  • The purpose of this study is to examine the text and learning activities of Korean and American home economics textbooks from the perspective of building adolescent empowerment and to suggest an alternative framework for the textbook. An in-depth content analysis was conducted for the Korean and American home economics textbooks. We analyzed the text and learning activities in the textbook on three levels of empowerment: Micro, Meso, and Macro. Major findings are as follows. First, in the case of Korean textbooks, the results showed that the three levels of empowerment were off-balance (Individual Empowerment: 55%, Group E: 37%, Organizational E: 8%). The educational contents in Korean textbooks were described at the Meso-level. In the case of the American textbooks, the result showed that the educational contents of IE(43%), GE(40%), and OE(17%) were relatively balanced. Therefore, the educational contents of the American textbooks were described at the Macro-level. Second, the learning activities in the Korean textbooks put a greater weight on IE at 66%, followed by GE at 25%, but OE at 9% only. The results showed that learning activities in Korean textbooks were presented at the Meso-level, but that the three levels of empowerment were significantly off-balance. In the case of the American textbooks, the results showed that the learning activities were comparatively well balanced at IE(36%), GE(40%) and OE(23%). Therefore, learning activities in the American textbooks were presented at the Macro-level. Based on the results, we suggested an alternative framework for 'understanding of self as an adolescent' unit, to build adolescent empowerment at the Macro-level.

  • Based on the results of preceding researches that the uncertainty perceived by the private security guards about their roles exerts direct effects on the business performance of the security industry, it needs to preferentially examine the degree of authority that the private security guards have. Accordingly, as the psychological empowerment criteria of private security guards, this research examined the suitability of items, reliability of items, the level of difficulty of items, and the item goodness of fit from the viewpoint of the appropriateness of category of responses, and it is summarized as follows. • To date, the majority of research on empowerment has focussed on the individual job incumbent's psychological experience of empowerment and linking this with various work-related outcomes. However, a model that focuses on individual subjective reactions is at best incomplete if it does not include an examination of the contextual factors that shape those perceptions. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationships among situational factors, psychological empowerment and employee's attitudes. The data were collected by questionnaire from a sample of 525 employees who were working at business organizations in Kangwon area. Results indicated that organizational characteristics such as access to information, LMX, and participative climate were positively related to an employee's psychological empowerment. Psychological empowerment was positively related to an employee's job attitudes such as organizational commitment and innovative behavior. Finally, theoretical and practical implications from the results were discussed.

  • This study was performed to analyze empowerment process of the disabled. Participants were 11 disabled college students and they were individually face-to-face in-depth interviewed until data were saturated. This study used the grounded theory approach based on Strauss and Corbin(1998). With the qualitative constant comparative analysis, 105 concepts, 22 subcategories, and 12 categories were generated. In the axial coding, a paradigm model was proposed as follows: The central phenomenon of the empowerment process of the disabled adolescents was 'Rising from the Limits'. The causal conditions were 'Just living' and 'realizing disabilities'. The contextual conditions were 'Being excluded', 'But wishing', and 'Breaking down'. The intervening conditions were 'Without giving up' and 'Taking support'. The action/interaction strategies were 'Grasping own lifestyle' and 'Being proactive'. The consequences were 'Acquiring the self-control', 'Getting generosity', and 'Participating in society'. In the selective coding, the core category was 'to live together stately with grasping own lifestyle pro-actively as the disabled'. Based on the core category, three types and 4 stages of the empowerment process of the disabled adolescents were found. The types were 'Social change oriented type', 'Self-development oriented type', and 'Passive effort oriented type' and the stages took 'Isolation stage', 'Rising stage', 'Mastering stage' and 'Stately being together stage'. In particular, this process had the circulation structure of which these 4 stages are not terminated, and developed and repeated. In conclusion, these results convey to us the understanding and knowledge about empowerment process of the disabled as their healthy -whole and unique- development process. And some implications and suggestions for the social work services and theories about the disabled focusing on the pre-adulthood period.
