  • The Future Wireless Railway Communication System(FWRCS) has attracted attention for the various advantages of such a system like efficient management, precise periodicity of operation and speedy travel. Related to it, the area of bandwidth requirement estimation for the FWRCS is being researched actively because there is a great need for accurate bandwidth distribution. In this paper, sophisticated bandwidth requirement estimation method for FWRCS is proposed by modifying ITU-R M.1390. With this method, the expected frequency requirements for the present, for five years from now, and for 10 years from now can be calculated by applying the data gathered from the actual field.

  • Estimation of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is an important problem in wireless communication systems. It has been studied for various constellation types and channels using different estimation techniques. Maximum likelihood estimation is a technique which provides efficient and in most cases unbiased estimators. In this paper, we have applied maximum likelihood estimation for systems employing square or cross QAM signals which are undergoing slow flat Rayleigh fading. The problem has been considered under various scenarios like data-aided (DA), non-data-aided (NDA) and partially data-aided (PDA) and the performance of each type of estimator has been evaluated and compared. It has been observed that the performance of DA estimator is best due to usage of pilot symbols, with the drawback of greater bandwidth consumption. However, this can be catered for by using partially data-aided estimators whose performance is better than NDA systems with some extra bandwidth requirement.

  • This paper presents an adaptive rate control scheme for streaming-based content sharing service. This scheme delivers multimedia contents from a user device to another device or seamlessly redirects streaming service across heterogeneous user devices. In the proposed scheme, a streaming server adjusts video quality level according to the network and client status. Our scheme is different from other rate control schemes, because the video quality at the server is decided not only based on the available bandwidth, but also based on the device characteristics and bandwidth requirement at the access network. We also propose a bandwidth estimation method to achieve more equitable bandwidth allocations among streaming flows competing for the same narrow link with different Round Trip Times (RTTs). Through the simulation, we prove that our scheme improves the network stability and the quality of streaming service by appropriately adjusting the quality of the video stream. The simulation results also demonstrate the ability of the proposed scheme in ensuring RTT-fairness while remaining throughput efficient.

  • It is very important thing to search a practicable transmission bandwidth which can aim the upper limit of code rate in urban mobile communications. Usually, the measurement method of analysing the practicable transmission bandwidth can be conducted by Fourier transform analysis for the measured time delay distribution data. But this measuring method is very difficult because of the requirement of synchronization between the transmit and receiving end. Another method of deciding the practicable transmission bandwidth is to utilize the frequency correlation coefficient calculated from the two field strength signals with each different frequencies. This calculating method of frequency correlation coefficients is also not so good recommendable method because of its incorrectness due to the characteristic of field strength distribution. In this paper, we proposed and analyzed the standard deviation value calculated from difference decibel value between the two field strength signals with each different frequencies. From the simulation results, it can be seen that the dB standard deviation value of received signal strength is suitable estimation parameter because the dB standard deviation values can be correctly indicated a proportional value from 7.18 to 0.37 due to the variation ratio of directed wave components(-30~+20dB).

  • The main feature of H.264 standard against conventional video standards is the high coding efficiency and the network friendliness. In spite of these outstanding features, it is not easy to implement H.264 codec as a real-time system due to its high requirement of memory bandwidth and intensive computation. Although the variable block size motion compensation using multiple reference frames is one of the key coding tools to bring about its main performance gain, it demands substantial computational complexity due to SAD (Sum of Absolute Difference) calculation among all possible combinations of coding modes to find the best motion vector. For speedup of motion estimation process, therefore, this paper proposes fast algorithms for both integer-pel and fractional-pel motion search. Since many conventional fast integer-pel motion estimation algorithms are not suitable for H.264 having variable motion block sizes, we propose the motion field adaptive search using the hierarchical block structure based on the diamond search applicable to variable motion block sizes. Besides, we also propose fast fractional-pel motion search using small diamond search centered by predictive motion vector based on statistical characteristic of motion vector.
