  • This study aims to track pedestrian behavior in urban linear tourist sites and to analyse their behavioral characteristics. For these purposes, this study has adopted the direct observation, a behavioral tracking methodology, and selected Chenggyecheon in Seoul as the study site, a representative site of urban regeneration. The main results of this study can be summarized as follows: the period of stay and movement distance of pedestrians in the study area are both short and most pedestrian activities, apart from walking, are of a passive nature, such as pitching pennies, reading signs, resting and the like. Spatial points of Chenggyecheon at which pedestrians have exhibited these behaviors during their stay are summarized as 30 points and classified into 3 types: landmarks, bridges and nodes. Further research that combines several tracking methods in terms of urban pedestrian behavior is needed.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the tourists' circulations and behaviors at one of the representative dark tourism sites in Seoul, named Seodaemun Prison History Hall. This study conducts direct observation and behaviour tracking or follow-up survey based on traffic circulation and visitors' Muse-Ethogram extracted from the previous studies. The result of tourists' actual circulations shows that main tourists' flows of study areas consist of 3 approaches; suggested, unstructured and directed approaches. And tourists' behaviors such as moving(M), stop looking(SL), and reading(RE) reveal with the highest frequency. This study finds the 'expressing feeling(EXP)' as a new visitor' behavior in dark tourism site. The highest frequency of visitors' movement patterns is stop looking-reading-move(SL-RE-M). The results of this study could be used as a planning and design guidelines of dark tourism related to exhibition circulation, visitors' behaviors and development of exhibition content.

  • The position information of individual vehicles on a road at every time instant can be used to analyze the microscopic behaviors of driving of each vehicle. The limited information obtained from previous imaging technology such as traffic volume and interval velocity cannot be used to explore such microscopic traffic conditions. Also, information gathering for the microscopic behaviors by manual analysis of captured video takes large amount of time and man-power. In the paper we develop the rule-based vehicle tracking technology from which the position information of individual vehicles on a road at every time instant can be automatically obtained. Also, we extract the position data of driving vehicles on a road, length of 130m for every 0.05 second, and calculate the velocity of each traced vehicles to compare with the real velocity for the verification of accuracy. In the future, this type of tracking techniques based on video analysis can be widely used to provide the practically important information of road traffic conditions and to analyze the academically important microscopic behaviors of driving patterns.

  • Automatic tracking of vehicles is important to accurately estimate the traffic information including vehicle speeds in video-based traffic measurement systems. Because of the limited field of view, the range of visual tracking with a single camera is restricted. In order to enlarge the tracking range for better chance of monitoring the vehicle behaviors, a tracking with consecutive multiple video sequences is necessary. This parer proposes a carefully designed rule-based vehicle racking scheme and apply it for the tracking for two well synchronized video sequences. In the scheme, almost all possible cases that can appear in the video-based vehicle tracking are considered to make rules. Also, the rule based scheme is augmented with Kalman filter. The result of tracking can be successfully used to collect data such as temporal variation of vehicle speed and behavior of individual vehicle behaviors in the enlarged tracking region.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze library space use patterns through users' smartphone WiFi. This study is applied a method to detect WiFi signal of users' smartphone to analyze the in-library wayfinding of users. The library usage data were collected for four months in a library in Seoul, Korea. The results show that the average 37.9% of library users revisits the library the next month. Half of users stay under 7 minutes in the library. Users mainly visit the library between 2 and 3 o'clock, and few users visit the library after 5 pm on weekends. The floor moving pattern result shows that the co-visit rate between the third and fourth floor is higher than others, in that these two floors are mainly composed of book shelves. These results indicate that the method to detect the WiFi signal for spatial pattern analysis could be more effective than observation which was used in previous research. It, therefore, is expected that this method would be applied in other libraries to analyze and enhance the library space usage.

  • Background/Aims: Behavioral factors, such as smoking and heavy alcohol consumption, increase the risk of gastric cancer (GC), but their effects on survival are not clear. We examined associations between prediagnostic smoking and alcohol drinking behavior and GC death by long-term follow-up. Methods: The participants were 508 GC patients enrolled at Chungnam University Hospital and Hanyang University Guri Hospital from 2001 to 2006. Information on clinicopathologic and behavioral risk factors was collected, and patient survival was prospectively followed until 2016 by medical chart review and telephone survey. Results: During above 10 years follow-up period, overall death was 46.2% (n=226) and GC deaths was 38.2% (n=187) among the 489 GC patients included in the analysis. No significant association was found between smoking habits and overall or GC survival. However, after stratification by histological type, the hazard ratio (HR) of GC death for current smokers tended to be higher for the diffuse type (HR 1.61, 95% CI 0.57-4.59 for current vs. never) rather than for the intestinal type (HR 0.78, 95% CI 0.28-2.19 for current vs. never). Light alcohol consumption was found to be associated with a significantly lower risk of GC death (HR 0.52, 95% CI 0.36-0.75 for <20 g/day for women or <40 g/day for men vs. never and past), and the effects of alcohol drinking habits had similar effects on GC death for the intestinal and diffuse types. Conclusions: These results suggest smoking and alcohol drinking behaviors before a diagnosis of GC are weakly associated with GC survival. Nevertheless, the effect of smoking behavior on prognosis appears to depend on the histological type of GC.

  • As the fact that science is the driving force behind technological development and that technological innovation contributes to economic development has been proved empirically convincing, the interaction between science and technology is highly emphasized in advanced countries. But, Korea has not been active in conducting research on science-based technological development and on the scientific fields that have strong relationships with Korean technology. This study attempts to explore the influence of scientific research papers cited in US patents by Koreans on other US patents and identify the interactions between scientific research papers and patents, by examining the scientific references cited in the Korean-originated US patents.
