  • The basic requirements of distributed multimedia systems are intramedia synchronization which asks the strict delay and jitter for the check period of media buffer and the scaling duration with periodic continuous media such as audio and video media, and intermedia synchronization that needs the constraint for relative time relations among them when several media are presented in parallel. In this paper, a distributed intermedia synchronization algorithm that solves the intermedia synchronization problem by using variable service rates based on the fuzzy logic is designed and then the performance is evaluated through simulation.

  • This paper applies WiMedia UWB network into a wireless ship area network (WSAN) so as to support high-quality multimedia services on board and reliable instrument control information as well, since the need for mixed high-quality video traffic and shipboard control data traffic is essential for a high-cost valued digital ship. Thus, in this paper, prioritized contention access (PCA) and distributed reservation protocol (DRP) based on WiMedia UWB (ECMA-368) MAC protocols are combined and proposed to such mixed traffic environment, by varying the portions of superframe according to traffic type. It is shown that the proposed WiMedia UWB MAC protocol can provide reliable mixed video and shipboard control data traffic as well.

  • Based on the actual operating environment of transformer, the aging tests of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) were conducted systematically under four conditions: in air, in transform oil, under compression in air and under compression in transform oil to studythe effect of high temperature, transform oil and compression stress simultaneously on the thermal aging behaviors of nitrile butadiene rubber and predict the lifetime. The effects of liquid media and compression stress simultaneously on the thermal aging behaviors of nitrile butadiene rubber were studied by using characterization methods such as IR spectrosc-opy, thermogravimetric measurements, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) measurements and mechanical property measurements. The changes in physical properties during the aging process were analyzed and compared. Different aging conditions yielded materials with different properties. Aging at $70^{\circ}C$ under compression stress in oil, the change in elongation at break was lower than that aging in oil, but larger than that aging under compression in air. The compression set or elongation at break as evaluation indexes, 50% as critical value, the lifetime of NBR at $25^{\circ}C$ was predicted and compared. When aging under compression in oil, the prediction lifetime was lower than in air and under compression in air, and in oil. It was clear that when predicting the service lifetime of NBR in oil sealing application, compression and media liquid should be involved simultaneously. Under compression in oil, compression set as the evaluation index, the prediction lifetime of NBR was shorter than that of elongation at break as the evaluation index. For the life prediction of NBR, we should take into account of the performance trends of NBR under actual operating conditions to select the appropriate evaluation index.

  • We have proposed an objective evaluation method using ESNR as the measure of approximation by the visual model, which coincides with MOS, a subjective evaluation method. For two-value images, we have used five kinds of modulation methods: 1) ordered dither, 2) least mean error, 3) pulse density low division, 4) simple two-value, and 5) random dither methods. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the validity of ESNR, by comparing the proposed method together with the existing representative methods such as PSNR and WSNR, with the subjective method MOS. The results of a series of experiments show that the ranking by MOS coincides with ESNR, though does not coincides with PSNR and WSNR.

  • The generation of waste cable has been continuously increased as a production of electrical and communication media are extended. The current recovery methods, such as mechanical peeling, incineration, solvent extraction and pyrolysis, seems inadequate because they are either hard to apply in some cases or environmentally unacceptable. It has been shown that copper can be effectively separated from the jelly filled type cables using a soybean oil treatment method. As a result, jelly compound is vanished from the wire by soybean oil bath and waste wires are separated copper and PE by the mechanical chipper. This is a more environmentally friendly method than burning, and considerably faster than Stripping.

  • In this study, we study that the video attributes captured by built-in camera in smart-phone can effect on the quality of PPG signal. The conditions of video attributes were composed of the bitrate, the resolution, the flash. As each condition, we measured a change in the red value of the video image and calculated a PPI(Pulse to Pulse Interval) for extracting the pulse wave signal. 20 subjects participated in the experiment and this experiment was carried out 18 tasks. The PPG signal was measured simultaneously for two minutes with the PPG sensor in the middle finger and Smart-phone in the forefinger of the right hand. By proceeding the correlation analysis, we obtained the highest correlation condition(83%, p=0.01), which the resolution was $640{\times}480$, bitrate was 5000kbps, flash was on. As a result, this study will be a useful guide for quality of signals in the pulse signal measurement system using built-in camera in smart-phone.

