  • In consumer research area, familiarity has been frequently mentioned with relation to customers' product information processing and choice behavior. However, the familiarity has been utilized initially in this paper to examine if the relationship between consumers' evaluations of attributes of an internet shopping mall and their inquiry and purchase intentions on there is affected significantly by the degree of familiarity. The results have shown that the relationship between levels of the safety, the functional convenience, and the tangibility attribute of an internet shopping mall and consumers' willingness to inquire about/purchase products on there is affected significantly by the degree of familiarity. Interestingly, the relationship between the tangibility attribute of a mall and customers' inquiry willingness on there is not impacted significantly by the familiarity. Thus, we conclude that our model and hypotheses have been supported quite strongl.

  • Recently, companies that have already the brand familiarity based on IT technology are changing the way of financial transactions by providing mobile simple payment service. It is difficult to apply the results of research conducted on traditional financial products, although the familiarity of the brand positively affects the brand attitude and intention of use in the preceding studies. To confirm this, this study verified whether mobile simple payment services of a company with high brand familiarity can copy the service easily and have intention of use through advertisement acceptance. The empirical results showed that the advertising of brand with high familiarity could be a motivation factor to imitate new services more easily. This results is meaningful in that it confirms the importance of strategic advertising because the more higher the brand's familiarity is, the more efficient the advertising can be used in the mobile simple payment service.

A survey was conducted to the Korean tourists departing to China at the In-Cheon international airport, which results in collecting 305 usable questionnaires. The results show that the perceived familiarity toward China positively affects the degree of preference to China as a tourism destination. As to the impacts of familarity on the perceived risks, the results reveal that the degree of familarity is negatively associated with several risk perceptions. Lastly, the degree of perceived familiarity is positively related to the one type of preferred tourist activity, visiting nature historical sites. The results of this study support the role of familiarity as a significant factor in understanding other tourist perceptions.

  • Rock mass classification methods such as RMR and Q system have different characteristics each other in parameters considered and applications, and so it is very important to prescribe the relationship between parameters for the analysis of correlativity of these methods. With the Held data of RMR and Q estimation in road construction sites, the acquaintance relations between RMR and Q of rock mass classifications are analyzed. The correlation equations between parameters of RMR and Q, matrix of correlation coefficients and the generalized form of acquaintance relation matrix are derived. This acquaintance relation matrix can be further extended to the form of generalized acquaintance relation network, and could be used to analyze the correlativity and to enhance the utility of common rock mass classification methods.

  • A common assumption in marketing channel is that assortment benefits consumers. Recent research, however, has suggested that increasing the size of the choice set may have adverse consequences on the consumer choice. This research is to identify several factors that could affect the consumer choice in the context of product assortment. Especially, this research focus on the influence of the number of alternatives on the likelihood of purchase from the choice set. The preference for the no-choice option decreases as the number of alternatives increases. And it becomes higher when a dominating alternatives is present. And familiarity are considered as a factor affecting consumer's preference for a no-choice option. When a dominating alternatives is present, there is a positive and significant interaction between familarity and choice set size. It concludes with a discussion of the implications of the research findings and directions for future research.

  • Psychological distance refers to the perceived gap between a stimulus and a person's direct experience and its activation influences the decisions and actions that the person makes towards the stimulus. We investigated whether the level of familiarity affects the construction of psychological distance. Specifically, we hypothesized that a familiar stimulus, relative to an unfamiliar stimulus, is perceived to be psychologically closer to the observer and so its perception might be modulated by the perceived spatial distance. The familiarity of stimuli was manipulated in terms of preexposure frequency and preexposure perceptual fluency. In experiments, participants were first exposed with three nonsense words in a lexical decision task. The nonsense words were presented in nonword trials with different levels of frequency (frequent vs. rare, Experiment 1) or with different levels of visibility (less blurred vs. more blurred, Experiment 2). Participants then performed a distance Stroop task with the most familiar and the least familiar nonwords. Each of them appeared in either proximal or distant spatial locations in scenes with clear depth cues. The results showed a significant interaction between the word familiarity and the spatial distance: the familiar word was judged faster in proximal locations but slower in distant locations relative to the unfamiliar word. The current findings suggest that metacognitive evaluation of familiarity could be one of the critical factors that underlie the construction of psychological distance.
