  • The configuration of the main components and the physical structure of the Taguchi sensor, the first ceramic gas sensor mass produced, has remained virtually unaltered since its appearance 40 years ago. This device owns an excellent combination of the quality factors but is non-selective. The research efforts carried out to enhance the selectivity in this resistive gas sensor are briefly reviewed. A novel design, Capillary-attached Gas Sensor (CGS), is introduced, which employs the same ceramic components used for the fabrication of a classical Taguchi sensor but in altered geometries. CGS presents remarkable advantages from the view point of selectivity over the original design. While the steady state response of a CGS has the same significance as that of the Taguchi sensor, its transient response presents valuable diagnostic information. Fabrication and test of a prototype CGS is reported.

  • Leak-before-break(LBB) approach has been shown to be both cost effective and risk reductive when applied to high energy Piping in nuclear Power Plants. For the Korean Next Generation Reactor (KNGR) development, LBB application is considered for the Main Steam Line(MSL) piping inside containment. Unlike the primary system leakages, the MSL leak detection systems must be based on principles other than radioactivity measurements. Among humidity, heat and acoustic noise currently being considered as indicators of leakage, we explored humidity as an effective one and developed ceramic-based humidity sensor which can be qualified for LBB applications. The ceramic material, sintered and annealed MgCr$_2$O$_4$-TiO$_2$, is shown to increase its electrical conductivity drastically upon water vapor adsorption over the entire temperature range of interest. With this ceramic sensor specimen, we suggested installation-inside-the-piping method by which we can detect leakage more rapidly and sensitively. In this paper, we describe the progress in the development and characterization of ceramic humidity sensor for the LBB application to the MSL of KNGR.

  • It is well known that the degradation of transformer oil conseqently lead to the failure of transformer. This paper discussed the characteristics of the degradation sensor checking transformer oil condition in live line. The degadation sensor is composed of base ring, electrodes and porous ceramic, passed through the transformer oil and checks the transformer oil condition through sensor's leakage current. So it is important to minimize the leakage current of base ring and connection parts. To investigate the leakage current of base ring and connection parts the characteristics of V-T-I and DC 2 KV and other examinations were performed. It is verified that ionized transformer oil caused by the expansion of temperature increases in the leakage current of porous ceramic sensor. It is certification that the leakage current of other parts of porous ceramic is very small(about 2%) compared with the porous ceramic body and it is confirmed that the leakage current in porous ceramic is changed sensitively according to the new oil(NO) and and the degradation oil(DO).

  • It is well known that the degradation transformer oil is mainly effected to the failure of transformer. In this paper it is discussed the characteristics of the degradation sensor checking transformer oil condition in live line. • Flexible impact force sensors composed of piezoelectric PZT/PDMS composite sandwiched between Al/PET films were fabricated and their voltage signal characteristics were evaluated under varying impact forces for electronic mitt applications. The piezoelectric impact force sensor on an ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) substrate exhibited an output voltage difference of no greater than 40 mV a periodical impact test in with the impact load was increased by as much as 240 N by a restoration time of 5 s in a five-time experiment, implying good sensing ability. Moreover, the impact force sensor embedded four electronic mitts showed a reliable sensitivity of less than 1 mV/N and good repeatability under 100 N-impact force during a cycle test executed 10,000 times. This indicated that the fabricated flexible piezoelectric impact sensor could be used in electronic mitt applications. However, the relatively low elastic limit of substrate material such as EVA or poly-urethane slightly deteriorated the sensitivity of the impact sensor embedded electronic mitt at over 200 N-impact forces.

  • A self-powered piezoelectric energy harvester was developed for the application in wireless sensor node. The energy harvester was evaluated with power generation characteristics for the wireless sensor node for structural diagnosis of the electric power system. The self-powered wireless sensor node was set to measure temperature, vibration frequency of the electric power system. A piezoelectric harvester composed of 7 uni-morph cantilevers (functionalized as 6 generators and 1 vibration sensor) was connected to be an array and revealed to produce significantly high output power of approximately 10 mW at 120 Hz under 3.4 g((1 g = $9.8m/sec^2$). The wireless sensor node could work as the electric power generated by the developed piezoelectric harvester.

  • In this paper, we fabricated ceramic body and sapphire wafer in order to develop a hydraulic pressure sensor with high sensitivity and high temperature stability. The sapphire wafer was adopted with a membrane of capacitance ceramic pressure sensor. The capacitance value of the sensor for the finite element analysis(FEM) showed a linear pressure characteristics. Membrane was processed with a diameter of 32.4 mm and a thickness of 1 mm by using alumina powders. Ceramic body was processed with a diameter 32.4 mm and a thickness 5 mm. The capacitance pressure sensor was made with high heat treatment of the ceramic body and the sapphire wafer. Initially capacitance of the pressure sensor was 50 pF and a capacitance of 110 pF was measured from 5 bar pressure. Output voltage of 5 V was appeared at 5 bar pressure.

  • The present study describes the considerations on the long-term reliability of the on-line partial discharge (PD) ceramic sensor for thermal power generators. Voltage acceleration aging tests were carried out under continuous and impulsive thermal aging at more than $100^{\circ}C$, considering the practical service environment. Experimental results show that the sensors have a life that could last for more than 100 years, excellent dielectric characteristics, and insulation strength. In addition, the ceramic on-line PD sensors were installed in a thermal power generator in Korea for demonstration. The results of the PD calibration and test voltage application prove that the on-line ceramic sensors have satisfactory performances for on-line PD measurement.

  • In this paper, we presents the construction details and output characteristics of a thick film piezoresistive strain gage. The thick film was printed on the ceramic diaphragm back side by screen printing and cured at 850$^{\circ}C$. The strain distribution and deflection on ceramic diaphragm were performed with finite-element method(FEM tool ANSYS-5.3). Various thick film strain gage characteristics were analysed, including nonlinearity, hysteresis, stability and sensitivity of thick film strain gages.

  • This paper describes fabrication and characteristics of ceramic pressure sensor for working at high temperature. The proposed pressure sensor consists of a Ta-N thin-film, patterned on a Wheatstone bridge configuration, sputter deposited onto thermally oxidized Si membranes with an aluminium interconnection layer. The fabricated pressure sensor presents a low temperature coefficient of resistance, high sensitivity, low non-linearity and excellent temperature stability The sensitivity is 1.097∼1.21 mV/V$.$kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in the temperature range of 25∼200$^{\circ}C$ and the maximum non-linearity is 0.43 %FS.
