A Study on actual state of engineering education and research for improvement (공학교육의 실태와 개선방안에 대한 연구)

  • In this paper, local industry target by analyzing the actual state of engineering education-oriented, demand for engineering education to come up with ways to improve. To this end, training human resources training program in engineering education practice Caps-tone design, Cooperative system, contract-type as the main theme of human resources in the southwestern industrial target academic staff investigate the actual conditions were run cooperative education programs. Survey, southwestern regional industry operating experience, most industry-university cooperative education program that was unsatisfactory. In addition, promoting Cooperative system experience in the industry will promote the future looked reservation position, while the Caps-tone design is somewhat academic partners participating a majority opinion education program run by the model will be developing. Regional strategy based on future demand for industry-oriented engineering education program for running is to come up with ways improvements.

A Comparison of Model Training Programs on Teaching Engineering (공학교육 워크숍의 설계)

  • In recent years more and more universities are recognizing the need to provide training in teaching skills to their teaching staff. The demand for teaching excellence at the level of higher education arises because the national competitiveness in the Information Age depends acutely on the abilities of college graduates. This paper descibes and compares the programs on teaching for faculty and graduate students (faculty-to-be) at four engineering schools - University of Michigan, Purdue University, Cornell University, and Michigan Technological University. These four schools represent a wide spectrum in terms of the type of institution(private or public, teaching- or research-oriented) and the size of engineering program. The content of the programs are found to be similar, although some variations are found in organization, audience, and emphasis. The major conclusion is that the universities must consider the particulars of the mission of their university and the nature of their student body in desiging a training program for it to be successful.

  • Recently, there have been a number of voices from industry that control education at the university is too theoretical and so university graduates are lack of practical ability to apply the control idea to actual systems. In order to reflect these voices, this paper investigates a few examples of successful control education in Asian countries, and presents a modern curriculum of control education, and an effective methodology of control education. For effective control education, we need design and simulation practices of control system using computer software packages, and hands-on experiments using physical hardware plants. The experimental setups should be rugged and reliable to prevent from the breakdown by the students who are non-experts in dealing with hardwares and softwares.

  • Engineering methodology which is defined broadly as the various nontechnical knowledge such as design process and the personal skills such as creativity that an engineer must have to be a successful practitioner, is not sufficiently implemented in the present undergraduate engineering programs. A systematic design education model is proposed in this paper to teach the principles and art of engineering. First level design education is to introduce engineering process and cultivate student's creativity. Second one is to apply the knowledge of sciences, mathematics and engineering sciences to the solution of basic engineering problems. Third one is to solve a real-life problem.

  • Recently, the number of applicants for the engineering college is gradually decreased all over the nation. Additionally, the concerns of fall of freshman mathematical ability are raised due to the incomplete high school education. Therefore, the local universities endeavor in order to improve the quality of mathematics education, and study the countermeasure against the crisis. As part of these efforts, Sang-Myung University founds the innovation center for engineering education. The center derives several ideas in order to enhance the mathematics education quality. In this paper, the enhancement plans for the mathematics education in Sang-Myung University are proposed. Results in this paper will be helpful for other university to enhance the mathematics education as reference materials.

  • Recently, regional society requires engineers to understand the international affairs and to be global experts endowed with leadership. General education appropriate to engineers should fulfill these needs and provide wide understandings in humanity. General sciences education should be also reinforced for the students taking low level science courses under 7th education program to improve learning ability of the major subjects in college. A general education component including humanity for the engineers could be trained continuously from primary school to college under the 2009 revised education program. Various opportunity for education should be provided through the special curriculum development at the college or department level, which trains experts who fulfill the need of community. Multi-major program is a substitute for offering the educational opportunity to the students in environmental engineering, one of multidisciplinary programs. Emphasized criteria of the curriculum requirements and adequate contents of general education need be also developed for supporting the students to take advanced courses in major.

  • In knowledge based society of 21c, engineers require not only their own speciality but also engineering basic competency such as creative thinking, the ability of working together, the ability of communication. Engineering colleges responsible for educating engineers consider developing curriculum including Engineering Basic Competency which is reflecting the needs of the times. By utilizing the accreditation programs of engineering education, UK-SPEC of UK Engineering Council, EA(Engineering Australia) standards/handbook of the Institute of Engineers Australia, O*NET of U.S. Occupational Network, this study generates core elements of engineering basic competency to prove the capability of engineering basic competency required to desired engineers. Core constituents derived from the study were categorized into 3 major areas of the basic engineering literacy in Humanities and Social Sciences(HSS), the ability of Creativity Engineering Design, Career development and each category and constituents were surveyed and checked by engineers in the field to deduce engineering basic competency that should be educated in the engineering college.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate and to display circumstances about importance issues connected with various publication data and engineering ethic principle. It is an investigation study about circumstance and actual conditions of engineering ethics education that is spoken by engineering ethics or engineer ethics on present Japan. Engineering ethics principle, or engineer ethics education is continued until present appearing in the 1980s by formal course of study in the case of American university. But, in the case of Japan, along with appearance of JABEE (Japanese Accreditation Board for engineering education), engineering ethics education for engineer is proceeded very intensively. At present, the purpose of engineering ethics education is heard on important engineering literary category so much so that can emphasize very as basic attitude to prepare everybody if it is a person who is to be an engineer. The present condition and circumstance of Japanese engineering ethics education analysis may become good information in the beginning step on ethics principle education of engineering our country.
