysis by Distribution of Solar Thermal System in Housing Sector

New and renewable energy systems(solar thermal system, photovoltaic system, geothermal system, wind power system) are environmentally friendly technologies and these in South Korea are very important measures to reduce greenhouse-gas(GHG) and to push ahead with Green Growth. The purpose of this paper is to analyze GHG mitigation potential by distribution of solar thermal system in housing sector with bottom-up model called 'Long-range Energy Alternative Planning system'. Business as usual(BAU) was based on energy consumption characteristic with the trend of social-economic prospects and the volume of housing. The total amount of GHG emission of BAU was expected to continuous increase from 66.0 million-ton
in 2007 to 73.1 million-ton
in 2030 because of the increase of energy consumption in housing. The alternative scenario, distribution of solar thermal system in housing sector had GHG mitigation potential 1.54 million-ton
in 2030. The results of this study showed that new and renewable energy systems made a contribution of reducing the use of fossil fuel and the emission of greenhouse-gas in building.
Study on Improvement of Thermal Environment by using Wind-driven Natural Ventilation on the Atrium

According to the advancement of computer and simulation method, it becomes possible to predict indoor climate precisely by using CFD simulation coupled with heat conduction, convection, and radiation. However, predicting the indoor climate is generally conducted by using a simplified CFD coupled simulation method since it takes quite long time to use a general CFD simulation method. In this study, a simplified CFD coupled simulation was conducted in order to find out the effect of natural ventilation by wind-driven in atrium. As a result of calculation, it was clarified that the natural ventilation driven by temperature difference was not enough to remove the accumulated heat of upper zone and the natural ventilation by wind-driven was needed. Finally, it is required to decide the window direction and size based on correct indoor climate prediction method for the effective use of natural ventilation by wind-driven.
A study of Illumination on Exhibitory Space by Natural Light Through the Inducing Space

In recent years, it clearly shows the tendency toward the utilization of daylight in many exhibitory buildings such as museum since the expectation of visitors for whom high illuminance levels are preferable to perceive the details of the works of art. Shading devices and special glazings are often used as the tool to control the amount of light and heat which should be avoided for the presentation of high-light sensitive art works such as paintings. Another way of controling the light is to provide the space for inducing and attenuating light in the exhibitory building. This study aims to investigate the illuminance on the exhibitory space when the space for inducing and attenuating light is applied. Interaction between the daylight and the space was simulated by Lumen Micro program with variation of the size of the exhibitory space, the length of inner wall, surface reflectivity, area of windows to obtain the illumination of the wall surface. This study shows that those variables affect the illumination on the wall surfaces. By comparing the results with suggestive illumination of KS and ICOM, available wall for display on natural lighting are suggested for the seasons and time.
A Study on the Economic Analysis of Cooling-Heating System Using Ground Source Heat in a public library

This study evaluated the economic benefits by comparing Cooling-Heating System with the existing system in the public library. The building's annual energy consumption was measured by adding the figures of the absorber chillers, the air conditioners and heaters in the building. The total amount of annual energy consumption was 143.51RT in air-conditioning and 83.66RT in heating. So, We made the capacity of geothermal heat pumps three 50RTs in order to check up this system. In order to estimate each construction and equipment cost and to evaluate economical efficiency, LCC(Life Cycle Cost) method was used and the service life of the building was sixty years. The result of analysis was that the geothermal cooling-heating system was more efficient than the existing system in public library.
