  • In the present study, a unified shear design method was developed to evaluate the shear strength of concrete beams with and without FRP shear reinforcement. The contributions of FRP and concrete on shear strength were defined separately. By comparing the current design method calculated results with the existing test results, it was found that Triantafillou model shows a reliable prediction of FRP effective strain and FRP shear strength contributions. The concrete shear strength contribution was defined by the strain-based shear strength model developed in the previous study. The shear strength of concrete compression zone was evaluated based on the material failure criteria of the concrete subjected to the compressive normal and shear stresses. The proposed strength model was verified by comparing its prediction results to prior test results. The comparisons showed that the proposed method accurately predicts the strengths of the test specimens for both FRP shear reinforced and unreinforced concrete beams.

  • Shear resistance of BESTOBEAM, which has angle as shear connector and was developed with purpose of easy construction, was tested. With the test results shear resistance design equation was proposed. Unlike angle connector of Eurocode 4, BESTO BEMA shear connector behaves like fixed-end beam. Therefor longer span of the shear connector the lower shear resistance it has. As a result, shear resistance of BESTOBEAM shear connector according to its length tends to decrease as its length gets longer. The authors proposed design equation of angle shear connector sased on the test results. The results from the test and the proposed equation match within 10% error range. Therefore the proposed equation can be used for designing shear connector of BESTOBEAM.

  • Full-depth precast concrete deck bridge has shear pockets for shear connectors that give composite action with steel girder. Strength and shear stiffness of shear connection that is needed to design shear connectors in case that shear pockets are filled with nonshrink mortar are investigated. In case that simple span full-depth precast concrete deck bridge is designed by allowable stress design, distribution of shear connector is suggested and details of precast panel that is placed on the support are proposed. Appropriate distribution of shear connectors in strength design and fatigue design is investigated through parameter analyses using partial interaction theory. The effects of nonshrink mortar strength is studied using the results of experiments and analyses and adequate strength is proposed.

  • Both shear and torsional moments apply shear stresses on cross-section of a member, which need to be considered in the design. But in the current Korean Building Code, the design equations for shear and torsional moments are expressed in terms of the sectional strength with different units, causing figures to be drawn separately in two axes. If the design equations are expressed in terms of stresses, then the stresses of shear and torsional moments can be added, allowing figures to be drawn in one axis for easy recognition of the design procedure and the final design results. Moreover, the current code's design equations for shear and torsional moments are considered separately with the intention of summing the area of stirrups with respect to unit length for shear moment ($A_{\upsilon}/s$) and torsional moment ($2A_t/s$). Since the size or type of vertical stirrups are predetermined in the design process, the design equations are expressed in terms of the spacing of stirrups rather than the $A_{\upsilon}/s$ and $2A_t/s$ terms, clarifying various design steps and a design process.

  • Plate girders with variable depths have been often used at piers considering not only the economy but also an aesthetic aspect. Tapered plate girders exhibit more complicated behaviors than prismatic girders especially under shear. However, a comprehensive design method for the determination of the shear strength has yet to be developed mainly due to lack of study. In this study, investigated is the buckling and ultimate behaviors of tapered plate girders subjected to shear through finite element analyses. From the analysis results, a simple design formula is suggested for the evaluation of the shear strength of tapered plate girders.

  • Shear test data have been extracted from previous experimental research and compiled into a database that may be the largest ever made. In this paper, the shear database (SDB) was used for evaluating shear design provisions for both reinforced concrete (RC) beams and prestressd concrete (PSC) beams. A discussion on the use of the results of this evaluation related to calibration and strength reduction factor for the shear design provisions was also provided. It was observed that the shear design provisions did not provide good predictions for RC members and gave very poor predictions especially for RC members without shear reinforcement. On the other hand, the limit on shear strength contributed by transverse reinforcement was observed to be lower than necessary. The shear design provisions gave very unconservative results for the large RC members (d>700mm) without shear reinforcement having light amount of longitudinal reinforcement $(\rho_w<1.0\%)$. However, for PSC members the shear design provisions gave a good estimation of ultimate shear strength with a reasonable margin of safety. Despite of a large difference of accuracy in prediction of shear strength for RC members and PSC members, the shear design provisions used a same shear strength reduction factor for these members. As a result, the shear design provisions did not provide a uniform factor of safety against shear failure for different types of members.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the horizontal shear strength on the interface between PC and cast-in-place concrete for PC composite beams. Six specimens were tested to examine the structural performance of the horizontal interface with different surface condition and stirrup detailing. Except for SF-291B specimen failed in flexural compression, strengths and deformation capacities of five specimens were determined by horizontal shear failure. Horizontal shear strengths by composite horizontal shear or shear friction in current codes could be used to predict the horizontal shear capacity of the interface for specimens. Also detailing for stirrup by PCI design provision could be used to accomplish the composite action in the interface.

  • Nonseismic designed RC frame have a possibility of shear failure because of deficiencies of reinforcing details. To model the shear failure in numerical analysis, shear strength degradation models which Include Moehle's and ATC 40 are compared and applied to push-over analysis. For numerical analysis, three storied building frame is selected and designed according to Korean Concrete Design Code(2003). As results, It is shown that Moehle's shear strength degradation model estimates the shear strength lower than NZSEE model and has less variation than ATC 40 model and all the shear strengths of models are greater than the nominal shear strength of ACI 318. Also, from the numerical analysis, it is pointed out that there may be great difference in lateral drift capacity if a different shear strength model is used. And the capacity can be severely underestimated if the restraining model of plastic rotation of ATC 40 is used, compared to the use of shear spring model for shear degradation.

  • Concrete filled steel tube(CFT) has outstanding deformation capacity and strength in comparison with reinforced concrete or steel tube. CFT drilled shaft, which is developed large shear force due to seismic load and soil liquefaction, is designed as large diameter. However, shear design equations of the current standards do not consider bond stress of CFT and it results in extremely conservative design. Currently, previous studies for improving shear equations scarcely exist and are impossible applied to large CFT drilled shafts since these studies focus on only small scale experimental research. In this study, eventually to propose improving shear equation of large diameter CFT, it is preliminary research to compare and investigate the previous studies and current standards.
