  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were as follows; 1) To review the definitions of critical thinking from various perspectives, 2) To examine the critical thinking measurements throughout nursing research, and 3) To review the nursing studies with regard to critical thinking. Methods: This study was a literature review with regard to the critical thinking in nursing in aspects of conceptual meaning, measurements, and research. Results: The definition of critical thinking in nursing included decision making in clinical setting, inference with logical construct to increase nursing quality, interpretation in the context, and evaluation. The critical thinking was a core concept, which meant not only simple nursing process, but included decision making ability. The critical thinking has been conceptualized by both critical thinking disposition and skill. However, there was no nursing specified critical thinking measurement. Critical thinking research has been conducted to describe critical thinking disposition and critical thinking, to determine relationships between critical thinking and clinical competency, and to evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs. Conclusion: The instruments for measuring critical thinking disposition and skill that contain cultural difference and clinical specificity need to be developed to measure critical thinking and increase it.

  • Purpose: The descriptive-correlational study was undertaken in order to investigate the relationships between critical thinking disposition and critical thinking skill in clinical nurses. Methods: A convenience sample of 50 registered nurses was obtained from E University Hospital. The instruments used in this study were general characteristics, California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI) and California Critical Thinking Skill Test(CCTST) developed by Facione & Facione (1994). The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test and Pearson's Correlation Coefficient with SPSS 12.0 Program. Results: 1) There was a statistically significant difference in critical thinking disposition according to age (F=3.23, p=.03) and educational background (F=39.07, p=.00). 2) There was a statistically significant difference in critical thinking skill according to age (F=3.40, p=.02), educational background(F=32.51, p=.00), and period of professional nursing experience(F=3.56, p=.02). Conclusion: A significant positive correlation between critical thinking disposition and critical thinking skill was found(r=.68, p=.00). Critical thinking disposition and critical thinking skill according to age and educational background had statistically significant differences. Therefore, it is needed to emphasize the necessity of continuous education and training of nurses which prepare their critical thinking ability.

  • The aim of this research is to develop a 'program which improves critical thinking' to improve elementary school students' mathematical thinking, and investigate the effect of program by applying and verifying the program. In order to achieve the objective, the author determined the factors of critical thinking capabilities matched to the discipline of mathematics, and accordingly designed relevant programs and test questions for critical thinking skills which contributes to improving the critical thinking of elementary school students, and thus applied the program the developed program of improving the critical thinking to both preliminary and main experiments, which verified the effects of the test method. The following results have been acquired through this research : In the preliminary inspection that this researcher has developed, it was able to predict that 'the program which improves critical thinking' would have a positive influence on the students' critical thinking. In the main experiment which was performed after modifying and supplementing it, the result showed that the program had a positive influence on the students' critical thinking.

Method: The convenience sample was drawn from 472 nursing students. Instruments used in this study were made California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory developed by Facione & Facione (1994). Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test with SAS 6.12 program. Result: 1. The total mean score of critical thinking disposition was 279.06. Inquisitiveness was the highest with an mean score 45.50, while systematicity was the lowest with mean score of 36.15. There was a statistically significant difference in critical thinking disposition(F=14.36, p=.00)according to senior nursing students in three types of nursing programs. 2. There was a statistically significant difference in critical thinking disposition(F=5.53, p=.00) according to age, marital status(t=-3.15, p=.00), religion(F=3.26, p=.02) and critical thinking course taken previously(t=3.10, p=.00). Conclusion: There was a statistically significant difference in critical thinking disposition(F=14.36, p=.00) according to senior nursing students in three types of nursing program. There was a statistically significant difference in Critical thinking disposition according to age, marital status, religion, logic, philosophy, critical thinking course.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine self esteem, self efficacy and critical thinking disposition of college students. Method: A descriptive survey method was used in this study. Data were collected from May to August, 2008, from 486 college students. The survey sheet was composed of questions on self esteem, self efficacy, and critical thinking disposition. Result: The average score of self esteem, self efficacy, and critical thinking disposition was 2.99, 2.80, and 3.99 respectively. There were positive correlations between self esteem and critical thinking disposition, between self efficacy and critical thinking disposition, and between self esteem and self efficacy. Self esteem and self efficacy were significant predictors of critical thinking disposition. Conclusion: In order to help college students adopt to a rapidly changing society, the university should make efforts to develop a curriculum and program for improving self esteem, self efficacy and critical thinking disposition.

  • The primary purpose of this paper is to examine critically the theory of critical thinking proposed by the late Professor Young-Jung Kim. He defined the basic properties of critical thinking as active reflectivity, and listed deepness, multilaterality and domain-transitivity as primary properties for which critical thinking aims. He, then, pursued how critical thinking can be merged with creativity and proposed the concept 'critico-creative thinking'. I argue that his theory of critical thinking has some limitation, but we can develop his critico-creative thinking further.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of critical thinking dispositions on vocational personalities in university students. Subjects were 111 University students in Busan. The questionnaire used in this research were Holland's Vocational Personality Questionnaire and California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory. The results were analyzed by correlation analysis and enter multiple regression using the SPSS statistical package (SPSS for windows 12.0; SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). The study results were as follow: First, the students had much more S and R vocational personality characteristics than the others in vocational personality characteristics and had higher inquisitiveness and self-confidence scores than the others in critical thinking dispositions. Second, there were significant relationships between vocational personality types and critical thinking dispositions. Third, some of the vocational personality types were affected by the critical thinking dispositions. Especially I, E, and C personality of vocational personalities were prospected by critical thinking dispositions. Therefore, It's necessary that we understand the relationships between vocational personality types and critical thinking dispositions. Also we have to think over how to development career programs for university students to match to the learner's vocational personality type and critical thinking dispositions.

  • This study examined how a Structured Reading Framework (SRF) is related to improving students' critical thinking ability in an argument-based inquiry approach, called the Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach. A total of 75 $8^{th}$ graders participated in the study, with 34 in the control group and 41 in the treatment group. The gains in critical thinking skills were compared between two groups, and relationships among the components of the reading framework and the critical thinking skills were explored at the group level. Result indicates that the treatment group who used the SRF had larger gains in critical thinking scores than control group who used the Original Reading Framework (ORF). In addition, results show that the correlations between Reading Framework (RF) components and critical thinking scores are statistically significant in the treatment group, while no correlations exist in the control group. It appears that using the SRF have an impact on developing students' critical thinking ability by providing a scaffold to assist argumentation practice.
