Analysis of educational effect on unified curriculum of regular engineering education and lifelong education (정규 공학교육과 평생교육의 통합교육과정에 따른 효과 분석)

  • Continuing Education institutions of the university will be activated to increase opportunities for adult education and to give educational functions of the university back to society, but professional development programs conducted by institutions does not recognize as a formal education because those programs do not share the quality of education using the university's infrastructure. In this paper, by breaking away from the issues of Continuing Education, we develop the incumbent professional development programs through the sharing of high-quality education programs of university, and analysis the effectiveness of those programs in which university students participate during their school vacation. The proposed programs was to verify the educational effect through survey of students who participated in the proposed training. Grafting professional development programs onto future engineering education of university would like to be introduced.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and apply an informal engineering education program for engineering education that is realized outside the framework of formal education. To this end, a non-format engineering education program was developed and rationalized, discussing participants' experience in participating in the program. The developed non-format engineering education program was applied to 90 high school learners interested in engineering in a one-night, two-day camp format, and the goal was confirmed through open surveys and in-depth interviews. The goal of the non-format engineering education program is to understand the importance of engineering and engineering design in real life and the principles of engineering design processes, and to use a variety of knowledge and tools to creatively solve engineering problems creatively. In addition, education programs were developed based on the fact that real-life examples allow engineers to understand what they do, design their own careers, and collaborate with colleagues to share various engineering issues and develop communication skills on engineering topics.

  • This paper describes the development of curriculum for the division of Mechatronics in Samcheok University to meet the requirement of Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea(ABEEK). The curriculum of the department of mechatronics in South Korea and overseas university is analysed and then the curriculum is developed considering the synergistic combination of mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, control engineering and computer engineering. And then the geopolitical condition of university is reflected in the curriculum. ABEEK requirements for major of engineering are also reflected. As a result, interdisciplinary curriculum that provides analytic capability and pragmatic qualification to students is developed.

  • The final goal of this study is to develop the in-service program of engineering education for professors of engineering college. In this study, survey research method using questionnaire was used to engineering professors of universities and junior colleges. The study contents were analysis of in-service status and educational needs for professors of engineering college. Statistical package SPSS for windows, korean edition version 10.0, was used for analysing data. To do it, 97 questionnaire were used finally. Educational needs was divided into engineering teaching method, engineering evaluation method, and engineering basic competancy. Equation suggested by Borich was induced to calculate the educational needs. Results were that educational needs of engineering teaching method and engineering basic competency were high, respectively, but, educational needs of engineering evaluation method was low. It was known that we need to consider the results during in-service program development.

  • Due to the less variety of experiment equipments for engineering education, the development of designated educational equipment is really in urgent need at most time. Especially for the in-depth engineering major subject, vibration engineering, there are almost no related educational equipments in Korea. Accordingly, in order to simulate the vibration phenomena occurred in the actual field, the development of educational equipment for vibration engineering theory and experiment education is required. This paper introduces four development educational equipments developed in graduated research works, which are critical speed test educational equipment, balancing machine educational equipment, isolation educational equipment using eddy current and active vibration isolation educational equipment. Through using them in experiment lesson, the utilization and practicality of educational equipment are verified. The proposed improvement for future development and application of educational equipment is shown in addition.

  • This study was conducted to develop pre-engineering educational program model based on STEM integration approach. To accomplish this purpose literature review and content validity ratio survey were carried out. The main results of this study were as follows: First, the conceptual model of STEM integration approach was constituted. Second, the conceptual model of pre-engineering educational program model based on STEM integration approach was proposed. Third, the formation steps of inquiry project activity, problem solving activity, and creative engineering design activity were developed to structure the educational program.

  • This study aims to investigate the key common topics identified and discussed in relevant literature associated with the integrative efforts among STEM disciplines. The key methodology and pedagogy were examined and the significant benefits of using the design method for STEM education were discussed. Meta-analysis was employed and qualitative approach was mainly used to synthesize the major findings and conclusions of the 33 empirical studies. The findings of this meta-analysis revealed that the types and names describing the design methods used the various terms, but the key features have reflected the similar pedagogical benefits and key characteristics. The engineering design is an effective strategic methodology and pedagogy for STEM education. In addition, the design methods show the key benefits including (1) to improve academic achievement, (2) to promote students' affective gains, (3) to facilitate collaborative learning, and (4) to explore STEM related careers and jobs. The collaborative works among STEM professions are needed to promote the benefits of using design methods for integrating STEM subjects.

  • This study was carried out to analyze the design pattern on engineering design curriculum P University based on the curriculum design model. For this study, the relation model between organizational factors by Drake & Burns(2004) and university curriculum design pattern Toohey(1999) were used as a frame of the analysis. From the analysis, we confirmed following results. Firstly, the relation between the subjects in the engineering design curriculum was designed to acquire the knowledges of facts, topics, and concepts and then to improve low-level skills, broad-range skills, and high-level skills related to engineering design sequently. Secondly, the design pattern of the engineering design curriculum analyzed in this paper is project and problem based structure. This result will be useful for reviewing and improving the relation between engineering design curriculum.

  • The recent development of engineering design education has brought enormous influence in many engineering educations. But, most studies in this area have focused only on the system or curriculum development rather than on the effect of the program to the real situation, the transfer. The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of learning and learning transfer in engineering design program at the university level. Transfer is defined as the use of trained knowledge and skill back on the job. The results of the study are as follows. First, learner characteristics and curriculum design had a significant influence on learning effectiveness. Second, learner characteristics had a significant influence an learning transfer. Also, the learning had a significant influence an learning transfer.
