Revitalization Plan of Calligraphy in Outdoor Store Sign Design - Focus on the District of Gyeyang at Incheon - (옥외간판디자인에서 캘리그라피 활성화 방안 - 인천시 계양구 중심으로 -)

  • In the current so-called age of emotion marketing, the independent form of handwriting of calligraphy is being revitalized in various fields such as advertising, book designs, film titles, posters, packages, BI, and even fashion. Thus centered on Gyeyang-gu at the city of Incheon, 100 outdoors signs that used calligraphy were chosen and we researched a reform plan that could revitalize calligraphy in outdoor signs by classifying them according to current conditions of the use of calligraphy, actual conditions of practical use, expression tools, and analyzing the use of colors. The result was trial requests not only from the formalities industry, but also the financial sector, public corporations, and several other businesses, but in order to provide not only for franchise brand logotypes manufactured by expensive experts, but also provide production of high-quality calligraphy for low costs for small private enterprises, the development of a diverse calligraphy education program, centered on the regional society, will be needed. In the midst of globalization, in order to advertise the beauty of Korean alphabet and to create our own unique street culture, a variety of tools and tactile expressions are demanded, in the future the research on the calligraphy of outdoor signs must be revitalized.

A Study on the Characteristics and Utility of Oriental Calligraphy Technique (동양적 캘리그라피 기법의 특성과 활용에 관한 연구)

  • Nowadays calligraphy technique is widely utilized in diverse areas throughout the world. It is adopted in the visual environment of modern people comprehending from graphic design areas such as advertisement, package, symbol marks, logotypes, and movie posters to modern abstract paintings. It is because its dynamic and suggestive power of expression as symbolic and kinetic representation has been appreciated anew. In response to modern people's aversion from the mechanical and artificial digital environment as well as from the uniform, official, and modernistic trend, calligraphy technique is attracting people's attention as a new expressive style with oriental mysticism and emotional intimacy. Therefore, this study aims at illuminating the history of calligraphy, understanding its characteristics, searching for the expanded value of modern paintings and graphic designs, and ultimately contributing to the propagation of visual languages and expressive styles. In addition, this study attempted to establish the concept of Calli-Illust, which combines oriental painting techniques and materials and calligraphy techniques, and to explore for its potential uses in order to expand the area of illustration. According to the results of this study, calligraphy technique is a painting style of abstract expressionism, contributing to the expansion of the territory of a new formative area. Furthermore, this study proved that it is necessary to develop new expressive styles to overcome the limitation of design styles based on western rational, logical, and geometric functionalism, which have been received uncritically in the design environment of diversity. What is more, the concept and definition of calli-illust, which has been understood as a part of the concept of calligraphy so far, were clarified Research on calli-illust is just in its beginning stage. The present researcher expects that deeper and more extensive studies will be carried out in the future, so that calli-illust can be applied to communication design in various ways.

A Raster Image Scaling Method focused on Calligraphy (캘리그라피에 특화된 래스터 이미지 확대 방법)

  • Recently, calligraphy has become popular because people focused on emotion. The strokes, dots, swoops, cracks and shading are the calligraphy factors for expressing various emotions such as joy, anger, sorrow, and delight. However, the emotion which is expressed by cracks and shading can be destroyed in the digital work when the calligraphy is used for a variety sizes of prints. Professionals work with high-resolution images which are obtained through the scanner, however normal users should work with low-resolution images taken with the smart phone for calligraphy image editing. We propose a raster image scaling method focused on calligraphy that maintains the emotion with cracks and shading, when normal users use the low-resolution calligraphy images in the digital work. The method recolors aliasing boundary of enlarged rasterized image. When recolored by our method, our method decreases aliasing by using the image gradient method, vivify calligraphy images, and maintains the emotion in cracks and shading by using the alpha value.

  • Chinese has the biggest user in the world, is not only used to contact but also has ample cultural value and beautiful modeling. So it's widely used in our life. The Chinese character which is used in the T-shirt has a strong ability of transmit the information on the language. And it has a strong personality on the model too. It's more and more popular over the years with young people. The main objective of this research is to collect the structure data of Chinese character and the illustration of apply Chinese character on T-shirt between China and American. The second is to compare and analyze the number, construction, script, size, place, color, expression of the character. The others is to investigate the illustration of apply character on fashion design. And take the various manifestation of character as the foundation to put forward some new design project of apply Chinese character on the T-shirt.

  • 본 연구는 한글 캘리그라피에서 보여지는 문자 형태의 감정적 표현, 문자 의미의 형상적 표현, 한자체와의 이미지 혼합의 표현등으로 분류하여 심미성과 차별성 있는 디자인 가치를 연구하고자한 것이다. 한글의 예술적 독창성과 한글 캘리그라피의 문화적 실용성이 결합된 창의적 생성물을 만드는 것은 중요하다. 따라서 한국의 전통글씨를 현대적으로 재해석한 실용과 미감이 풍부한 서체를 분석하고 문화원형의 대표성을 확인하고자 한다.

  • 시대와 문화마다 사용되는 문자와 그것을 표현하는 도구가 다르게 나타나지만 공통적인 특징은 의사소통과 기록을 그 목적으로 한다는 것이다. 그리고 원활한 의사소통을 위하여 시각화시킨 글자는 연상을 통해 특정적인 상징의 의미를 떠올리게 되고 시각화시킨 도구 또한 이미지 연상에 영향을 끼치게 된다. 본 연구에서는 글자를 시각화시키는 캘리그라피의 표현도구가 글자의 형태를 벗어나 도구 자체로써 수용자에게 어떠한 이미지를 연상시키는지 알아보기 위하여 진행되었다.

  • Consumer's buying loyalty for goods can be changed by exposure to new stimulus, so different with others and esthetical packaging design is necessary for drawing the eyes of consumer at this time. In this study, we made up a questionnaire and analyzed thirties who is judged as a substantial consumer for recognition of newly launched seasoning packaging design. They answered there is no specific character comparatively in existing seasoning packaging design and gave a high appraisal on symbolism of calligraphy logotype which is produced by attributes but got a low appraisal on readability. And they appraised Cheong-jeong-won Maat-seon-saeng higher than Da-si-da San-deul-e on safety, quality preservation, and exhibitivity and chose safety and preservation among those as essential element inducing to buy.
