  • Purpose of the study is to derive improvement scheme by analyzing the actual condition of engineering ethics educational curriculum. Documentary survey was conducted to derive the concept of engineering ethics, background of how engineering ethics educational curriculum was introduced, the purpose and educational method of engineering ethics education, and the present condition of domestic and foreign engineering ethics education. On this basis, survey was taken on engineering ethics class students and company recruiters. Therefore, improvement scheme that suits domestic engineering ethics education curriculum has been suggested.

  • With the program outcomes of 'the Accreditation of Engineering Education' in Korea, the acquisition and assessment of ethical attitudes as an engineer is emphasized these days. In this study, we surveyed and investigated the attitudes and ethical minds of college students majoring in information and communication engineering regarding their professional attitude and ethical behavior at present and in the future by assuming their hire in this industry. The average score of engineer ethics was 2.25 out of 5. Multi-variate regression found that the unethical attitudes of information and communication engineer were more distinct for students of older age, students with 'rude and insulting' attitudes, students who had not served in army, students who are not idealistic, and students who do not live with parents. The results provide educators with useful understandings related to the engineering ethics education program for college students.

  • This paper was designed to identify influencing factors and to develop indices for measuring information and communication technology related ethics behaviors of college students majoring in information and communication engineering. Data collected from 288 students surveyed in Busan and Kyungnam area were used and the average of information and communication engineering ethics were below the mid-points meaning 'fairly ethical'. 'Passively violating behavior' showed the highest value (2.77 out of 5) while 'rudeness and insulting behavior' showed the lowest (1.65 out of 5). Second, variables of gender, age, religion, idealism, and relativism were revealed to be meaningful ones. Thirdly, some codes of ethics in Korea are very poor and their presence are not well perceived. Fourthly, codes of ethics in Korea don't cover comprehensively responsibility to the public, to employers or clients, and to the profession. Fifthly, engineering societies in USA hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public. Sixthly, new social issues including sustainable development are well discussed in the codes of ethics in USA.

  • With the rapid development of science and technology and their increased impacts on our society, we witness a growing recognition of the importance of engineers' social responsibility and their professional ethics. Especially, the introduction of EC2000 and ABET into engineering education has been contributed to reinforce the systemization of ethics instruction. However, we could not attain the educational goal of integration of engineering education and ethics by general declaration of its importance. We need to deal with the vital questions how to institutionalize and implement engineering ethics in engineering curriculum. This article focuses on three aspects. First, it mainly outlines the developments and the traits of engineering education in American universities. Second, by classifying the engineering ethics education into several patterns, we discuss the characteristics and implications according to those Patterns. Third, it is helpful to explore the way how we could apply these patterns to Korean engineering education. It is expected to combine the stand-alone engineering ethics lectures with ethics -across -the -curriculum considering each university's circumstances and resources. Still, many challenges remain, most notably the need for engineering faculty and non-engineering faculty to cooperate and accept for engineering ethics education.

Korean communities occasionally tried for ethical codes from the 1970s to the 1990s, and have paid a serious attention to ethical codes in the 2000s. The forms of ethical codes became more sophisticated pursuing detailed commentary and ethical education. The focus of contents changed from professional dignity to social responsibility, and the importance of research integrity became embossed in the 2000s. Scientific and technological communities in Korea should make or revise ethical codes with self-imposed control considering realistic operation.