  • Objective: This study examines the variables related to eye-activity which could calculate and quantify a user's flow level in three types of smartphone games. Background: The issue of flow level or addiction related to digital media has mushroomed. Method: A total of 25 subjects participated in this experiment. Three different types of smartphone games, utilizing the different flow experiences as defined by user questionnaire, were used for the experiments in this study. We measured the pupil size, blink rate and blink duration of the experiments' participants using an eye-tracking device called FaceLab. Deeper flow experiences corresponded with bigger pupil sizes. Results: The results showed that pupil size and blink rate differed statistically by game type and game time. Puzzle game showed a higher pupil size than dot-to-dot and coloring games. Pupil size showed differed by game time (p<0.05) and large pupil size showed in the final period. Blink rate differed statistically by game time (p<0.01) except game type. Blink duration did not differ statistically by independent variables. Conclusion: A quantitative study of the flow experience could help solve the problem in a measure of media flow level. Despite the spread of digital-media flow level, there have not been many studies on the actual effects of these flow level. Application: To prevent this issue from getting too far out of hand, this study examines different types of mobile games addiction using variables of eye-activity: pupil size, blink rate, and blink duration.

  • Purpose For living donor liver transplantation, liver segmentation is difficult due to the variability of its shape across patients and similarity of the density of neighbor organs such as heart, stomach, kidney, and spleen. In this paper, we propose an automatic segmentation of the liver using multi-planar anatomy and deformable surface model in portal phase of abdominal contrast-enhanced CT images. Method Our method is composed of four main steps. First, the optimal liver volume is extracted by positional information of pelvis and rib and by separating lungs and heart from CT images. Second, anisotropic diffusing filtering and adaptive thresholding are used to segment the initial liver volume. Third, morphological opening and connected component labeling are applied to multiple planes for removing neighbor organs. Finally, deformable surface model and probability summation map are performed to refine a posterior liver surface and missing left robe in previous step. Results All experimental datasets were acquired on ten living donors using a SIEMENS CT system. Each image had a matrix size of $512{\times}512$ pixels with in-plane resolutions ranging from 0.54 to 0.70 mm. The slice spacing was 2.0 mm and the number of images per scan ranged from 136 to 229. For accuracy evaluation, the average symmetric surface distance (ASD) and the volume overlap error (VE) between automatic segmentation and manual segmentation by two radiologists are calculated. The ASD was $0.26{\pm}0.12mm$ for manual1 versus automatic and $0.24{\pm}0.09mm$ for manual2 versus automatic while that of inter-radiologists was $0.23{\pm}0.05mm$. The VE was $0.86{\pm}0.45%$ for manual1 versus automatic and $0.73{\pm}0.33%$ for manaual2 versus automatic while that of inter-radiologist was $0.76{\pm}0.21%$. Conclusion Our method can be used for the liver volumetry for the pre-surgery planning of living donor liver transplantation.

  • This study was aimed to characterize osteogenic potential of rat bone marrow stromal cells (BMSC) isolated with standard flushing method and investigate the plasticity of transdifferentiation between osteoblastic and adipocytic lineage of cultured BMSC. Unlike aspiration method in human, rat bone marrow was extracted by means of irrigation with culture media that elevates the possibility of co-extraction of committed osteoprogenitor, or preosteoblast or other progenitor cells of several types present inside bone marrow. The cultured stromal cells showed high ALP activity which is representative marker of osteoblast without any treatment. Osteogenic inducers such as Dex and BMP-2 were examined for the evaluation of their effect on osteogenic and adipocytic differentiation of stromal cells, because they function as osteoinductive agent in stromal cells, but simultaneously induce adipogenic differentiation. Osteogenic differentiation was evaluated by measuring alkaline phosphatase activity or mRNA expression of osteoblast markers such as osteopontin, bone sialoprotein, collagen type I and CbfaI, and in vitro matrix mineralization by von Kossa staining. Oil red staining method was used to detect adipocyte and adipocytic marker, aP2 and $PPAR{\gamma}2$ expression was examined using RT-PCR. It can be supposed that irrigation procedure resulted in high portion of already differentiation-committed osteoprogenitor cell showing elevated ALP activity and strong mineralization only under the supplement of $100{\mu}M$ ascorbic 2-phosphate and 10mM ${\beta}$-glycerophosphate without any treatment of osteogenic inducers such as Dex and BMP-2. Dex and BMP-2 seemed to transdifferentiate osteoprogenitor cells having high ALP activity into adipocytes temporarily, but continuous treatment redifferentiated into osteoblast and developed in vitro matrix mineralization. This property must be considered either in tissue engineering for bone regeneration, or in research of characterization of osteogenic differentiation, with rat BMSC isolated by the standard irrigation method.
