Antioxidant and Anticancer Activities of Water Extracts from Ceramium kondoi (비단풀 물 추출물의 항산화력 및 항암활성)

  • The present study describes the preliminary evaluation of the antioxidant activity and the cytotoxic effect of Ceramium kondoi. The antioxidant activities and cytotoxic effect of the water extracts were evaluated by total phenolic contents (TPC), DPPH radical scavenging activity (RSA), reducing power (RP), comet assay, and MTT reduction assay. TPC, DPPH RSA, and RP of the extract at the concentration of $1,000{\mu}g/mL$ was $659.2{\mu}M$, 86.0%, and 1.084, respectively, and those were concentration dependent. The $200{\mu}M\;H_2O_2-induced$DNA damage was inhibited by C. kondoi water extract in a dose dependent manner in human leukocytes. The inhibition was by 62.3, 39.8, 24.8% and 16.4% at the concentration of 5, 10, $25{\mu}g/mL$ and $50{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Cytotoxic activity on HT-29 cells and MCF-7 cells of the C. kondoi water extract at the concentration of $10{\mu}g/mL$ was 49% and 60%, respectively. These results strongly support the possibility of C. kondoi as a source of natural functional materials.

Immunological Relationship Based on Phycerythrin in Campylaephora crassa, Rhodophyta and Its Related Species (홍조식물 굵은석묵(Campylaephora crassa)과 근연종의 Phycoerythrin에 의한 면역학적 유연관계)

  • Phycoerythrins from the ceramiaceous red algae Campylaephora crassa (Okamura) Nakamura and related species, C. hypnaeoides J. Agardh and Ceramium kondoi Yendo, were investigated for absorption spectra, protein bands by gel electrophoresis and antigenic reactivity to anti-phycoerythrin using Ouchterlony double diffusion and immunoblot. Similarities in absorption spectra, showing peaks at ca. 566 nm>534 nm>495 nm, were found between C. crassa and Cm. kondoi, while C. hypnaeoides differed slightly. There were no differences in fluorescence emission spectra and protein bands between C. crassa and related species tested. Since Ouchterlony double diffusion, however, showed that phycoerythrins from C. crassa and Cm. kondoi were similar in antigenic reactions, and differed from that of C. hypnaeoides, the taxonomic position of C. crassa should be reinvestigated using other experimental approaches.

  • Seaweeds often provide both habitat and food for several groups of animals (Brawley, 1992). Tide pools constitute a remarkable feature that community structures of seaweeds and animals are different from those of intertidal zone. Neorhodomela auculeata(Perestenko) Masuda and Ceramium kondoi Yendo grow in tide pools where Littorina sp. is abundant (Lee et al., 2000). (omitted)

Effects of the moisturizing cream containing yellowish natural colorants on the skin improvement (황색계 천연색소 추출물이 함유된 보습크림의 피부개선 효과)

  • This study was to evaluate the effect of the moisturizing cream containing five kinds of plants extracts for human facial improvements such as hydrating ability, transepidermal water loss and erythema reaction. The antioxidant activities of yellowish natural colorants, extracted from five kinds of plants (Ceramium kondoi, Phellodendron amurense, Carthamus tinctorius, Gardenia jasminoides for. grandiflora and Aphis chinensis) were tested. Twenty-one volunteers were subjected to analyze the effects, and each result was determined by treating the complex cream containing plants extracts on their skin in three times. The moisture content on skin was significantly increased more than 50% by treating the cream containing five kinds of plants extracts. The transepidermal water loss was reduced and the level of the skin erythema reaction was improved after treatment of the complex cream. Survey analysis showed that the volunteers had highly satisfaction on the tested creams. The results suggest that the complex cream containing five plants extracts had an improved effect on facial skin, and therefore can be used as moisturizing ingredients in the related industry.
