  • Microwave dielectric properties of $(1-x)CaWO_4-xYNbO_4$ ceramics have been investigated as a function of $YNbO_4$ content($0.05{\leq}x{\leq}0.4$). A single phase with tetragonal scheelite structure was obtained up to x=0.10 and then the secondary phase with fergusonite structure was increased. With the increase of $YNbO_4$ content, apparent densities of the specimens were decreased. This results were due to the lower theoretical density of $YNbO_4(5.581g/cm^3)$ than that of $CaWO_4(6.117g/cm^3)$. Dielectric constant(K) and quality factor(Qf) were decreased with $YNbO_4$ content which could be attribute to the decrease of density and the increase of secondary phase. Temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (TCF) of the specimens with the $YNbO_4$ content was depended on dielectric mixing rule.

  • The luminescence behaviors of Yttrium niobate and Bi doped Yttrium niobate were investigated under UV and low voltage electron excitations and interpreted with the first-principle calculations. In the UV excitation and emission spectra of $YNbO_4$ and $YNbO_4:Bi$, we were able to separate host contribution and Bi contribution and found that the shift in emission peak to longer wavelength is mainly due to Bi contribution. Using density functional theory, the cluster calculations were carried out for both $YNbO_4$ and $YNbO_4:Bi$. From the calculated density of states, we were also able to explain the charge transfer gap in the host and the effect of Bi in the excitation and emission spectra theoretically.

  • In the excitation spectra of $YNbO_4$ : $Eu^{3+}$, the charge transfer (CT) band around 270 nm due to $[NbO_4]^{3-}$$-Eu^{3+}$ interaction and sharp excitation peaks by f-f transition of $Eu^{3+}$ strongly appeared simultaneously. CT band depended on the structural properties of powders, showing the red-shift with increasing the crystallinity, while the f-f transition peaks were independent of the crystallinity. For $YNb_{1-x}Ta_xO_4$ : $Eu^{3+}$ (x = 0.05.0.2), $[TaO_4]^{3-}$. configuration was locally constructed, leading to the blue-shift in CT band and the decrease in the red emission intensity with increasing the Ta content.

  • Field emission display (FED) is currently being explored as a potential flat panel display technology. The need of new materials for low voltage blue phosphors for FED focused our attention on the $Y_2O_3-Nb_2O_5$ sys-tem. Yttrium niobate doped with $Bi^{3+}$ was prepared by solid state reaction technique and the optimization of the luminescent properties with a control of $Bi^{3+}$ amounts and Y/Nb ratio was studied. Under 254 nm and low voltage electron excitations $Bi^{3+}-activated$ YNbO4 phosphors showed a strong and relatively narrow blue em-ission band with a range of 420 to 450 nm, Especially 0.4wt% $Bi^{3+}\;doped\;YNbO_4$ phosphors with Y/Nb ratio of 1/1 showed the maximum emission intensity. Under low voltage electron excitation maximum emission in-tensity appeared at the Y/Nb ratio of 0.495/0.505.

  • $YNbO_4:Yb^{3+}/Er^{3+}$ is synthesized using a solid-state reaction process with a LiCl flux. The effects of the Er/(Yb+Er) ratios ($R_{Er}$) on the up-conversion (UC) and down-conversion (DC) spectra are investigated. The XRD data confirm that the $Yb^{3+}$ and $Er^{3+}$ ions are fully substituted for the $Y^{3+}$ sites. The UC emission spectra activated by 980 nm consists of green and red emission bands, which originate from the $Er^{3+}$ ions through an energy transfer (ET) process from $Yb^{3+}$ to $Er^{3+}$. The UC emission intensity depends on the $R_{Er}$ value, and the findings demonstrate that $R_{Er}{\leq}0.14$ is suitable for an effective UC process. The DC emission spectra under 269 nm radiation of the synthesized powders exhibits not only a strong blue emission assigned to the $[NbO_4]^{3-}$ niobates, but also green peaks that originate from the $Er^{3+}$ ions through an ET process between $[NbO_4]^{3-}$ and $Er^{3+}$.

  • Field emission displays (FED) are currently being explored as a potential flat panel display technology. Specifically, the optimization pf efficient bin emitting phosphors in the $Y_2O_3-Nb_2O_5$ system and influence of particle size of phosphors on the luminescent properties was studied. Under 254 nm excitation, Bi activated $YNbO_4$ phosphors showed a strong and relatively narrow blue omission band, peaking at about 420-450 nm. Especially 0.4 wt% Bi doped yttrium phosphors showed the maximum emission intensity which is almost three times as much as that of $Y_2SiO_5:Ce$ phosphors. Finally, Ce doped $Y_2SiO_5$ phosphors exhibited strong and broad blue emission band, centered at 390-420 nm and maximum emission intensity at the doping concentration of 0.02-0.03 mol.
