  • Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL) have developed a 0.1 nm SASE based FEL based on 10 GeV S-band linear accelerator named PAL-XFEL. At the first stage, PAL-XFEL needs two undulator lines for photon source. The hard X-ray undulator line requires 20 units of 5 m long hybrid-type conventional planar undulator and soft X-ray line requires 7 units of 5 m long hybrid type planar undulators. PAL have developed undulator magnetic structure based on EU-XFEL concepts. In this report, the impact of the background field, alignment issues, the results of pole height tuning, and final magnetic measurement results are summarized.

  • The accuracy of typical dosimeters used around high energy accelerator were proved by dose rate measurements. The experimental neutron spectrum were useful for improving high energy Monte Carlo codes by validating the implemented models. In series of this joint research the experimental data will be upgrade successively. This research program is opened to experts and students in Korea, too.

  • Broadband impedances for the 3-GeV pohang light source-II (PLS-II) storage ring have been numerically estimated using a full three dimensional finite-difference time-domain code, CST particle studio. The total broadband impedance of all the vacuum components was estimated as 0.256 ohm, which is a small fraction of the total machine impedance budget.

  • Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is a powerful detection technique with the exquisite sensitivity and high precision compared with other traditional analytical techniques. Accelerator mass spectrometry can be widely applied in the technique of radiocarbon dating in the fields of archeology, geology and oceanography. The ability of accelerator mass spectrometry to measure rare 14C concentrations in microgram and even sub-microgram amounts suggests that extension of 14C-accelerator mass spectrometry to biomedical field is a natural and attractive application of the technology. Drug development processes are costly, risky, and time consuming. However, the use of 14C-accelerator mass spectrometry allows absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME) studies easier to understand pharmacokinetics of drug candidates. Over the last few decades, accelerator mass spectrometry and its applications to preclinical/clinical trials have significantly increased. For accelerator mass spectrometry analysis of biological samples, graphitization processes of samples are important. In this paper, we present a detailed sample preparation procedure to apply to graphitization of biological samples for accelerator mass spectrometry.

  • This paper attempts to discuss the pseudo-spark which is developed for high voltage and high current. The pseudo-spark switch is on the basic of the Paschen's law. The pseudo-spark switch fabricates the glass chamber. The pseudo-spark switch consists of hollow cathode, hollow anode, and trigger. The pseudo-spark switch is operated at the voltage of 20 kV and the pressure range of $20{\sim}80$ mtorr with He-gas. The switching current of the pseudo-spark switch was measured as 65 kA, and the duration of the pulse was about 100 ${\mu}s$. This paper describes the results of tests and the characteristics of the switch.

  • The purpose of this experiment was to develope Triggered Vacuum Switch (TVS) for the high voltage and high current. The TVS has an array of rods of alternate polarity in which a fixed gap spacing is maintained between the rods. The cross section of each rod has trapezoidal shape. It consists of electrode, ceramic chamber, getter and trigger. Currently, triggered vacuum switch (TVS) with seal-off has been designed and fabricated at PAL. An experimentation and trigger devices for TVS were designed for testing characteristics of electricity. For making the prototype of TVS, it is developed of fabrication process and fined of electrode material. The fabrication of the TVS is a lot of process which have manufacturing of part, chemical clean, ceramic brazing and metal welding. The fabricated TVS is tested of leak for vacuum, hold-off voltage and conditioning of trigger system. The TVS has pinch-off after it is removed of gas in the TVS and activated of getter in degassing furnace. The prototype TVS tested about 20 kV, 75 kA, 83 ${\mu}s$ with 100 kJ capacitor bank and inductance 5 ${\mu}H$. This paper describes the results of tests and the characteristics of the switch.

  • A TVS(triggered vacuum switch) use in high-power, high-current, and high-frequency conversion and switching circuits. The TVS has a six-gap trapezoidal rod electrode system. The electrode system consists of three cathode and anode rods which are made with OFHC. The trigger unit of the TVS is located at the cathode base center. To obtain a wide variety of characteristics this paper describes the results of tests.

  • We designed a 20-MV S-band traveling-wave deflecting structure to measure the bunch length of the electron beams for the PAL-XFEL. Since the start of commissioning of all RF systems of the PAL-XFEL on 12 April 2016, two out of three fabricated structures are currently being operated; one each in the hard X-ray and the soft X-ray branches. These deflecting structures were carefully tuned by using a 4-m-long nodal phase scanner in a precisely temperature and humidity controlled cleanroom considering the phase predictions calculated using RF field solvers. We carried out RF conditioning and beam commissioning with highly-stable high-power S-band RF systems and an EPICS-based control system. We briefly present our design of S-band deflecting structure and discuss the test results, including the results of the RF and the beam measurements.
