VAV Air Conditioning Research for Ship HVAC Efficiency (선박 HVAC 효율 증가를 위한 변풍량 방식 공기조화 연구)

  • In recent years, attention of ship owners for the energy saving of the vessel is being collected due to the volume decline. Ship accommodation consists of watertight type windows and is closed, Ship HVAC is used to promote a comfortable environment for the crew. In addition requirements for comfort of the crew is getting stronger with the improvement of living standards, there is a need for HVAC improvements. In this paper, propose method to save energy and improve HVAC controls by using the HVAC structure of the variable air volume.

  • The increasing social interests for energy saving has highlighted the need for more buildings with variable air volume (VAV) systems. In order to control the VAV system at multi-zone, it is essential to control terminal unit installed in each zone. This research proposes control method with ventilation requirement of VAV terminal unit in multi-zone. And the conventional and proposed control algorithms were compared through a TRNSYS simulation program. The proposed VAV terminal unit control method satisfies all the conditions of indoor thermal comfort and indoor air quality. An energy comparison with the conventional control method showed that, the method satisfies not only the indoor thermal comfort and IAQ, but also reduces the energy consumption.

  • Variable air volume(VAV) system designed for improving interior environmental control has steadily evolved over the last 20 years. Major advantage of VAV system is that VAV technology allows a single system to provide simultaneous heating and cooling without a seasonal changeover. Research is carried out in order to study the influence on the energy consumption and ventilation performance of two kinds of office building with a mixing ventilation system. Data required for performance evaluation in these building is obtained from the central monitoring station and by measurement.

  • Control algorithms of an air handling unit by using the mixing box plenum pressures were developed and verified by experiments. Control algorithms developed for this study were the setpoint algorithms for the outdoor damper position, the outdoor/fixed plenum pressure, and the return/exhaust plenum pressure. The outdoor/fixed plenum pressure setpoint was used to control the bypass damper position, and the return/exhaust plenum pressure setpoint was used to control the return fan speed. Experimental results showed the good control of the required outdoor air demand. Therefore, setpoint algorithms developed for this study may effectively be applied for the control of the VAV air handling unit.

  • The present study concerns an experiment on the supply-air control in variable air volume (VAV) system with a Pl control logic. A thermal chamber with a Pl control logic is constructed to verify the previously suggested multi-zone model. The stratified thermal model is adopted in the control logic for a thermal chamber cooling test. The effects of taler- mal parameters and control parameters such as supply air temperature and Pl control factor are investigated by implementing the thermal chamber cooling test. The experimental results obtained show that the transient behavior of the air-conditioned space temperature are in good agreement with the simulation results of the stratified thermal model.

  • This paper presents an energy analysis on the VAV system of 10-story building in Seoul using DOE-2 program and Modified Bin Method. The use of VAV system is an excellent means of saving energy in new buildings and/or retrofit. The fan control techniques considered are cycling, discharge dampers, inlet vanes, and motor speed control. The monthly and annual energy consumption is calculated for fan control techniques, components, and chiller types. The results of annual fan electricity use are compared using DOE-2 and Modified Bin Method, and show fairly good agreement. In addition, factors affecting energy consumption are also described.

  • The present study concerns the simulation of supply-air control in a variable air volume (VAV) system. A stratified lumped thermal model (multi-zone model) is suggested to predict local thermal response of an air-conditioned space. The effects of various thermal parameters such as the cooling system capacity, the thermal mass of air-conditioned space, the time delay of thermal effect, and the building envelope heat transmission are investigated in detail. Further, the influence of control parameters, PI control factor and the sensor location on a VAV system is quantitatively delineated. The results obtained show that the previous homogeneous lumped thermal model (1-zone model) may predict a significantly different thermal response in the air-conditioned space according to the sensor location.

  • This paper reports the dynamic analysis of energy consumption for an office building by heat resistance-capacitance method. If a building is divided into several wall components and the wall components is replaced by one thermal capacitance and several thermal resistances, the building becomes an electric circuit. By solving the simultaneous equations of the circuit, the dynamic heat transfer characteristics and the energy consumption rate of the building were predicted. Accuracy of modified BIN method was evaluated by the present resistance-capacitance method. The result shows that modified BIN method overpredicts the heating load of the office building 15%. Annual energy consumptions of equipments(fan, boiler, chiller) for various ventilating control system(CAV, VAV, FCU+VAV, FCU+CAV) were compared. FCU+CAV shows the minimum annual energy consumption.
