  • The miniaturization of an electrostatic precipitator has become a key element in successfully constructing an efficient electrostatic precipitator because of the limited space allowed for installation in a subway tunnel. Therefore, the miniaturization of the rapping system of the electrostatic precipitator has also become important. This research proposes a resonant-type electromagnetic vibration exciter as a vibrating rapper for an electrostatic precipitator. The compact vibrating rapper removes collected dust from the collecting plates without direct impact on those collecting plates. To characterize the dynamic performance of the electromagnetic vibration exciter, finite element analysis was performed using a commercial electromagnetic analysis program, MAXEWLL. Moreover, we analyzed the resonant frequency of an electrostatic precipitator, to which the electromagnetic vibration exciter was applied, by ANSYS. Also, to measure the acceleration generated by the electromagnetic vibration exciter, we manufactured a prototype of the ESP and electromagnetic vibration exciter and measured its acceleration at the resonant frequency.

Specially, for the construction of industrial electrostatic precipitator, the corporations would send the layout design to a customer to accept an order. Therefore, it is made a detail drawing after accept ance. Since the layout design of electrostatic precipitator is very complex, it takes time and design errors are included. Thus, for competitiveness in these industries, the development of software for the layout design of electrostatic precipitator is important. In this study, the developed software deals with technical concept and layout design of industrial electrostatic precipitator. • In the present study, a numerical analysis on electrohydrodynamics (EHD) of the flow and the collection mechanisms inside a electrostatic precipitator with a spiral spike electrode were investigated. The phenomena of the electrostatic precipitator include complex interactions between the electric field, the fluid flow and the particle motion. To validate the numerical method, the numerical computation for the electric field of a simple wire-pipe type electrostatic system having an analytic solution were performed. Using this numerical method, the electric field of the spiked electrostatic precipitator was simulated. And the fluid flow and the particle motion inside the spiked electrostatic precipitator were numerically analyzed.

  • Incineration is conceptually sound as a waste treatment technology. There is, however, concern over its emissions when it is improperly designed and operated. An electrostatic precipitator is one of the most commonly used devices to control particulate emissions from boilers, incinerators and some other industrial processes. In this work, a modular electrostatic precipitator with sizing of $1m{\times}1m{\times}1m$ was developed for removal of particulate matter from the exhaust gases of a small waste incinerator. Its design was based on a simple wire-and-plate concept. The corona discharge wires were connected to a positive high-voltage pulse generator, while the collection plates were grounded. The high-voltage pulse generator was used to produce the corona discharge field between the individual discharge wire and the collection plate. The particulate-laden exhaust gas flow was directed across the corona discharge field. The charged particles were deflected outward and collected on the plate. The collection efficiency was evaluated as a mass loading ratio between the difference at the inlet and the outlet to the particulate loading at the inlet of the precipitator. The collection efficiency of this modular electrostatic precipitator design was approximately 80 %.

  • The Electrostatic Precipitator is one of the most favorable device of particulate control systems because of the relatively higher collection efficiency and easier operation/maintenance. However, it requires very high initial coat especially for discharging electrodes and collecting plates. In dealing with such problems, development of optimum design can be one of the solutions. In this study, a bench-scale electrostatic precipitator was operated in terms of collection area and corona power, and its performances were analyzed focusing on collection efficiency. A result of this study, a more advanced approach for designing cost-effective precipitator by promoting corona power at a minimized collection area was proposed.

  • In most coal fired power plants, fly ashes collected from each of hoppers in the electrostatic precipitator are transported and stored in a silo. However the properties of the fly ashes collected from each of hoppers in electrostatic precipitator varies with the distance of the collection field from the boiler. The more distance hopper gets fly ash with larger specific surface area. Therefore, in electrostatic precipitator the hopper itself is expected to have the effect of classifying fly ashes. This study examines the physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of fly ash, collected from each of hoppers attached to an electrostatic precipitator in the coal fired power plant and looks into the possibility of the electrostatic precipitator being used as a classifier. Also, the study reviewed the possibility of acquiring high quality fly ash.

  • This study conducts a laboratory measurement on a cylindrical electrostatic precipitator(ESP) with a 30mm-diameter cylinder. Several kinds of test aerosols are generated with an atomizer and a diffusion dryer. The effects of applied voltage, flow state, gas velocity, and gas temperature on the electrical characteristics of the precipitator and onset of corona are experimentally investigated. The corona onset voltage is decreased, as diameter of discharge electrode wire becomes small or temperature of the precipitator increases. As the fluid velocity or particle load in the precipitator increases, the corona current is decreased.
