  • This paper attempts to analyze the trend of research methods in Korean social welfare research and discuss utilities of qualitative research methods in broadening and deepening social welfare knowledge body in Korea. First, this paper examines research methods of 538 research articles published in Korean Journal of Social Welfare from the volume one in 1979 to the volume 51 in 2002. It has the following results: (1) non-empirical research articles were dominant in the 1980s; (2) empirical research articles have been dominant since the middle of the 1990s; and (3) research articles utilizing qualitative methods have appeared rarely since the end of the 1990s. Second, this paper examines the characteristics and the types(phenomenology, grounded theory, ethno-graphic approach, narrative inquiry etc.) of qualitative research methods. Third, this paper discusses (1) fitness between practice in social welfare discipline and qualitative research methods and (2) utilities of qualitative research methods in broadening and deepening knowledge body of Korean social welfare. In discussing the fitness, this paper focuses that qualitative research methods fits with the needs of social welfare discipline regarding broadening and deepening our understandings about social phenomena related to practice, and (2) qualitative research methods fits the needs of social welfare discipline regarding developing endogenous knowledge. In discussing the utilities, this paper focuses that qualitative research methods can be more properly utilized for social welfare research because there are coincidences in basic assumptions and perspectives of both qualitative research methods and social welfare practice. Finally, this paper highlights that 'many ways of knowing' exist in social science and it should be considered more sincerely in the arena of Korean social welfare research in order to more solidly develop the knowledge body of social welfare and practice in Korea.

  • Online firms collect consumers' private information, which serves as a valuable database for marketing activities. In order to encourage consumers to provide their private information, online firms offer high quality websites for consumers who provide private information. However, identity theft, phishing, and pharming, become critical social issues, consumers started to avoid providing their private information to online firms. Thus, consumers often provide false or limited information, which lacks value for practical use for the online firms. • The purpose of this research is to examine that internal virtue (i.e. virtue between organizational members) and external virtue (i.e. virtue between organizational members and external members) positively associate with job performance when considering organizational identification, positive work-related identity, affective commitment, emotional exhaustion, and collective self-esteem as mediators. Virtue in organization has received attention as critical attribute of positive organizational scholarship. Cameron(2003) defined the study of virtue as a study of the capacity, attributes, and reserve in organization that facilitates the expression of positive deviance among organization member. In addition, this study contributes to the qualitative investigation on how internal giving virtue (i.e. the employees' virtue for their organization), internal receiving virtue (i.e. virtue employees receive from their organization), external giving virtue (i.e. the organization's virtue for society), and external receiving virtue (i.e. virtue the organization receives from society), used as independent variables, influence job performance after creating research model for the four virtuous behaviors through qualitative research. Therefore, this research contributes to the creation of research model for virtuous behaviors within organizations and virtuous behaviors with external members through qualitative study and sheds light on how these variables influence job performance by virtue of qualitative research.

  • This qualitative study is designated to explore the reality of social welfare related to the co-occurence of domestic violence and child maltreatment in Korea. "Alone and Together" is elicited as the main theme from the analysis of social workers' experiences with the co-occurence problem in the two fields of domestic violence and child maltreatment. Despite the fact that the social workers are aware of the co-occurence problem embedded in their field cases, they don't assess and intervene with the problem on set purpose. Each field has dealt with the problem according to the field priority for either women or children separately. However, the social workers in the both fields desire alternatives effective for their cooperation and linkage to each other when confronted with the intersection of interdependent needs and problem-solving for the woman and the child. The development of multi-level research, assessment tools, and compulsory education courses for practitioners related to the co-occurence problem is suggested.
